Elvin made the decision to not sing lead vocals on this song because he felt his gravelly voice would not do it justice. Mickey Thomas, a background singer in his band at the time, rode the success of this single all the way to a membership in Jefferson Starship (which featured Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane). Elvin, though he released numerous albums, never had another hit. Good news, though... Elvin is 79 and still going. P.S. Everyone tune in on Female Friday this week when J&A post their 700th video!

Elvin Bishop is such a dichotomy. Born in Southern California but raised on a pig farm in Iowa and in Oklahoma, he was a National Merit Scholar majoring in physics at the University of Chcago when he started playing guitar. He learned to play from old time black bluesmen like Howlin' Wolf but his style was a fusion of Blues, Funk, and Country and mostly party music.

I love how both of you really get into all parts of songs you’ve reacted to. When I was still living home I had the music loud enough for the neighborhood to enjoy. My mom came up and asked why so loud. I told her so I could hear ALL the music. You two seem to do the same, you hear ALL the music. A couple of days later I was in my room listening to The Doors. I looked up and she was just standing there listening. The song ended, she asked who I was listening to. I told her and she said she really liked it. Yes my mom was the greatest. Not just because of that.

Great reaction to a Tulsa great! From Tulsa myself is where Elvin grew up from elementary school through high school at Rogers! He said that “growing up in Oklahoma gives you a soulful background for whatever you want to do”! Started listening to him in 1973 first year in college and bought his Let it Flow album! You need to hear long version of “Traveling Shoes” which has a great lengthy guitar solo!

As a fellow Okie, I want you to know that Elvin was raised on the other end of the Turner Turnpike from you in Tulsa.
His parents owned a house a few blocks from where I was raised.
Oklahoma produces a TON of talent!
    A little background:
"Born in Glendale, California on 10 / 21 / 1942. Elvin Bishop's name is synonymous with the blues.
The Tulsa native, who is famous for his 1970s hit “Fooled Around and Fell in Love,” attributes part of his success to his time spent in the Sooner State. “Growing up in Oklahoma gives you a soulful background for whatever you want to do,” he said."

Amber, you DEFINITELY caught the vibe on that guitar solo. From the start, you feel how he's playfully "toying", then at the end, he's crying. I also love how Jordan vibed the whole time. For us lifelong bachelors, this song resonates. I knew in high school, I was NEVER getting married. I'm 58 now and realize that I've LOVED them all---and still do...

If you like that funky southern rock blues, then Elvin is your guy! He's one of the top blues guitarists in the country, coming out of the Chicago blues era in the 60s, playing with the Butterfield Blues band. Try 'Travelin' Shoes,' to get a good dose of his great blues guitar style, and slide guitar work. Also 'Fishin', and 'Stealin' Watermelons'. Plus 'Everybody's in the Same Boat', (more recent song). I see a lot of reactions to 'Fooled around and fell in love'. Which doesn't even sound like an Elvin Bishop song, to me.

  • @mrbag60

On this song Mickey Thomas (who later would join Jefferson Starship/Starship) was lead singer on this track. Elvin Bishop was originally the 2nd guitarist in the Paul Butterfield Blues Band from 1965-1968 along with Mike 'Master of the Telecaster' Bloomfield (1943-1981) on lead. Check out the 13-minute jam East-West from the album of the same title and it will blow your mind as Elvin and Michael are trading some serious riffs.

He has been a talent since 1966 when he played for the Paul Butterfield Blues Band (check them out if you like classic blues and one the best white blues band in America ever). He is part of the foundation of blues/rock guitar in America since the 60's. Was never flashy or craved the limelight, but true blues guitarist adore him.

Kudos to Amber for pickin up on that Nightclub piano style. Gotta drop another request for "Jane" by Starship, since its the same singer (A real banger with a killer piano chop custom made for J). I remember the first time I heard this, walkin through a cafeteria with this just startin on the jukebox. Before I reached the other side I was dead in my tracks with tears in my eyes. In contrast, 'Jane' had me stompin cracks in the floor tiles in time to that invincible beat.
