Born in Southern California but raised on a pig farm in Iowa and in Oklahoma, he was a National Merit Scholar majoring in physics at the University of Chcago when he started playing guitar. He learned to play from old time black bluesmen like Howlin' Wolf but his style was a fusion of Blues, Funk, and Country and mostly party music.

I love how both of you really get into all parts of songs you’ve reacted to. When I was still living home I had the music loud enough for the neighborhood to enjoy. My mom came up and asked why so loud. I told her so I could hear ALL the music. You two seem to do the same, you hear ALL the music. A couple of days later I was in my room listening to The Doors. I looked up and she was just standing there listening. The song ended, she asked who I was listening to. I told her and she said she really liked it. Yes my mom was the greatest. I had the honor of seeing Elvin Bishop live at the Fillmore East in NYC, same night with Johnny Winter and the Allman Brothers, a night I will never forget, when we left the Fillmore it was light out the next morning.
