Harley-Davidson used the Dynas as the test bed for the 6 speed transmission because at that time the Dyna lineup was the best-selling one they had. I worked at a Harley dealership in 2008 and asked the same question, and that's the answer I got.
I've got the 05 version with the fxdx suspension. It's a really capable all around bike. I've taken trips on it and I've also hit the Canyons with it. Not the greatest bike for either, but it does both very capably. like you said, for the price range, it's a great entry into Harley world, although I don't consider myself an entry-level Rider. always enjoy the vids, thanks keep them coming. also love the words of wisdom.
I know your post is 3 yrs old. Question on the shocks/suspension. I'm looking at the dyna line because of the mid controls. I have a vstar 1100 and the pegs are way too far forward for my short legs and there's no option for mid controls. BUT the roads I ride on are pretty rough. How's the suspension travel on rougher roads? I used to have a nightster and it'd bottom out the suspension.
@@muskokamike127 mid control dyna is great for seating position. You will need to upgrade from stock shocks and preferably fork springs to get the ridge you want. The dyna is above the nightster in not bottoming out though. That part you get almost for free. Love the nightster but almost zero suspension

Ill have to say, for a bike with 22 thousand miles on it, it sure looks well taken care of. Can Harley just buckle down and make a 530lb bike? The frame technology is out there and it may actually justify the $20k price tag. Just wanted to add, is the m8 really worth getting into debt or is an older Harley like this feel just as good?
Gotta be careful with those 2006 dyna 6 speeds. There were issues with the first year of the six speed, I think with the inner primary bearing. That LR looks very clean!
HD put the six speed tranny into the Dyna first in order to test it in real world conditions. They didn’t want to put it in their top of the line machines and have problems show up tarnishing the image of their touring models. GM used to do the same thing. New technology would be tried out in Oldsmobile before being added to Cadillac.
My guess why they would first put the 6 speed in the dyna versus a softail is because of price. If a company is gonna test out something new, wouldn’t it make sense to test it out on the cheaper models??
I've heard people say the same thing about dynas that they do about sportsters. Calling them a girls bike. I had an o5 xxlc with a 21 inch front tire raked to accommodate. A 4.5 gallon tank. I didn't do any engine mods other than exhaust and to pit a K&N air filter. Was able to get it up to 119 mph.
I find the vibration of a Harley engine loosens up my joints and vertebra. Makes me feel like I'm part of the bike. I also have backed issues with the T11 and T112 that is inoperable.
