    Long Exposure Photography is a big part of my work. Do you take long exposures or are you new to this?

    Hey! Nice video and work!
    If i was to use a welding glass as my ND filter, how many stops does it correspond?

    I have taken long exposures once in a while, but more so when I was curious and learning photography. In current times, taking landscapes I've found little purpose for it, shooting medium format film. This is an excellent technical presentation, although you might clarify that each type of film will have its own unique reciprocity curve or exposure extension - meaning one extension table will not fit all.

    • @aows
      @aows  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, that's true, that table is for HP5 and FP4. Fuji Acros for example doesn't suffer of reciprocity failure for exposures under 15 minutes.
      If you want to capture the landscapes as they are and you have plenty of light, then long exposure is not a technique you might need to use :) I use it mostly with water or clouds.

    Nice episode as always! I am using the app reciprocity timer for long exposures. It’s very handy and provides the compensation times for current films

    Wish you a happy New Year. And thank your for the explanation with the ND-Filter-system. My CZJ-mediumformat-lenses for my Pentacon Six setup are so insanely huge (90mm), but this could work.

    • @aows
      @aows  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, and happy new year to you too! 90mm filter thread? That's big 😱 well if you shoot B&W and are not too worried about sharpness, you could try some welding glass.

    Really appreciate this informative video as I’ve really liked some of your long exposures in the past. Thanks for the recourses too, I’m sure they’ll come in handy. I’m looking forwards to the next video, I hope you show us something to do with shots of water as I think you’ve made some great long exposures including water.

      Glad you liked it! For sure, I'll be showing some examples with water, those are the situations in which I like to use long exposures the most :)

      Nice, now that's a real *long* exposure haha. I've never tried that, I might give it a try in the future. Would love to see that one once you take it down :)

  • @basschurink

    Thank for sharing this. As I shoot most of the time hp5 it is nice to have the reciprocity failure details of it. I’ve used it only now for the Portra film which was also expired. It came out above expectations. Shall try it with hp5 soon. Did you combine the nd filter already with a nd gradiant as well?

    • @basschurink
      @basschurink 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And offcourse have a very nice christmas!

    • @aows
      @aows  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Expired film might get a bit trickier, but I guess that a bit of overexposing would do the trick. I'd love to see what you get when you do have the chance to shoot with HP5 :) I've combined the ND with an orange filter, I don't think I've tried grad + ND just yet.

    Have you tried the Reciprocity Timer app? I got back into film about a year ago and find this app to be extremely accurate. It covers a wide range of film stocks, and also has compensation factors for various types of filters (ND, polarizer), as well as colored filters for B/W photography. I'd recommend giving it a look.

    • @aows
      @aows  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will, thanks! Although the table I use seems to be working just fine for me, I will check if the app gives similar times :)

    you mentioned an alternative to buying expensive filters. Something about a type of glass at a hardware store. Could you or anyone here help me out? I'm so sorry, I couldn't for the life of me understand that word you said.

      Hi! Yes, you can use welding glass. Quality won't be the same, but close enough.

    Your long exposure shots are gorgeous that's true. Also, i think it fits your personal vision of photography that you talked about in the black and white vs color video. But i have a question, i looked for reciprocity failure chart just now and it says hp5 equation is (shutter-speed with reciprocity correction) = (light meter reading) exp 1.31. when i do the math, (60 sec) exp 1.31 gives about 4 min. how do you get 7 minute of exposure ? just wondering, maybe my math isnt right haha

    • @aows
      @aows  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the kind words! About the question, I find that 7 minutes give me a better exposure than 4. I've used the formula they give you before and some were a bit underexposed. But keep in mind that in the end, 4 to 7 minutes is less than one stop, so the difference won't be big :)

      Thanks! What photo? The one I took with the Bronica? Unfortunately I couldn't develop the film at the time, and I didn't want to wait a few weeks to post the video for that image. It was just a test and it's not very good haha.
