Sony keeps quality not only in the camera, but also other components
. I am still using 6 years old z3 . Never replaced even battery. Still Runs a day. But most people like photos with make- up at free of cost...pink face, blue sky, etc. Sony is realistic. Recommended for smart users. Quality does matter.,😻

Xperia night me be a good choices for professional photographers, but not a choice for general users in my pov software is not well tuned for auto mode. But in pro mode it was a beast no doubts on that, overall decent.

I wonder which professional uses a phone as their professional tool. Event photographers? Fashion photographers? Landscape photographers? Real-estate photographers? People talk of pro features on a phone like professionals use them but fail to understand that the pro mode on the Xperia iii is not so different from the pro mode in any flagship available today. Just because it has a 'pro' mode doesn't make it a 'professional' tool.

I give props to Sony. The day time photos in Sony is very pleasing and true to life. What's even better is the sharpness to my eyes are very DSLR like and not over or under sharpened, which is rare in smartphone. Details can even match with Xiaomi even if not too detailed. But standard image with no cropping looks surprisingly equal. Well balanced. At night it's even on par with Mi 11 Ultra, minus some highlight clippings and less detailed images. What I like about Sony is what I am looking for in a smartphone, true to life and not oversaturated. That is to me is definitely a win. If I'd choose a smartphone, Sony is my go to since the overall package in not just camera but audio, screen and size is complete. I'd choose Xiaomi for the fun of course. It's mode is exceptional. But Sony finally outdid themselves this year. The Xperia 1 iii is definitely worth the buy now.

For all the bells and whistles of the Mi 11, I'd actually expect more from the phone. I wouldn't say it was "waayy" better at all. It is better but none of the cropped or zoomed shots I would use anyway. I'd always prefer as close to optical Tele as possible as I think both were bad when it came to digital zoom.
In portrait mode the Mi11 is a clear winner with SONY lagging clearly behind. They need to invest more in their HDR r&d. Apart from that, I'd actually consider the 1iii the better device overall.
It's more slender, has a no hole display, has a jack (something I use a lot of) and a clean design which is a top priority for me.
Overall, the Mi11 has better basic camera systems but only marginally. I do wish you went into Photo Pro mode because the manual experience I'm sure would flip everything on its head, especially in video where the 1iii records 4k@120p in HDR.
I think there was a lot left to test. There's a significant amount that hasn't been tested but is core to the 1iii. The people that would buy the 1iii are people who care a lot about the manual experience.
You should cover the manual experience next between the two

Used a Mi 11 Ultra Global here. While it is still very good in image and video quality, I sold it and got myself a refurbished S10e Snapdragon because there are few things bothered me:
    1) This phone has the Snapdragon 888 and it heats up really crazy and fast. MIUI doesn't help either. S10e with the OneUI 3.0 had zero heating issues at all. 855 is one of the best chip in thermal. The only time i had s10e warm (a little warm) is during the setup and that is with android update AND app downloading at the same time in a fiberoptic WIFI environment.
    2) When taking close shots, 90% of the time it is blurred. This is fatal for me as i love to take photos of my various watches. I had to resort to MACRO or ultra wide mode to get a close shot. S10e might lacking in details and camera tech, but it does the macro shot or close up shots really good (like 100% clear with details). Normal shots? Definitely mi 11 ultra wins. But it blurs even when i taking normal range food photos and plain unusable in close shots due to large sensors means it is really bad for me.
    3) It is really huge and heavy. I love the premium ceramic feel, the charge speed, huge display but it is too chunky. My hands and fingers actually felt sore after longer period of use. 250-280gram with a case is simply too much. S10e on the other hands, weights only 150gram and the size is very good in one handed use. This is when i realise, i might be a compact phone user.
    4) While the display is great, it consumes lots of battery in WQHD and 120hz. Too consuming. My SOT is practically 5-6 hours only. S10e Snapdragon gave me almost 7-9 hours SOT (7 being outdoor with LTE, 9 hours being 100% indoor with WIFI) with just 3100 battery. MIUI might be the culprit as well.
    5) Curved display indeed feels good, looks good, but it is very bad in handling impacts or even installing a screen protector film. Tempered glass is impossible at all. Not to mention all case doesn't cover the side curves at all. S10e display is flat and yep, cheap tempered glass can be installed. Already had a dent on my mi 11 ultra display at the corner only about a month of use.
    6) The fact it lacks headphone jack and SD card support is also annoying as well, i knew when i getting this, but when it comes to real life usage, i really miss those basic features.
Things i love? Display is awesome, sound is excellent, charge speed is insanely fast (10-100% in just 35 min = 67w), and ceramic case back.
In short, the major deal breakers for me are the bad close range image quality, super heavy weight and size, curved display and finally, MIUI. My bad, but now i realize my needs. Lesson learnt.

      @АлексейМорозов-я9н1м 3 ปีที่แล้ว

This phone mostly for people who need a best camera. About minimal distance for photo - yes, it's longer than other smartphones due big sensor. But you can increase the distance a little and then crop the photo - the quality will be better than S10. Also you can switch off 120Hz - it gives about 1 extra hour (by the way - the camera app always use 60Hz). SD card and 3.5 jack - it's our past unfortunately. It's hard to find a good smartphone with these features and in 1-2 years it will be impossible at all. So It's better to prepare for it )) ps: there are tempered glasses for this phone. I also hate curved screens modern trend but when I started use It - It wasn't very annoying.

There is another test I don't usually see. That is, quality of pictures for fast moving objects.

I have a query about photo quality in resolution 12 mp of xperia vs 12mp of mi 11 ultra both perform almost the same amount of detail when cropping but what about resolution 50 mp of mi 12 ultra vs 12 mp of xperia there is much different when cropping ? . Something that very few reviewers fail to mention is how the battery holding up when using the camera app. From what I've heard the Mi 11 Ultra drains its 5000mAh battery like a beast when using the camera. To me, as somebody who uses the camera often that is also very important. Blank statements such as "The Xiaomi is the better phone and clearly takes the better photos" seem very biased and not professional. Sony takes photos that are more true to life, has less aggressive post-processing, exhibits far fewer overexposure issues, has expandable memory and a headphone jack that can be used for an external mic. Also, where is the info on RAW support, focus abilities, shutter lag and so many important details about the camera performance?

  • @anecro

The Xperia wins in most cases just because it's hellbent in having tiny amounts of sharpening and contrast / dynamic range tampering compared to a regular flagship like the mi 11 ultra, but I have to say the pixel-peeping pixelation issue is VERY apparent here. Like you said it is true that Xperias suffer from this, it's the one issue the cameras have that other competitors have long figured out and this is coming from a big fan of Sony's phones.
Make no mistake, all the mi 11 ultra is doing is applying more aggressive sharpening and contrast curves that ultimately create bigger halos and artifacts that are very visible in the comparisons and make objects and shapes much bulkier and thicker (which results to that notorious "phone video / photo quality" people refer to), but the pixelation on the Xperia is messing with fine details the likes of narrow repeated patterns. The Xiaomi performs exceptionally well when it comes to microclarity like that and next to a device like the 1 III it looks a lot smoother zoomed in all the way.
There are a ton of other benefits to the 11 ultra's camera system though, including natural bokeh which is a MASSIVE plus not many people seem to care about, it's so rare to find in smartphones, let alone ones that handle overall quality this well. Not even the 12s Ultra with its crazy sensor is able to compete in many areas, including dynamic range and between-camera stability and faithfulness.
Overall, personally, I'm having a hard time finding a winner. The mi 11 ultra has shook my perception of the 1/5 III. I still can't fully like it because it gives a conventional smartphone camera look, meaning it's not concerned with color accuracy or any accuracy really, just pushing for a good realism / social media saturated-type balance, while the Xperia, traditionally, delivers very accurate and natural-looking images with minimal post processing, even if you may miss with its dynamic range while also having to deal with the pixelation microproblem.
If the Xperia had the hardware of the 11 ultra it would destroy competition I say. Kind of ironic considering Sony would be the ones to stick to hardware, like the purists they are, but now we're stuck in this weird situation where Sony has the most advanced software even if they're missing a few things (though missing a night mode is a huge minus) and the more accurate and lightweight processing that would go so well with even better hardware than it already has.
Edit: The mi 11 ultra's sensor isn't a true 48mp. Anything above 16 megapixels on smartphones is a pixel-binned result that ultimately does nothing in terms of quality unless you present the best possible conditions to the phone.

Subscribed. Xiaomi Mi11 Ultra has the advantage of the bigger sensor, but also the phone looks larger and probaly not so confartable to use compared with Xperia 1 III, that has also tha manual photography and video controls, and having the option to record up to 120 fps in 4k you can obtain artistic videos, or good for planetary astrophotography videos

well after having a lot of android and iOS phones I really missed nokia with their carl Zeiss lenses then Huawei came to proof that Leica was doin great, I had iPhone 11pro Huawei P40 Pro and Galaxy S20+ and the best of those was the Huawei with great saturation when you wanted and good color when disabling special features, then I bought the Xperia 1 II and booooy is a whole world difference the color accuracy is exactly of what you seeing the scene interpretation is the best I've ever seen in a while and once you get used to the software you can choose to take really crisp pics, this Sony phones are for those who really love photography definitely not made for the teenager who wants to take a snap on the food and upload it right away, you got to love photo to get pics with Sony phones

The xiomi's larger 48mp camera lense helps it get more detailed shots during the day, but big up to the sony for almost keeping up with its smaller 12mp camera lense. Sonys pictures had better dynamic range and colour reproductions but xiomi's handled the shadows better.
When it comes to night footage both do a great job with less noise and more details, but i'd give it to sony for more accurate color reproduction!

Same way a7SIII kills in high ISO. The larger sensor pixels are better in light sensitivity. Those manufacturers chasing large MP phone camera is just ridiculous when Full Frame cameras maintain at mostly 24MP. Ended up combining the pixels to output 12MP at the expense of extra processing and less light sensitivity. Also reason why Sony can achieve 20fps with minimal processing

I can understand why the Chinese phone wins in zoom or cropped pictures like you said it has more megapixels. But in day time shots I saw it was neck and neck with both having strong points but the colour accurate rendition of the Sony wins it for me. At night it's the same neck and neck, some pictures u uploaded looked better on the Mi phone better exposed and on some other pictures better on the Sony especially when using the main sensor or camera. Front facing that goes to the Chinese phone too. But there's something you don't do which is to test the focusing and picture quality of moving subjects which is a very key experience. People have pets, people see several things daily on the street or when watching live sport they would like to capture. I believe the Sony would crush this Chinese phone in this scenario. You should do comparisons adding this option in your future camera comparisons. It's a very key segment of photography

For Photos, I have to give the point to Xiaomo. Great exposure, great dynamic range, great detail. But I think Sony Xperia does not worse in video. I has better shadow detail which I like. It has also nice professional video modes, like the Sony Venice color profile that only Sony cinema cameras also have. I think Sony is the better choice for people who prefer to take control themselves, while the Xiaomi is perfect for point and shoot. In the end, I would take the Xiaomi though. I think its better hardware will still be great in two years, while Sony is using rather mediocre hardware for its cameras (e.g. much smaller sensor).

Nice comparison, & i agree with all your comments. Mi 11 ultra did better, but the thing that upset me the most is too see that Sony re-used the same flawd front camera that everyone was complaining about from the xperia 1 & xperia 1 ii. That's really a slap in xperia users faces. You'd think after xperia users had to suffer that faulty front camera on the previous 2 flagships Sony would fix that problem on the 3rd release, it's ridiculous.

    • @AndrewSmith-yy4sd

I'm a xperia user, but for that reason alone I'm gona stay away from the 1 iii, there's no way I'm gona pay $1400 for a phone that re-used the same weak, flawd front camera for the 3rd time on thier flagship regardless of all the complaints by users. For $1400 everything should be perfect or near perfect. I like all the rest of the upgrades to the phone overall, but re-using that same weak front camera a 3rd time & charging $1400 is just a heavy push towards another brand for this year.

    4k video
Stabilization on both phones are comparable you can't really notice the difference, also in color mi 11 ultra and sony xperia 1 iii literally looks identical you might say they shot on the same phone 😂 I also noticed on mi 11 ultra's 4k video it has a violet tint. Dynamic range is not really noticeable but when watch it again and again mi 11 ultra's is ahead. In exposure and details are also comparable.😁

They all apply noise reduction even for daylight scenes and sharpening after that. Looks artificial. But shooting in raw and processing in Adobe Lightroom makes a huge difference. I have mi 11 ultra and shoot only in raw for photo and mcpro24fps for video. Try it and you will see what this cameras are really capable of. Xiaomi seems to use primary colours, especially red, in a more dynamic way. Since life colours are mostly a mix of these the photo are more dynamic during day light hours. At night they have controlled any unnatural light - such as street lamps without diminishing the vibrancy of the colours. Therefore their algorithm is far better than Sony's currently, however, Sony will no doubt update and correct any deficit in the algorithm they use, but they cannot correct the sensors - so Xiaomi wins and is future proof against this current Sony phone. I was very impressed with the definition on the Xiaomi on the final night time walk! One may wish the Xiaomi was the same shape and size of the Sony - which for me is the perfect size! However Sony need to do more camera - wise on their flagship phones! They make cameras ans sensors for so many other companies phones. I am sure they can.

Sony sensors are limited because of the resolution but it has a lot to offer and it seems that is more oriented on the main 12 megapixel sensor.Xiaomi M11 Ultra is a monster with lots of things to offer but the biggest difference is that the Xiaomi is a settled device where Sony just started the race.I believe that in the near future it will be much better than today and and it will imporve on the already good camera.I don't think that Sony can compete in the Zoom or utra wide game but I believe that the main sensor of Sony it will be in top 3 at the end of the day.

Mi 11 Ultra won this comparison. The price of Xperia 1 iii is really too much and I think Sony sales are just going to get worse. Just what I think though. We will know in a few months time. Thanks for the awesome review Han 😊
