Crunchyroll Disables Comments Permanently to Censor Community and They Replaced Translators with AI

- Crunchyroll has gotten themselves into quite the mess today with disabling their entire sites comment section to censor the community. Then they replaced translators with AI for their newest anime like My Deer Friend Nokotan. This has been an ongoing story in the anime community for years now and Asmongold made more people aware of it.
Love you all so much thank you for all the support!

Ah yes the age old excuse for censorship being "it's for the community's safety". Classic.
Oh def you know, one of the comments could hit ya in the face. Dangerous stuff smh
😞 comment gave me warnings for the show so i can prepare like sound, content warning, flashing etc without spoiling show. Community was oddly good for that plus letting people know more after credits/ending song
To me it sounds like someone who owns the property that Crunchyroll streams wanted this and who Crunchyroll tasked with it saw the easy solution of comment out the line that is the class to allow a comment section. It will get rid of all the comment sections for all of them but it is the quickest and easiest way to do it for the one the IP holder wants it done one.
Now how to do it for only the episodes or only the series the IP holder wants it done on is more complicated and requires writing new code to check if the video being played is the video file that the IP holder wants to not have a comment section.
In short a programmer took the quick way instead of the correct way and now Cruncyroll doesn't have a comment section which it seems was seen by PR saw as a good thing as no comment section means they cannot write something to say bad things about Crunchyroll and Legal saw it as a good thing as no comment section means people cannot write something onto their site that Cruncyroll can get sued over.
It's partially true in this case though. They didn't want to pay moderators, and the comments sections of pretty much EVERY anime distribution site, legal or not, has been full of "this show is trash" bait and, more concerningly, blatant racism for years now. However, they're also removing reviews which is just bs
Whenever I hear a company say "it's for YOUR safety" immediate red flag. It's not for us, it's always for them. They could care less about us. This is for their bottom line. Safety is just a nice way of saying "we're going to silence your voices without actually saying it".
I already cancelled my Crunchy sub. Should have cancelled it long ago.
Crunchyroll: "We censor for your sake!"
Crunchyroll, a year later: "Why is piracy going up?!"
Also Crunchyroll: "We are saying that for your safety, but in reality we are just removing features with a valid excuse to make you not pay attention that: 1) every so then you have less rights as customer, 2) service gets more pricier and 3) you get less benefits." Regardless of wether you care about comments or not, WAKE THE FUK UP PEOPLE!!!! WE ARE LOSING FEATURES UNDER OUR NOSES!!!!!
Funny part is they started as piracy and then over time became this
They started as a pirate site
CR: "Protecting the community by disabling comments."
Lol without anyone communicating there is NO community. Funny how that works.
Protecting the Woke community" is what they meant... ;) 9anime/Aniwave is doing the same damn thing too. Threatening to IP ban their fans if they say anything bad about anime that's lgbtq+ related etc. Just be careful out there. Allot of people aren't happy right now. :(

This is genuinely the worst decision they have ever made
Nah, the easily worst decision they made is by censoring anime and manga to begin with. If people didn't touch streaming services, this pickle wouldn't exist. 😏
I'm honestly glad that I am a pirate at this point as most use third party commenting services to know an episode, but now I am not even touching the ENG versions because I do not want to see machines have any input on any work.
And they made High Gaurdian Spice 😂
It would be one thing to freeze all comment sections, but deleting them is down right cruel.
Nah, they can always make it worse😂😂😂
Second worst. They started loading ads for paying subscribers who wanted to watch videos without ads. In effect you were paying for a service they refused to deliver. Quit well before that happened.
You can't be toxic if you can't speak.

wtf? The comments on episodes held so much important information on source material, context, and skipped content! Some of that was near-essential for understanding the episodes/shows fully. This is a huge, huge mistake; taking out the sense of community and discussion is an enormous loss.
Yeah, sometimes I would decide if watching omake’s or anything after the anime ending song played was worth it by reading comments.
@@Apotheosis0 totally agree
sometimes if i wasnt sure about starting an anime, id look over reviews to choose if i should or shouldnt. its easy to ignore the ghoulish/clearly out of context ones
Often CR wouldn't have a synopsis right away or sometimes ever and comments would fill that gap. Last week I was talking to my son and I said that I wished they would have a moderated forum where people could feel like a community instead of just paying for a service.
Or just, you know, diving into the comment section to join the discourse/soak up the zeitgeist. Maybe you couldn't quiet figure out something about a character's motives. Maybe you missed a huge detail. Maybe someone has a cool theory about how the story is going. Or maybe you just want to see how the community felt about a controversial event in the episode... or maybe you realize you are are the only one that thought it was bullshit and everyone else loved it.
Regardless, diving into the comments section was something I did after EVERY episode to soak in/process what I just watched. Even when binging a completed series I always dip my toes in to see what everyone else thought.
Stripping that away just makes watching feel... empty.
Disabling Crunchyroll comments is such a braindead decision. There was a lot of fun discourse in the first episode of the second season of Tower of God, all memes about Rachel.

Most pirate sites have Disqus comment boards so there’s still community engagement there. In fact, those sites have better comment sections than CR had anyways.

KissAnime was killed off a while ago and a lot of clone sites popped up over the years, but they are riddled with trojans and malware and the clone sites' library of anime is no where as robust as the old KissAnime website had. The original KissAnime had a vast library of anime dating back to early 1980s of even old and lost anime that can't be found easily anymore in 2024. It's quite sad really. In the past 4 years since 2020, the internet has just crumbled even more.
This is so DUMB! I’m currently watching one piece (600 episodes behind) and the goats in the comments section always gave the timestamps for when the recap was over. This company can’t even provide a skip recap option consistently and now the best source for us is gone. Nice one.
I actually think the subbing mistakes come from them trying to always rush episodes for a lot of shows out at the last minute. I don't care if a human or ai writes the subs, but please sync them properly... As for recap skips, well, they're only ever on the newest series of the latest season. If they get Robotech: The Macross Saga in their library for example for the season it won't ever have a skip function but the latest shonen/Isekai might. That's what I'm always seeing.

hidive feels souless
@@ysfsim and now so does crunchyroll
Also, they removed written reviews from the site. This is so stupid. Since, supposedly, the hate mob for this show was the problem, why didn’t they just implement it for just this show. I love that they say their goal is to “protect the community”, but with no way to intersect with each other, there is no community
They take anything that can make them look bad.
and it wont make a difference, since they basically have a monopoly on the anime industry in the west
@@stormierkinji8021This is why piracy is at an all time high for the entertainment industry in general.
Remember the days when we could ONLY find good subs thanks to Fan Sub's? Groups of fans got together to try to perfectly translate anime subs? We have had so many people take to the internet sea once more and raising the black flag after our ports of harbor were taken over by Corporate Incompetence. Back when Dub's were looked on as corpses floating in the sea! We built these Ports to stave off the Corporation's, but the temptation of gold has lead us astray my brothers! Once more, Corporate Incompetence has wormed its way into the things we hold dear! Will we sit back this time because we feel to old to live on the seas once more?
I say Nay!
We may have lost our Ports once more but we can build them once more! Raise the Colors and set the sails!
Har har har!
bro wtf this came out of nowhere. comments removal is crazy
Wait, I don’t think I’ve ever seen toxic comments on CR. This is kind of frustrating. I loved reading the comments after each episode I watched.
That's because you've probably just watched the average shonen animes. But BL is a niche genre (mostly for girls) that has existed since forever and tourists now think it's an "agenda". That's why they are leaving hateful comments
@@fleurdeschamps2700 why not just moderate the comments section. It seems so silly to nuke the entire feature.
@@fleurdeschamps2700I think you meant to put quotes on the word “hateful”
I don’t think it’s just this anime, I’ve noticed a major increase in mistakes regarding subs over all. Either they already started using Ai or they purposely increased the mistakes to get people more open minded to the concept……
Yup, cancelled my membership until comments are back. It's actually been my only subscription service the last few years. Guess I am done paying for less features. I know I can watch else where for free. I love reading the comments and reviews. Part of the whole experience.
Go cry about it
@gamerbeast3616 That's exactly what I'm doing here. Why you gotta be a jerk though? Got any actual feedback about the situation?
@@gamerbeast3616 go slip in the shower :)
@@gamerbeast3616 people like you are the reason that big companies remove features in the name of X excuse and we end up owning nothing, paying more for less, losing our ability to file lawsuits to companies (like Roku). Also people that shame others for Going team apple or android and saying thats their fault for suffering X issue from there are also the worst. Dont belittle problems, they all start small and spread like a plague.
Crunchyroll is making TH-cam look like the most consumer friendly website
How does it get worse than their removal of the ad-free viewing in 2022?
What do you mean by that? I don't get ads?
@@Allyfyn yeah because we all have to pay premium otherwise the service is useless, u only get the first season of an old anime or first 3 episodes "with a sampler"
@@Allyfyn I pay premium but I pay through a cheaper currency so it avoids me having to use 🏴☠️
@@MUFCTom you said they removed ad-free viewing, but they didn't.
@@Allyfyn they basically have. Let’s be fair, u get 3 episodes free of new anime and that’s it…?
What’s even worse is that the reviews are gone too so you can’t look at them before watching something, I know they still have the overall star rating but I like reading what people think about it to try and see if I think I’ll like it
Thx chibi for all the coverage you do, actually helps keep me updated with things.
Happy to help!
I second this
I’m going to be king of the pirates!
used to go to comments section for timestamps to skip some annoying recaps some episodes have in the beginning😭
Imagine being so terrified of criticism that you remove the ability for your audience to speak & run straight back to the dynamics of the TV era in the Internet Age.
I mean, I have no issue with AI translations for now, it's not perfect. But it's entirely an issue now, because Localisers didn't have armed Commissars standing over them to make sure they were translating properly, because apparently they are less capable of self control than children & 15 times more malicious.
I expect this from a corrupt politician to act and behave lmao. For real though. If you can't handle criticism then don't run a site in general. :/
The reason was all the toxic negativity being posted by rabid rightwingers. At some point having the forums being filled up by idiological BS gets tiring.
The comment section was actually very tame in Crunchyroll, I don't see why they would remove it.
Crazy that Crunchy roll functioned better as a piracy site in the late 2000s. Ive honestly never been back to that site when they started charging for anime.
That because the state of the anime industry in the us in the 90s and 2000s were so littered with censorship not just from 4kids.
Oh wow ....im not using crunchy roll anymore.
I'm surprised it took Sony this long after buying CR to turn off comments since they removed them on Funi like 4-5 years ago.
I think AI has a place in translation. Not so much as replacing but as a way for translators to speed up the process. Like they put the lines through AI, then a human looks over the AI's work and double checks it. There will be people who lose their jobs as in this case not as many translators are needed. But there would still be a human element.
Exactly, but it won’t fix the actual problem of the localizers screwing up everything.
AI translation is more or less inevitable because there is a need for it outside of the entertainment sphere. It may have flaws now, but with human correction, it’ll get to the point to where it’ll be just as good as a human translator.
Deleted my Crunchyroll Account about 5 years ago.
Why would anyone support this garbage company...
How do you watch anime now? I used to use fan sub sites a decade ago but it’s much more convenient for phones and tablets with apps. I’m just legit curious because I want to cancel subscription but a life comfort has dulled my pirate senses.
i was wondering why i couldn’t see comments on stuff on crunchy earlier today lmao
crunchyroll already has a bad reputation, now they do this? they're losing their own viewership.
And that's why you never use Crunchyroll.
Crunchy roll better not lose that comment section. It's like the comment section on the hub. You didn't know you needed it,until it was there. It's funny and full of ideas and protectives. I don't want to lose it
Its the same reason why I come to you tube. Sometimes the comments are more entertaining then the video.
ive never been offended by comments in crunchyroll, this is stupid, we anime watchers love reading comments after an episode to kind of connect and share thoughts with other people who watched the show.
It enhances the experience
Honestly, seeing how badly Translators have screwed up translations to force their own agenda, I don’t mind AI translations.
Every translator isn't doing that. Secondly, there are always alternatives for translations. Thirdly, they got punished didn't they if I remember correctly?
This is like nuking a country because someone did a bank heist
It's not the translators that are doing that shit tho. It's the localizers.
@@joshjo9405 but we can't just point to the localizers and scream how evil they are. Localization IS important. Everything about Pokemon has been localized. A good chunk of jokes in comedy anime would be utter nonsense to you without localizers. You are trying to replace an entire profession with ai slop simply because a few people did something you don't agree with.
th-cam.com/video/Pbpwf6P-sDM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=PzjElCcXOH9Gxsf3
For example this is straight up not what was said but you get the joke now, that's what localization is for. Would you seriously prefer "I have been watching these seven 750cc motorcycles which are noisy like horses, and are placed beautifully at an angle of 77°."? Cuz that's what you would have gotten if it was done by some ai
He who programs the AI will have just as much power. Not to mention the localizers are the main culprit.
This is unbelievable. I thought my app was glitching out because I didnt see the comment section. A really poor move. I really enjoyed discussing episodes in the comments with other fans. The one thing that made crunchyroll different from other streaming sites.
I loved reading the comment section on one piece while working my way through it, it really felt like I was sharing the journey. Over seven years worth of fun conversations gone just like that.
I was often visiting crunchyroll just for the comments. I'm not gonna subscribe for crunchyrole until they add back comments.
What I've seen with BL and GL is that they tended to keep to themselves for decades. They do, however, tend to invite a lot of tourists once they see mainstream success like with the recent Gundam show where people watched *just* for the yuri. At the end of the day, the two are and will remain to be niche by their very nature.
Pretty sure the "fan translation" that currently exists is also machine translated
That is so trash. Just stop paying for streaming services.
The only real thing I missed about my crunchyroll subscription was the comments for each video. It's a shame they are gone. I am all for AI generated subtitles. The localizers have been doing such a terrible job for so long it's sickening.
