I have read the paper that was followed and it says the reagent is for allylic and benzylic alcohols.

The paper you linked mentions refluxing In benzene for good yields of the aldehyde conversion. Do you think benzene could be replaced by toluene?

No doubt. But the b.p. is higher and you should hold the temperature at benzene b.p.
