@Leo - TheKing Calling someone a keyboard coward while you are doing the same. Where was Messi in 2010 WC? He can't perform for Argentina when they have players like Aguero and Dybala. Messi is the best right now but he is not the greatest of all time. Even Maradona was better than him. And Zidane too. France lost 2002 WC without Zidane and reached final twice with Zidane. And in 2006, he was against a Brazil team who had Ronaldo Ronaldinho and a few others and Zidane completely out played them.

I remember when Ronaldinho would make some moves and let the defender on the ground, but it was many times something that requires muscle explosion.
Zidane could fool a defender with slower movements, long movements. That, for me, was pure magic. Zidane could transform football into poetry. A genius. My favorite of those who I had opportunity to watch (since early 90's).

*2.* Singlehandedly, dragged France to their second World Cup final in 2006
*3.* Singlehandedly Won Euro in 2000
*4.* Scored Greatest goal of all Time. (and where.. in 2002 CL final)
*5.* He has own skill, named Zidane's Roullete (spin move)
*6.* Was MVP in every his tournament and championship
    *bonus:*
    *1.* He scored 3 goals (!) in 2 World Cup finals (!).
    *2.* Zidane's transfer record stood for 8 (!) years. (2001-2009). *in 2001 €75 million* (!).
*3.* In 2004 Zidane was named by UEFA as the best European footballer of all time and at this time, already was GOAT in football history. *and this all before his last famous 2006 World Cup.*
*For example:* this all is for what *overhyped by social media,* just one of the greatest forwards of all time like legendary Gerd Muller and without doubt best players of their generation Messi and Cristiano can only dream.

      1. He won the WC in '98, but that France team was by no means a one-man team. It was supremely talented in(almost) every position, and had one of the greatest defences of all-time.
      2. "Single-handedly" is over-doing it. But he was good in that tournament no doubt.
      3. Not really. Again, like in WC '98, that French team was fucking fearsome - in fact it was a better team than the '98 one because young French attackers had come through over the preceding two years and their forward line improved.
      4. Definitely not the greatest goal of all-time. Great goal, but there have been many, many better.
      5. That move existed _long_ before Zidane came along. I saw Michael Laudrup doing it years before anyone knew who Zidane was. It might be named after him, but not because he invented it.
      6. This is impressive, I admit. He just stood out on the pitch - your eyes were drawn to him every time he got the ball.
      bonus:
      1. That's impressive. But remember that Geoff Hurst scored 3 goals in a _single_ WC final. And Geoff Hurst wasn't even a particularly good player, never mind a great player.
      2. This is a pretty meaningless statistic. Bernabe Ferreyra was the world's most expensive player for seventeen years in the thirties and forties and no-one's ever heard of him.
      3. In 2004, he was named best _European_ footballer of all time... But since 2004 Cristiano Ronaldo has come along and shattered almost every record there is. Add to that all the non-European players who most neutrals would say were/are greater than Zidane: Messi, Maradona, Ronaldo-Nazario, perhaps even Pele.
I liked Zidane as a player - he was a genius, one of the greats. But he wasn't the greatest player of all-time, not in my opinion.

He won the World Cup and euro, but for its when he signed for Real Madrid and his first season scored the winning goal which is the best in history because it’s in the final and Zidane was the highest transfers player in that time. If anything stands out between him and Messi and Ronaldo was the World Cup 2006. Zidane came out of retirement for international football at the age 34 for that 2006 World Cup and the teams and players he knocked out was unbelievable. Spain, Brazil and Portugal. look at those teams with the players Zidane beat with France they were players of previous World Cup winners, champions league winners and ban dor winners. What Zlatan said is the explanation. I never could put words on it myself, but every time i saw Zidane play, it was like watching magic, what he did simply wasn't suppose to be possible, and it wasn't until Messi came along that we saw another player handle the ball the way Zidane could. I have had discussions with so many people about Zidane over the years, and it seems like those that are under 30 has a hard time acknowledging Zidane's magic, to them it's all about Ronaldo (the new one, they barely know who the first one is) and Messi. But i get it after Zlatan's quote. It is basically the same with keepers, where i think Oliver Kahn is the greatest of all time, but no one under 30 seem to understand why he was so great, and the reasons are very similar to that of Zidane.
What Zidane did, which is hard to explain and see in short video clips is his mantra on the field. He elevated all his teammates up a notch, combined with the fact that Zidane had such ball control that he could literally chose the pace and direction of the game. The reason he earned the nickname maestro, is because of his ability to take charge, and simply orchestrate the game as he saw fit.
And when you think about that, that he could actually do that, very very very few players in the history of football has possessed that ability. It's actually unheard of, here we have players making millions of dollars, and there are 11 of them on them on the opposing team, which all want to win, they all want to control the game, but they are denied because of one mans absolute share power to direct the game he sees fit. And i was telling everyone that i thought Zidane was the greatest ever, until Messi came along and, which in my mind, is better, but those two are alone on top in my opinion.
Zidane had the X-Factor, you had to experience it, be there and witness it, year by year. Those who did knows what I'm talking about. It is only when you see the whole picture that you really understand what a dominant force this man was. Kahn is also like this, yes he has some truly amazing saves, some totally ridiculous. But Kahn had something else up his sleeve, he had the ability to strike fear into the attackers, making them afraid of scoring.
Some players just has this one special hidden skill, that is almost like a godsend or a hack of you will. It elevates them to another level, and become legends.

Corrections: France only lost one penalty, which was from Trezeguet. In that 2006 final, Vieira was injured and substituted earlier, Henry had a cramp and was off in extra time. Not sure why Ribery was substituted, but at that time he was a young player and not yet a legend. It was not unreasonable for Wiltord to play. I think the worst thing was that three of the most important players, Vieira, Henry and Zidane weren't able to play through the entire game and take the penalties. Among them, Zidane is the oldest and played the longest. It was a really unfortunate that such a great team, which had won Spain, Brazil and Portugal wasn't able to lift the world cup trophy.

@@algerianjonsnow4911 you're saying that like Zidane was constantly dominant. In the 1999/2000 Zidane had one assist and one goal from open play. In his last 3 seasons for juve they didnt win the Serie A, they won two in a row after he left, and the exact same thing happened in Madrid. Zidane is one of the most entertaining players of all time but not effective and consistent enough to be considered as one of the top 3 players of all time. Messi and Ronaldo have consistently scored 40+ goals a season since their early twenties.

Since i started watching football, the French team won everything so i became their fans. I never felt the French team were very sportsman like, but loved that they dug really really deep. And what more can you say about Zidane you summed it up pretty well. In 2006 after the 2002 and the 2004 debacles i had 0 hope on France doing anything significant, at best they were just going to make it out of the group. But then they beat Spain and then against Brazil who were like a well oiled machine they completely stunned them and Zidane was the center of it all and even in the Semi Finals...Even in the final France dominated the 2nd half they were creating a lot of chances...and if it were not for Buffons presence of mind and premonition that Zizou header would have gone in..i still think if Zidane did not loose his head France would have won without even needing the penalties.....Yes he may not have the goal count, but I feel he is better than Ronaldo or Messi in getting/creating goals at the clutch moments..for me he is a GOAT...

What makes him better in my opinion, is that he made the whole team better. That's the mark of the greastests.

@Eden Hazard Messi is probably not going to win a World Cup but that should not disqualify him from GOAT. For me Zidane performed out of his skin in clutch moments...Champions Leagues are important but World Cup performances are ultimate prizes...because it is once in a 4 year tournament.....and you have to adopt playing in likely unfamiliar territory
