Yes, there is a process named fuel system breeding, normally which can be conducted through a DTC reader, so that you do not need crank so long, dry crank most potentially will kill your high pressure fuel pump.

When I was watching you crank over the car car to get it started , it looks like you are generating some sparks around the fuse box (top right corner of the engine bay) I only see it after you had charged the battery overnight. I recently did my injector seals on my Alpina D3 Biturbo (N47 same as 123D) and had to crank it for ages before it fired up! It's a big moment of relief when they finally fire up into life 😅 I kept switching the ignition on and of (without cranking) for 15 second intervals, I was told this activates the lift pump in the tank? Either way, it fired up and runs like a beaut now 💪 Great video as always George 👍

The flat battery wasn't the reason it wouldn't start, the fuel system needed to have the air bled out of it first, all you did was overheat your starter whilst bleeding the air out of the system, they have an electric fuel pump in the fuel tank which lifts the fuel to the high pressure fuel pump on the engine, ignition on 30 seconds (power up the electric fuel pump) then off, open the fuel leak off (fuel return) line ignition on 30 seconds see if you have fuel coming out of the leak off line, if you do the system is primed with fuel, if you have fuel, air, heat (glow plugs) and timing there is no reason it won't start.
It was the battery. It didn’t have enough voltage to crank it fast enough. It takes a bit of cranking to bleed the air out and it dipped too low to allow that to happen. Started fine once the battery was charged👍🏻

My 2c - fit the ac etc onto the engine when off - it's easier, there's room, so... also, hoik the transmission off - it's a faff installing the engine onto the box, install the box onto the engine once it's in - far simpler. You have only 2 points to worry about - the engine mounts, then. As engines go, the N47 is one of the easiest to take out, repair & re-install. Don't make problems for yourself - do it the easy way. Fit everything, drop it in, connect the loom, the exhaust & the transmission, heater hoses, blah blah - there's acres of space, so no need to waste that luxury.

Great job! I'd love to get my timing chain changed as the cars on 212k now, iv always serviced it and changed the oil regularly and always used good fuel but for peace of mind I'd like to get the chain done. Just had a new clutch so iv invested in it already 😅

Its developed an oil leak now but the breather from the turbo to the roker cover was broken so iv changed that, juts waiting to see if that's why I had oil on the drive 😬🤞
How was the car staring after the first fire up? Did it start easily (like normal) or did you notice any longer than normal delay. I get the first time starting up it need prime the fuel and oil around so it takes a bit but just wanted get a follow up after the initial “first time start”
Sorry for the change in topic, my BMW X1 e84 diesel runs perfectly in engine idle, but sometimes the car struggled to accelerate over 2500rpm, a garage replaced my corroded Flexi exhaust hose and it was fine, I now have to reset throttle with accelerator pedal to the floor for a minute and turn off ignition, I have to do this every two or three days, once reset the rpm goes up to 4500rpm. So I don't know if it's a throttle pedal sensor, new fuel filter which was last changed 38000 miles ago or do I need to add cataclean, I regenerate the dpf filter every month using Bimmertool as I drive low miles. Any response would be appreciated 😊
@@GeorgeAusters cheers for responding, regenerated dpf on long run the other day, it's down at 8% soot👍the rpm is fine for now, will add cataclean when I am down to quarter of a tank, take it a run and refill👍ps I already added dpf cleaner.
I’m not sure I fully understand the question but I’m assuming you mean why didn’t I replace the crank sprocket? And that’s because it is built onto the crank itself 👍🏻

Superb, very informative and I've watched all 4 of them. I drive a 2009 e61 lci model but I have 2 errors codes. 1st one is " 4CAE. EGR controller position sensor signal " My question is; do I have to clean the egr completely or just by a new sensor? 2nd is " 00A2CD I think it's the crankshaft sensor " Can you please help me out with this? No issuses with taking out or putting my engine back in. BUT now when I try can start the engine I just hear a click and the ignition goes off by itself after a few seconds. Ive had a Bosch dianostic tester on and no faults showed up. Any idea what causes that? My car is a 08 520d lci
I just had the timing chain replaced in my 320D Coupé, and the BMW service didn´t take out the engine, they replaced the chaing from underneath the car, by removing the gearbox.
the engine i worked on was a f11 5 serie 220.000 and first engine was history at 180.000 the new engine had new cam chain hmm it didnt snap but jumped and camshaft housing cracked and broke many rockerarms i tested the comp and no valves was hurt new chain kit and it didnt start up easy 2 injectors needed a soft hit from a hammer to seal the flame washer
Was mostly condensation in my case. White smoke on startup can also be unburnt fuel. It’s not normal to get that amount of smoke everytime you start up👍🏻
George Austers Ik, it would be a concern if that much came out, but mine is very light, you can only see it when u take the engine cover off and look closely. I’ve noticed there is a bit of oil around my oil cap too. Not pooling or leaking but it just on the surface. Could it be something to do with that. It’s a 200k 320d aswell.
Hm,how?Only if the engine has alot of mileage, but no it can't be cheaper.To change the engine they need to take the old engine out,and when they take the engine out,changing the timing chain is just an 1-2 hours more work and the chain is much much cheaper than an used engine which might also need a new timing chain.But if the chain broke then yeah,might be cheaper to change the engine or not even then,'couse there might not be very much damage...But it's not cheaper to change engine rather than the chain,sure for working hand it is more if you change the the chain but you need to understand you need to invest in another engine...
@@prendedaj22 you are right. The problem is these kind of work, you have to go to BMW specialise Machanic. And they will ok will do the chain but once we open the engine there might be more issues. So you have to keep you check book open. the car with around 1200. . And to do the timing chain they quoted 700. They only use original parts. Imagine they find the vanos needs replacing. Oil pump. Hydraulic tappets. Because they are all part of engine noise making. Imagine the Bill. I have decided will sell the car and get a 330ci. Definitely 6 cylinder .no more 4 cylinder s
The N42 is a different engine, the timing chain is at the front and can be changed with the engine in the car, book time for changing those is 6.8 hours. I charge £625 for the complete job including all parts (chain kit, oil, oil filter, gaskets and seals, auxiliary drive belt). There is no way in the world I would ever recommend a used engine instead of renewing the chain, if that's all the car needed. The N47 as George has here, the book time is 13 hours, they can be done in the car as well (by removing the gearbox), although probably easier to remove engine if doing it on the driveway and certainly far less fiddly to change the chain that way. Plus much better for making a video showing the process, well done George really good video series.
I know this is a longshot, but maybe anyone had a problem with the xenons? When I start the engine mine go down like they're supposed to, but then they go up way too much and stay there, blinding other people on the road. I have no idea what could be the problem, I don't get any fault messages on the dashboard or infotainment system everything seems to be connected, also a third of the time I drive headlights work properly. There are no sounds coming from the headlights, I didn't modify the suspension and I don't have the adaptive headlights. I don't want to blind others, but I also have to drive daily to make it from work to lectures and driving on DRL is a bit dangerous. I have 1er e81 if that makes any difference.
My mechanic fired up the engine after changing the timing chains and tensioners. The engine timing was off and the noise came after a few moments. The new tensioner for the top timing chain broke again. Any idea why?

You should open the injector fittings, to allow the air to escape, she would have started a bit handier. Good job though, and well done.

4cae = potentiometer on EGR is bad. I'd replace EGR.

Did you remove the front bumper to allow the hoist more room to install the engine back in..?
Had to remove the bumper because the engine crane wasn’t long enough

You see when you first started the car, there was white smoke, I see that come out of my 320d, is that normal???

Get your mechanic to fit you a new engine
