      Cliffe wants to prove that God is foundation for morality, he said multiple times that Matt can't explain why slavery is immoral, which suggests that Cliffe doesn't know why slavery is immoral. Cliffe is hopeless. He has been doing this so long he has his established talking points and will not vary from them. Stuart knows his position is weak but has to stay true to his pop and his ministry. I like Stuart. He will come out of the closet one day when he figures out how to keep the income stream active. @Jim Merrilees Because they were chosen to teach about God to the rest of the people in the world. Look, I don't believe any of it and most/all of it is just made up propaganda or repackaged myths from the surrounding people but according to their own book, they are the suffering servant, they are chosen to follow God in a certain way so they can teach the gentiles about God, not to turn them into Jews though that would be nice, its about their role in the world. God curses them all the time for falling away from the purpose which he has called them to. So they were in Egypt because they were inconsiderate little brats...biblically speaking. That's always why bad stuff happens to them but then they repent and God stops with the beatings.

      @Jim Merrilees I think you didn't read the part where I said, "...look, I don't believe any of it and most/all of it is just propaganda or repackaged myths from the surrounding people *but according to their own book*..."
      That was pretty early on in my comment. I'm simply providing an explanation for what the Jews mean when they say they are "chosen". That despite the value of exclusivity we place on "chosen" that it's not like that for them. Rather, it's a responsibility and a burden.
      Whether there is a God or not, whether the Exodus happened exactly as depicted in the book of Exodus. Whether or not Jesus was a fictional character who was later Euhemerized or a historical figure who was later mythologized. My comment was complete and free from problems, logical, evidentiary or otherwise.
      Please issue a full retraction and a check in the amount of $6.66 to make whole the pain and suffering you have caused me and also please compose a haiku extolling my humility and grace...or I'll condemn you to an eternity of everlasting conscious torment.

      In my experience, silence isn't lying. What comes after the silence maybe, but at least when people are silent after a question it shows they're thinking.
      I don't expect apologists to punch themselves in the face like that in a "live" debate. But at least at some level they're thinking about things. Whether their position and their public stance will ever allow that to translate into ideological change is another thing entirely.

    • @davidwilliams3397
      @davidwilliams3397 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@talktomeaboutlife That they have to think about it was for me the whole point it is often that sign of cognitive dissonance because you can see that they are calculating what the response should be to what is a simple answer do you wish to be a slave. The point is that instinctivly your answer is no but them saying no have repercussions that affect their faith. hence silence is not them 'thinking' it is them in a gotcha question where either answer breaks their beliefs say yes then you are accepting that slavery is good say no and you are saying that the bible is wrong
      hence the strenuous attempt at saying that the bible does not condone slavery. The catch 22 is the problem

    For a theist, accepting criticism of scriptures is similar to a parent accepting a criticism of their child's intelligence. It is a personal affront and embarrassment to being genetically or emotionally connected to error or dysfunction, which means holding and defending a position under intense identity markers compromises objectivity to self assess and correct. Further, scriptures are by definition entirely conceptual in nature, so if you are in love with those concepts, divorcing yourself from any single facet would undermine them all. A fear and dread too strong for most theists to overcome.

      @Language and Programming Channel That's the first part of the conceptual process is forming an opinion on possibilities. The second conceptual part is forming an argument for probabilities and the third is outlining a method to support the other two in reality - or perceptual truth. Concepts are little more than bridges attempting to reach perceptual reality. It's the testable, repeatable method that increases confidence in concepts reaching truth.

    • @jaclo3112
      @jaclo3112 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes he is. despite the fact that Deuteronomy lists the little virgin girls as war plunder to be distributed among the soldiers and priests with the cattle. And also despite the fact that Deuteronomy 21:10-25:19 goes into great detail how to legally make a female POW a sex slave. They call it 'marriage' but in the bible marriage is indistinguishable from sex slavery and the slaver could throw her out if she no longer satisfied him. He just couldn't sell her as she was now damaged goods.
      What's also disturbing is ISIS used the laws set out in Deuteronomy, as depicted in the Quran, as the basis for their own legalisation to allow soldiers to take female POWs as 'brides' for their own pleasure. And going by the views of the Christian men in the debate, they would agree with this as the soldiers 'married' the slaves before raping them as was done in the bible. ignoring the fact that the consent of the girls and women was not even an afterthought...be it in this kind of sanctioned marriage or any marriage in the bible. And because these laws come from their god, the morality is "objective". it's truly sickening how religion rots a person's brain like this.

    5:46 "God said it, I believe it. That settles it!! Anyone who disagrees, is putting themselves above God, which is the heart of sin!!"
    So then, why is Cliffe putting himself above God, and contradicting Yahweh's clear, explicit instruction in the Pentateuch, supported by Jesus all through the New Testament, that slavery IS morally permissable?
    Cliffe may be one of these wishy-washy, post-modernist types who thinks that what is/isn't "moral" changes every time the wind shifts, but God only has ONE set of OBJECTIVE, FIXED, UNCHANGING moral laws- the ones He decreed to Moses, which describe the correct, moral way to own and beat your slaves, and which require ALL followers of Yahweh to stone to death anyone who works on the Sabbath.
    If you don't follow those Old Testament laws, as Jesus repeatedly requires, then you aren't worshipping the God of the bible. It's just that simple.

The problem is that they are only when it's convenient. I think Stuart, and Cliffe gave Dr. Josh too much leeway because he's agnostic. It looks to me as if early on they thought they could subtly smear Matt, and appeal to Josh's agnosticism as Josh being more open to their position. That was a huge mistake. By the end it looked like Cliffe had figured that out because he started to treat Josh more like he was treating Matt earlier. Or maybe that's uncharitable of me. But I think Stuart, and Cliffe do tend to treat agnostics with more respect which gave Josh a big opening to destroy their interpretation of specific verses. Whatever was going on it did not end well for the Knechtle team.

    If you are a Christian there is a way out of this. You don’t have to live in denial and you won’t have to turn yourself in to a pretzel trying to defend the atrocities in the Bible. It is such a weight off your shoulders to be free of this nonsense. It is so freeing!

      Yes, but the "out" is to deny that God has anything to do with these prescriptions in the OT (i.e. these verses are not an accurate representation of his nature). BUT, then the Christian has to ask themselves if they should do this with the resurrection story as well.

      @@PineCreekDoug Hey Doug! This is Joy Bradford. TH-cam dropped me. It wasn’t my fault it was a failure at TH-cam.
      Anyway, I agree. When I read these difficult passages I feel I don’t need to read the 10,000 books by philosophers to understand what it says. I can read the words perfectly. And it says what it says. Listening to the father son team talking about slavery it makes me cringe. It actually hurts me to see such denial and justification for slavery.
      I hope you and the family are doing well!👍🌸

    the word "condone" is not interchangeable with "promote". if you check major websites, "condone" typically means "to absolve or to allow something that is typically unacceptable". so yes, if you make laws the organize slavery, even if you dont promote it, the right term is that you CONDONE it

    Job was NOT a Jew and the wider argument of the story of job is morally repugnant.
    I’m sure no one wants to be Job’s children who were pawns and dispensables and accorded to regard for their say in the matter.
    I don’t like the story of Job because the same protection over the life of Job was not extended to his Children.
