As a person with a unique name, I never found one of those personal name things you see in gift shops. When I received my first student recognition award with my name on it, in elementary school, it was one of my happiest moments.
how did you feel about your name growing up? Did you resent your parents for any challenges you faced because of it or did having a different name set you apart and make you feel special?
It isn't racist or disturbing. It's classist, but realistic. If your name is Jammall or Laquisha then your parents were most likely of lower economic status, whereas if you're black and your name is Jake or Kathy, then your parents might probably be college educated and higher income. Smart, successful black parents are not going to give their kids a name that sounds ghetto. But a teenage highschool dropout single mom might just name her baby something that sounds "cool" to her but which broadcasts the circumstances of her baby's origin and upbringing.
+Jeronimo Vasquez V If all other things are equal, then yes. If there are two people who have exactly the same resume but one has a name that indicates that their parents are more educated and the other has a name that indicates that their family is more "ghetto", then the reasonable thing to do is give preference to the person who presents themselves better. So if there was an african-american named John and a white guy named Billy-Bob, then of course you're going to prefer the person named John. Everyone will at least do this unconsciously.
+waltereg0 If i was a parent then i don't name my child Jammall because im poor or Jake because im a pimp and why do you think Billy-bob has no success in life? I don't know how employers in your world choose people to work with... A list with names maybe and you choose the people with the best names out?
+A nimation Actually what you name your child does indeed indicate your socioeconomic status and education. So a child that has the burden (a tiny burden, but as the video shows, it exists) of that name will be less likely to be successful than a child that has a "regular" name. Employers choose the best candidate for the job, based on the information they have about a person they don't know, and a name is the first piece of information that they get. It's at the top of every resume, the first thing a stranger hears, the first thing an employer reads, so it has to have an effect, including in your world the same as mine. I'm sure in your culture or community there are names that signify a lower class. less educated background.
I can tell you that my name makes me feel like a minimum wage worker. I hardly erver see people with my name in something other than minimum wage jobs.. So im changing it to Mack maybe
Fun thing: my mom's name is Yolanda so sometimes when cashiers ask for a phone number for a discount I give them hers and so they think that's my name. I am green eyed and on the pale side and I've had more than one person say "interesting name" or ask if it's a family name yet my mom never gets that and she is darker and brown eyed. I guess people expect Yolandas to be black or hispanic and when they see me, the name doesn't match the face
My Muslim family called me Ahmad, not a "white sounding" name, even though I am white, and grew up to not be a Muslim. Not a fan of my name. And I guess I might have picked Arthur as a nickname because it's kind of similar to my real name?
watvid1 I honestly don't know the complexities involved in changing it or if it's even possible in the country I live in. But I do think that I would change it if I ever attained a new citizenship, although it doesn't seem like that's going to happen any time soon or ever :)
True story. I changed my name in 2012 from Richard to Rich, as in work, fb, introductions etc…. And I actually became Rich from that point. I went from a divorce at 26 to being able to retire at 35 this year 😂 I believe that it’s a subconscious thing. If you say or hear the same thing over and over again… it is built into our subconscious belief. Some name it magical things such as ‘universal law’ some call it religion such as ‘speaking words over one another or prayer’ but it’s simply the subconscious mind and that’s why affirmations are so effective.

That worked different for that woman named: "Marijuana Pepsi Sawyer". Yeah, this isn't a joke.
My first name is Mallory and means bad/ill willed. My last name means drunken man. I’m certainly not going to do anything bad or become a drunk. I’m going to go on and become an artist. Hopefully at my dream job.
How about going the opposite way. If your last name is Payne, for instance, does that make you more or less likely to become a dentist? I mean, would a person hesitate to go to a dentist named Dr. Payne, and should this discourage people named Payne from studying dentistry. Well, some very quick research on Google, I typed in "Dr. Payne DDS" and a whole bunch of dentists named "Payne" came up, so maybe being named "Payne" subconsciously connects a person to the study of dentistry. He/she is named "Payne", so this makes one subconsciously want to inflict "pain". Let the researchers dig into that.
There are alphabet surname effects as well. In the UK, we're 50-50 A-M and N-Z in the phone book (remember them?) But ... in positions of power, like MPs and military commanders, you're more likely to get 2/3 A-M and 1/3 N-Z. When you get to prime ministers, it's even more extreme: when I last counted, I think it was 22 A-M, and just 3 or 4 N-Z, including (of course) the last two. Before then we'd had only two (Wilson and Thatcher) since 1900, IIRC. Science and technology, by contrast, is heavily weighted towards the N-Zs, again by about 2/3 when I last looked ... and yes, I'm a scientist with a surname beginning with S.
The reason behind name prejudice is actually more psychological than simple prejudice. This is because people are naturally drawn to other people with similarities to themselves as proven in several studies. Whether it be physical, mental, or by name. The best example of this would be public schools. All of the various cliques are clear as day with the nerds, jocks, geeks, and clowns. It's pretty easy to see that even within those cliques there will be smaller groups between race, hobbies, attitudes, etc. As such people with "white sounding names" are far more common than people with "black sounding names" meaning that people with those names are more likely to be hired over other people.
Hmmmm... My daughter's name is Shania - but I spelled it Shaniyah so she would have 24 letters in her name. Her dad, her and I all have 22 letters (she was born 0:22am) (our anniversary was 1.22) BUT if we got married (we didn't) I would have had 23 in my name and I wanted us to be in numerical order. 22 (dad) 23 (me) 24 (her). Some say Shaniyah (spelled like that) is ghetto... But it's just the spelling to make her name longer numeric wise... sigh.
I currently work with the Machiguenga people in the Amazon and they told me in times past they didn't have names. They lived in small family groups in the forest and only called each other "mother", "brother", "son" and so on...
My name means "a hill covered in broom/gorse." So a hill covered in grass, flowers and other vegetation. That's pretty funny, because I considered being an Environmental Engineer.
Commenting in 2018: I always wondered about my name and wanted to find at least one person in the world with the same name but I haven't so far. Hello! my name is Chuneedah Gul :)
When I was a little kid I hated my first name ,not knowing that I could be called by my middle if I wanted to ,if I had known that I would have preferred to be addressed by my middle name .
When I realized I was trans, I tried a few names before settling on Phoenix. I didn't think about it at the time but looking back on it it's kinda interesting how it represents my rebirth as my true self
What name do you guys like better: Dan or Garrett? Have you ever heard of the Kabalarians? You can go to their website - they do name reports based on your birth time, numerology, and sound frequency. They've been around since 1930.
I have visited their website I think changing name would not help me i already have a well established name i would be a mess to change your name I think they say for a name change just to make money nothing else
This was an interesting video with a lot of great facts. I just wish you would stop trying to be funny. The jokes aren't particularly clever and they're honestly just distracting from the information. I think you should lose the attempts at humor and just make a great informative video.
Let me say this up front: I'm a white dude with very, very common Anglo first and last names, the combination of which could be both "black" and "white." Like many white people, I too wondered about "black" first names, specifically those for females. Because I find the idea of ridiculing people's names repulsive, I became particularly repulsed by mockery of unique black female names once I discovered the method many of them are chosen: They are a combination of two or more names, most often the mother and father. For instance: Shaniqua could be "Shane" + "Monique" with an "a" added to the end to make it more feminine. I think this is a wonderful way to honor your forebears. To those of you who would criticize a name for being "made up," get this through your skull: ALL names were, at one point, made up. At some point in the future, I suspect "Dweezil" will be about as common as "Jimmy."
my name is not an English name but in English it means something along the lines of kind hearted so growing up i always tried to live up to what my name meant lol.
I love that resume study. It's funny how everyone who cites it, leaves out the part where there's no difference in the hiring rate between the two resumes. Racist employers are no more likely to hire you if you're black, whether you have a white name or not. All putting a black sounding name on your resume does is save you the time of dealing with employers who were never going to hire you. Racism is a fact of human evolution. Same group preference will never leave the human genome. Making it illegal to harm people based on race is one thing, but this thought police BS is totally different.
What i heard that religions like islam, christianity , and Judaism believe that God put something into person's name that defines the personality. Like for example, all girls who have Sara's name are beautiful and have strong personality.
Well people get my first name wrong all the time and it can also be used for a girl's name or a boys name. I got so sick of being called the wrong first name that I went by my middle name for a while. Everybody can get my middle name right but not my first name. I have a love hate thing with my first name. I like it but hate that everybody gets it wrong
this is true. I have a white name. a Turkish white woman's name. i have experienced preference in workplaces and have gotten interviews very fast. the name bias is very true. also because I speak as though my parents taught at Yale employers make assumptions. my parents do speak like that lol. Several times when an employer was excited about my face to face after viewing my credentials and speaking with me on the phone i went in for the final interview and you should have seen their faces crack and drop when I came in....they were totally shocked and tried everything to squeeze out of hiring me for the project. they were literally at a loss for words and red faced. they could have assumed that i was a white female architect. lol. then they saw me. a copper toned almond shaped eyed not-white-by-a-long-shot female architect. lol experiences like this are LOADS of fun....
Oh and people with a name are more likely to marry someone with the same first initial as their own name. For example, if your name is Andrew then you're more likely going to marry someone named Amy instead of marrying someone named Karen. Because Andrew and Amy both start with the letter A
I feel like my name is so boring, common, and vague that I could really be anything, at least based on first and last name. But I should probably be a florist based on my middle name.
I was named after a warrior who was got hit by 13 arrows trying to protect someone in battle, and lived on even after the protected person, so...... (true story, no joke)
Ofc you would rather have someone with a "white sounding" name, there is a greater chance that the person is proficient in the native language, and have a western cultural background. The same way in the middle east, people with arab sounding names get an advantage. Not everything is "disturbing"
Well... around here... people with my name are usually house cleaners or old house wives. Still love my name. I specially enjoy trying to get people to pronounce it.
I know a couple that named their kid Kahos. Don't tell me that's not going to have a deep negative effect on his character or the way he's perceived by others. To me it is just plain cruel.
Well my name is Abigail and I want to become an Astrophysicist or an Anthropologist.. or an Ambassador.... shit... I'm totally rethinking my life now...
OH man, my name is Tamer (im from Germany) and I am a matematician, while math in German means shortly "Mathe", which contians many on my name´s letters...
makes sense. everytime i get an interview for a job ive applied to online, the interview person has this look in their eyes as if they were surprised that im not white cause of my name :( if i could change my name id probably go with a less ''white name'' just so people would stop getting weirded out
It's not about discrimination in the workplace. It's about what those names symbolise... ghetto names means ghetto behaviour. No healthy company wants to pay money for that
This is actually really scary when you think of it. Names can affect the impression people have of you. Could you future be determined before you are even born? For example, Buzzfeed's video on names. What if your name is just an indication of what type of person you grow up to be? It's just frightening when you think of it.
Hi Ben my name is Duane,im white british but people assume I'm black American when in fact the name has viking origins.ive been in my trade for 15 years but rarely get interviews let alone call backs.im considering using my middle name Robert on my CV.
Good Mythical Morning made a video about this.. all it was is it could influence what you might do in the future... but said your name might determine confidence.
With how personal and almost primal one's name can be, is there a study about how one's feelings toward their name affects their personality or life? Since we ascribe so much of our identity to our name, how one feels about said name would have to affect us in many ways. Of course a challenge would still be the nature vs nature debate but if you take 2 people with the same name, one likes their name and one hates it what sort of difference could you expect? What about unique names vs generic/common ones? I have a generic name and never really liked it but seeing someone else with my same name and seeing how different their life seems always interested me. Some automatically assume a unique name will lead to bullying and thus parents shouldn't name their kids something that goes again the norm, but then what about those with unique names that rise to something greater despite or because of it?
I couple l know named their baby KAHOS. What do you that is going to do to that child when he catches on to what CHAOS means. What about his life experiences carrying a label like THAT! What were they thinking!
What about the names that are for the opposite gender? For example, naming a girl Ryan, Brent or Tyler. I would say naming boys girl's names, but I haven't seen that happen, but I see girls named traditionally boy names all the time.
Max Powers, he's the man whose name you'd love to touch, but you mustn't touch! His name sounds good in your ear, but when you say it, you mustn't fear! Cause his name can be said, by anyone!
If your name is Dennis your going to be a tennis player. If your name is Jane your going to work selling cocaine. If your name is Billy your going to work as a clown. If your name is Randy your going to be a chef who makes candy. If your name is Austin your going to work with tin. If your name is April your going to be a pharmacist. If your name is Jake your going to work for a company that does yard work. If your name is Bill your going to spend your life in jail. If your name is Joe your going to be a foot doctor.
Vanessa= 1 lonely person with no future that escalated quickly. !Warning! If anyone with the name Vanessa, I was just titting/kidding. Except not kidding about my life.
Is it really racism though? If two job applicants are identical and one has a name that implies a closer social connection to the company members (assuming they haven't personally met the applicants, in which case demeanour is the qualifying factor), then by definition one is, probabilistically, more qualified than the other... If the job applicant with the less 'white sounding name' had a application more impressive enough to rule out social contribution probabilities, then it would be racism...
My first name is Alfredo and I am a Chef haha. its so related .
As a person with a unique name, I never found one of those personal name things you see in gift shops. When I received my first student recognition award with my name on it, in elementary school, it was one of my happiest moments.

It isn't racist or disturbing. It's classist, but realistic. But a teenage highschool dropout single mom might just name her baby something that sounds "cool" to her but which broadcasts the circumstances of her baby's origin and upbringing.

My name is Ron Joseph. What does that sound like
It sounds like Ron Joseph
Prejudice by ethnically-different names?Well that pretty much tells us how far we really are from our common goal.
And eminem said my name is what? My name is what? My name is slim shady
OH man, my name is Tamer (im from Germany) and I am a matematician, while math in German means shortly "Mathe", which contians many on my name´s letters...
I once saw a buzzfeed video called "José vs. Joe" which is similar to the are Emily and Greg more likely to get a job then lakisha and jamal.
makes sense. everytime i get an interview for a job ive applied to online, the interview person has this look in their eyes as if they were surprised that im not white cause of my name :(

Omg That's why I want to be a cooperative lawyer because my name means truth in French xD
Hi Ben my name is Duane,im white british but people assume I'm black American when in fact the name has viking origins.ive been in my trade for 15 years but rarely get interviews let alone call backs.im considering using my middle name Robert on my CV.

but said your name might determine confidence.
"Felicia, Bye" "Bye Felicia" lmao
Hey my guy looks like the boy from the first Jurassic film all grown up.
Names likely have a psychological impact on us as we grow and develop at a young age which sets into place once we reach full adult maturity.
what my name says about me and my name is Juuli i want to know what it says about me !😆😉🤔😐😑😶🙄
BYE FELICIA!!!
Omg, My first and last initials together is M.D and I wan't to be a medical doctor....
Some automatically assume a unique name will lead to bullying and thus parents shouldn't name their kids something that goes again the norm, but then what about those with unique names that rise to something greater despite or because of it?
bye felicia
I couple l know named their baby KAHOS. What do you that is going to do to that child when he catches on to what CHAOS means. What about his life experiences carrying a label like THAT! What were they thinking!
What about the names that are for the opposite gender? For example, naming a girl Ryan, Brent or Tyler. I would say naming boys girl's names, but I haven't seen that happen, but I see girls named traditionally boy names all the time.
My name is Angel, Not sure what it could make me, but often I am automatically labeled as a really, really nice guy. lol
Sergio...surgeon. My dad and I (both are named Sergio) are surgeons. My smallest child (Sergio Godoy III) wants to be a surgeon too.
Max Powers, he's the man whose name you'd love to touch, but you mustn't touch! His name sounds good in your ear, but when you say it, you mustn't fear! Cause his name can be said, by anyone!
Yes. Def Jam.

Atlantis ....i think My mame is like lost a paradise
Vanessa= 7 letters - letters= 7 + days= 7 days= 1 week- week= 1 + one lonely person with no future = 1 lonely person with no future.
Vanessa= 1 lonely person with no future
that escalated quickly.
Shouldn't Dennis play tennis and since your name is Bowlin, shouldn't you do.......BOWLING ಥ‿ಥ
What would the career be for Kylie
What about the people with names like "Sssst"(pronounced "Forest") and La-a(pronounced "Ladasha")? What kind of jobs do they get???
So, my name being Iris, a flower, I am more likely to be a florist?
