    Two very important details which have not been mentioned in this video!
    1. Adobe and concrete do not get along. They absorb moisture, breathe, expand and contract differently. This means everywhere concrete, cement mortar and adobe are mixed in any fashion are weak points which will separate much more rapidly. For examples of the damage this can cause, check out any of the restoration attempts on existing adobe structures done in the late '60s and into the '70s. I had the displeasure throughout the '90s of assisting in corrective restoration on several of these structures. All concrete had to be removed, then new adobe was used to fix the areas properly.
    The metal reinforcements placed every 4 levels will also expand and contract differently, causing even more destruction. You would be better off using jute twine.
    2. Adobe historically is covered with lime to protect it. Adobe and lime work well together in regards to moisture and expansion. Look for slaked lime. It works just like plaster, and hinders erosion.
    Always keep in mind, just because something is legal code, doesn't mean it's a good idea or good design. Code becomes code because someone in a government position thought it was a good solution for a problem they may not have understood.

      I have a 100 year old adobe home. The walls are starting to crack. Thank you for this info. When I’m able to afford a contractor to fix the cracks, this is something I’ll be asking them. My house was built right on the earth. Foundation was added many years later. The daughter of the man who built the home said they had dirt floors when she was growing up in the home.

    In our area we use lumber/planks from base itself without any bricks. We pour local mud/soil into the planks holders and beat it with wood mallet. Once cured these walls get so tough that even an axe or any handheld digger would struggle make a dent into it.

    • @RoneiRamos
      @RoneiRamos ปีที่แล้ว

      Sim. Mas um rapaz fez um comentário importante aqui nesse vídeo que deixarei traduzido.
      "1. Adobe e concreto não se dão bem. Eles absorvem a umidade, respiram, expandem e contraem de forma diferente. Isso significa que em todos os lugares em que concreto, argamassa de cimento e adobe são misturados de qualquer maneira, há pontos fracos que se separarão muito mais rapidamente. Para exemplos dos danos que isso pode causar, confira qualquer uma das tentativas de restauração em estruturas de adobe existentes feitas no final dos anos 60 e nos anos 70. Tive o desprazer ao longo dos anos 90 de auxiliar na restauração corretiva em várias dessas estruturas. Todo o concreto teve que ser removido, então foi usado novo adobe para fixar as áreas adequadamente.
      Os reforços de metal colocados a cada 4 níveis também se expandirão e se contrairão de maneira diferente, causando ainda mais destruição. Seria melhor usar fio de juta.
      2. Historicamente, a Adobe é coberta com cal para protegê-la. Adobe e cal funcionam bem juntos em relação à umidade e expansão. Procure por cal virgem. Funciona como o gesso e impede a erosão.
      Tenha sempre em mente, só porque algo é um código legal, não significa que seja uma boa ideia ou um bom design. Código se torna código porque alguém em um cargo do governo achou que era uma boa solução para um problema que talvez não tivesse entendido."

    I have experimented with cob building a small chicken coop and really loved the sturdy nature of the building but the downside is that it is extremely labour intensive. Wanting to build our own home I was curious if it would be possible to use a cob mixture in between the Adobe bricks that we could press holes into (just like in a cob structure) to later help us to apply a layer of cob finishing or plastering to the walls. Would this add any extra strength to the structure as we have expanding soils in our area that tend to crack. Would it actually be possible for the cob mixture to adhere to the Adobe brick?

    Why not just make a lot of Gringo Blocks and use those instead of adobe bricks? That way, if you need a hollowed-out space, you can have that more easily, and also, that way, if you want to nail up a picture or something, you can do that. Plus, installing windows would be much easier. So this way, you get the usability of the wood and the insulation/fire protection of the bricks inside the wood. You could still use mortar, too. Also, you could do a "half Gringo" sort of thing, where it's like two pieces - one wood and the other adobe brick, fitted together when the adobe is being baked by the Sun into it's final form. The wood portion would go on the inside, and the brick on the outside. That way, there would still be something to nail onto, on the inside, and all the bricks would be on the outside. Again, mortar would still hold it all together.
