      My pet peeve is watching a video and just hearing a list of made up numbers that mean nothing. I wanna know what the carpet feels like, what breakfast costs and where do I find the nearest cocktail bar! Luckily, the small Rouge One is perfect for that!

      I guess it might just be a case of British media not getting enough exposure as popular American media. A shame really.

    • @greenaum
      @greenaum 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@geoffreyrichards6079 Well, it does in Britain. And we understand it better, since it's aimed at us and our culture. We get all the jokes and stuff without needing explanation... usually... We get the general emotional feel of the thing, American stuff is always upbeat even in miserable circumstances. We're depressed even in upbeat circumstances!
      Did you ever see that video of Big Bang Theory with the canned laughter cut out? You can see, they leave a pause after most sentences for the obligatory laughs. British comedy isn't so craven. Not so desperate to validate our jokes with laughter, real or otherwise. We don't point out the jokes because we assume the audience is intelligent enough to get them, and if they don't, there's no point telling them.
      American sitcoms are... stupid! They're really aimed at the low-IQ market, but Americans aren't really any stupider than other nations. We'll put politics to one side for a second. But apart from that, I don't think Americans need all the laugh-gaps and canned laughter and everyone ending their sentences with a Groucho eyebrow wiggling or a "hey hey!", or a cymbal crash. But they're there anyway. Maybe it's "notes" and insecre executives.
      In the UK we don't have that, much stuff is made by independent studios who sell their shows to the networks. The BBC have their own in-house production facilities but they let their producers and directors work unbothered and free. So they're able to take risks, where US mainstream sitcoms don't even take the smallest ones. Everything has to be suitable for literally everyone, and you can't risk offending either side of the massively partisan, hugely biased, political scene. It's not really a "spectrum" when everyone's blue or red, no greens and yellows in the middle.
      Though when you *actually* survey people... it turns out most people actually agree on nearly everything about how life should be lived, how a country should function, what sort of laws we need and don't need. Regardless of which party they've been hoodwinked into identifying with. Through scaremongering and inciting outrage, usually. Mostly, people are OK. But politics is so *poisonous* now, they'll do any horrendous thing in the name of Our Team vs Their Team. But when it comes down to what actually makes a difference, both teams are "help the rich get richer, give more money to the rich, lower taxes for the rich (but pretend ordinary people are going to benefit). Then, retire, and go join the board of some company you did favours for, for a well-paid sinecure. Worse than some banana republic, at least there you get bananas!
      Pardon the rant...

    I smegging love Red Dwarf! Been a fan since I was a kid! I got to meet Craig Charles and Robert Llewellyn when I was a teenager when they came to my area for a public TV pledge drive Red Dwarf marathon that my mom was volunteering for. They were both total sweethearts and hilarious too! Very generous with their time and love for their fans. I gave Craig Charles a drawing of Red Dwarf that I made and they signed a bunch of stuff for me! Robert Llewellyn called me a "big lug"! That still makes me laugh. :P One of my most treasured memories. This is a truly great show that not enough people know about, and I hope they still get to make more someday! Chris Barrie was a twat tho, I remember queuing to see him at comic con somewhere in the UK, I think it was Milton Keynes? IDK, but Robert and Danny were sweethearts, I remember Danny talking to me for so long about music and our band that the security had to come and shuffle us on then later I bumped into him while he was on the way to the toilet at he was like 'hey, I remember u! Music GUY!' and Robert Signed my Old windows Phone battery cover, but Chris? There were two Fit blondes behind me in the the queue, so as I go to shake his hand he looks right over my shoulder at the girls and thats it, Im moved on so he can hit on a couple girls a third his age. Always stuck with me which was a shame cos I was a huge brittas Empire fan and I really thought he was a decent dude, turns out What Doug and Grant Said about the characters was true: Theyre all extentions of the actors, so Rimmers portrayal isnt too far removed from what Rob and Doug ACTUALLY thought about Chris Barrie and his attitude.

    I never actually realised how well JMC looked after their employees... all the pieces were there, but I didn't put them together in my head. Considering the pessimistic and cynical picture Red Dwarf paints of the mid-to-far future of human space travel, realising how good the Dwarfers actually had it was a nice surprise!
    One *small* note though, if I may; Article 5 and the backup computer are a total fabrication, "Queeg 500" was literally a bored Holly twin-screen streaming with a different face and voice. I'm sure there was some kind of emergency contingency in place for the eventuality of a catastrophic/total computer failure, but Queeg himself never existed.

    • @spacedoutgame

      I did wonder re Queeg, but figured since Article 5 is listed on “official” space corps directives lists I’d punt for it!

      JMC's ships were definitely excellent, albeit with a few "minor" safety issues that likely could have been fixed with a little redesign, but they seemed to have a bad habit of hiring people into positions they couldn't handle. It's really telling that one of their ships could still be in livable shape after three million years, including having an entire species evolve, form a civilization, make holy war, then leave and still have functioning power and breathable atmosphere with the biggest issue turning out to be the local AI population only becoming moderately eccentric.

    I love that Red Dwarf was actually one of the most "realistic" (grounded in real science) sci-fis out there, esp in the early seasons. I think only the Expanse has done that more lol. @spacedoutgame  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes you can tell Silent Running, Dark Star and Alien had a massive influence in terms of a “realistic” future.. plus I really only scratched the surface of world building that was crammed into this show. You missed out other Sci-fi shows of late 1980s and 1990s. Some brilliant like UFO, Saffire and Steel; Others not so good, like Star Maidens and The Star Lost most of these were produced in Europe, not necessarily BBC. Star Lost produced in Canada.

      Did you ever see Lexx? Top, top scifi! Bit rude too, got too much so in the end, but really weird far-out plots, often really funny, often very dark and unpleasant (AND funny!). It's under-rated, often by reviewers who've only seen one episode. But start off from Series 1 Episode 1 and it all makes sense. And is full of action and excitement, as well as body-horror. NOTHING goes to waste in Whatever Century, a long long time ago.

    I remember going round to my mates house to watch the first televised episode of Red Dwarf … February 1988 … knowing it was a radio show, was expecting great things … it was ok! But I gave it a go, watched the next episode which was much better … a theme the production team maintained for the last 34 years! Just awesome.

    How strange is this:
    I met Craig Charles at 'Truckfest' (St Helens?) around 2005 (He actually had 4 'bodyguards' with him, LOL I don't know what he was expecting!))
    Shook hands with Chris Barrie at the Earls Court 'Classic Bike show' around 1998 (where he was oddly dressed like 'Ace Rimmer')
    I camped about 100m away from Robert Llewellyn at the 'Bug-Jam 18' when he turned up in a Split-screen VW Camper
    I met Danny John Joules at the NEC Bike show, when he rode in on a Barbie Pink Yamaha R1, about 2010
    . . . . . . Seems they all have a GENUINE love of the internal combustion engine in some way !
    Now, I Just need to meet Holly & Holly to tick all my 'Red Dwarf boxes' 🙂

    • @spacedoutgame
      @spacedoutgame  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome! I’ve only met Chris but he was absolutely lovely.
      Both Hollies were due to do stand up in my hometown but the pandemic scuppered it - worth keeping an eye on the comedy venues though 😎

      That's amazing you had opportunity meet nearly entire cast of Red Dwarf. I think Craig Charles had so many body guards because during early years of series the female fans were all over him. He was still popular after series end as host of Robot Wars.
