Puccini’s music and Richard Jones’s production capture the joy and heartache of young love in Paris. Sonya Yoncheva, performing Mimì, and Charles Castronovo, performing Rodolfo, sing 'O soave fanciulla'.
Richard Jones perfectly captures the blend of tragedy and comedy in La bohème, and provides an acute analysis of Puccini’s young would-be artists and their lovers, the soulful Mimì and spirited Musetta. Spectacular designs by Stewart Laing evoke both the poverty of the bohemians’ attic home and the splendour of Paris’s shopping arcades on Christmas Eve.
Puccini’s score is one of his most beautiful, with highlights including Rodolfo and Mimì’s introductory arias and love duet in Act I, ebullient music for the chorus and soloists in Act II, and Mimì’s poignant death scene, over which the composer himself wept. La bohème received its world premiere at the Teatro Regio, Turin, on 1 February 1896, and its Covent Garden premiere the following year. It is currently one of the best-loved operas worldwide, and the opera most performed at the Royal Opera House.

IMO, one of the most romantic scenes in opera history. Thank you, Giacomo Puccini, Sonya, Charles, and ROH!

Great Castronovo. Much better this Boheme than the one streamed from Munich with Kaufmann as Rodolfo.

Belle voci e bella esecuzione secondo partitura, senza quell'orrendo urlo di cappone sgozzato alla fine. Così è di una malinconia e di un incanto veramente struggenti.

Castronovo is a spitting image of Lin-Manuel Miranda. It's slightly spooky... Incredible tenor though.

Incredible tenor maybe for your standards. I don't know what they are but he doesn't have a single note that it's solid and stable. His voice trembles and wobbles and he has a hard time on the easiest passaggio. I think he should probably change maestro or technique.

Michael Fabiano and Nicole Car are far superior in this ROH production. Their performance is charming and mellifluous.
Yoncheva keeps going off pitch and sounds strident and clashes audibly with Castronovo, whose style is....meh.

@@AllieB-11.11 I agree with you, but a tenor need to be confident and solid when singing. Not a note he's taking is clear, solid and stable. I don't think the voice would be that bad, but his technique is not good at all.

@@paragod333 what you assume is not my problem , as to assume I don't know what I'm saying is somehow an arrogant and silly comment. His notes are trembling and wobbling. This happens when tenors don't have a solid knowledge of how to use their vocal instrument,or their technique is not a right one. If this is not clear we can converse in Italian, since this is an Italian art.

The ROH continues to waste tax payers money. They had an excellent production of this opera and didn’t need to waste subsidy on this replacement. Post Covid-19 is going to be tough and maybe the exchequer will be looking at ways to cut subsidies?

@@paragod333 I suggest you get a tiny bit of extra knowledge on the opera subject, widen up your horizons and only when you have a clear picture write comments. You talk as if this piece of aria is good or nearly perfectly performed, and this shows how partial your knowledge is. Listen to opera from the first recordings up to the 50s,and then so on until nowadays and maybe you get a better understanding of Italian composers and how they should be interpreted.
