Very good looks on stage no doiubt, I like Schrot more because he is so focused on the character,Castronovo is very good looking guy,no doubt about it ,so the production must be glad to put him in use!
I haven't even known about this opera or performers but was lucky to watch the whole production on a plane. And I couldn't help watching it twice. This production is all about the singers and their acting. Fantastic!! Is there any way to watch the complete opera again? No dvd?
directors/designers.... TELL THE STORY. who are they? where are they? what do they want? what are they doing? from what i see, it is a gay bar after closing. the dude with the sexy tats is trying to pick up the clean cut guy in the white shirt. guy in white shirt ain't into it. HOW does what we see here, in any way reflect or illuminate this wonderful text and sublime music? It does not. the shot out and into the house at the end .. all i could think is "people, you were cheated!" and that aria was one of the finest things i have ever heard from Charles Castronovo. it's a pity he had no help from anyone in the theatrical end of it, because his singing was gorgeous.
Is this from a production of the opera? If it is it is more of a non-production placing the two in front of a curtain. I've seen productions from Baden-Baden that were much more effective and beautiful. Schrott is no bass; the role demands a Pinza voice to make an effect. Castronovo on the other hand gave a nuanced and musical performance of the aria; I don;t think I have heard it more beautifully sung.
Castronovo is just wonderful, musically and visually. Mefistofele is not for Schrott, his voice is not big and deep enough for this role. Ridiculous production, as is nowadays standards.
agreed. for most of this aria he is heaven. when he has to go big in the large finale... you can hear the push. one hopes he stays in this rep, where he is really lovely. the examples of fine lyrics ruining their voices by the ego's need to do the heavier roles are everywhere present.
The baritone's acting is convincing , but his voice falls short in dramatic intensity. Castronovo is very solid, as usual. However, this is a horrible production. Mefistofele meets his end by being tied up in the curtain. I hate minimalist interpretations of this opera.
Castronovo is good?! What planet are you people on??? Do yourselves a favor, close your eyes and listen again. What do you actually HEAR? I hear: Pitch is all over the place. I can count about 3 times he's actually in tune. No squillo, no zing, no excitement, no theatricality, only singing to a mic mentality. Vowels indistinct. Voice swallowed. Fake darkness. A poor man's Kaufmann. But then again, so is Jonas. Ingollato. Voice is nasal. He's not giving one supported sound in the entire thing. HE's supporting with his tongue. He's thinking more about his physique, than actually SINGING. Real tenors never stood in this neutral position. That top note. FFS. It truly truly sucks (and Charlie knows it). Stop saying Mediocre is Good. LISTEN.
Thank you for speaking truth. I agree about the tenor but I did hear some squillo around 3:40 and after. But rather bland . Neither very good or very bad. The raw material is well above average , but since public taste allows mediocrity he only gives what they demand. But Schrott? He's a huge star but I am hearing him for the first time. He an interesting stage presence but nothing appealing about the voice. Very light. He's a basso? No depth. A lyric baritone but not much more. The public is easily impressed. When I hear Gala concert, the ovations ALWAYS go to the loudest singer, even when they suck.
Wow.. big opinion. Wonder how you sing if you do at all. Or perhaps an example of great singing.. castronovo can’t compare to the greats as no one can these days.. but I have a feeling you just don’t like modern singers in general. I love old recordings also but you obviously are holding a grudge against him.. makes me think you haven’t heard anyone else modern.
Im a director and producer of small scale opera myself and appreciate minimal sets that put focus on performers and are less costly. BUT this ridiculous, nebulous design concept is distracting, meaningless, looks aweful and probably cost millions. No doubt the director and/or designer thought they could fool the opera public or are convinced of thier own genius. The emperor has no clothes! For opera to regain its grandeur the priorities must be 1- vocal beauty. Character and interpretation come next. Sets and costumes should provide a framework and support- this is bullshit! I have great compassion for the singers who study long and hard when they arrive to start work on a new production and learn its one of these. But they suck it up. I guarentee when Schrott was learning and dreaming of one day singing this role- THIS was not what he had imagined.
menuda locaza full of glitter, Mefistofela, and that's all you can say about it , because the voice of Erwin Scrott is not suitable for this rol nor anyone, he is just the ex, a baritono third class, awful actor , overacting the whole opera. Castronovo is superbe as usual in everything, brilliant , full of squillo , colorful and very handsome in a very demanding rol for a tenor , he is a winner
Bravissimo superbissimo! Merci!
Quel magnifique duo ,ces voix tellement belles ,puissantes ,
A pleasant surprize these two Young artists from Latin America . They însure future of music .
Sublime duo !
quel merveilleux comedien que cet Erwin Scrott non seulement j'adore sa voix mais je suis abasourdi par sa présence
Molto bravo bella voce l'uso e la calibratura dello strumento vocale denota studio e talento!!! Complimenti Castronovo!!!
Muy buenos los dos!!!! Felicitaciones!!!
Castronovo is just perfect.

I’d definitely pick up the guy in white shirt, with a voice and looks like that I wouldn’t hesitate lol...
Maravilha 😘🌹
Erwin Escroto is a baritone , not a bass.
Millor, el tenor.

Idk what this opera is about or what they're saying but that looked and sounded pretty cool.
The Faust legend. Devil nearly gets him but Faust is saved at the end and sings 'Stay, thou art fair.' God, being Beauty, wins.
@@philcoppa Oh gotcha. Thanks 🌈👍🏾

He's a baritone who pretends to be a bass 😑
Loved the production. Castronovo wonderful as always. Schrott struggles vocally in my opinion.
Roberto Berner Shame on the director of this garbage production. Grand finale destroyed like this.
@Roberto Berner Schrott is a baritone playing a bass role. The struggle must be him trying to sing at a lower pitch that he is not familiar with
Amazing Faust performance by Castronovo In spite Schrott bad singing and ridiculous acting this should go to dvd. Thanks for sharing
Not for Schrott's voice...
Castronovo sings with the heart and mind. Schrott sounds uninvolved. Perhaps too difficult.
That was somewhat homoerotic... now I need a smoke.
quanta invidia
Castronovo is lovely., but hope he doesn't ruin his voice and lose his spinning upper register with heavier repertoire like this.
I can`t agree.he sounds just like a lirico spinto by now.Time to move to heavier roles(not too much)like this one
agreed.

Schrott come Mefistofele è ridicolo
