  • The search for Frank and Mary Oliva (missing person cold case documentary) could be over when this search takes AWP to Wilber Nebraska in hopes of solving the mysterious disappearance from July 28, 1971 when neighbors saw the couple come home between 8:00 and 9:00 that evening, just as it was getting dark, only to leave a few minutes later with Mary wearing nothing more than her housecoat.
    The Olivas have never been heard from again.
    Mary suffered from heart problems, high blood pressure and memory problems at the time of her disappearance, and she was also reportedly depressed.
    She had dental surgery days before her disappearance, required medication for her heart condition, pain medication for the dental surgery, both of which she left behind.
    Authorities and Frank Jr. (Frank and Mary's only living child at the time) believe the Olivas died by suicide together.
    The theory is that Frank Sr. drove their car into a water-filled sandpit because he felt he was unable to take care of Mary any longer.
    He was depressed over Mary's health and had said repeatedly that he would not put his wife in a nursing home.
    Investigators searched nearby sandpits but didn't come up with any evidence.
    This video documents our search in Wilber, Nebraska for Frank and Mary Oliva.

    ADDITIONAL DETAILS ABOUT THE CASE
    Their daughter-in-law, Shirley, came by after she found out they hadn't been seen for a week and their newspapers and milk deliveries had been piling up.
    The front door was closed but unlocked, nothing appeared to be out of place at their house, and Mary had left behind two bottles of medicine and her black purse, which she always carried with her.
    Only their beige 1958 Chevrolet 210 with the license plate number 225-910 was missing.
    Frank was born in Czechoslovakia. He moved to the United States at the age of seventeen and became a mason, carpenter and farmer.
    Mary is a Nebraska native.
    The Olivas moved to Wilber in 1957; many Czech immigrants lived in the town and they held a Czech Festival very year.
    After his retirement, Frank continued to take odd jobs in the area. Mary appeared to be happy in Wilber and she enjoyed working in her garden and playing bingo on weekends.
    Mary's son by her first marriage died in 1959, and in 1960 the couple's daughter died of polio. Only one child, their son Frank Jr., remained. Mary's health was declining by 1973 and Shirley, Frank Jr.'s wife, came over frequently to help out around the house.
    What do you think happened to Frank and Mary?
    Hug the ones you love for you never know when it might be the last time you see them.

    Frank and Mary are my great-grandparents. I think that you are probably correct in thinking that they are buried beneath what was once one of the sand pits, although Frank had, according to my family, mentioned "a cave" that he knew of where no one would ever be found. Shortly before they disappeared (and about a month before my next birthday), Grandpa Oliva gave me a gift because, as he stated, he wouldn't be there to give it to me on my birthday. I hope one day they are truly found.

      So very sorry for your loss, I can say with certainty the questions asked and the places the mind goes in cases like this never end. I had a grandmother missing for 30 years and it was hard on the whole family. I know you have searched the areas directly around the home and the radar of the filled in pond is an option but my questions are this. You mentioned a cave...Are there caves in the area? What about waterways on the way to hospitals that would have been in the area at the time? She left in a house coat maybe they were going to an emergency room somewhere? Back in the 70s in rural areas hospitals could be many miles from home and not in a 5 mile area where many of these cases happen. Did they have a place they always wished to go on vacation? Or a family trip spot they went to a lot? If they were going to go out together for lack of a better way of putting it, It seems to me they would want to be someplace that had meaning to them. The buried pit is close and likely but dont rule out that spot they met or lake they loved to visit. I hope someday the mystery is solved for your family.

Today, I am so very happy for you all, that this channel has become as large as it has. I hope that you are getting the donations needed to continue such important work. Many people may not realize that some counties don't have the resources for search and rescue let alone diving experts. Solving these mysteries and bringing closure to so many people is a wonderful gift. One I hope you all can continue for a very long time to come.

I thought Jared was gonna sh🤪t himself that day, lol. Jared has made this channel what it is today and if you guys let a network have it, they’ll take control, they have the $ and the asshole lawyers to make it that way, but if you do, it’ll take the humbleness out of the show. Everything will be scripted and basically, ruin what you have all made. Keep it real, Jared. Don’t let them ruin your hard work and def don’t let them ruin AWP. Stay safe, guys.

      Totally agree, if the pit is filled with sand certain ground penetrating radar systems can register up to 100 feet. Also if there was someone with a high end metal detector to check out the area would also be a option. Some high end metal detectors can detect 50-75 feet deep. Seeing as the target would be rather large it would be easy to rule out things that are smaller like rebar and metal fence posts, etc.

She was believed to be a victim of Ted Bundy until one day they were working on the floating bridge and found her car against a pillar underneath. Her remains were still inside. So I just felt what you were saying- it seems so sad that such a thing could happen. And it evidently happens way more often than I had previously realized.

I’ve only been a subscriber, and a returning viewer for maybe 6 months or so, but I already feel so proud of being part of a constantly and rapidly improving channel. I can’t say that about many other channels, most times it takes years for that feeling to surface. This reminds me of the story of the steamboat Arabia. It sunk on the Missouri River in 1853. The river changed course (many times) and the steamboat ended up buried 45 feet deep under a cornfield. A few Kansas City citizens used ground-penetrating radar to find the steamboat in the 1980's. They recovered the boat and it's cargo, much of which has been restored and resides in the Steamboat Arabia museum.
    I wonder if their car could be found with ground-penetrating radar?

      It actually makes me sad to see you say that. They started out with a very noble purpose using donations to clean waterways and they are moving away from that. I hope they never move to the discovery channel if they do that just makes it about money and fame and while its nice they find a family member or two their original purpose of cleaning water for everyone is just as noble a cause. Both can be achieved at the same time. Both are equally important.

    @Adventures with a purpose in regards to the filled in pond- I do dirt work for a living and I can tell you that any pond or body of water that is filled in has to be completely drained first. If it isn’t then any material that is filled in will never compact and the entire area would be a swamp. Not to say they vehicle isn’t there, but you would imagine it would’ve been spotted once the pond was drained and dried enough to add fill. Not to mention that whoever filled in the pond would be spending a good amount of time in the bottom once it is drained to get a solid base layer to add fill upon. Keep up the good work

    • @grigandy
      @grigandy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's very hard to do this through dense materials, if there is only sand and mud it might work up to a certain depth but if there are concrete blocks or rocks covering the target, they might block the signal completely.

    • @spiritwolf7
      @spiritwolf7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well with dynamite..small charges of course you can go 200 feet down or probably more..is a new radar technique ..but say it's not gonna work is nonsense.. but if a concrete slab is over the whole car they probably not gonna see it..but you never gonna know if you never test it..we can only assume that the car is in there

  • @joydavis9264
    @joydavis9264 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I just looked up how far ground-penetrating radar can detect things and it said around 100 feet deep or so. I looked up the costs. Very expensive. But someone said you can rent it for around $1000 a day. Would be so interesting to mark off a grid over that one that was filled in and survey the whole area where you think a car could go and see if you see anything on GPR.

    I wish you guys could partner up with someone with ground sonar, metal detecting, specializing in dried up water areas with a small backhoe or bobcat! Because bodies of water change over the years, having this type of professional on board could help you with input in so many of the older investigations. I'd think. It comes to mind because my son, though working in accounting, has spent a couple of decades metal detecting around the US and England, finding amazing things everywhere. ( Always been "lucky" at that! LOL)
    Maybe a geological expert as well for cases that are burials. I know this is beyond your scope of expertise, though you do have quite a lot of knowledge on general geology, I was just thinking even if not on you team as working partners just to get the people found. Your driving challenge doing what you do.
    REAL PROFESSIONALS coming in on missing person cold cases, while MOST of us have only local volunteers without the latest equipment or expertise. Thank you guys for what you do. Being a 1958 vehicle the metal will hold up longer as the gauge of steel used was thicker back then. But even at that the vehicle is probably broken down considerably. So looking for the shape alone may not find it. Have you guys considered dragging a unit behind the boat with a metal detector? I metal detect as a hobby and this could be easily done. You need this unit to also be able to adjust depth but still float at the depth you need. Something that big would be very easy to identify.

    After watching the video I was going to make a comment until I found one that was made earlier by Byron Taylor, down below. Given that everyone seems to be drawn to the one pond that had been filled in, hopefully someone can donate their time and ground penetrating radar to go and double check that filled in pond. I would look to local colleges and universities in their archaeological departments. I have found that most colleges and University department professors are more than willing to get approval to go and help in these circumstances as it also benefits the archaeological classes in practical application. Hopefully that could be an avenue to try and see if a closing chapter can finally be written and this couple brought home to their loved ones... As always stay safe, good luck on bringing closure to families, and my place in Lansing, Michigan, is always open to y'all if you're ever up this way.

    This story really hits you in the feels. People are failing to recognize how important and precious giving and receiving Love is anymore. If you find someone that you connect with at the soul and your hearts tells you both it's something special, hold onto it. Love is the only real currency in this life that we take with us when we go to the other side. All the love we give and recieve is offset by the pain we cause others. Once that pain is hopefully subtracted from the Love(hopefully not the other way around) that sum is who we are. It's who we have to love with. There's no reason not to follow your heart. Love who it tells you to and live YOUR life, because nobody else has to. Only you have to love with your decisions and your regrets.
