- John Zarkowski, 72, a Veteran of the Marine Corps who served his country in Vietnam, went missing after he was last seen driving his Chevy Tahoe at 4:30 A.M. September 3rd, 2021.
This missing person documentary brings you alongside Adventures With Purpose's search on September 21st, 2021, following the clues John left behind, leading to the discovery of where John and his SUV had gone missing in the Missouri River 2-weeks earlier, before being found and recovered by AWP.

CASE DETAILS
September 21, 2021, AWP began our search for 72-year-old Veteran John Zarkowski who was last seen on Friday, September 3, 2021, at 4:30 a.m. departing his residence - possibly without his shoes, phone, or wallet.
AWP was in Omaha at 11:45 p.m. getting ready to work a missing person case the next morning when they received a call from Jacob Grubbs after a friend of John's family reached out asking for help from anyone to come in search of John who was believed to have driven his White 2018 Tahoe LTZ into the Missouri River.
We connected the next morning with the lead investigators, Tony Hemmer and Sgt. Doug Durkan from the CASS County Sheriff's Department along with members of John's family.
Around 5:30 p.m. we identified a target in the Missouri River outside of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, and around 7:45 p.m. we confirmed it was John's Chevy Tahoe, 22' underwater.
Returning the next day (September 22, 2021), we struggled as this was one of our most difficult recoveries to date because of the heavy current of the Missouri River.
Early afternoon the Tahoe came out of the Missouri River at 12:59 p.m.
It was confirmed, John Zarkowski was inside the SUV.
A big thank you to the CASS County Sheriff's Office, Plattsmouth Fire Department, dive teams from the Omaha Fire Department along with Yutan Fire and Rescue, the City of Plattsmouth for providing a front loader and operator to clear a path to the work zone, and Neff Towing for volunteering their services.

Thank you for these kind of videos I find the lives so confusing but to watch you do your work in trying to find those missing is so amazing & humbling, You all take so much care in how you treat the missing persons you are looking for and the families who are left behind, I've seen other channels and I can't help but feel cringe when they are jumping up in down with excitement when they find someone because it is such a solemn time in the recovery of the missing, You guys really do take this into consideration the humanity you show is why I keep coming back and support when I can may god bless and keep you safe 💓🇨🇦

This has to be a textbook example of how a detective should behave. What an absolute legend.
Right? You could tell he was a busy guy, but he was putting work in to search for John. I'm just so glad for the family that they were able to find him.
Yes I couldn’t agree more. I think other PDs should use this as an example of these guys should ALWAYS be treated. Bravo to this Police Dept. and Fire Dept. For recognizing that Jared was an expert and followed his lead. It is about time that this happened. I am so happy for Jared and adventures with purpose and well done to all involved.

The detective in this episode was outstanding. He was so supportive and grateful for their help. This is 100% how the rest of them should be modelling their behaviour. Outstanding guy.
Yup didn't get but hurt when a non L.E.O was solving the case ..he was just happy the family got closure
I've noticed that awp is better about allowing them to follow their procedures and protocol. They used to get kinda butthurt when they weren't allowed to be hands on with the recovery after discovery. Now they offer their support and let them do their thing for the most part. This was a very hands on recovery in comparison to the other recent finds.
Literally my first thoughts even before seeing the comments. The. I come to the comments and it’s a shared sentiment. 💯💯💯 detective
“Butthurt “ professionally speaking you mean someone doing all the intense hardest work don’t get full credit and proceed ? A surgeon to perform a life saving surgery and another surgeon pulls him out steps in when the most important meaningful portion is already done ? Basically dismissing their detective work and a full day of physical work . Butthurt 🙄
@@Krae75 that analogy in no way compares to the scenarios they encounter. If you don't see where my message came from then you probably haven't watched all the videos dating back to the start. They have 100% mellowed out when it comes to letting the police do their work after they have reported what they found. They used to get pretty hot headed and very opinionated when they were on the sidelines and couldn't do anything but watch the police and their recovery teams do the work, often because it wasn't the way that they would have done it, not as efficient or something along those lines.
When the officer shook hands and said that the dirt didn’t matter….that was straight up class. He’s a good man.
Yes, when he replied with, "We all get our hands dirty." that just sealed what I had already come to believe this detective is. He's a man that knows that it takes working together as a team and letting each person do what they do best to get the very important job done. He is by far one of the best I've ever seen. My heart actually went out to him a couple of times in the video when he looked like he was thinking that he was in the way or interrupting Jared. He just stopped saying anything and let Jared speak and then humbly and politely said what he needed to say. And each time it wasn't that he really was interrupting Jared, it was that Jared didn't realize that the detective had started saying anything and Jared began speaking to someone on the phone. So this detective was humble and pure like no law enforcement officer I have ever seen. His face and expressions really stuck with me.
I echo both of you thought's , it's really a shame he is the minority in law enforcement these days .
I wish all law enforcement were are good as this Detective........in a sense he has a great " bed side manner" if you will...... Thank you to all that helped with this and every case to bring loved ones answers and the ability to move on.

This is how a true community should look. No one is fighting over who is in charge. Everyone is just working together to bring a community member home to his family. And the detectives being on board with you guy's helping shows true commitment to the community. Way to go team!!! You should all be very proud of what you do!
I am loving this law enforcement officer. Absolutely no ego involved there. He is glad for the help and sees you as the great resource you are. That's how it should be. Kudos to him, we need more like him.
After seeing quite a number of his videos it seems like most officers and sheriffs really do welcome his services, which is nice :)
A lot of Law Enforcement are like this, especially in fields like this. Mainstream news doesn't show this side of cops because it doesn't sell, it's not what their target group viewers want to see. But really, when it comes to saving lives or bringing closure, there is no room for ego. Any officer worth their badge would echo this sentiment.
This officer is awesome! He was there the whole time, supported the family and the divers wherever they went. We need more like him!
I'm as critical as anybody, but these cops were super positive examples of how to work together.
Cass County has very limited resources so they will take what they can get.
The Investigator’s remark that AWP is a great resource is so true and this is one man that is not offended to get any help necessary to find this Veteran and find closure for the family.
I was thinking the same thing, how smoothly the operation plays out if LEO and rescue aren't insulted by "outsiders" coming in to help and, most importantly, giving the family closure.

Yes! I was impressed how respectful and willing the investigators were to allow AWP do the whole thing and be in charge of finding and getting the vehicle out. They didn't let egos get in the way unlike other law enforcement agencies in the past. Everyone worked together as a team. Bless you

I know bringing John home to his family was the most important thing. But hearing the detective say "you're the expert" at 1:01:50 made me pretty emotional. Everything you guys have been through to bring your expertise to those in need of it, just hearing that made me really happy for you guys.
People spend lifetimes trying to be something, and to hear your work being recognized, as small a thing as LEOs calling you expert is, I'm proud to see the growth of AWP!!!

I loved hearing the detective say "you're the expert" wow you guys have come far from people treating you like you were intruding. When the reality is you are the experts having done this in so many different bodies of water. It made me feel proud for you. x
For sure! But I think Jared and Doug have learned how to approach law enforcement better...explaining that once they locate the car, it's the agency who takes the lead but they're there to offer any help. They also have a ton of experience now and can boast that they have over 20 cases solved and assisted with extraction. With Doug as a former tow truck operator himself, that also helps. And of course, any law enforcement officer who googles AWP will have no doubts about their intentions and expertise. This detective was a class-act btw.

I had no trouble accepting help or advice from experienced people. If a plane crashes then I'd do whatever I can to help the experts, the FAA. Unfortunately, our city had trouble with a bunch of firemen who thought they knew everything and started bullying paramedics. They never threatened me (police sgt) because it would not end well.
It was a 2 car crash and FD wanted to "Go Hero" and cut a car apart to "rescue" the female driver. The paramedics arrived but a fireman blocked the ambulance and flipped them "the bird". A paramedic checked the female driver who wasn't hurt bad, so he opened the door and she stepped out. Oh man!!, did the fireman and their supervisors go bezerk with rage!!!! I still remember the Fire Lt, who was 4foot 2 inches, in my face pounding on the city ordinance book screaming for me to arrest the paramedics for "interfering with a fire scene".
Several months later the FD got in a fistfight at another scene with the paramedics. They were disputing something about which IV to use or something, so the FD resorted to fisticuffs to settle their dispute. I know the story sounds crazy but you can't make this stuff up
The FD went thru a period of 5 years where they acted like freakin teenagers with unbalanced hormones. The FD was about 200 to 250 firefighters at the time. They got a wild hair up their butts that they should be the paramedics. Pretty obvious they were not mature enough to trust them with emergency medical decisions. I think the new mayor laid down the law to the punks and some got fired. This was early 90's and to this day the FD are not paramedics.

@@jenniferwallman1033 Same in Iowa. AWP located a young man in my area a coupe yrs ago The local LE were very accommodating and grateful for Jared's help. I think all small town folks are always the best. We take care of ach other. Everyone is family in small town USA :-)

I worked at an insurance company and I had a conversation with a woman whose husband drove into the river he was found after 2 days. It's one of the phone calls I will never forget. I asked my manager to send her flowers because it felt like there was so little I could do. The work you guys do is so important.
I’m a retired LEO, 31 years. Egos often get in the way of proper police work. I tip my hat to Detective Toni Hemmer and Sergeant Doug Durken. Both professional and an asset to their office. They and AWP had a common goal to bring closure to a family and they did just that.

@@TheJoshA They don't always have the resources and when expert volunteers like AWP offer to do the job, you can only agree and thank them really.
@@TheJoshA It takes a lot of specialized equipment, knowledge, and skill. Police departments just don't have those kind of people on staff and they're typically busy with dozens and dozens of other cases.
@@TheJoshA i live in plattsmouth/my grandparents actually developed buccaneer bay community where he lived. Most of our emergency services are volunteer. Literally during flooding, sand bagging the water treatment plant was summer conditioning for the highschool students. Living in smaller communities means dealing the best with what resources you have.
Plattsmouth is one of the best cities ever. My family is from there and we (even though my grandparents moved out to AZ) always took us back for visits. Our extended family is still there. ❤
As retired law enforcement, I thank you for everything you guys do! Having the skill level you guys bring to the table as well as equipment, you’re a godsend for so many of these agencies. They simply don’t have the resources or expertise available to them.

I second that, this production that Jared and his partners have created is excellent. In fact it's hundreds of times better than anything Discovery Channel has ever put out without all the made up drama, double takes and million dollar budgets. Approaching 1.55 millions subs I am sure he has been contacted and if not will be shortly by some of these big networks who will wreck this beautiful channel if it were to ever go that direction.

Came here to say the same thing. Simply beautiful and so much respect. But the production too just speaks honor.
Jared diving blind in such a dangerous current, and even entering the vehicle is dangerous. I give him props for what he does. People need to give him the credit he's due. Also the fact he takes the dangerous dive himself so as not to jeopardize anyone else.
Exactly Jared does that alot to keep his team safe and it shows the kind of person he is and I was scared for him down there on this one it was very dangerous

I gotta say, I love what these guys do. If feels like Jared was put on this earth to do this. His ability to read the sonar, his intuition and diving skills are all incredible. It takes a lot of perseverance to find these lost people. I loose my sh/t after not being able to find my keys when I know they are in the house. These guys are able to stay focused enough to locate lost vehicles w/ very little clues and no definite evidence they are even in the water.
It does concern me when he dives alone. I wish he wouldn’t do that but I doubt he will stop.
@@dwmueller76 yeah, definitely scary for sure! I don't think he had another diver skilled enough to go into that current with him. Why I think the FD dive team provided backup on shore just in case Jared ran into problems as well as learning from him at the same time. He legit was risking his life in that water! People also don't realize, this is something even dive teams don't deal with very often so there is always something to learn. Soon enough Doug will have gained experience to do these dive too though. I just hate it when people say negative things about him, he really doesn't deserve any of it. It's just petty and immature.

22 veterans PER DAY?!! Seriously… that is absolutely heartbreaking. I am from the U.K, so I have little understanding of how your systems work… I’m guessing that there’s a lack of appropriate resources though? Our mental health services have really suffered in recent years, and we are a much smaller island. 😕

The fact these detectives stayed almost the whole time speaks volumes of their character, dedication, & how much they care. Not seen very often in these videos or any other case for that matter. LOVE TO SEE IT !!!!!!

I just watched the video where the county’s sheriff was so arrogant and defensive he cared more about the ruining the landscape then helping to find the car in the water.. he even had to nerve to say to the family that their son was not in the car and probably ran away with his girlfriend... I almost jumped into my screen and punched him in the face! This police department and investigation team was grateful to have AWP resources and it shows. Wonderful
Jared’s determination is unreal! In the dark..He said, “I’m gonna attempt to find this blind!” Doug said, “I want you to be safe”…Jared definitely has a special gift….He said, “I’ll be fine.” What a hero.. I love this team.

Which is why I dont understand why so many people get upset when the public films the Police. Filming the Police gives us a great opportunity to see who the heroes are. Without a doubt the officers in this video were fantastic.
I 100% Agree Mike💙 My husband and I are both retired from the Memphis Police Department. We both worked from uniform patrol to the traffic unit, gang unit, robbery, DUI and inside City Judge’s Chambers. We worked in the worst ghettos of Memphis. Adventures With A Purpose is a GOD SEND in my opinion💙 The Memphis Police Department is such a large department with funds accumulated over several Decades, but AWP is a nonprofit organization not asking for a penny for these small Police & Sheriffs Departments❤️

It's encouraging to see an episode where law enforcement is actually receptive to your presence and appreciative for your help. I understand liability issues they have to consider but when people offer to help for free it's very sad when their efforts are refused or mocked by the locals.
It's inexcusable. Thank your God, and do what needs to be done for ANY KIND of closure for the family. I respect ALL law enforcement, that respects human life...and none, that don't.

My father taught me to scuba dive when I was 10 . It's daunting at first but you get more comfortable the more you do it. However, it's not a great idea to dive at night but he did have a safety line attached to lead him back though.
Regardless, he does an amazing thing for families. I would love to do this.
As a commercial diver/ROV Pilot with roughly 80 hours of training with side scan sonar, I would have completely missed or dismissed that as being a vehicle. These guys are some of the best in the business. Proved their worth 10x over in this video. Great job fellas!!
I was amazed he identified that as an suv, just shows how easily it can be missed when new into the water. I thought it would have stood out more.

@@stevengallant6363 I can't disagree! It seems the areas with their own dive teams have them back off when they find what needs to be found using underwater sonar these areas don't have or use. AWP backs off and let's them move forward but if it wasn't for AWP it wouldn't be solved!!! Thankfully they volunteer their time to help the families

I do not think people, think about the trauma, that police and rescue people get because of their jobs. I am sure there is always that one situation, that is very hard to live with, it takes a very strong person.
Truly sad what happened, but I thank you for helping. John was my neighbor, was rather confused that Saturday when everyone showed up to his house. We tried looking around for a bit, but once I heard all the details of his situation I had a feeling that this was going to be the outcome. Keep doing what you guys do, your work is appreciated by more people than you know.

@@lacey457-z5e As sad as it is to say. Even if he didn't have a vehicle he would have found other ways to go. Having a vehicle was most likely just his first thought. Otherwise he most likely would have used a firearm or other means.

Really ....n I swim in rivers n lakes and any body of water I find up here in PA, my whole life that's what we've always done, this is making me really question all the old cars and old tires n random things we'd see at the bottom of rivers but never thought anything of it!
When that Detective said "You're the expert" at 1:02:00 it proved to me that he was also the expert, a professional Cop: deferring to the better skills & knowledge of the AWP team.

I lost my grandmother this same way. She went out to shop with a friend and either had a stroke or a seizure on the highway and managed to miraculously catch air over a road barrier halting into a pond. It amazes me that no one was around to witness it until 8 years later, during a drought, a motorist spotted her wheel sticking out of the pond and called it in to the police. It’s still a trip to me how it happened

For the detective in this case, I can not thank you enough for having a welcoming thankful attitude toward what these guys do. That appears to be how most of their interaction with Law Enforcement goes, but not always and it is very frustrating when they are treaded badly by law enforcement. Any agencies who have been helped by AWP and appreciate their help I ask on my own behalf that you reach out to departments who have treated them badly and give them a good talking to.
My grandmother passed away close to 30 years ago from congestive heart disease. She had been having chest pains for weeks prior, but didn't tell anyone because she didn't want to be a burden on the family. She was only a few weeks shy of her 80th birthday. Hearing this man's story brought that back to me. No one should feel like they are a burden on their family. We should all love our families unconditionally and make sure they know we are there for them through the good as well as the bad.
My father passed the same way at 56, 6 years ago. He told one of his buddies his chest had been hurting for a week or so but not any of us cause he didn't want to worry the family... Buddy tried to get him to go to the hospital but he wasn't having it. Hard headed bastard, still miss that wild man dearly. RIP to all those lost.
My mother told me that i'm burden to her.She also told if i die is better than takes care of me if i sick.At the same time,i hide from them that i have chronic disease and heard from my own mom told me like that while i struggle with my life without told them about my struggle fighting with disease myself.Sometime i think to die because i'm useless burden to them if they noticed about my disease.Life is tough guys but i'm weak.Maybe my advice before my dead be kind to other especially to your family and be a good mom and dad to your sons.Don't choose only the selected son you want to love and care about and neglecting other.

My father-in-law ended his life when his wife was in hospice. He was found after 3 months thanks to people like you. I know how much this meant to my hubby. This is huge.

Love this detective! He seems to actually care about his job and his cases! This is the first time I've seen a detective show up like this and do what he can to help and actually appreciate what AWP does!
How every detective/sheriff should treat these guys ....not like they are some shady group charging the family's money for the search giving false hope ...they have found a way to have it 100% free to the families and the videos are motivating other groups to start... nothing but good is happening .

My husband is a survivor of a horrific time in Vietnam. Never told anyone, including me, for fifty years! I have been in shock the last couple of years. I wish he could have shared this...
Due to President Trump and his dillagence for our Veterans, he finally shared it with a doctor there and then told me. Once he got this out... he's so different. He's always loved his family and the Lord but it's a way different face of something of him being at peace.

The fact he felt so ill that he thought death was a better option just hits different with me, as someone who struggles with chronic and sever pain to the point im on high dose opiates, the thought enters your mind, especially when you know there are fates worse than death. Im glad the family found out the truth and was able to bring him home. At least he no longer suffers and is watching over his family. R.I.P in paradise.

Chronic pain is awful. One of the things I try to remember in the worst moments is “Suicide does not end pain. It transfers the pain to the people who love you.”

Especially when the meds stop working and people have no access to a good pain doctor who can set the medication regime right. It's so sad to think that money can be a reason for someone suffering more than what the current state of knowledge allows :(
Thank you, guys, for all you do. My husband is a disabled veteran, and we've lost too many of our brothers and sisters in arms to the cruelty of depression and PTSD. Thank you for helping to bring some kind of closure to the family, and for spreading awareness about the fragility of those who have served our country. These men and women stepped up to the plate and made the choice to sacrifice everything for the sake of our freedom. Whether you agree with the political leaders of this country, or any other country, is irrelevant. They choose to serve US, as in you and me, to protect the Constitution and the rights therein. It's so sad to me how easily they are tossed aside when their contract is up. My husband has had the hardest time just getting an appointment with a dentist this week, it's even harder for him to see his psychologist for therapy, or his psychiatrist to discuss meds. It's a shame, and it breaks my heart.

Tried to go see a doctor about my brain and see why I have never had a good memory but they told me it would be 4-6 weeks before I would get a 2nd appointment that was over 6 months ago. Ive just gave up hope with that.

Brandi~ their demeanors- actions and complete lack of empathy to a family that lost their son was completely appalling~ including the divers that showed up as well- not showing respect or comradeship to those that were there voluntarily was equally as appalling~ especially when it was such a heartbreaking tragedy~♡~

Thank you for this video. I'm married to a Vietnam veteran and my BIL, another veteran, did commit suicide. Sometimes, for whatever reason, it doesn't matter what we do for them when they come back from a combat situation, they cannot shake the demons that haunt them. What I do appreciate is the fact that you guys didn't give up, you found John and his friends and family have closure. You guys are awesome.

Absolutely right. Greatest respect for law enforcement here. I know the teams have had problems with a few departments but that seems to be a very small number now that AWP is more and more recognized and the local police have come to understand exactly what these teams are doing. There will always be a few who will be less than cooperative and stepping on their own egos but Jared handles them all with the utmost respect and professionalism. I watch not only AWP but the other teams as well and I have not once seen any of these guys ever act less than professional with law enforcement. Word is getting around what these teams do and what a wonderful resource they are. Some police departments don't have dive teams or if they do, they don't have the state of the art sonar equipment that these divers have so they're limited in their capability to investigate. And I also have a feeling that some of the families have made it quite clear on what They want done. Overall, it just makes me so happy to see the locals come out to help any way they can. What the guys are doing is bringing folks together. People put aside all the turmoil and hard times everyone is going through right now and come together as a community to help someone else. That used to be a given in this country. Unfortunately, we've seen that quality in Americans go by the wayside the last few years and we've become angry, tired of the uncertainty and fearful of what's to come. But what we are seeing now, thanks to these divers, is people coming back together to help. Helping others is the best way to get you through the hard times. So kudos to every single person who turns up to help and to all those that donate to keep these heroes on the road. If ever this country needed a come to Jesus moment, it's now.

For someone to be so desperate to stop their suffering, that they choose to end their life in this manner, is especially heartbreaking. I can’t even imagine. I pray God took his hand quickly.

to die alone and this way is heartbreaking. what these victims don't understand is the heartbreak they cause of not knowing. obviously he was too distraught to think that part through. and Im sure his family wanted to care for him. thank you for all you do to help families

being a combat vet myself I just want to say I appreciate how well you explain the fact at 30:50 into this video that when we come back home this is not our reality this is not how we view the world this is not what we were expecting... it's just different and it's so hard to explain.... to make the adjustment to go back to civilian life style after spending a couple of your years in really messed up situations .... how to deal with people who think everyone owes them something for some reason or another ....it's just a very difficult adjustment..... And some people can never make that adjustment no matter how hard they try.... I'm not asking for any pity for any of my brothers and sisters just a little understanding .... most people would freak being shot at one time in their life let alone seeing them lose their family members on a weekly basis ... I just ask if you see someone in need please reach out to them...you could change their world

I’m not American, I’m English. My son is just about to join the Australian airforce, because he’s jet crazy. My ex husband (my sons father) was a fusilier in the Royal Army. I have sadness that people have to be reminded that you all FOUGHT for your country. That combat is horrifying, and leaves deep rooted scars that can’t be fathomed by civilians. Thank you so much.
