- Generally considered dogdom's finest all-purpose workers, German Shepherd Dogs are large, agile, muscular dogs of noble spirit and high intelligence. For such deep-chested, solid dogs, they move quickly with great nimbleness afoot. The German Shepherd's natural gait is a free-and-easy trot, but when duty calls they can turn it up a notch or two and reach great speeds. Standing as high as 26 inches at the shoulder and built like a brick doghouse, the German Shepherd Dog when viewed in outline presents a picture of smooth, graceful curves rather than angles.

I really like this breed, in fact I have one.They will never top the border collie in my mind and heart but they are number two. Plus the GSD was obtained for the purpose of personal protection and border Collies don't serve that purpose.
Too bad about some of the show lines having bad hips and those ridiculously low back ends. Sonehow, I don't think that's what Max v. Stephanitz had in mind when he came up with thd idea fof this breed. Still, #furmissile for the win! #borkborknomnom :)

Teresa I have a German Shepherd puppy. He is just over 4 month old and loves to eat grass and mud. I tell him no. How can I stop him doing his? He gets treats, plenty of walks, but the grass and mud drives him nuts.
Michelle Henderson mine used to eat rocks and twigs when we went for a walk I gave him a stick to hold in his mouth while we were walking to distract him. Try distracting him with toys and playing fetch. He might find it more interesting.
@@redeemedandreadytofly1423 He is now 7 months old and the stones are forgotten. However, he still loves to eat freshly mown lawn grass. He is a real character. He acts totally differently between me and my husband. My husband takes him for a walk, ,meets other dogs and sits and wait for them to pass then carries on. With me on a walk meeting other dogs, he wants to at least nibble them all. I think, that he thinks he is protecting me, the weaker one. He knows nothing. Weaker ? think not pup.
Michelle Henderson he is protecting you but he still has to behave on the leash. They try to get away with it depending who is walking them. My dog walks well with me but drags my husband because my husband has always let him do it. However, now he has trained him off leash. (We have 5 acres and we don’t take him on the road at all. ) if he sees a deer, all training goes out the window!!! Haha.
@@redeemedandreadytofly1423 We are getting there. Today there was balloons and he popped two and didn't like it. He figured if he picked them up by the 'stalks' they were fine. No more popping. How clever is he.

Also, they live to talk and whine like a husky. The one I had always had a lot to say when I got home. Like, where have you been and why have you been gone for so long. I love them as much as I do huskies.

Not sure, but if you have the $$$ to import an accredited and certified one from Europe, sure. Most of the working lines are from the Czech Republic nowadays, I believe.

If you live alone I suggest you not to keep any dog. I am not doubting you but for the sake the dog you shouldn't keep any. They need a companion always, and loneliness may tend to temperament, behavioural, socialization, and health issues.
Better bring them in pair, keep them with your parents/family till they mature, crate train them and then you can keep them with you.

My gsd is the best . So loving but no good with other dogs. Tried neuturing and lots of training. A big teddy bear with the family but needs to be muzzled with other dogs.he is my best friend and irreplaceable
Is it my imagination, or does that Shepherd in the video doing the retrieves have problem hips? It seems to slope downward more than some.

Leslie Rawe, He has no hip problem. It is called angulation and some breeders prefer that look over the straight back look. Had he had a hip problem he would not have been able to run as he did in the video.
@@roberta.lofgrenjr.9182 thanks, I didn't know there were different "looks" or body types breeders were developing. I imagine the sloped back and increased hip angle could add to the hip problems many dogs get with poorly chosen breeding.
Leslie Rawe, Hi Leslie, my sister bought a shepherd 13 years ago from a breeder who only has the angulated shepherds. We went to see the dog before she purchased him and this breeder had about 40 adult Shepherds on her property with many cage kennels. One of the questions I had asked her was about the sloped back and she told me she enters her dog's in a lot of show competitions and she claimed they perform better being angulated. I have read before about angulated Shepherds and many articles have said that type can have hip problems. She bought Montana the puppy at 9 weeks old and we had a female trainer come to the house to train him. When she came and saw Montana with the angulated back she said get that dog to a vet right away and would not train him. She was concerned about that slope. Make a long story short, Montana lived a long healthy spoiled rotten life. He lived for 12 years which is good for a Shepherd. We loved him and miss him dearly. Good day Leslie,
Leslie Rawe, I forgot to tell you Montana did not have any problems with his hips until he aged at 12 years old. Most Shepherds will get it at an old age along with many other large dog's.

Need lots of your time . For training and walking . Need a really good walk every day. Also shed a lot . Need pet insurance and good food . A big commitment . I have a gsd now that my kids are older. U need to be really sure and have support from other people if u need to leave the dog for long periods or holidays. My gsd does not like being alone for long. He is a lot of work but he is worth it . My best friend ever
Sharon Hendry, Hi Sharon, I just read your comment at 1:45 AM in the morning about your German Shepherd. My family has had nothing but German Shepherds all our lives and they are a superb breed. As I started to read your post about he needs a lot of your time for training and walking and as I continued to read the post I was saying to myself...…. is she going to say the dog is not worth it? When I got to the end of your post I read he is a lot of work but he is worth it. Very happy to hear that. Yes they are definitely worth it. And you get it back from them by their love and loyalty.

Wait til you have a King Shepherd! Outrageously gorgeous, smart, playful, affectionate, protective. You’ll definitely want at least 2! I am so in love with them. I’ve had 3. They do shed a lot though so you’ll need a strong vac like a Dyson!

Furmenater ( a amazing dog brush )
Water bowl
Food bowl
A Extra Large dog bed
Dog treats
A leash ( or a vibrating collar)
Time
Love
Training
And PATIENCE they do learn quite quickly though
( I know I didn’t say everything guys)
And also there are the working breed and show lines. I highly recommend the working breed as the show lines are usually Roach backs and can lead to bad joints when the dog gets into further years. But they are great dogs. Very loyal, nice and protective. They are great family dogs. Good with kids for sure!

the straight back is natural and healthy, all others are at risk on hip displacement . My opinion.
Oskar Haas, Not true. Eventually all big dogs end up with hip problems when they get old. Straight back verses angulation back is a breeders choice.
