You are a wonderful woman to teach pronunciation sounds. Being a non-native it was a difficult task to pronounce the English sounds but you helped me to understand a lot. I'm not perfect even now in pronunciation but I got confidence that I could improve a lot and I hope gradually even I could pronounce like a native speaker. Thanks from the bottom of my heart.

I reckon world is the most difficult word for non natives to pronounce. I listen to lots of BBC podcasts and often they have guest from other countries, and although most of them have an advanced level of English, they still struggle with 'world'.
Thank you for another great lesson!

I really liked. I'm a Brazilian and I have learned English my entire life in the American accent way. Never could I find content demonstrating how it'd be in British English and that's what I'm after. It's quite weird to understand American English almost perfectly and have difficulties in international tests because most of them are done in British (if not the entire test, great part of it). Thanks

Hi Emma! I really admire your work here on TH-cam, I can see you're so dedicated to it and I hope you'll get all the love you derserve for your work! :) When I need to brush up on my English pronunciation (I'm italian), I always watch your videos, they're so clear and well made!
I wonder if you could make a video in which you explain the schwa sound..... I still have some trouble with it... And to me it sounds very alike to this one /ɜː/.... Yes, I'm a bit confused... Anyway, thank you for your amazing videos, keep it up, you're really great (as a person and as a teacher). Big hug from Italy :)

OMG Having lived in London 6 years, I know the struggle with this sound is real for non-native speakers... we don´t have that sound in our language which makes it f*** complicated. Great video, I never got it explained this way, I wish there was TH-cam back in 2006 when I moved to London and started studying my uni degree, this would have saved my life in many presentations talking in front of native speakers that sometimes looked at me like :O what the hell is she saying? :D LOL

That was a really useful video, Thank you so much, Emma. I should admit that the last sentence was a bit tricky, so I pronounced it thrice to produce the same sound as yours. I suppose the difficulty in English is that word spelling is not always the same as its pronunciation. Luckily, I've recently started learning some pronunciation tricks and tips in addition to dedicating some time to listen to English podcasts daily to tune my ears. Gladly, I can see some progress in my listening comprehension. Thanks again!

hey Emma, a question i just thought of: when it comes to pronunciation, is the majority of the focus in the lips or in the jaw? does that make sense? i.e. are the lips the focal point of pronunciation? or does it start in the jaw positioning? or, perhaps, is it a combination of the two?

    • @Pronunciationwithemma

Why is it that the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) doesn't know /ɜː/ but uses /əː/ instead? I have just started learning IPA for university and I am really confused. Are both /ɜː/ and /əː/ correct or is one of them false (which one)? Or does it just depend on the dictionary? It would be really nice if you could help me. :)
