- The 2024 Toyota GR86 introduces a Performance Pack that includes Brembo brakes and Sachs dampers, and all 2024 GR86s now have adaptive cruise control. I spend a week with this PP-equipped GR86 to see how the changes affect the car. Does the Performance Pack interest you? Thanks to Toyota for providing this vehicle to review!

$1500-2k for that brembos and dampers package is a hell of a deal. You’d probably be paying that, if not more, for the brakes alone in the aftermarket.
Front and rear brembos 4.5 k euros
People complain about not having lane keeping assist. Do they really not realize how annoying that stuff is?
People forgot how to drive.
This is the car that started this TH-cam journey for you ! You should get one Matt
It would be one of my top picks if I needed to buy another car!
One of the best drivers cars ever made for any money. Period. Even Chris Harris called it a bargain everymans 911 GT3
Just so slow for the money.
@@jake2772 For the money? Mine is stock and I've beaten a VA WRX STI and 350z. What more do you want from a $30k car???
@@jake2772 compared to what? Let's see what kind of brain you have
@@moldyrefrigerator I have a few bolt ons and ran dead even with a focus RS rolling start. People thinking this car is so slow is astounding. Then again, you have to know how to drive, you can lose to a mini van if you don’t launch the car in its power band or don’t know how to shift
@@subiesnacks8446 u must own one. Compared to a Ferrari obviously.
I'm happy my 22 base has none of the safety features in it. Just a raw experience without any unnecessary add-ons.
Nice quick drive/review. Looking forward to the Ecoboost Mustang comparison 👍🏼
Too bad you only get the options on the GR that Toyota gives you with the allocation process. Can’t order and pick your pleasure. Had my 2024 premium MT in Pavement for two weeks and loving it. I was hoping that I could get the performance pack, but you take what you can get. Rowing the gears!!!!!
Big fan of GR86 💪🏽👍🏽
I so want this car! Affordable and connects you to the road. I love cornering and handling. Must have!
What's crazy is im getting 19mpg combined in my 10 speed mustang gt
I also have a 19 10r80. Not sure what you expected for mpg 😆
Hell of a car 🙌🏼💪🏼 love that blue color!
Oddly enough these are more expensive to insure than one would think!
Just received my 24 GR86 Premium. I'm really enjoying it and the linear power curve is very predictable in the twisties. Going for a track day soon!
It makes me giggle!!
Do not forget to change oil after track day! Exterm important. And boxer engine, so it will use some oil ,as athe Porsche :) it is not problem.Brilliant car.
1:05 lovely doggo!
9:17 - ...why Subaru charges more than Toyota (in US)?... Here in Canada, I just purchased BRZ tS and save $7K vs. Trueno... My question is, why Toyota charges so, so much more in Canada... Plus, I got my BRZ tS in 3 months vs. 12+ months waiting time for GR!!!
Because the trueno version has heritage. The subarus are just made so subaru makes a little money on toyota's idea. I'm glad subaru has more cars out there, makes mine more rare and valuable.
@@subiesnacks8446 As same as you, like and wanted GR86 Trueno... however, for $7K less I chose absolutely the same car with Subaru badges... + I'm using that money to upgrade the car.
@@CPE-j1uespecially if your gunna mod the car. Basically replacing the stuff the manufacturer replaced and charged you for. No need for the double charge. If your on the west coast of Canada, maybe our paths will cross someday at a meet. Enjoy the car man
You should buy it Matt
Looks like a hoot to drive!
I think the best pick is a base manual 86 or BRZ. You can the fun slides or upgrade it yourself, it’s a blank canvas so you might as well start with a cheaper entry price.
Great review Matt, i love these cars also. Wish i could have one for weekends. A quick easy solution for annoying dash lights is a piece of black electrical tape placed over the offending light 😅
I have to say, I'm a huge fan of the color. Even the fake intake noises are sounding pretty decent these days. What a great platform this ended up being.
I agree!
Does anyone else get a late-90's Eclipse Spyder vibe from this car? Really digging it!
I have one of these. The EyeSight system is pretty annoying to me. I often have to move slightly out of lanes around here due to construction or cyclists or whatever and it's annoying to have it chime all the time so I disabled it. I wish I could permanently disable the pre-collision braking too as it randomly likes to beep and brake a bit if someone is slowly leaving the lane or if there is a roundabout or bushes that go out into the road somewhat. Hopefully they add an update to permanently disable these without the bright warning lights in the dash. They also need to add a software option to adjust or turn off the fake engine sound. But the way it drives is fantastic. I like it more than my old 2017 BRZ with the Performance Pack.
Jus unplug it and fake engine noise goes away should be under glove box did it in type r and lots of cars with it
@@jdmteggy2388 I did unplug the active sound control but I just meant it should have been an option for the owners and they should be able to adjust the volume and tone of that fake engine noise but we can't. It has it's own large box and processor and speaker just to only be able to make one tone at one volume!? Absolute fail.
In five months of owning a BRZ with eye sight I’ve had the autonomous braking kick in once and it saved a collision … maybe you’re driving a bit too aggressively. You can turn down the volume of the lane keep and it’s a useful safety feature. The rear cross traffic alert is also great when backing out from behind SUV’s. Enjoy your car!
@@J_S209 I've never had it aggressively brake yet but it does the pre-braking thing and beeps almost every time I drive. Usually because somebody is slowing down because they are about to turn in front of me. I know they are about to turn and have plenty of room and am either going to go around them or they will turn. Also I've had it get confused at roundabouts and with sharper turns. Is it possible that in some strange situation it could save me? Maybe. But I've been driving for over 20 years and have never ran into anyone and don't plan to. I think it's more likely to improperly brake when I don't want it to which could cause an accident. Again, I just wish they would have allowed us to keep it permanently off and with no bright orange off dash warning light. This is supposed to be a drivers car with a manual transmission and traditional neutral steering dynamics - I would rather it not tell me what to do and make me second guess my driving.
@@Bristecom I think a lot of the reasoning for the safety equipment is workplace safety legislation and insurance requirements. For example, why does the Toyota Hilux have all the safety gear on them now …. because they are a work vehicle.
Most of “us” are drivers and not “motorists” … I can probably drive just fine without the tech … but it is nice to have to protect “us” from “them”. 👍 Enjoy your car.
I think that sapphire blue is the best color for the GR86 and BRZ.
In a perfect world:
TURBO CONVERTIBLE
Who buys an auto ...
21 mpg when lead footing around town is excellent.
Didn't even think about the gr86/brz and ecoboost mustang being competitors. Should be interesting
If these are considered competitors, let's throw in some BMW i220 (or whatever lowest trim you get in the states) into the mix.
what a cute little car
You can't order these. You have to check online for inventory updates and call every dealership for months on end. The nearest dealership to me that has one on order is marked up $4,000. At that point you'd just get the car without and spend $2,500 on a BBK. The only thing the performance package will do is make it easier to negotiate with delusional dealerships to help get the standard car for $1000-$1500 off their inflated sticker with their bullshit add-ons.
I'd be afraid to take this thing to the autox hearing how the engine will even blow up at events like this ....let alone HPDE
It took about 20 minutes, but I popped out my cluster the clear lens over it pops right off too, and I put a little piece of electrical tape over the departure lane icon, and while I was there, covered the green hill assist icon (manual) just because, WORTH IT. the tape literally blends in with the black, dont even know its there. that was a big gripe with me, I hated the departure warning, but I hated the icon too.
Great idea!
@@MattMaranMotoring thanks! Yeah, now my cluster has no bs lights and it’s great. Been averaging 28mpg too. Pretty happy, fun daily
Nice video Matt. It's surprising the GR86 PP is so much less than the tS. I'm going to creep over to the Toyota dealer and see if I can score Brembos on the cheap for my BRZ 🤙
I have 19' BRZ with PP and prefer this set up over the special editions. Dealerships love to mark them up anyways. Not sure about the tS side of things, but does the 2nd gen tS and Trueno edition get the flexible draw stiffners and goodies like that yet? If not, getting PP for these cars are a nice addition for sure.
Never felt the need to replace the SACHS shocks or go aftermarket. I do plan to go K&Ws when they are done.
Brakes, the brake calipers are nice and all, but that was just about the only thing I've kept. I replaced the rotors with larger ones, went with more aggressive brake pad and stainless steel lines, and flushed & replaced with the Motul 600 fluid. Massive difference, and the Brembo calipers look perfect with the larger rotor & stock wheels. When I drove non PP BRZs, I've felt the difference between stock and brembo brakes, but not as much as I hoped.
So if somebody really wants to feel a difference, invest more into the brake system, at least for the 1st gen for sure. Given the development history with the 2nd gen and how they are carrying themselves, I am assuming the 2nd gen's PP packaging is the same, maybe a bit more aggressive brake pads?
Love this car
I've always wanted an 86 in manual. Currently in a 20 mustang gt auto. Hate the auto. First of 5 cars.
You should review the 2024 Hyundai ELANTRA N-line. It looks pretty cool since they changed the front end.
I’d like to if Hyundai puts one in my press fleet!
The full N is way better than just the N line.

It sounds like the fake engine noise module is still hooked up or activated. That is the sound you are most likely hearing. I unplugged mine, you still can hear the intake sound a little bit though, might be because I have the GR performance air filter though.
Great for back roads and auto X, but terrible on track*. I hope Subaru addressed the RTV issue.
*without reliability mods
I want one
Wonder why they chose the Brembo brakes over the gr brakes?
MX5 is the answer. The 1990s plastic explosion interior , is ….. 90s
What's with this fish-eye effect in most modern cameras? I used to loathe the way the new 86 looks based on TH-cam videos, but when I saw one in real life, it looked good, it doesn't look this droopy.
A couple of Toyota dealers didn't seem to know that you could get the perf package as a dealer installed retrofit?
Great job Matt. Given the price point would like to hear your thoughts on handling and braking comparisons with the Elantra N. Or is it apples to oranges being RWD vs FWD?
Is there still an rtv issue?
Ofc they’re all in the pickup tube..
Except it doesn’t really cause any issues. Oil starvation, however is a very real and documented issue with these cars, with some very simple mitigation- overfilling by around 1 1/4 quart of oil, along with the oil being 5w 30
Is performance pack available yet as an up for previous year models??? I don think it’s availabilie
GR86 gang rise up. Pooorrsche 😂
Working OT never looked so enticing.
Anyone able to buy these seperately off toyota parts yet?
This is one great video. thank you for making it.
Thanks for watching it!
How is anyone able to buy one. I haven’t found one yet
Can you tell a difference in throttle mapping between the Subaru and Toyota? Is the Subaru more linear? Is the Toyota more “on off”? Thanks, great review as always.
I have a GR, ad my son has a BRZ. having driven both, I can tell you that the BRZ is definitely more linear. The 86 gives you the perception that it Pulls stronger. I don’t believe one is faster than the other. It’s just a little trickery on the part of Toyota. I’m not sure how I feel about it honestly, as I’m the one that owns the GR86. In someways, I like that it feels so eager to pull, but it can also make starting out a little trickier sometimes. And it’s all just a little sleight of hand, Toyota has 80% percent of the throttle in the first 30% of the pedal. as you get further into the pedal, there is very little more there.. we live in different states, and I flew up there and did not have my car. So not being able to drive them back to back makes it harder to 100% say which one you like better
With more power
Go ahead and refinance the house for one of these. Haha, great video --can't wait to see the next comparison video!
Is it possible to get Aluminum knuckles on a BRZ with PP? I hear they flip them to Toyota steel ones if you option for the BRZ pp package.
You can't. Get base or limited BRZ and install BM4 calipers.
At 3:15, what road are you on ?
Great review on the updates! Good job, Matt.
Tell me about that B roll dog though

Performance package on an 86 is an oxymoron. Needs an engine swap
That fuel efficiency is bad for such a small engine, but I Love the car. Considering the cost, would you go with WRX (assuming a slight discount) or GR86?
I agree with FDT.
I was getting average 30 MPG with cruising and traffic from VA to NY (300 mile trip). It’s bad around town where I’d get 22 MPG with more city type driving.
The auto is far more efficient on fuel. Remember it is a big engine and it’s putting out 170ish kw with quite high compression, it’s tuned for go (6 ish second 400 metre times) not economy.
Wish they used the WRX drivetrain in it.
Is NVH in this better than the new WRX?
I'd say they're fairly similar but the WRX might be slightly quieter.
I'm no expert, but the maths of "short gearing = inferior fuel economy" don't add up. Isn't fuel economy about the RPM (given two identical engines)? Higher RPM typically is more fuel burning, and with shorter gearing, while in the same gear at the same speed, one would be at higher RPM. But the beauty of gears is you can upshift and you'll drop RPMs. What am I missing here? Unless we're talking about economy strictly in the top gear where you can't upshift any further?
Yes, in most cases that is how it works. Unless I'm missing something this jives with the low fuel economy findings he mentioned...
If you look at Subaru engines across the board-- they are far from being fuel efficient. They would benefit the most if they added a hybrid system to their engines.
Couldn't agree more there. For a company that touts sustainability and environmental friendliness they sure have some inefficient vehicles...Marketing at its finest.
I’m with Matt on short gearing, close ratios. Current manual Porsches and even the current Mustang have had their performance hobbled by long gear ratios aimed more at fuel economy and emissions than performance. It great that the 86/BRZ and Miata still have nice tight short ratios….but to Matt’s point, it doesn’t help the 86/BRZ’s fuel economy.
You basically answered your own question in the last statement. Short gears means even in 6th rpms remain high at cruising speed, and that leads to higher fuel burn...In the city it's actually pretty expected for a NA 2.4L, I get bout 22mpg real world... In highway, is where the short gearing really hurts and I only get 29mpg (going about 80mph and crusing rpm around 3200) .
