  • Introduction to a 2-3-1 formation for youth soccer 7v7 games (U.S. Soccer U9 and U10 age divisions). This video is intended to help coaches, parents, and players start to understand the basic strategies of the game. Coaches can ask their players how to "make good shapes" and "move together" throughout the season to help players develop a better understanding of their position and movement.

    This is a great video. Everyone talks about making sure you have your triangles but very few discuss or mention Diamonds. What a great teaching method to understand without any talking! Very impressed.

      I like 3- 3 what do you think?

      For a younger and less experienced team, 3-3 is a good introductory formation. But I would encourage transitioning to a 2-3-1 or similar formation over time because it teaches players to be more dynamic in how they move off the ball to support each other. You may find that some players in a 3-3 will tend to stand in a flat line or wait around for the ball to come to them instead of moving into open space to make a good shape.

    Great insight. I use 2-1-2-1 formation instead of 2-3-1 purely because it depends what type of Central midfielder you have. If its CDM then i play with 2-1-2-1 but if its box to box midfielder then its 2-3-1. So we used 2-1-2-1 and realised we naturally form defense triangles, attack diamond, and sweeper circle based on our average positions. We played some good football and intricate passes. So 2-3-1 / 2-1-2-1 only works well when you have 2 ball playing centre backs.

    For my team I use a 3 2 1 formation with overlapping fullbacks (wingbacks) This is mainly because I have insanely fast and fit players that hardly ever get caught on the break and forwards that love to drive at players and are unbelievable at 1v1s. So in attack it goes to 1 2 3, sweeper, two midfielders, two wide players and one striker. I tried a 2 3 1 but i noticed that it slowed our game down, my tactics are to break lines as quickly as possible and overload. I'd say we're more of a good passing team that are constantly looking to counter as quick as possible.

    • @soccerdots
      @soccerdots  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Depending on my players and the team we're playing against, I'll often switch to a 3-2-1 formation as well. For example, if the other team is keeping three forwards up waiting for a long-ball to counter-attack, I may build from a 3-2-1 to ensure we have a strong defensive line. But as you say, the key is teaching your wingbacks to join the attack and make those wide runs into open space once we win the ball. If we all move up together and make good shapes, we can often out-number and out-play the other team.

    Using this with U-10 boys rec soccer. Hammering home for center mids NOT to chase the ball but hold their position. And fall into that defensive triangle instead of becoming a second striker.

    I recommend getting one centre back to run forward as a secondary midfielder if your team is dominating. Make sure he has a good level of fitness as he’ll need to be box to box. Also recommend having your front 4 run freely in attack to confuse man marking teams.

    • @soccerdots

      Fluid and creative movement is great. Ultimately, I try to encourage players to always be making good shapes (triangles, diamonds, squares) and stay connected as they move up and down the field. The reality will likely look very different than the shapes and movements shown here, but for new 7v7 players I like to use this video to introduce the basic ideas of dynamic movement and good shapes.

    Great video! How does the Attack Diamond work with the offside line in 7v7? Would the right point of the diamond be offside most of the time?

    • @soccerdots
      @soccerdots  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The center forward (right side of diamond) can look to stretch the field toward the offside line, but don't go past it. If the outside midfielders find that they're always standing flat with the center forward near the offside line, it may mean they need to drop back to provide a better angle for receiving the ball (creating the diamond). However, when you are in the attacking third, maintaining a specific shape is less important than creating shooting opportunities on goal.

    this is a great videos but how can i put to pratice in a 10 year old squad?

    • @soccerdots
      @soccerdots  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I often use this and other videos as discussion points before or during a scrimmage or game. For example, to the defenders I'll ask can we support the attack? How can we support the attack? If one defender moves up to support the attack, where should the other defender move? And if the players watch the video, they pick up the ideas a lot quicker. Another example, when players start crowding or drifting out of position, my most common talking point is, can we make better shapes? A small dry erase board helps to show them what the current shapes look like, and then ask a player how to fix the shapes. I also try to keep all these discussions short, one or two minutes, and then let them get back to playing.

    How about 3-2-1 ?

    • @soccerdots
      @soccerdots  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes I ask my center midfielder to play more defensively, which in effect becomes more like a 3-2-1. Not sure I have enough to add that would make it a unique video, but I'll think about it - thanks!
