Bandtails are hard to kill. They are usually super wary and fly way up to the top of a big pine where they either watch you walk by or flush wild. Mountain quail will hold super tight if they haven't been hunted. If they have been hunted, they will often times flush the second you come over the rise.
You're right Paul I was up at Green valley lake by Big Bear and saw a nice cubby of mountain quail I just don't know what the boundaries are up there and if and where I can hunt???
I hunted mountain quail here in San Diego in the 1970s, 1980s in the mountainous chaparral. But you need a good dog because they mostly run away from you before you even see them!!!
Glad I don’t have to travel up to the Oregon border, just to get mountain quail. I’ve been getting them locally here in the San Bernardino county mountains as well as the Kern county mountains of SoCal, just above LA county for over 30 years now. Band-Tailed pigeon are throughout the Angeles National Forrest in LA county too. So many people don’t realize that there’s great upland game hunting within Los Angeles county. On a side note, so many people in SoCal believes that one must drive for hours to get to valley quail, cottontail and band-tails. But you don’t.
Mark, I know you're younger than I but your Dad should have imparted some wisdom onto you. When you come across quail, numbers are critical to their survival. When you've taken one or two birds from a covey, you need to move on. Mountain quail "should" hold but it appears these birds have been pressured - *yet another indicator. Guides need to present birds to keep their job however they can also literally devastate species, for this same reason. The more I see bird guides and guided bird hunters, the less I like what I see. Back in the late 1990s Huns in Saskatchewan were so plentiful you could limit out in 45 minutes - IF you were so kill crazy. We believed they would be in numbers FOREVER! In the early 2000s there was a SIGNIFICANT (weather related) drop in numbers yet hunters kept pressuring those remaining birds. Hun numbers have come back for the most-part but it took twice as long as it should have because of inconsiderate hunters. To think mountain quail will ALWAYS be where they are, in the current numbers, is a mistake of HUGE proportions, regardless of what your guide (who is dependent on remuneration) tells you. Hunting them is fine but only by smart hunters. Back to Saskatchewan, the guided waterfowlers could only hunt until noon. So, the guides got smart and added afternoon upland hunting to their offering. That changed upland hunting in the notorious waterfowl regions of SK forever. I personally witnessed waterfowlers with their 12 gauge semis being driven up and down wheat fields along caragana windrows shooting Huns right out of the back of the open truck box! I returned days later to find truck tracks and empty hulls all over the place BUT it gets better. My dog went on point! I walked in to flush and a single Hun flipped and flopped along the ground with a broken wing, unable to fly away. It wasn't the only cripple we found. I would outlaw semis for ALL upland hunting. They are completely unnecessary AND speak to a "different kind of upland hunter". *Ground sluicing quail is just...sad. Didn't see much of your Britt in this video. ??
For many of their shots they don't seem to be swinging on flying quail, suggesting that they're ground swatting birds. Mountain quail are admittedly hard to hunt, but some people look down on ground swatting.
Band Tailed Pigeons = birds of opportunity? Disrespectful to a game species with a dwindling population that needs attention and recourses. And its only open for like 9 days a year in each unit so I don't know how you can call it a bird of opportunity. Band tail Pigeon = greater then any stupid non native released farm birds you hype up as game on this show.
You sound like a real fun guy? I bet your great at clearing a room at parties? You don’t have to be such a douche bag every day of your life. Get well soon!
Something on my bucket list for sure.

Beautiful video man good luck this year.
We have mountain quail in Southern California mountains also. But they seem to be a little bit bigger down here for some reason.
