In my review I called the new 2022 Apple Watch SE 2 the best value starter Apple Watch out right now, as it offers the core apple Watch features for an attractive price. But, with the SE 2 the previous SE 1 just became even more affordable. If you are looking to upgrade your older Apple Watch Series 3 or are looking to get your first Apple Watch, the question is should you buy the latest Apple Watch SE 2 or is it worth saving some cash and getting the Apple Watch SE 1 instead? Price: Apple sell SE 2 for $249. Apple no longer sell SE 1 but on Amazon, eBay, I found 40mm version for around $170. Both great prices but $80 is a significant saving. Similarities. The SE 2 and SE 1 have a lot of common. Same design, from outside practically identical, same dimensions. SE 2 comes in Midnight vs Space Grey and has matte finish on back - otherwise the same. Identical great displays, rounded corners vs older Series 3 look more modern. Both SE 2 and SE 1 don’t have an always on display like on Series 8 and Series 7. Battery life is good on both watches, lasting all day (guide for how I setup for max features and battery life). In terms of those core Apple Watch features, both offer: messages, calls, water resistant to 50m, Fitness tracking, 24h continues heart rate monitoring, Sleep tracking, Siri, Apple Pay, Maps. Great so that means just get the SE 1 and save the cash right? Well, not so fast. Differences. The single biggest upgrade the Apple Watch SE 2 gets is the new more powerful processor - in fact the same processor as from the new Series 8. Important for two reasons. 1. Watch will perform very fast today, just as fast as the S8 and noticeably snappier compared to the SE 1. 2. Longevity. This means the Watch will support new software updates for many years, I’d estimate 5 maybe even 6 years! Compared to the SE 1 which I would expect to get another 2-3 years of software support. Big difference, meaning SE 2 will last almost twice as long. The SE 2 also adds crash detection. So which should you buy? Since the features are almost identical, with exception to crash detection, here is what this comparison comes down to: $249 SE 2, last 5-6 years of software support and new features. $170, $80 less, SE 1, last 2-3 years of software support and new features. If you divide this cost over the years each watch will likely last, the SE 2 is the better value option and better long term investment. This means if you are coming from an older model Apple Watch, for example the Series 3, go for the SE 2. However, if you are a firs time Apple Watch buyer and not yet sure if the Apple Watch is right for you, spending a bit less is not a bad idea as for $170 you can get the Apple Watch experience and see if the watch it right for you. If so, great then upgrade a few years down the road and if not, $170 is a smaller price to pay. But again for most, and especially if you are already an Apple Watch user, I suggest getting the new Apple Watch SE 2.

It will be nice if Apple updated the focus mode in Apple Watch to automatically switch to low power mode when a particular focus starts. This is available on the iPhone but not on the Apple Watch.

my favourite feature is the alarm, which sounds like such a small thing, but i find that it wakes me up way easier than my phone as it vibrates on my wrist

As a student i’d choose the SE 1 just because it’s cheaper lol. I’d still have the basic functions needed for basic tasks. I love how the essentials are already on hand, such as the heart rate monitor. Though the chip on the S2 will be more worth it as the update support will last longer.

Hi mate, great video, I appreciate how you get straight to the point without too much unnecessary fluff. Just bought the SE 2 and passed my SE 1 (which is still in great condition) onto a family member. The difference in responsiveness with the S8 chip is definitely noticeable.

• Apple Watch SE Nike (2020) GPS + Cellular model and it’s 5,700 TRY
• Apple Watch SE (2022) GPS model and it’s 6,000 TRY
It is good and important that the 2022 model lasts longer, but it is also very good and important that the 2020 model has the Cellular feature. I'm so undecided on what to do, any ideas?

Costco is still selling new se1’s. I bought one a few months ago and find it adequate. Very reliable on notifying me of txts and calls. Also multiple timers help when cooking
Great video-just picked up the SE1, and it’s awaiting shipment. The cellular model version saved me approximately $120 (Canadian) versus SE2, so it made sense. Also, with an iPhone XS, I’m not one to complain about having a slower chip 😅

i'm using apple watch se 1, affordable yet powerful. my favourite features are heart rate reader, fitness tracker and assistive touch.
I really like the crash detection and the emergency SOS via satellite feature.
Main reason why got the SE2 was for the crash detection I had the regular SE model which didn’t know gave it to my daughter I really wanted the newer models but cost to much

I feel like apple really did make it fair with the downgrade in features, for the price point. It just seems like you get a great product for the price and the features you might miss out on are not worth the higher price.

I’m considering the SE 2 because of the crash and falling down detection and I’m getting to that age….. also for checking blood pressure and heartbeat because I’ve had an irregular heartbeat in the past.

We brought my grandpa a series 7 last Christmas he didn’t really care for it until match of this year, he fell at home alone and his watch saved him. Man hasn’t taken it off since. So I really support older people getting one

Just bought the SE2 last week in Silver as my first Apple Watch and has been loving the experience so far. I think the plastic back isn’t a loss since we don’t really notice it in every wear. Plus I just need a watch that pairs with my phone and does its regular jobs well.

I just bought almost new Series 7 for the same price as SE2, which has a lot less features. So I dont think its worth the price.
Just received my SE2 today gave my SE to my daughter not seeing always on display on the 2 does it have 1? The newest models cost too much so this was the 2nd best for me

Back in 2021 I had the Se watch that was terrible it never hold a full charge during the day! Sent it back but then I got the series 3 2022 and it’s really really nice, charged great features… now the se2 I’m not sure if this would be my next upgrade no pun intended here But only “TIME” lol will tell🙃😃

Just picked up an SE1 for 150 from Walmart after reading that it’s essentially the same watch. Absolute steal IMO, same price as a Fitbit charge 5 but syncs better with my other Apple products like AirPods/beats and phone, and is also an interface im already familiar with, having owned the original Apple Watch. Super excited for it to come in!
Really just needed a watch for fitness tracking and so I wouldn’t have to take my phone on runs, and this fulfills both purposes. I don’t need all the extra features of the newer watches- I’m only going to have this watch on for workouts as I really love my actual analog watches for daily wear. I’ll probably just wear this at night and for my workout which I do as soon as I wake up early in the morning for sleep and workout tracking.

That’s the same exact reason I’m considering the SE1. When I’m at the gym, I’d either have to hold my phone or use an old school arm band for my phone. The one I have barely fits my phone and I’d definitely have to take my phone cover off to use it. Not to mention, I can’t wear it the normal way and control music. So I was considering an Apple watch so I can start closing these fitness rings!
The slower processing was noticeable in this video- not sure how I feel about the lag vs cost savings. But I can at least go to Walmart and check the SE1 out.

Hi Nathan, good question. From “investment” perspective the SE2 is best, but if you are a first timer, wanting to give it a shot I would go for the SE 1.

I tend to cover my watch with my jersey or jacket sleeve, so when I have to check my watch I naturally touch it to turn it on so the always on display is just be an unnecessary battery drain, unless you always have dirty or occupied hands😅

What happens when the updates end for the SE1? Does Apple send a self destruct signal to it?
Please do not give them any ideas:). When the updates end, you slowly lose some of the functionalities.

i upgraded from apple watch 3 38mm to apple watch watch 44mm. What I like most is that it has a bigger screen and it has a faster processor. have had it for 1 year now and still have 99 in battery health

I have iphone 14 pro max, air pod pro gen 2, and se1 apple watch 44mm for 170. felt that i just wanted something to track my fitness stuff and nothing to crazy. yes it has a better cpu in the se2 but what i need it for does not require a better cpu really.

Just picked up the SE 1 model 40mm case for $75 on the used market. In very good shape, was rose gold color, but I just put a black bumper case on because I didn't like the color. Being a guy, would of preferred the grey or silver, but with the bumper case, no one will ever know.

I really like theatre mode + the fact that allows you to use your Apple Watch to unlock your iPhone while wearing a mask. While it may sound small, it’s incredibly useful, and I would recommend it to everyone.

I bought the SE1 because it was only $159 at Walmart with cellular as an option and 44mm screen. Great value option coming from the series 3 and the processor is twice as fast.

The best feature of the new Apple Watch SE2, is how much you get for the price, haha. It’s almost as good as buying the new S8/Ultra without paying that much.
Now, comparing it with the “cheap “ of the Applewatch family, I’d rather pay a few bucks more to ensure a gadget for 4-5 years more, a little bit more “cutting edge”

According to Apple in 2027. It does not mean that after that date the Watch will stop working, but gradually it will lose some functionalities
Can you swim with the 1st gen SE watch, just want to be sure!
