It was great hearing how you concluded different things from the data that you gathered. Very few mechanics that comment here have 50 years or more of experience servicing cars.
I love how Scotty goes into detail about the possible causes and solutions to the engine light issue. That's what a true mechanic does.
It’s also helpful too.
@@andyblank4157 I agree.
@@ThomasKing19933 Good😊
Rite...
My nephew does that always. It’s always helpful.
We had engine lights and mechanic said code was misfiring...he suggested TWO THINGS for us to try - fill-up with fresh fuel, then - injector cleaner. He really TRIED not to have to try a repair....both of those failed, so he did a tune-up on our 170,000 mile Honda. Replaced spark plugs, cleaned injectors, and new air filter - no lights since over 20,000 miles. Total cost was $350- and that included replacing a leaky power steering hose + fluid. It's great to find honest mechanics.
Why would he really try not to have to try repair? Basically, why would the mechanic be so enthusiastic to deprive himself of some business?
@@Russell-rc6qq- Please tell me you miss the point of the original comment above.
@@Russell-rc6qq Because HE IS HONEST. He first verified that driving the car with lights on would not harm the engine. Then, with his 40 years of experience, he gave us two options to try before using him.
Also, he has earned our ongoing business - we have three cars and he'll profit far more than the thieves in the next town over where we haven't been back in 5 years.
@@RustyCar Why don't you go ahead and tell me then? Tell me that the mechanic is not a keen businessman and wanted to avoid doing "repair" at all costs but was found there was no choice but to commence with said "repair" work.
@@Russell-rc6qq - I already told you my perspective. Don’t get butt hurt!
Did Scotty die again or is GM and Ford going bankrupt for the 4th time this month?
😂😂
Gm or Ford won't go away. The government needs them for those endless wars.😂

All depends on the accountant, you want to show a profit or loss. The new world with tax loop holes. 😅
I am fortunate to have a local mechanic named Nick in Granby MA who I can trust with my cars
Using the scan tool is the correct way to diagnose the problem, not guessing and replacing parts. It is hard to find a trustworthy mechanic like Scotty.
You got that right.
I give credit where credit is due. Scotty Kilmer is one smart mechanic and engineer. Those of us idiots can't figure out the simplest fix. The simplest fix will not necessarily fix the problem.
There is a reason why Scotty has over 6+ million subscribers.. :)
My check engine light has been on for 11 years. A few garages soaked me for a few hundred a few years ago, I learned the hard way. In Canada you could not get your sticker renewed if this light was on back then. Check engine light is a money grab for garages. Never had a problem with my Toyota Corolla ever.
90% of check engine light causes are emissions and often bad sensors.
My husband's Chevy Cobalt's check engine light has been on for years. My check engine light on my 2003 Mustang GT goes on and off for a while. It stays off more than it is on. Both run good.
my car is now 28 years old and only needs a safety check to pass for inspection in texas.
dash lights are on and it still passes.
@@DarkForce2024 I have never heard of the light blinking. Thanks for that 😊
@@toriless That is what they told me year after year.
I'm so sorry to hear about the terrible news. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
You know what would be cool? If cars had the diagnositic testing tool that Scottie uses built directly into the car so it would just tell you what was wrong with it instead having a single light that can mean dozens of things.
For 10 bucks you can get a Bluetooth dongle and use torque on your phone. But there is no point to it. You wouldn't be able to make sense of it anyway.
Nope!! That would save time, money and make sense...
Cadillac.... DIC
Cadilac did it once but if you had the ability to do diagnodtics and bi directional testing you wouldnt have to spend money at their dealers
I’ll bet the industry was shocked
@@PS-js9oh 😂
Crazy you could pull all that data on a 20yo car.
I own a 2002 Grand am gt1. I put a lot of money into it ( all new sensors, connectors, reman trans, fuel pump accessories) and it's still cheaper than buying a new car. I love the styling of the body. I have never seen a car that looks like it. Thanks Scotty. I have a cheap 200 dollar scanner and it gives plenty enough info for me. Your teaching is priceless.
Fuel pump - I’m replacing mine, started with burned up fuel pump relay. Replaced relay, but Pressure at fuel rail is 10psi below what service manual says it should be. Hope the new fuel pump and new sending unit replacement cure the issue. Glad Scotty mentioned it in this video.

I drove my last pickup for 100k miles with the check engine light on.
You probably had an EVAP leak. That will trigger the check engine light but won't effect the driveability.
Can also remove the light or tape over the damn thing.
Same with my Suzuki, "check engine" light on for years it just keeps going as well as it ever did. I checked the engine, when I lifted the bonnet the engine was still in there. No need to fix it, we don't have a yearly inspection.
I have a Suzuki Samurai and it predates silly stuff like "Check Engine" lights!
@@gazzafloss There is a need to fix. That light is coming on for a reason!

A 22 year old Grand Am is pretty impressive.
Most of them are in pretty good shape. I have one. The 3400 is very reliable. And it’s kind of a sleeper too like if you have the right mods, the thing can scream, especially with a cool intake and a few other things. I had an engine change tho and I’m about to get my transmission changed. Only 150k miles, as long as you keep up with your oil maintenance these things are very durable, and the parts are pretty easy to replace too.
@@bostonwarrior4824 No "screaming" or sounding like M-80s are going off. I hate cars like that!
I love to listen to someone who knows how to logically trouble complex systems... that only comes with many years of experience, but the way you explained it, I felt like I just gained some of those years of your experience... '; )
I really love your 15 years old blue jacket.
Pontiacs were the cars with more buttoms. I had a Pontiac Boneville from that time. It also have a ton of clading, so it looks very different from it twins at GM.
Other than that, that 2002 Pontiac Grand Am seems to be in perfect condition for a 2002 and considering the majority of those grand dams and any Pontiac were driven hard and put up wet that one looks to be in probably the best condition I have ever seen when it comes to 2002 Pontiac Grand Ams
I miss my Grand Am GT.
I use to have one, thing was awesome!. I have the SE now, but I put a cool air intake and a bunch of mods so it runs like the GT did. Very similar. Except i had to get a new engine with the SE😂
Is that the last Grand Am in existence !? I NEVER see them anymore!
Yeah, I don’t really see them a lot either anymore but I drive one every day. I make sure to pay attention and I rarely see one like once a month maybe and I drive every day constantly. These models were only made for a couple years and people don’t really drive them anymore since they are old. I mean they’re a decent car though.
Thanks again for your update.
you are one great man to help people. and were going to miss you if you ever have to stop helping all of us. "THAK YOU"
I know that area! I used to live right down the road. I hope you're having a great visit! You picked a day to film when it wasn't raining lol.
Those Pontiacs are notorious for the fuel pump going bad. I had two of them go out in my 94 Grand Am in a 3 year span when it had under 80k miles.
Still waiting for the "terrible news" part
what are you talking about
GM (Holden) pulled out of Australia cause the federal and local governments stop giving them kickbacks. GM were making great cars in Australia. Then they started importing crap and rebadging them as holdens,Australians weren't having any of that. Ford Australia did the same. Both companies were producing great stuff.
Google China Motors (GM)...sad
Canberra had to subsidize production in Australia because the cost of labour was far too high to make it viable without subsidies.

I think alot. Of Scotty.he has helped so many people under believe able .i appreciate the info.
When you make junk nobody wants it. When you make quality vehicles (Toyota) people wait in line for them.
I saw that German electric airplane in a youtube video about six months ago. Looked real and made a regular runway liftoff, no VTOL at that point.
No way Scotty threw that Australia meme in there. Dude is a real one

Check the raw data, check the raw data, EXCEPT I DON'T HAVE $2000 to buy a professional Autel scanner like the one YOU have to check Bozo the auto mechanic's diagnosis, NOW WHAT? Just remember, there are more good mechanics than bad mechanics. Also listen to Scotty’s wise words!
I think ethanol is bad for fuel pumps.
You should see what it does to a carb that sits for awhile. Stuff is garbage!

Hi mr garrison👋🍻
Sometimes the check woman light goes on to demand attention...Yet under identical conditions she works great....and purrs like a kitten. Maybe I need a bigger scan tool.
These cars have a service engine sooon with same symbols as check engine
I’ve had emissions fail my brothers car when it wasn’t a check engine (it was oil change due!) service engine soon light!
They already have electric planes in northern Europe, they are small, a few passengers and equipment, regular planes.
An electric plane's battery weighs just as much when the plane takes off as it does at the end of the trip. Every pound of hydrocarbon aviation fuel that gets burned in flight is a pound that is no longer weighing the aircraft down. Good luck developing a battery-powered airliner with the load capacity and range of B777s or A350s.
Nope. Ain't getting in one of those!
Yeah, don’t think electric vehicles are going to be replacing gasoline power any time soon. Why else would 2 new gas stations have been built in my town inside of the last six months!
Fuel pump pressure?....Fuel filter? I've been through the fuel pump replacement thing....not cheap!
Yup...if My fuel pump starts going I do the relay too at the same time
OEM sensors not the cheap auto store stuff. Esp knock and 02 sensors, learned the hard way
I've never had an engine light go back off. Without unhooking the battery.
Didn’t think china liked American cars due to their size they’re hard to park and manoeuvre around in traffic that’s why a lot of Chinese and Japanese cars are small!
Every time I watch a video from Scotty I notice the subscriber numbers..Seems to go up by 100,000 a week...
The best part of a car is the one with the least electronics. And its the manual transmission.
"Don't take peoples words. Get the data." Sage advice for life.
Yeah I’ve had my grand am check engine light on for over 1 years and a half now, ever since I replaced the engine on it the check engine light just won’t go out I mean it runs fine. But I try to get my mechanic to do some codes on it. He clears some codes and it never goes away. I can tell I need a new water pump probably because of the whining… Grand ams are very reliable and the 3400 is no joke, with right mods the thing screams!. It’s just I need to change my transmission soon. It slips it’s very rough and gear and that’s the only issue I have. I’ve had the car for a long time only started doing this in the last 6 months
So other than CEL on, water pump trans bad its fine.
Bet if you fix the cel problem it runs better than fine.
@@gordocarbo yeah. Despite those issues, I can still drive it every day if I just baby it. I just can’t go on far trips, especially it struggles uphill. I will say Lucas oil helped a ton for the tranny fluid. When I first got it, I had to put a new engine in it. I had multiple head, gaskets blown when I bought it, engine temp would go all the way to 360. It wasn’t good, but luckily I got it replaced. Then some genius pulled out in front of me and I couldn’t put the brakes on in time because they just randomly pulled out in front of me and I crashed into them and basically totaled it. Well, they were at fault their insurance company deemed it, but I didn’t want it totaled. So I got together with my mechanic and I rebuilt the whole front end myself. My insurance company didn’t really give me a hard time, but I got it fixed. Had to buy a whole, but luckily the frame wasn’t damaged and there was no other internal issues. Like I said, I know I need a water pump as well. It whines like crazy but like I said it’ll still get you point a to point B

Save money on transportation and get healthy exercise. Ride a bicycle to school, work or for fun.
Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles. Safe protected bike lanes and trails are needed so adults and children can ride safely. Speak up for bicycles in your community. Bicycles make life and cities better. Ask your local transportation planner and elected officials to support more protected bike lanes and trails. Children should be riding a bicycle to school and not be driven in a minivan. E-bikes are bringing many older adults back to cycling.
Hey scotty, why are you new toyota's blow so many engines? Why no videos?
I had a 1988 Pontiac 6000 that had the Check Engine light on for YEARS! I drove the SH*T outta that thing without any problems, even with that light on - only reason I ever got rid of it, I finally was making enough money to buy a new car!
On some the light comes on at oil change interval and has to to be turned off. Reset by following instruction in manual or reset by scan tool.
Would have ditched that car before spending money for new injectors.

Lack of knowledge of late model cars is his problem.
Cant believe how many commenters never dfix anything when CEL comes on they just keep going and going til it stops ?
Its there for a reason. One more reason I wont buy cars anymore just keep what I got
I agree 100%. The light is coming on for a reason and they are saying to just tape over the light and remove it? What an idiotic mentality!

The facts on those electric powered Aircraft, there are already videos on them I just watched one yesterday.
I see the electric powered aircraft best used for short duration situations like pilot training and parachute businesses, maybe in the future when Batteries get better energy density and lighter weight.

How terrible is the news Scotty?
He's pissed and mad as hell.
That’s funny. I had an E46 (2003 BMW 325xi) and the fuel pump started to go. There was no check engine light for it at that time. I just gassed up one day and the car refused to start. However, a rubber mallet tapped to the underside of the gas tank got it going. Since it was winter, I drove it another 6 weeks keeping a rubber mallet in my car until it failed in mid-drive (up a mountain so that was scary - I rolled backwards but since I just passed an outdoor shooting range, I “steered” it the best I could into the opening to the range). The job to replace it meant dropping the whole gas tank to replace the part (part was cheap, but the job was awful). When it failed, we had a 6inch sheet of ice to work on for about 4+ hours (February in the mountains of NJ). The problem was it was my only car and I relied on a BMW with over 100,000 miles on it. After that gem I downgraded that car to a weekend car that I didn’t need to rely on to get to work. I shutter at the thought of failing fuel pumps.

20+ years is usually the life span of a fuel pump anyway.
My 2001 Pontiac Aztek has its original fuel pump and still runs great near as I can tell. Are you telling me it is on its way out?
@@Russell-rc6qq depends on mileage. Ive owned quite a few cars, and when they get to 250,000km which is usually around the 20+ years..........things start to fail, like alternators, starter motors, fuel pumps etc. Its just cheaper and more convenient to replace them, instead of being stranded in the middle of nowhere.
