    ------------------------------------------------
    Food trucks are a vital part of many vibrant neighborhoods. For some entrepreneurs, they're a great way to enter the food industry.
    Laura Pekarik is one of these entrepreneurs. She sells cupcakes from a food truck in Chicago. Laura says the food truck industry "gives individuals like me an entrance into a market opportunity for the small business owner that otherwise wouldn't have been there. I was able to rent a kitchen space instead of renting a whole brick and mortar and managing a team of people. Everything kind of was under my control to kind of get my feet wet in the business."
    But since starting her business, the increased regulations have made it too hard for her to take her truck in to the city. Often she is not even allowed to park. When she does find parking, she can only stay 2 hours. "Every moment that we're driving around and not parked in the location with our window open meant that we couldn't sell," she says.
    Baltimore Pizza Truck operator Joey Vanoni tells John Stossel about his similar experiences. He is not allowed to park his truck within 300 feet of any brick and mortar restaurant that sells pizza. Joey says that means "there's almost nowhere left for me to operate."
    Why do politicians limit where food trucks may park? Chicago Alderman Tom Tunney says he wants to protect existing restaurants. "It is such a small margin business and it employs so many people," Tunney explains. "That's what we need to protect." Stossel says, he's a bottlenecker.

      I am pretty sure the reason why people don't care about this sort of thing is because virtually everyone I have met in my lifetime, usually as a subset of things that they themselves want government protections for. With the exception of a handful of Libertarians of course.
      My brother gets so pissed when government does things like this, but at the same time when he gets government favors like tax credits for owning a home or a farm, he thinks that is perfectly justifiable because he happens to own a home and a farm.
      Virtually everyone in the USA with the exception of 1% of the population always seem to have their particular flavor of government that they adore.

      Because they have been "educated" in government schools who teach them that the government is always doing the good/just/moral/right thing. Couple that with all of the pro-government propaganda from the corporate media, and it's inconceivable to the average person that, actually, the government acts in its own best interest, and that comes at the expense of, not the benefit of us "normal folks".

      @@star999nine You gotta think about the logistics instead of thinking that the neighborhood is gonna collapse for whatever reason. People who run food trucks still have to pay taxes, so their profits that you want the government to waste aren't taking anything away from the economy. And it's not like the food and gas comes out of thin air, they have to pay for that too. Food trucks have their limits, such as size, supply, and the types of food that can be made and sold efficiently. Food trucks also have the problem of probably not having a faucet with enough running water. They are great for fast food and snacks, but they don't have an established location for business, which is both an advantage and a drawback.
      Business is business, and competition is a b*tch, but that's just the reality of it. Adapt or go bankrupt. No favoritism. Restaurants and food trucks have their place, for they sell their own varieties of food for different occasions. They don't even have to be enemies. One restaurant (more likely corporation) could have food trucks that are like its satellites, so that could be an issue if it monopolizes all the spaces in a given area. However, the autonomy that comes from having your own food truck can incentivize people to prefer making it their own business instead of a satellite.

    Just curious, has government even bothered to learn basic economics?
    “Uggh these food trucks will put existing businesses out of business!”
    “Why?”
    “Because they have a cheaper and more convenient business model!”
    “Yeah it’s called capitalism! when a business starts competing with another they have two options. They can either improve their existing business or change nothing and risk losing it.”
    What people don’t often realize is that when businesses are allowed to compete it results in better service no matter the outcome. However, when businesses aren’t allowed to compete and government steps in, it results in the better business closing or being unavailable and the bad business remaining open and feeling fairly safe in the fact they can continue being terrible and know they won’t have any competition.

    • @irissitu2126
      @irissitu2126 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The only way for businesses to compete is for the state to regulate the economy. Otherwise, monopolies form. Funny thing though, when the state regulates the economy, its almost always in favor of the monopolies (e.g. for the brick and mortar monopoly on restaurants), allowing monopolies to form. In the end it's not just the government that's ruining the free market, it's the capitalists too.

    • @americap5749
      @americap5749 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Cyrus Situ yes but often times, as you point out, when government over regulates a service it becomes a monopoly. This can happen indirectly through increased business taxes and stricter regulations that prevent smaller business from being able to afford competing or directly through subsidies that prevent large businesses from failing no matter how poorly they perform. People assume that a lack of regulation in capitalism would lead to monopolies, but it’s actually the opposite. While it is true that without economic regulation of the free market large businesses would become even larger, what we all tend to forget is that the same would happen to small businesses thus increasing their ability to compete in the free market. Less regulation would also increase the number of small businesses which by definition would lessen the likelihood of a monopoly forming. My point is that if anyone honestly thinks that by imposing regulations on corporations will reduce their power and prevent monopolies is kidding themselves. Just ask yourself: “What will a higher corporate tax and more regulation on a particular service do to a company that can easily afford to pay the extra money in taxes or change their business to meet regulations?” The short answer is they’ll just take a big hit in profits which will either come out of their employees pay checks or perhaps lead to them being laid off all together. And despite all those valiant efforts to “stick it to the man” the rich will still get richer and the poor business owners that couldn’t afford the new business tax or the changes it would take to be compliant with regulations will either have to shutdown for good or forgo a paycheck for themselves just so they can afford to pay their employees. In the end your goal of preventing monopolies from forming isn’t reached and all you’ve done is gotten a lot of people fired and put lot of hard working business owners out of business. Isn’t it just wonderful what the government can do to the free market!👍🏻

      Reminds me of raising the minimum wage. All the businesses that can't afford it go out of business reducing supply of goods. With a smaller supply of goods, the businesses that pay the minimum wage raise the price of their goods and thus much of the wage gains go to higher prices. Meanwhile entry-level people are unemployed and college students choose to work high-minimum wage jobs instead of finishing their degrees faster.

    California is way ahead of the curve on stopping food trucks. 12 years ago I was looking into starting a food truck business, and the health department said we had to have a brick and mortar professional kitchen to work out of, which made it way too expensive.
    One thing not mentioned in the article is that they want to discourage food trucks for the same reason they want to discourage people living in trailer parks. The government makes less property taxes that way.

But they`re all freely chosen by all the parties democraticaly. Everyone has a vote and they decide who they favor, creating even more advantages and disadvantages.
      And that's okay, no-one unloaded coercion towards others to achieve that advantage, it was all voluntary decisions made by individuals.
      You're free to decide who you favour. And even more, you're free to decide if you want to favour someone at all.

    As someone who wanted to own and run a food truck, i can say with certainty that in South Carolina it is extremely difficult to operate one. Numerous tariffs, a limit on how many can be operated in a certain county and the fact that its first come first serve to renew your licences, and the property laws allowing trucks to operate in specific areas are very limiting. It's cheaper to rent out a space at an already existing location.

    America is supposed to be land of opportunity. When seven year olds have their lemonade stands shut down by cops, yes the government can be tiresome.
    My town just did an experiment with food trucks, one day a week they could park in the Park and Ride and open for business. There were no other restaurants too close, and the ones that were, just had fast food. I hope they do it again, for more days a week. It was great that the food trucks had a designated area of the lot, didn't have to drive all over looking for an acceptable spot to park, that also followed city regulations.
    First time open brick and mortar restaurants often fail for a variety of reasons. A food truck cuts expenses for start-ups, who may eventually open a restaurant. In the meantime, they get their name brand and products known to customers. And it is great for customers if they can go to several trucks open close together. You can get appetizer at one truck, entree at another, desert somewhere else, and also drinks.

Food cart presence doesn't seem to be hurting our restaurants, and a fair number of successful food carts go on to establish brick and mortar restaurants too. Not to mention the restaurants who open up carts to expand their base. Lots of opportunities and choice in this foodie town, everyone benefits.

    what the restaurant owner doesn't even realize is that he's not even (directly) in competition with the food truck, remember its not just the food you pay for but the experience. The food truck customer is looking for something that is quick and convenient (on the go), the person who goes to a restaurant is often looking for a relaxing experience with friends /. family, staying for at least 90 minutes, 3 courses and a bottle of good wine.
