    3-4 weeks ago, I decided to try this with my very poor-looking, leggy mint. I cut it ALL down, all the way to the ground. As of today, I have 5 small, beautiful, lush mint plants bursting through the soil in all corners of the pot. THANK YOU for saving my plant!!

    • @rafaltruszkowski2751

      @@IcarianGreenWings How long has it been since you cut it down? Was it completely dead when you did? No green leaves whatsoever and only brown sticks? It took a few weeks for mine to come crawling back.

    • @IcarianGreenWings
      @IcarianGreenWings 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rafaltruszkowski2751 yeah, it completely died down. It was good, but i was moving and put it on a bit too dark place in the new apartment so it died down. Then i cut it down and put on the window and watered daily. It's been a few weeks but it still hasn't regrown. Maybe it's because summer is over?

    • @truszko91
      @truszko91 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@IcarianGreenWings if you're desperate, you can always dig into the soil with your 🖐️ and see what's up! Inspect the roots, see if any new shoots are coming up. If you are watering it daily, it might be too wet! You shouldn't water it until the top two inches of the soil are very dry. Also, make sure your pot has drainage. Otherwise your bottom of the pot will retain all that water, and the roots will rot in that underground pool.

    • @IcarianGreenWings
      @IcarianGreenWings 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@truszko91 ohhhh that might have been a mistake too. I always thought mint needed a lot of water so I made sure it had plenty. I really hope i didn't kill it off completely.

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mint usually needs to be dormant once a year to grow well, cutting it back and leaving it somewhere cold for a few weeks should give it the dormancy it needs. Then bring it back to a warm location and it should grow well. Mint is usually dormant over winter so you might find it doesn't grow well again until spring.

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  ปีที่แล้ว

      For mint you can use houseplant feed or a balanced feed. For most other herbs I would use a balanced/multipurpose feed. A feed which is high in nitrogen encourages lots of lush leaves so avoid tomato feed.

    I have a spearmint plant and it's my first time to have a plant to take care of. I don't know why it just died the next day I bought it from an herb garden. But I'm afraid to cut the remaining fresh leaves just like what you did.

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If its died that quickly then it's probably due to lack of water. I would give it a good watering and see if it perks up, if it doesn't after two days then cut off all the dead and wait a couple of weeks to see if it regrows. Mint likes to be kept damp at all times, but don't have it sitting in water.

  • @Ableburble
    @Ableburble 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Do you suggest cutting it down when the weather is getting cold? I rescued an indoor mint plant that wasn't watered enough and it's leaves are turning yellow and dying and the plant is droopy. What type of feed do you suggest to add?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mint usually goes dormant in cold weather so I would cut it back to the ground and allow it to become dormant over winter. If your growing it inside and it's warm enough you could try growing it over winter, but they don't usually do as well over winter with the low light levels. I would use a liquid feed that is high in nitrogen, a balanced liquid feed also works well. The high nitrogen levels encourage larger leaves.

      @Gardeningat58N  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should be able to do the same to parsley, I've done it a few times, it works but not quite as well. Also parsley is biennial so after a year or two it will flower and die, but cutting all the leaves off can reduce the chance of this and you can sometimes get an extra year from the plant. Its got a thick tap root a bit like a small carrot, so it normally has a lot of energy stored ready to regrow its leaves.

      Yes, you need to take into consideration your climate. Make sure you have two months left before hard frosts arrive, this technique works best in summer or on plants that are grown indoors. Come autumn it's usually too late in the year to do this unless its grown indoors or in a mild climate.

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad you found my video useful. Yes I'm using a small grow lamp, the one I'm using has a pure white light and fits in a usual desk lamp, the reason I use this kind is because the desk lamp concentrates the light in a small area, the white light is good for making time lapse videos as it doesn't have any colour tint, also the lamp is low power to save on my electric bills. I use a compact fluorescent bulb with a ses e14 fitment. The bulb is 20 watts and has a light temperature of 6500k which is simmilar to daylight. Here is a link to it www.amazon.co.uk/MiniSun-Energy-Saving-Daylight-Spiral/dp/B00CS38J82/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1505981628&sr=8-6&keywords=grow+bulb+cfl
      If you want to grow plants under grow lamps this bulb is ideal for individual small plants, and I have had great results with it as you can see in this video, but if you have large plants or a number of plants you would certainly need much more powerful bulbs with a higher lumen output.

      @@Linda_Meyn If your in the UAE then it should grow over winter as well as summer. But as it's not a tropical plant it probably won't last more than two years in a warm climate as it needs a winter dormancy period at least once a year to grow well. Mint loves water so make sure the compost is always damp, but don't let it sit soaking wet as it will rot the roots. How often you should water will depend on many different variables, such as light, temperature, pot size, time of year etc. But I usually water mine two or three times a week.

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For this video I used a cfl bulb rated at 20 watts, with a kelvin of 6500. Its powerful enough for a small plant, or a large shade loving plant. Also the 6500k gives a nice white light which is close to sunlight, but with a little more blue, this helps to discourage flowering and promotes leaf growth.

      @@Gardeningat58N Thanks for this update ! Indeed, a 2x00 or 4000K seems to NOT work at all in my case, so I also ordered 6500K. For now, GU10 mounting with 28W and I plan to put it about 30-40 cm above the plant.
      But...fir st I have to deal with a falling off lower leaves as they become green and fall off - honestly I don't know what might be the problem. Did you also observe or faced the same problem ? Heat, light, humidity, water...? I can only guess now...

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adamwalter2573 That set up should work well for you. Dropping of lower leaves is usually over watering or lack of nitrogen, but usually the leaves turn yellow first, also mint is not easily over watered. Is it winter where you are? If so the mint might need a dormant period as it usually dies back to the ground over winter. Most types of mint need a few months of winter rest where the temperatures are close to freezing, it will then regrow in spring. If it doesn't get a rest period once a year the mint will slowly die.

Today I checked and the soil PH is about 5.5-6.0, 21^C and air has ~75% humidity. Still, no reasonable growth. The plants I took from my garden, but since this is my first try I MIGHT have damaged its roots - at least this is what I read on the internet (=falling off leaves, poor growth).
      Today I ordered few meters of diodes 5050 with red and blue light (460 and 650nm, 6500k) and will see whether it's not related to a lack of "power form the light". Now I'm using 4000k leds and I "suspect" the light level is not enough. So, two things to check - take newer roots and increase light.
      Oh, I also planted a small amout of cress to se how fast it goes up. During the summer ot goes up like a crazy, but now with those 4000k leds it...well, it's alive, goes up, but very slowly, despite having 75% air humidity, so I suspect not a lack of dormant period, but..."light issue" :)

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mint plants like a lot of water, make sure they are always damp and are never allowed to dry out. But make sure they are not soaking wet and sitting in water, otherwise they will rot. I can't tell you the frequency as it depends on lots of factors such as pot size, light levels and temperature, but I would expect every two to three days on average. On a sunny hot windowsill more like daily.

    • @Gardeningat58N

      At this time of year it is probably due to natural aging of the older leaves, if you live in a climate with frost I would expect the whole plant to die back soon ready for dormancy over winter. If you live somewhere warmer then follow the instructions in this video and it should re-sprout with fresh healthy leaves.

    I have one question. Let me tell you first what happened. I bought mint and repotted it and then water it. But day after day something happened with the mind and now is almost dead. I don't know what happened I water it every day, has good light, good soil but its dying. I fear I overwater it. what can be the cause or that? is it requiring less water and more drain? or can be some other reason I don't know. Oh that's 8 years ago lol. :)

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It could be over watered, although mint likes lots of water it doesn't like to sit in waterlogged soil, any excess water needs to drain out of the pot, make sure there are holes in the bottom. Another reason is the time of year, mint naturally dies back to the ground at this time of year and goes dormant over winter, so it may not grow again until spring.
