      America - we say restroom in public places and more often bathroom in homes though sometimes in public places too. The mens’ room or ladies’ room is also used and sounds quite polite to me. Washroom? Maybe. It sounds almost old fashioned or perhaps regional to me but I certainly think everyone would understand it. Toilet and loo are not used in America.

    Well a german def. wouldnt find it rude if you asked where the toilet is bc "Toilette" is actually pretty polite "Klo" is what most people use and refers to the actual loo not just the room.^^ Some people also say (roughly translated) I have to go big (if you take a shit. There are also expressions for weeing) but mostly with people you know well. The politest you could use would be "the quiet place" but youd get weird looks for that its just too uncommon. But I guess that is just the stereotypical rudness kicking in. (Btw WC is also usable and probably a middle way)

    I’ve been to the UK a while ago and I noticed that, instead of simply greeting me, many cashiers asked me how I was. I was wondering whether or not they’d expect an answer from a customer, especially because they’re often so busy when there’s a long queue.

    I would avoid using #3 "Do you mind if I ..." with younger generations. E.g. "Do you mind if I open the window?". If I agree to open the window, I would say "no..." which means "no, I don't mind you opening the window" if it is older generations (50 y/o and above). However, the younger ones would take that answer "no" as a disagreement to opening the window.

  • @rachaelbullmore48

    You know, asking for the toilet, loo, lavatory or whatever is fine but please don't add that you need to:
    * spend a penny
    * have a dump
    * drop the kids off at the pool.
    These might well be euphemisms for having a poo but it's really not nice to say any of them. Just say you need the toilet/bathroom/to visit the gents' and we can work out the rest.
    Nobody wants to know what you need to do once you have located the toilet.

    • @rachaelbullmore48

      @@EatSleepDreamEnglish you are announcing the specific need to poo (historically men didn't need to pay to use the toilet if only going for a wee as they were not obliged to wash their hands and use the water), gross though that may be. Spend a penny means to pay to use the public toilet to have a poo. It's too much information

    What can I say if I have just said something that is unclear and the other person needs explanation? I mean sometimes I say something to a native speaker and then they are baffled and I know that from their facial expression and then they ask for further explanation.But then there is a big pause because I don't know how to respond whether it is something common for me and I take it for granted or I am not prepared for this( for example when I have to say a lot but I don't think that the other person would be interested).
