Such a radical powerful line. Too bad that the modern Americans departure from these words and instead worship hierarchy and repression. Their belief in freedom is limited to owning guns and mass consumerism. The spirit of rebellion is dead.

Amazing! As an European i never heard of the Green Mountain Boys or Republic of Vermont before today, Really fascinating stuff!
Many people here deride the U.S. for "Not having a culture of their own" and honestly, i hate these prejudice, America may have lots of things that we may not comprehend, but has a beautifully modern and fascinating history, and natural landscapes envyed by the world!
So it makes me kinda sad to see the division that your great nation it's currently facing.

As a historian, I feel the big reason is we can't trace back a big heroic lineage to Rome or Germania tribes etc. but in the relative short time we've been around we do have a strong cultural story. We may not have Hermann or Scipio but we have Ethan Allen and Washington

@@MrEpeeFencer Actually, their attitudes maintained the mentality of the cause. The cause in itself was a more relativistic and lax society. If you seriously think that they had nothing to do with it, I don't know what else to tell you. The hippies became professors and the authorities of academia. They have instilled this thought process of relativism and moral indifference in the next generation, mine. They have narrowed notions of the founding of our country to nothing more than 'white men prospering off of others'. Additionally, they felt that Communism was a way for people to come together in peace and love. Such delusional beliefs have begun to destroy the foundations of this great nation. I would not call that a symptom, I would call that a cause for much grief that we deal with today. Philosophically and otherwise.

The threat comes from within. The so-called party of tolerance. They trample on the rights of the citizens and see the citizen only as a piggy bank that they can shake whenever they run out of money to waste so they can get more money to waste. New taxes under the ruse of being to combat "Climate Change" Global Warming". They fake sympathy for the ones that are forced to pay them. Claiming there was no alternative. Then you have the ones that think putting Democratic in front of Socialism makes it any better. Socialism is just the less extreme brother of Communism. All communist nations began as Socialist ones. I'm 31 I was born in the hospital in New Port in the Northeast Kingdom. I hate the cities, 10 years ago the cities were relatively safe. Now they are as dangerous as Chicago or New York. Career politicians are a cancer, a cancer that must be cut out. Term limits are a must.

"General Ethan Allen of Vermont died and went to Hell this day."
    - Rev. Ezra Stiles, president of Yale College, diary entry 12 February 1789
"Passed by Ethan Allyn's grave. An awful Infidel, one of ye wickedest men ye ever walked this guilty globe. I stopped & looked at his grave with a pious horror."
    - Rev. Nathan Perkins in "Narrative of a Tour Through the State of Vermont," 25 May 1789
These comments amount to tributes, to a true revolutionary.

Vermont wasn't a state in 1789 it was its own republic which was the first nation on the planet to ban the practice of slavery by its constitution.

I'm a Vermonter, and I've never heard this before! What a great state this is. Or was, rather. I note that they seem to group New Hampshire and New York in among the enemies; not surprising, considering Vermont was born of land contested between the two, until the inhabitants told them what they could go and do with each other. The only state in the US beside Texas that was its own Republic before joining the US...over a decade. Sometimes I wish we'd stayed our own nation. But the US would have sore missed our boys during the Civil War!

I think they would have been missed more during the Revolutionary War. I'm so thrilled that such a big chunk of my taxes goes toward educating today's youth! Instead of using $$ to teach History they use it to teach about what a horrible 'world citizen' the US is.

The Vermont Republic is a term used by historians to refer to the government of Vermont that existed from 1777 to 1791. In January 1777, delegates from 28 towns met and declared independence from the jurisdictions and land claims both of the British colony of Quebec and of the American states of New Hampshire and New York. They also abolished adult slavery within their boundaries. Many people in Vermont took part in the American Revolution, although the Continental Congress did not recognize the jurisdiction as independent. Because of vehement objections from New York, which had conflicting property claims, the Continental Congress declined to recognize Vermont, then known as the New Hampshire Grants. Vermont's overtures to join the British Province of Quebec failed. In 1791, Vermont officially joined the United States as the 14th state.

@@pierceriddick7311 you mean that if you bought property with someone else's money, it belongs to that person until you pay them back. it makes sense, technically when you take out a loan for a home, the bank is paying for that home and you are allowed to live there while paying for it. it's like a rent to own sort of deal just with a different name. you can't really say that you bought something yourself if the money was someone else's and you can't really claim that something is yours while you've yet to pay for it in full.

I was born and raised in the Green Mountains. It makes me sick to my guts to see what has happened to the rugged hardcore Green Mountain State. Infiltrated by a bunch of tree hugging liberal pansies that want to freeload off society, drive out independence, freedom, liberty and force Socialism down the throats of everyone that try to oppose them. What few of us native born conservatives that are left have always fought the good fight, but our numbers are dwindling, we are left deserted by our fellow conservatives who have all died or moved to other states. Vermont is fast becoming a lost cause. Unless we get many conservative reinforcements soon, I fear Vermont will become another casualty of the Socialism war.

This song "The Green Mountaineer" contains messages that could just as easily apply to a Socialist ethic. "Our leaders themselves are our own fellow men; who can handle the sword and the scythe and the pen!" - The linking of Sword(military) with Scythe(agriculture) and Pen(intellectual) is a profoundly left-wing sentiment! Class divisions make for unhealthy and unequal societies.
I live in a country still ruled by the British Monarch.
      Unelected.
      Unwanted.
      Unnecessary!
Hail Hail an Independent Scottish Socialist Republic!

"The tribute we pay shall be prisons and graves"
Two of the best lines I've ever heard in any song. And this from a state that routinely elects a Stalinist...um..."democratic socialist" to the Senate. Vermont has gone downhill in the past 240-odd years. Beautiful state, but something is rotten there.

Robert Allen was a several times great grandfather of mine. Before I knew about his role in the revolution or my relation to him, I already was wearing a red wool hunting cap regularly and keep a green felt forest cloak around. Also I'm definitely of the liberty persuasion. This is a great song.

We have become lovers of contentment and contentment slays ambition. The dumbing down is America is by old design. The supreme law says this country is ours, but only few will stand because of fear. Fear of losing that which makes them content. There are more of us than many believe it is that we are silent and thus others likeminded believe they are alone, not knowing there brethren are but a shout away. We are the the greatest people on earth. We were born of war, we learned who we were in war. We showed the world who we are in war... We are American... We the people. Lets us rise and take her back.
