Une version extraordinaire de ce récit biblique, un des plus célèbres de la Bible. Tout concourt à rendre passionnante cette histoire d’amour et de trahison.(Livres des Juges, chapitre 16). Elīna Garanča chante divinement. Le décor de salle de bains !? ne doit pas gâcher notre plaisir.
В живую к сожалению не слушал, но и в записи звучит колосальною и вражающе, никак не могу вырваться в Европу чтобы живьем Гаранчу послушать, то времени нет то денег нет а то и первого и второго вместе, но как по мне Гаранчу стоит и послушать и посмотреть не так уж и дорого , а работу всю никогда не переделаеш надо чем-то жертвовать.
Underrated tenor? He was once considered the best tenor in the world (late 1990's early 2000's). Mostly when he was married to Gheorghiu. He was highly praised in the opera world. Not sure what you are talking about.

You are right about Jussi, the first time I heard him I was a 15 year old at boarding school when a master put the duet from The Pearl Fishers, with Merrill on. The hair literally stood up on my neck, and I maintain to this day, ( 67 years on,) that it is still the bench mark. Corelli, De Stefano, Kraus and Bergonzi were all great in the 60's mostly on the superb Decca label. Best wishes

Feel awkward after watching the version of Liceu 1990 where Placido Domingo and Agnes Baltsa appeared as fantastic Samson and Dalila. As time goes by, things have been changed a lot. The modern style of 'Samson and Dalila' is actually not matched well with the Samson story based on the old testament. Both singers acted to deliver the feeling well, though. Thanks.
One cannot always refer to the past! Agnes BALTSA and Placido DOMINGO were wonderful in these characters but GARANCA and ALAGNA are also stunning in that aria, in a different way.

No! Tutta questa immobilità ingessata e inespressiva non ha senso in una scena di seduzione . Ancor meno seducente la vasca da bagno e tutto l'ambiente stupidamente moderno , a cui mancava il tocco di un bel Water accanto alla vasca ! Le voci sono belle ,soprattutto quella del mezzosoprano, ma la troppa ieraticità le rende fredde e senza anima ! L'orchestra ? Senza infamia e senza lode , anonima !. Personalmente, ma ognuno può controllare da sé , non ho mai sentito nulla di più emozionante e perfettamente calato nel senso del dramma , della stessa aria cantata da due straordinari cantanti e attori che sono : Shirley Werrett e Jon Vickers ! Loro sì " Sansone e Dalila " da brivido !

Samson et Dalila, a compelling biblical story, poorly staged by a sick minded producer. Why do respectable opera theaters allow this trashy production be staged at all? The biblical sense is completely lost by this nonsense staging. Thank to Garanca and Alagna for saving the night from complete chaos.
Dalila & Samson's duet is one of the most beautiful in whole opera art, but, at the same time, it's one of the most difficult from harmonizing point of view. A very fine tuning is required. Meanwhile, it seems, the staging director and these two artists, have never heard about the insidiousness of this duet (which has long been known) and, as a result, we hear an awful cacophony on the scene when they start to sing simultaneously... Just listen to the performance of this duet by the old masters and compare with this one. E.g. listen how nicely is harmonized here. James King, Christa Ludwig "Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix" - TH-cam Heaven and earth...
Hélàs la direction musicale ne demande que sa puissance à Mme Garanca. Dommage à mon avis pour le rôle. Sur YTube il y a l'interprétation de Jessye Norman en 1987 sous la direction de Michael Schonwandt (orch nat de France) et aussi celle de Lauris Elms en 1967 avec Raymond Mcdonald (Samson) en Australie je crois ... qui m'envoie plein ciel. Là ce sont les costumes qui sont cocasses, mais aucune importance.
You are almost right, the Vickers, Verrett version is one of the best in the history of Opera, that cannot be compared. And the musicality and intensity and the personality of Vickers and Verrett can hatdly be reached. But this Garanca version is at least a good version, no t for eternity but ok. :)
