    I have a Sony A7rii . It has a better sensor better AF and ibis. I always pick up my TL2 first. It’s just special. It is more fun period. Thanks for articulating that experience so nicely.

      I had two A7Riis and a 7Riii and higher resolution and IBIS aside had no advantages plus far worse colour. The reason I finally gave up on Sony, at some cost. I far prefer using and get ‘better’ images from the TL2.

    Excellent presentation!!! A real pleasure to see this kind of content. Thanks for sharing. I think that Leica has such a large image that we forget all those discussions about the number of focus points, megapixels, etc. We do not need to discuss that with a Leica in our hands, it's romantic, it's poetic, It is an icon. Greetings as always from Argentina!

    Had a rough couple of years so I only have the Leica T. But with the recent firmware updates it is actually a very good camera. I can’t wait to see what Leica will do with this system in the future, even tho I doubt I’ll be part of it if they don’t bring manual focus back. Thanks for one of the most amazing reviews I’ve seen period. If anything it reminded me what it is I love with Leica - and photography.

    You're quickly becoming my favourite photography resource here on TH-cam. Skillful presentation, knowledge and style.
    Three cameras that made me the most excited to take photos: Ricoh GR2, Leica M240 and Leica M3. The CL looks as though it would usher in that same enthusiasm.

    The sound quality is superb in this video. Your slow and low style and well articulated way of talking yields itself to an ASMR-style calm to this whole video. You had me captured from the first lines. Leica has been on my radar for so long and maybe these models might be the first step.

    Matthias Burling’s excellent piece on the T convinced me to pick one up since its price dropped like a stone post tl2. With the firmware update the autofocus actually works pretty well. Just have the 23mm F2. V enjoyable. Xe-3 cured me of any desire for the CL. Cheers mate, great job as always.

    Hugh, I’ll start by saying my road to Leica was through the Fuji X100. In my opinion that is the camera that put APSC on the map but also put an extremely compact, seriously competent digital camera. I’d suggest that without the X100 the CL and even the Leica Q don’t exist, but that’s my view and I’m biased.
    It’s through the X100 that I realized what APSC can produce, so we’re definitely on the same page there.
    The X100 led me to a Leica Q, which at the time from a pure mental decision I’d have gone to the XE-3 with a Fuji 16mm f1.4 lens, but I instead went with my heart and migrated toward the Leica Q.
    So now I’m a Leica lover so I can totally relate to your penchant for the German factory.
    So in this long winded diatribe I wanted to ask what your thoughts are with respect to which is the best lens mated to the CL in the 24-35mm range?
    I’d prefer compact over larger lenses, but paramount is what your belief is the best Leica rendering lens.
    I could even be swayed toward the 35mm f1.4. I’m not hung up on auto focus so an M lens can be an option. If you had to choose one lens for the CL, what’s your favorite?
    Thanks in advance.

      ridecycling Thanks for sharing such a lovely “origin” story! Short answer: the Summicron TL 23/2. Incredibly light, small and optically superb. It was the first lens I got for the CL. The SECOND one was the Summilux TL 35/1.4. But depending on your taste and budget, the beauty is you could also go Sigma 16/1.4. It’s very good.

    • @ridecycling
      @ridecycling 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hugh, Thanks so much for that. That sounds like a good starting point. The 23mm would be a good starter.
      My first SLR was a Nikon FE and I ran around with a 105 f2.8 for probably 3 years before I got a second lens and as you know you build up ‘POV memory’. But I’m generally a wider angle guy today- 28mm works for me.
      I absolutely adore my Leica Q. It’s a pretty darn near perfect camera. People talk about Leica being a luxury brand and way too expensive, but as you know too well once you get a sniff of that Leica look, it’s hard to go anywhere else. Do I sound like a snob for saying that, but I really do feel that at its best, the Leica lens is pretty hard to beat.
      I liked your comment regarding fast Leica lenses in that you don’t care about bokeh effect rather the control that one has in shinning the focus of the subject. Fast Leica lenses do that so well.

    Your timing was excellent. My CL arrived today and the plan is for it to compliment my M10. I love my M10 but I wanted something to take on trips that my husband could operate or a stranger if we want a photo of my husband and I. I got the L-M mount adapter and am really looking forward to using my M-Glass as well as the L Mount lenses. I couldn’t agree more with you’re review. If a photographer is more concerned with the raw specs and features then these aren’t the cameras for them. I’ve had Nikon and Sony cameras, and I still use a Sony A7sii for video work (with Leica glass) but I always have a stronger emotional response to the photos from my Leica’s. They just have that quality that’s hard to pinpoint. When I got my first Leica my husband thought I was nuts. Then he saw the first photos and immediately said “I think I get it now.” Can’t wait to start playing with my newly arrived CL!

    Thank you for your review. You hit it out of the park regarding these 2 cameras. As you clearly stated, different people have different styles of shooting. I sold my Olympus Em1 and its 7 lenses because all of those menu options drove me nuts. Yes, the images were great, but I wasn't excited to shoot as I would have to reorient myself with all the damn menus. It was easier to shoot with my iPhone 8 plus. I did a lot of research on the Q, which I rented, but did not like just having a fixed 28mm lens. I went to Leica Soho to check out the CL. Again, those damn menus. I wanted an easy to use camera. I got the TL2 with the 35mm and 60mm lens. I couldn't be more happier. Love the user interface. Not that I'm into the iPhone menu, it's just easy to use. Nothing wrong with that. I know for the amount of $ I spent, I could have bought the greatest Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fuji, etc. However, I would still be back to those damn menus. I'm 55 years old and started shooting when I was a teenager. It was easier, set Aperture, ISO, and shutter speed, done. Pretty much the same thing I do with the TL2. Love it.

    Hi. I am contemplating on getting the TL2 with the 18mm lens. Do you think it's still worth buying at $1.4k USD? A pre-owned set with the lens and EVF. Or just buy a Fuji XE4? I plan to use it to take photos of my bikes and probably bring along during trips. I own a X100, and a Ricoh GRiiiX. Thank you in advance.

    I'm not a Leica shooter, but rather a Sony RX1 shooter. I've also not been inclined to climb the S-curve into the Leica product line. However, this video is the most well considered, balanced, and articulate statement I've seen on "Why Leica". More and more now, it's about the experience and "feels" of photography-assuming skill, discipline, and art are in play-when it comes to equipment, since technical excellence can be found today all the way down into the mid-market sector. Leica captures the best of this experience better than any other product in the market.
    I didn't think I'd actually watch a 45 minute long video on a product line from a brand I don't follow closely, but-aside from the topic-you caught my attention in the first 60 seconds with the warm, inviting, and well-crafted lighting of the video (one of the best I've seen on a YT video), then reeled me in with a thoughtful approach to the whole topic.
    I really appreciate the acknowledgement at 34:28 of Fuji's work in bringing the emotional quality to images. I feel the same with that lens, and even with the X100 series. I also appreciate bringing up the topic of our connection to the context and environment as a photographer and how it plays into our evaluation of emotional connection. I've rarely seen that acknowledged in discussions in photography.
    Much appreciated for sharing your thoughts on this. Glad the YT engine reco'd this video. Liked and subscribed. :)

    Many Thanks for another great review. I chose TL2 over CL because of the price difference. TL2 is a fun camera but...... whilst its siblings CL and SL support the "exposure preview" on/off selection, it is not the case with TL2. This means TL2 can fire any manual flash but you will not be able to see what you are shooting when you set the A/S/ISO to match your manual flash's power. If you want the pleasure of looking and focusing on what you are shooting, you will have to pay for those very expensive Leica labelled flashes (like Leica SF40). Leica don't make flashes themselves. Leica SF40 is a Chinese made Nissin i40 with add on Leica TTL circuitry. The former is selling at £380 and the latter £78 in the UK. TTL flashs are usually quite unpredictable. Leica TTL is definitely unique and bring the unpredictability to a different level. Paying £300 for a feature that I don't need or use is heartbreaking. Come on Leica, please update your TL2 firmware and add that exposure preview on/off switch to this beautifully designed camera.

    An interesting perspective. I think the CL is a small portable X camera with a TL lens mount designed to slip in a handbag and provide Leica quality and is a natural buy for people wanting a walk around compact. Its not a camera I would consider as I would prefer my Leica X113 with its superb 23mm f1.7 Summilux macro. The X113 is a much more conventional camera that oozes Leica quality; it completely changed my photographic style when I bought it; changes that led to my present kit and images. I see the TL2 as a modular workhorse; a digital back for my legacy lenses and a real performer with my two TL AF lenses. I bought a cheap Leica M to TL adapter from China and converted all my other lenses to Leica M fit. I also added a Leica R to M adapter as Leica R lenses are very cheap and have amazing quality; still looking for a Leica 60mm f2.8 R macro as we speak. Mostly I adapt my Nikkor primes and get a bump up in image quality (I gave up on Nikon digital, the results were too harsh, brash and in your face); in particular my Nikkor 35mm f2D benefits from the gorgeous Leica TL2 monochrome image quality. I think Victor of Annie Barton put his finger on it, you want to use and wear a Leica, it is an experience rather than just a machine. The only problem with the TL2 is that when I go out I always seem to pick up my Panasonic GX9 (now fitted with grip) and one of my stunning MFT primes. We live in exciting times; the 2020s will be fully electronic and I think quality will be a driver, particularly with glass; I always choose the lens and then the camera body follows. The law of precedence tells us, the most important thing is the lens followed by the shutter and then the sensor/preamps/processor. I think manufacturers have taken the wrong turn with lenses so I will chose mine very carefully indeed. What, you cant see why shutter? Try using a 14-140mm superzoom on a GX7 and learn to live with shutter shock; the new shutter on the GX9 is fantastic as is the one in the TL2 ;-)

      Vici Martynov Have been wondering about the R glass. What would your top 3 bang for the buck - and heart - recommendations be for legacy Leica glass on the TL2?

    • @RaduChelariu
      @RaduChelariu 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions Forgive me for stepping in, but, for one of a few occasions, I feel I may bring some value to the conversation.
      The R glass, having been imagined, built and optimised for the age of DSLRs, is remarkable in the Leica world for being ever so adaptable to modern systems (even Nikon, with some elbow grease involved). I'm reminded of the famed wide angle smearing and fuzziness one can find when adapting M glass; on a Sony A7* for example. None of these issues plague the R stable, expansive as it is. I own just two of them, but have tested a handful more. The 50mm Summicron-R (1 cam) I own was made in Canada but for all intents and purposes speaks German and calls Wetzlar home. The 250mm Telyt-R - my other R glass - while not as sharp wide open as the Summicron, is a wonderful performer, although at 1.4kg (3lbs) is a workout in itself.
      Both of them are stellar on my A7II. The Summicron wide open, although suffering from some - but not awful - chromatic abberation wide open (honestly superb for a lens that was built in 1964) has become my go-to lens for most situations.
      Yes, R glass is cheap. Well ... "Leica-cheap". That is, when comparing same focal lengths and apertures to their M counterparts. But they are not actual cheap. A 19mm Elmarit-R v1 will set you back $1500. The same 19mm v2 goes for $2500. There are no Noctiluxes (or is it Noctilii?!) and most focal lengths over 180mm require a sherpa to haul around.
      That being said, and to make a long point even longer, I urge you to pick up *any* R lens. There are very few disappointments in their roster and for those their price will reflect it.

Just been honing photo skills thru trial an error, first with an Olympus TG-3 (2014- then gifted it to my son) and now a TG-5 (2017 to present). I'm keeping the 5. It's a good (and unbreakable) camera, perfect for camping, but has photographic limits. I've always dreamed of having a Leica. Now that I have the nickels saved up, I'd like to make the transition from good to great. Thanks for breaking this down so nicely. If I have any money left over after this, I'll buy one of your shirts. Just one question: how long should I wait for that "just a matter of time" thing? The German made Leica X Type 113 including 23 mm lens can be had for lens than 1500.00 US The imaging is true Leica 16 mp sensor with a pretty fast and sharp German made lens. Its a beautiful camera and a steal for the money. It does many things very right. and is the right size for street. better than the Q in that regard IMO

    Wonderful review as always. The CL piqued my interest BUT...the rumor of the upcoming Q-sized interchangeable FF system made together with Panasonic, has me worried I will have a bad, bad case of GAS. Especially if the new Leica will have weather sealing and smallish AF primes (think Fuji's F2 WR Fujicrons)-- which are so alluring when combined with the X-Pro2's sexy rangefinder styling.

    love your review and discussion. just a comment: if you are reviewing recent Leica camera history, i think you are leaving out the Leica X series as a significant predecessor to the T/TL/CL series. the X cameras have similar rendering, which is signature and beautiful. doesn't really matter though, your video is still great!

    Yes, you will see a large difference in image quality. A Leica TL2/CL system will have a much WORSE image quality than an equivalently priced system from Sony, for instance.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting - I understand why you'd say so, and in some scenarios I'd agree: the sensors in the $2,000 a7 III or $3,000 a7R III are technically superior in terms of high ISO noise and dynamic range to the sensor in the two Leicas. But would you agree that these are not the only criteria by which one judges an image, and that "much worse" in the real world is open to debate? Thanks for joining the convo!

    • @marianpalko2531
      @marianpalko2531 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions The Leicas will have worse image quality than the A73/A7R3/A7R2, with regards to all of the contributing factors. This is a fact. Now, you might naturally prefer the design/ergonomics/user interface of the Leicas. They might inspire you more to go out and shoot etc... However, on that account, the M has even more of that Leica mojo.

    • @paullefko

      Marian Palko I actually have to respectfully disagree, I find and so do the members of our Los Angeles based photographic group in which we all shoot different cameras, when presented with images from Leica including those from the TL2, the group is astonished at the result achieved, technical, aspects aside. When it comes to print, the Leica images are .... extraordinary. Hold that thought .
      The Sony is a different type of purpose built camera, they are made for speed and ease of image acquisition as their primary goal. Leicas are slower, they are meant to encourage the user to be more Hands on with the image capture. Moreover Leica bodies,lenses and sensors seem for me, to produce a more pleasing, and detailed image, with greater tonal color range.

    Because I live about 200 miles away from the nearest Leica store, I ordered a CL on the web. OMG when it arrived I thought they had put the wrong camera in the box. I thought it was a Panasonic, it feels cheap and hollow, and the GX9 I used to have felt just as good. Not in the same league as even the Q and the M's are, well feel like they are made by a prestigious company. No way IMO is the CL worth over 3K!

    The TL2 is an ugly camera. Self conscious and over thought, the kind of thing a Bond villain would pull out to photograph 007's demise. Truth is all Leica's smaller sensor cameras, with the exception of the M8, predict a use and a user for whom taking great photographs is a distant second to how the thing slips from their tailored pockets.
    The Barnacks are a functional masterpiece in comparison to the gratuitous TL2 and only slightly less arch CL.
