    That photo of Helen Blackwood was extraordinary. Truly haunting. Even though photography had been around for about twenty years in 1853, it was still in its primitive stages. The detail and expressiveness of the portrait is almost a masterpiece for its time. I'd love to know the circumstances of when and where the photo was taken.

    What a sad story. Helen was defending herself by hitting him with a chamber pot. If they had just left it with that, they would've been ok. The young boys saw that she had hit him in self defense. But robbing him when he was down and throwing him out the window sealed their fates. And Ann getting a lighter sentence was not right at all, she was just as guilty. And marrying at the gallows, what a bizarre love story.
    And I would love a live stream video from you! I love the older mysteries that you bring to us, and would be fascinated to know how you found all these old stories. ❤

    What a sad case... I've researched a bit on 19th century slum housing, as some of my great-grandparents grew up in housing like this. As far as I know they never fell foul of the law, but it was a very hard life that we cannot imagine. I would be interested in a live stream, though I'm not on YT all the time; I guess it would be posted up afterwards.

    Great case! I must admit to being glad that they were able to marry at the last moment. When folks are forced to live like animals to survive, it's hard not to feel sorry for them when they act like an animal. Them marrying was like a last statement of dignity and humanity. And of course, I would enjoy a live stream to learn a bit about the only fellow on youtube who puts out shows that I never miss and always look forward to. I confess that I do enjoy thinking of you as Mr. Case, lol. Thanks for another great brief case!

      That's very rude to animals. Wild animals keep their dens nice and clean (except for bears, which are very huminoid when you think about it) Overcrowding creates high stress. My neighbor wakes me up at 5:00 and 8:00 every single day. If I could hit her over the head with a chamber pot I would. Anyway, animals act much more fair and noble than humans

    • @hollymorris785
      @hollymorris785 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@lazyhomebody1356 I do take your point about the wild animals, and I suppose that caged animals would be a better reference, which would apply to the overcrowding as well. That's really what I mean. You can't expect that people will hold themselves to your society's standard while living cheek by jowl in squalid conditions, struggling for daily survival. Your chamberpot line gave me laugh😸

    • @hollymorris785
      @hollymorris785 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cruisepaige Oh! I absolutely agree and am sorry if I gave that impression. I myself have been a poor, not-criminal my whole life, lol. Rural poor, though. I can only imagine how awful it was in Scotland at that time, but I'm sure the majority of people were law-abiding. I also think that there were a lot people who were treated so poorly over their entire lives that they lost a lot of their humanity. I can't stop thinking about those poor boys, parents dead, and the only one willing and able to house them was a thieving prostitute who let them sleep under her bed!!? I wish history told us how their lives turned out.

It's what sets you apart from the rest, and the time and attention to detail, and research is also just fascinating, how you find details from so long ago, right down to the time and day, and the background of a city and the victim. So beautifully presented, and eloquently narrated. Thank-you, and please keep doing what you do, it's so very interesting and appreciated, thank-you Mr Brief Case!!! ☺️💞

    Brilliant presentation, as always! Cheers for another fascinating case with a wicked twist at the end to boot. My great great grandparents left Glasgow for Belfast once it started getting more people, mid 1700’s. I’ve inherited the estate in Belfast and Glasgow, both are gorgeous but I couldn’t imagine that many living in such a small area. The Estates are outside the city on many hectares but my great Nana and papa would tell me stories of not going into the city for months at a time. Servants would go, find pleasant lodging and stay to collect what was needed. I wrote down all they’d tell me, I found each story so fascinating and intriguing. I’m all for a livestream BUT only if you’re comfortable with it and it doesn’t interfere with your daily life.

    She’s quite beautiful. Reminds me of my mom when she was younger.
    Strange their companion had her sentence overturned. It was a terrible life that none of us, with our many comforts, could begin to imagine. I cannot judge them so harshly for searching his person for valuables. These people were literally starving.
    So many years later, it’s impossible to say what killed the man; self defense or the fall.
    I’m not making excuses for the perpetrators. I’m only saying we are judging them from our phones or laptops, likely well-fed and not jammed 5-7 people in one small room. It’s sad that what was likely the best moment in both of their lives was followed in seconds by the worst.

    There is no way that the story of the two children and the "girl" how watched them through the door aligned so perfectly without police dictating a narrative. More plausible to believe that she hit him with the chamber pot and he fell and hit his head on the rock which killed him. They freaked out and tossed him out the window. Still guilty but probably not have been sent to the gallows.

    Well now...I must say I'm in agreement with the jury's original decisions regarding guilt and that Ann getting away with what she did doesn't sit right with me. She was as culpable as the gentleman who told them to toss him off the balcony. The marriage reminds me that even back then, there were "crazy stunts" people would be involved in when infamous. It isn't only the rich who have their quirks and eccentricities! They sure did make a name for themselves! 😂 "You may now kiss the bride." THUD!

    A stream seems harder as you have so many fans from all over the world, and so many times zones, so how do you choose a time that works?!? Not that I wouldn't be all over the rewatch! So if you do a stream, maybe you could open a community page first and take questions there as well, so if we miss the stream we still have a way to submit questions or comments? But it's your channel, so you do you Brief Case, and however you choose to include us fans is a welcome prospect. Wishing all who may see this a radically positive, safe and healthy week.🙏🖤✌️
