- How to Custom Paint Air Force 1's Tutorial
Hey cuties, in today's video, I explain step by step how I custom paint shoes. In this case, I'm about to customize Nike Air Force 1's (AF1). This tutorial is pretty in-depth but it should be easily digestible. Because they're leather, these steps are a little different than if you paint on a shoe like Vans (which usually consist of canvas material. Either way, a lot of the steps are the same but the preparation is a little different.
As you can see, it's a pretty basic design with color blocking. This shoe still took around 5 or 6 hours total so make sure you are patient with the process to get the best results.

If you have any questions, comment below!
hi!
can i use any acrylic paint? can i use apple barrel acrylic?
does modge podge work as a finisher?
can i use regular nail polish remover as acitone?
Hello! Yea you can use any acrylic including apple barrel. Just make sure you prep the surface correctly. And I probably wouldn't use mod podge but I know they have a bunch of different kinds so you may be able to use that brand, if you find the right one. And as someone who has never painted their nails before, I'm not sure what the ingredients are in there but if it's acetone, that should work as well. To be honest I feel like buying acetone might be cheaper than nail polish remover but then again, don't know much about nails. Hope this helps!
Randeeezy13 thank you !
nattie 2707 of course! Good luck on your next piece!
Hey , i have painted my black af1 white I'm getting brush strokes , how can i fix that???
literally the best tutorial i have ever watched in my life, ty so much
Here’s what I learned
-use acetone first
-clean paint brushes
-take your time you don’t want it to look booty
-don’t go in a tsunami
PSA - I've never gone in a tsunami so I'm not completely sure
when you said 2-3 hours my face went 😳 it’ll probably take longer since this is my first time too 😭. thanks for the tips!
Haha well better than rushing it! But I would say I'm on the slower side haha but good luck! 😊
Thank you so much for this video! I am customizing shoes for my boyfriend's brother and I have been scrolling through your comments for any other questions others have asked. I almost used fabric paint! but now I know to use normal acrylic paint as long as I prep well. Your video was very educational, thank you for helping me with my present!
Of course! Glad I can help! You're gonna kill it 😊
thank you so much for not speeding through the painting process. seeing it in real-time is extremely helpful!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! 🥲
only 88 SUBS????!! MAKE THIS MAN FAMOUSS
Love that 😘
No idea why you only have less than 300 subs. Straight forward tutorial and advice which is great and your painting/finish is clean af. I've been watching quite a few tutorials lately as I'm going to paint a pair of AF1 for myself but some people with like 100K+ views and their end product is so messy lol... blow my mind. You have earned a new sub dude! Keep up the great work.
Thanks I appreciate it ❤️ just need to post more haha
thank you so much for this!! painting the swooshes on my high top AF1’s with Angelus paint and this video was everything I needed! ☺️
I'm glad I can help! Good luck on your customs!
Great video. You've been really helpful! I can start painting my own shoes now :)
Glad I could help!
Thank you so much I was wondering why my paint didn’t look as stable when I put it on my shoe very helpful
Glad I can help 💙
so if i wanted to continuously paint, clean, and repaint my forces, would i skip the acetone and finisher step to get the paint to come right off after i paint them?
Yea don't finish them cause then it'll be harder to take off
Thank you I watched a lot of videos and yours was completely straight forward and I’ve learned so much. Thank you so much.!
Glad I can help!
i know this was posted a long time ago but i just wanted to say thank you , you and a few others on here inspired me enough to actually wanna try this .
You should go for it!! It’s a fun process!
@@RandellKanemaru im def going to , im waiting for black friday and gonna get me all the stuff i need off angelus , from what i found from years past they usually have 20% off everything and ima get the airbrush set up off amazon.

The tsunami part tho!😂 Anyways, this was really helpful 👍🏽
Hehe thanks I'm glad!
This was very helpful my co-workers son is in love with the American flag and he wanted some nikes with the flag on them for the 4th of July but since it is to late and no one had them with the flag on them this year I am thinking of making him some for next year
Awesome I hope my video can help with that!!
10/10 video, thankyou for the tips!
yea of course! hope it was helpful!
would i be able to use regular acrylic paint and modge podge? I just want to paint one pair of of my air forces, I don't plan on making this a serious thing..
Sorry for the late reply! I wouldn't recommend modge podge. That's better with like finishing painting cups and vases and such.
Thank you so much! I've actually been planning on using this exact colorway for customizing, so this was very useful!
I’m glad I can help!!
Do you need matte finisher and finisher spray or are they the same thing ? Thank you for your video it was extremely helpful ! X
They aren't the same but you don't need both. Either one works! And thank you I'm glad I can help!
super helpful, thanks for the tips!
😊
Hello sir, I started customising a few shoes I used leather material white shoes and then painted them with acrylic paint but when I applied varnish spray the shoes became sticky. Can you help me with this problem....Please.
Im not sure why they became sticky. That’s never happened to me. Maybe they didn’t dry before you sprayed them?
if i were to paint the “AIR” and the line on the sole do i need to rub acetone and put the finisher as well?
I would to be safe. Midsoles are tough to keep the paint on though!
Hi thank you so you showed us how to do leather and I love it can you show us how to do canvas? Is it a different type of acrylic paint and also a sealer type would you recommend?
Hi! I don't paint shoes too often anymore so I can't show you, but if you're talking about canvas like vans, you need to use a thinner for acrylic paint and make it more watery. You don't need to do as many layers for this, as a couple coats should be good (you won't get as many streak marks with canvas shoes). I hope this helps!
@@RandellKanemaru YES Thank you.
@@Dolldoll100 of course! Good luck!
A Question: what happens if I dont use acetone. I just paint directly on the shoe? will it still work?
Nahh the paint will chip quickly and then you'll have to start all over :(
Hello, I did some of my own and I followed this tutorial and unfortunately the paint has cracked around the crease on the side. Do you have any tips on how I can fix this please? :)
Unfortunately I don't 😞 I can look some up and see if they work! I've been really busy with work so I haven't been able to do any of this for a while
I saw one video from one of the artist on the Angelus TH-cam page, he said to use sand paper for the areas that creases when doing your prep work, and this will help with the adhesion of the paint to the leather.
Is angelus “leather prep and deglazer” just acetone? Or should one spring for the product?
I would just get acetone! It’s cheaper
Um idk if im asking too late but do i still have to use acetone or a preparer and deglazer to prep a old skool van shoe?
Nahh for vans you don't since the fabric isn't leather
yooo idk if u sell them but i want to so do i wait for a request to buy them or do i buy them and put them up and hopefully someone wears that size
Umm considering I'm broke af I usually wait until I have someone that wants a custom and then I make it. I would take pictures of all your designs and post them on reddit or websites you can sell them for a fee. I think custom movement is one of the more popular ones you can do that on! That way they can buy the size of a design and you can build a portfolio that way. Hope that helps and good luck! 😊
Can I clean off the brush with acetone?
You may be able to, but I didn’t I just used water. Water is the safer option imo
I know I am very late, but is that 100% acetone or a different percent acetone?
From my understanding, Klean Strip acetone (the brand I use) isn't pure acetone but close to it. If you want pure acetone probably best bet is to get nail polish remover but will most likely be more expensive.
Would paint pens work when customizing air forces? Or would it come off easily?
I’ve seen people use them! I think the paint should be fine as long as you put a proper finisher on it still
@@RandellKanemaru Thank you! I’m customizing air forces for my uncle and soon to be aunt so I wanna make sure the paint lasts!
Hey, just starting out with customising, could I please ask how long you wait between coats?
Since I usually use a blow dryer, like 5 or 10 minutes. I would be longer if you let it air dry
I subbed for the informational video and I liked for the fact you’re replying to any questions you get even after all this time, thankyou for putting the effort in for that man. I’m about to try painting my swoosh, wish me luck:)
Thank you! 💙 hope you enjoy some of my other vids too! Good luck on your customs and let me know if you have any questions!
@@RandellKanemaru I binged through pretty much all of them last night and enjoyed every one🤣and I painted the swoosh whilst doing so, which went great thanks to you. Thankyou again man
Ayy nice! Glad it turned out well!
Painting mine with these colors it looks dope
Yea these are my fav 😊
Hi i have a colored airforce ones. And i want to paint them. Should and how can i take off the original color(violet)? Or i can just paint them over?
You can't really completely take off the old color. Best option would probably be to use acetone to take as much of the factory finish off and then paint over them
In your experience, how well does paint hold on the soles? I wanna paint some all white Court Visions but idk if the paint will stick to rubber. Thanks!
What if u sanded it down just a little to make it rough so the paint would stay on it
Unfortunately the paint doesn't hold up well on them :( I'm not too sure how to prep/paint/finish them to make them last a while
My soles have held the paint when I painted them so idk
@@GalaxyEnixix idk how it usually rubs off fast
@@simmsluva9924 paint hasn’t worn off yet for me 🤷♀️
Hey ! Good vidéo very helpfull.. but just one thing... no one talks about quantity of paint for an AF1 pair. For the light blue part, if we going to do 4/5 layers, how much paint do i need ? 1oz it's enough or 4oz is better ? Thanks !
1 ounce should be plenty. The layers are very thin so a little can go a long way!
nice work ill be taking somme of your points in making things work for me. Tha
nk you
I bet your shoes will turn out great!
How do you not get brushstrokes, I’ll do 8 coats and still see it
Just try and do thinner coats evenly across your whole canvas, and make sure it dries. For the first couple coats, don't expect it to be anywhere near a clean coat, there will still be some of the base color showing through by how thin the layer is
@@RandellKanemaru do you have to wait for the paint to dry before applying the finisher? If so, how long should you wait (without using a hair/blow dryer)
I would wait a couple hours at least. Lightly touch it with your hands to see if it's dry after that long. If it is then you can use the finisher!
Yes I would recommend. And a couple hours should be good!
Can I customise my red white shoes? Like cover the red with another colour? I doubt it will not work
Yea you can! You may just have to paint more coats on, especially if you're trying to cover it up with a lighter color
cool! thanks for the reply, anyway great video! :)
Do u ever get fibers or small clumps while brushing over or layering paint?
Only thing I really get are brush strokes. When that happens, you have to put on more clean, thin, smooth layers. I don’t get fibers and small clumps unfortunately
@@RandellKanemaru ok thank u
This is so helpful! But one question, would nail polish remover work in place of the acetone?
Thank you! And yes that would work!
@@RandellKanemaru ok awesome! And also would sharpies work for drawing on some of the shoe?
It would work but to be honest it doesn't look that good. I would use a finer tip paint brush instead. It's hard to paint thin clean lines so you could practice on canvas or something before using a shoe but I would advise against a sharpie. My first ever video I used sharpie on the vans and it didn't turn out good Imo
@@RandellKanemaru ok thanks!
Good luck! ❤️
If you buy shoes that already have some color on them because you want to paint other areas, will acetone hurt those color areas?
Yea it’ll fade the color. You can still paint over them. If you don’t want acetone to get on it, I would tape over it
I think the hardest part about this is I have adhd and I dont wanna ruin my shoes lmao
@Jet Pistol420 it’s a good experience
Yea it takes a lot of patience :/
Nice video, I'm a newbie!
Thank you! I hope this helps a lot!! Let me know if you have any questions!
I've seen other videos where they add duller to the paint is that necessary, and whatw the difference if there's any. Thank you in advance
It's not necessary, but duller makes the paint "less shiny"? More matte I guess? The best way to describe it is that it "full" the color of the paint lol but it depends on what kind of look you're going for! Most colors on shoes are of the "dull" variety
Do I need to use acetone on the soles? I am attempting to paint the bottom side areas as well. I want my shoe to have the "all over" pained look.
I don’t know if that’s good or bad. I’ve never painted the soles I’m sorry :/
Do you recommend beginners to use tape to tape off?
yea always!
Is it possible to blend the pale blue with some white and make a pastel-ish blue color?
To be honest I have no idea, I'm colorblind and idk how colors work. Best bet is to try to mix a little bit of what you think works and then make small changes from there. Sorry about that!
I live in UK. Can I wear the shoes in rainy whether after painting? Will the rain ruin the shoes?
I personally wouldn’t but if you do the finishing coat correctly, they should be good under light conditions
@@RandellKanemaru Thanks for the response.
does it always have to be white shoes? Can I paint on black for example? Would 2 coats cover black?
You can paint on black! But you'll probably need way more than 2 coats since the black will be harder to cover
Good video, very informative
Thanks I appreciate it!
Can you use nail polish remover to prepare the shoe?
Yes you can!
What did you mix the paint with at the start was that a cup of water to thin out the paint?
I'm sorry I don't remember it's been a while :(
Hey Randell , what type of brushes were you using in this video ? If you don't use the same ones now, What do you use now? Im trying to find good brushes, What's the best type of brush to use that does its job well.
To be honest I'm not that paint brush savvy, but I do believe better brushes are a better investment if you're going to use them often. But it comes down to how well you take care of them (cleaning then after every use, positioning the brushes, etc.). With that said, I'm pretty sure I just bought a variety pack from Angelus and a couple fine point brushes from there as well and they do the job well for me!
@@RandellKanemaru thank youuuuu
Of course 😊
To make paint stick 'like a pro' we should use a fine sandpaper ,start with 400 than 800 and finish with1600 grit
Just be careful of the stitches

Thanks, I was just about to mention that I seens someone say to use deglazer, then sand and repeat a few more times... Idk why ppl don't mention these important steps but I was wondering, what if I only have 80 grit sand paper? Would it still do the job or should I just wait?
Can you use any acetone or does it have to be a certain one because when I search it up it comes up with nail polish remover
It can be any. Nail polish remover works too

wow this is quite the comment :')
so the finisher does act as a waterproof? and would you acetone the bottom non-leather the "---AIR----" if you were to paint it ?
Somewhat...I would say it's more water resistant than water proof. I wouldn't abuse it with weather to make them last as long as possible. As for the AIR logo, I wouldn't recommend painting the midsole as it doesn't last as well but if you do I would use acetone to clean it off.
So my issue is paint peeling once I try to wear them outside for the first time. Do I need to sand them before prepping them with acetone and then letting that dry to start painting them. Help! I literally own the whole collection and don’t want the paint to be o to waste
Yea you need to get the factory coating off so acetone the top very well. No need to sand paper cause it's not plastic. After you paint your shoes, make sure you put a finisher on it to protect the paint!
@@RandellKanemaru I use acetone and then I paint and then I use angelus finisher. I used regular acetone at like the dollar store, do I need to use a stronger acetone from somewhere else? Also do I need to buy a waterproof protector spray just to add on just in case. I would hate to give away or sell a pair of shoes that don’t last. I think that’s why I’m so scared to fully do this as a side business.
Would I use angelus leather preparer and deglazer instead of acetone?
You can use either
Either should work fine!
Thanks man trying to customize my first air forces and i would of failed really badly if it wasn't for you thanks man
Glad I can help! :)
So can I just apply the acetone on parts I want to paint? I just wanna paint my swoosh haha
i have the same quastion i only want to paint the toebox
Yea that should be fine! You would just need to put finisher on that part as well
Hi how many layers? Honestly, do you put in your shoes 3 or 4 and in between how long do you want the shoes dry?
For leather, it depends but usually like 5-7. I do enough thin layers so until it's a solid color and streak marks don't show. I usually leave them to dry for a couple hours, and I sometimes use a blow dryer to speed up that process. But make sure you're moving the dryer the whole time! You don't want to burn/melt the paint!
@@RandellKanemaru Thank you 😊
How much would all of these supplies cost? Minus the AF1s.
If you only use brushes, like 50 bucks or so. If you buy a spray gun, a lot more like a couple hundred
Hey man, how much angelus paint do you think I’ll need to paint an dunk low size 8 like the university dunks?
Very small amount. One ounce bottle can be used to paint a dozen
what do you do if you want to use marker paints? Can you use White for a base then begin painting?
I've seen other people use them so I'm sure they work fine! I've never used them though
Is there anything else I can use what I might have at home instead of deglazer
You can use acetone to take off the factory seal
Is it possible to mix the colours and make a new one or is it better to buy all the colours separatel? For example am I able to make pint if I mix white and red or it won't turn out good???
Yea you can definitely mix! But I would suggest you start mixing with very very minimal paint to try and get the tone you want. If you get to a point where you like the color, keep adding a little at a time. This helps you from wasting too much paint by mixing some together and it not being the color you want. But yea you can also buy if there's a mixture that matches exactly what you're looking for!
@@RandellKanemaru Thank u so much, very helpful! Love ur work :)
Thank you I appreciate it ❤️
Hey I just saw your vid! Glad I came here. Do we always need to have a thinner mixed with the paint? Or nor really?
It would help but not necessary per se
What kind of paint should I use to fix my air force ones ? The orange on them is fading on the side
Angelus products always seem like everyone's go-to!
what if i were to wash the shoes would the paint come off?
To be honest, I've never washed them after painting. All used shoe cleaner and it worked fine though!
hello! Im planning on customizing my af1 Nike logo and using the matte finish on it but I've heard people were saying that it makes it shiny. Do you think it would be okay just using the matte finish on the Nike logo? Or should I use some duller. Anyway the video helped👍
You can always start out with some duller mixed in. If it’s too dull you can use some matte finish without the duller to make it shinier
how do I know if I removed all factory finish, does the shoe feel and look slightly different?
It will feel more rough. Not as smooth as how it comes out of the box. It may look slightly drier too
@@RandellKanemaru thanks man
Can it be any acrylic paint or ones specific for shoes please?
Pretty sure you can use any acrylic paint! I would just do a Google search on a certain brand you're looking for to see if it's good for you shoe material.
Can you use any acetone or does it have to be specifically the one you have?
Nahh any works!
@@RandellKanemaru Awesome thank you so much!! Also I’ve noticed other painters tend to sand the shoes down if that makes sense. Do we have to or can we just use the acetone and get started on painting?
Of course! Also I only sand down if it’s a certain material (like baseball/football cleats that have somewhat of a plastic feel to them). That’s because the paint doesn’t adhere to that. If you’re just painting in leather, just acetone and you’re good to paint!
@@RandellKanemaru Awesome thank you so much! I appreciate your quick responses!! :)
Of course! Good luck with your shoes! 😊
Can i use tarrago geglazer instead of acetone? Or there's a big difference?
To be honest I'm not sure what that is :/ if it's a deglazer it's *usually* different but I'm not sure in this case I'm sorry 😭
What’s up bro! I painted my AF1 following your instructions, and it’s good so far! But the first time that I use it the new paint started to crack. Did I do something wrong?
Hey man! Usually when the paint cracks, it means that the factory coat wasn’t cleaned off enough (the acetone part).
Also, it could just be from wear and tear. I painted some Nike slides and they started to crack because the leather started to stretch. It doesn’t mean you did something wrong, but sometimes depending how you wear them, it just starts to crack I think :(
@@RandellKanemaru thanks bro! I’ll try to clean up better with acetone and repaint the area cracked!
Good luck!! :)

Nahh should be fine! Just make sure you put finisher on those parts too!
@@RandellKanemaru thanks man appreciate it!
Of course! Hope your customs go well!
Which paint should I use to customize nike mid blazer ‘77?
If they're leather you can use the same that I use! The Angelus leather paint. For something softer, you can still use them but you need to thin it a lil bit. Hope that helps!
Can you still put them in the wash when they get dirty or will it affect the paint?
I've never done that. I've used shoe cleaner on them and that works! But make sure you aren't too rough because then the paint could scratch!
Nice. I want to do pink white and black for my daughters shoes
Ooohh that would look sick!
Hey, I bought the normal finisher from Angelus, will this be too shiny? Also if it ended up being too shiny, could I order a matt finisher to go over the top? Video was a lot of help, thanks!
The finisher being too shiny is subjective, but for me personally I like the matte finisher too. If you were to go over with a matte finisher it should dull it a little bit. Thanks for the support!
Can you use modge podge finisher? Or does it have to be the one you showed?
I would try to use one similar to the one I showed. There's alternatives, but I don't think modge podge is a good finisher for shoes
Do you need to use acetone if you have had and worn your air forces for over a year?
Yea you do. But you should clean your shoes with shoe cleaner first to get all the dirt and debris off first, then use acetone
Which paint if im using acrylic would you recommend ? Gloss , matte , or satin ? 😭
It’s personal preference. I liked matte because I wasn’t a fan of the shiny finish that gloss and satin can have, but like I said it’s up to you!
@@RandellKanemaru Bro you responded immadiately I appreciate you so much and I like your preference of matte as well !
Haha yea of course! Just good timing haha
No need to w8 for the dry?? 🤔
After paint directly apply finisher?? May b need to w8 some hour for the dry paint
Yes definitely wait for them to dry!!
how much paint did you use for the light blue section of yours? would it be enough for one pair if i bought a 1oz bottle?
I don't remember how much exactly but one ounce is more than enough for a couple coats for a pair of shoes.
After applying the acetone, is it necessary to use Fabric paint, or can I use normal acrylic paint?
You can use acrylic!

I'm sure you know the white part of those shoes eventually turn yelllw and it makes the shoe just look old and ugly. Do you know what's best to use? I was wondering if I can use the leather paint on the white midsole part for my airmax pluses.
You could use it but I wouldn't recommend painting the midsoles as it tends to wear off faster. I'm not too sure what's the best way to paint that to be honest. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer :(
I used nail polish which has acid tone in it, dos that work to?

What can I use instead of acetone
Nail polish remover is a good one!
How many paints should I buy half the shoe one color and the back half another color
You would be fine with 1oz bottles for each color of you're only painting one pair
