The “Old Man” Test (YIKES!)

- Ever wonder how “old” you really are? Try this simple 2 part test, where you will do something that you do every day (get dressed) except in a different way than you may be right now.
The rules are simple.
Stand on one leg and pick up a sock and put it on your foot. Without letting your foot touch the ground, lean over and pick up the shoe. Put the shoe on and tie it. At this point you may put that foot on the ground.
From here you have to pick up the other leg and balance once again. Lean over and pick up the sock and put it on. Then put on the shoe and tie it.
If you can complete the entire task without losing your balance to the point that the foot in the air makes contact with the ground at all, then this is indicative of the fact that your balance is not where it needs to be and you need some work.
Let me know in the comments how you do.

Hahaha
With age comes wisdom. That being said, I have learned that it is much easier to sit while putting on shoes.
😂
Yeah I like sitting on the bed to put on socks…I prop each foot on the bed frame, leaning forward a little for a nice stretch in the lower back. Sounds really old mannish typing that out :P
Well said. It's like Alexander cutting the Gordian knot instead of wasting time untying it. Experience over fads.😊
I've learned that if you start doing the things that old people do if you don't have to, that soon you will have to.
This test causes old men to break hips.
Only psychopaths do sock-shoe sock-shoe
Facts.
Yeah, fuck this guy. I can barely put on my socks and shoes while sitting.
I think their was a bit on All in the Family about that very thing!
Seems like u never been swimming in the lake
No, I do sock, sock, shoe, shoe as well...
This guy is just weird.
I'm 58 years old. I had major limb saving cancer surgery resectioning my left inner thigh. I'm actually now missing some muscles. I can complete these tests with both legs and do them regularly. I worked very very hard to come back. If I can do it, you can too.
great, thanks for sharing - you are a FIGHTER!!
Excellent.
Bless you brother
I'm 19 and can't do this…damn
Where there is a will there is a way. Congratulations to you. May you have a long healthy and joyous life 🌱
My 16 years old nephew, Gary, couldn't pass the test. I call him Gary old man.
Tell old gary hello
You could also call him Commissioner Gordon
Smooth joke😄 Most wont get it. 🤨
Great laugh this evening.
Needed it. Thank you sir.
Genius, love it!
I'm in my 60's and tried this. I'm getting ready to head to the hospital now.😂
This is NOT an “Old Man Test”. This is coordinated strength engaged front and back in order to maintain upright while mastering daily behavioral activity…… not even most Young Men” could do this without intentional development.
Most young man can't do it because they're unhealhty
Anyone healthy semi-athletic young person can do this no problem
I was waiting for someone to get triggered by this.
By unhealthy you mean unfit???

I'm 69, 260 pounds. I will try this as soon as I can find a matching pair of socks, my shoes and clear out my room from possible injury.

I'm horribly flat-footed - there has literally never been a time in my life that I've had the coordination to do this.
And when we go to physical therapy, the first thing they say is take the shoes off !!!
Your bones are probably caved in but the only solution is walking barefoot on soft ground like grass or sand everyday until your foot muscles get strong enough to form an arch.
I've been expressing this exact test for yrs (15-20)...though mine was 1 side. I'll upgrade to both. I'm 55.

I'm 98. I do this whilst doing a headstand. Gotta keep my mobility up. Thanks Jeff.
Uh. Ok bud. I'm 156 and I do it upside down drunk, smoking a cigarette, and getting beaten with sticks.
I'm 420. Get those numbers up blud
I am older than time itself and in that time I have learned something. If you sit down you can do it with BOTH feet in the air at the same time!
Try doing a cartwheel when you’re 1,000 💪
Cringe engagement farming. Take some. I'm charitable today
I'll do it, I just might pull a back muscle trying to prove to myself that I'm not old.
It's fun to watch the difference in stability of the foot bare vs. shod. Far more control and faster response without the cushioning underfoot.
👍 Very impressive! Now lets see you do that with COMPRESSION SOCKS 😂 🤣
Great call
Had the same thought 🤣😂
Or toe socks.
I broke a finger trying to take off a compression sock!!! Now the freaking finger has 15 degree bent, can't straighten it up!
I’m 49 and just did it but I had to hop a bit on that second leg. Going to try and put my shoes on this way everyday.
This video's bloopers must include great laughs.
47.
Functional Mobility has always been my driving philosophy. Long before it had a name. Long before people had platforms to monetize.
Happy to say, this is absolutely no problem for me.
I'm also 47, and had no problem doing it.
👍
Dude 21 year old zoomers can't do that lmao
Zoomers have no athletic ability because they grew up with cell phones as a dad
And where did you get that data from? Oh sorry, there is no data. You are just talking crap. I am pretty sure 21 year olds can do this especially if they exercise at least 2-3 days a week. Those who can't do it probably don't exercise and are fat. Which means, it all has to do with being healthy for the most part and only some of age. I mean, look at Athlean-X, he was able to do it and he is 48. If 21 year olds couldn't, this guy couldn't either.
You make absolutely zero sense. An embarassment to humanity.
I just tried it 5-6 times and did it every time. Counted one of the tries and it took 20 seconds. I am 24 so I don't know how your comment makes any sense. Whatever helps you sleep at night, I guess. It's all about health and only very little about age.
@@Vik1919 dude you think this is so serious that my comment "helps me sleep at night". all of Gen Z is like this. Nobody knows why except for me.
@@Vik1919 check this spazz out ^ lmfao
meanwhile it's Jeff... did anyone think that he wouldn't do this easily? dude is practically 22 years old..
I’ve had chronic low back pain and spasms for years. I avoided bending my back too far for years, following dr and chiropractor advice. I recently changed my approach and followed “ knees over toes guy’s advice . I’m 59 now and can do it easily 😬.
For those that don't know, the trick to doing something while balancing on one foot is to stare at a single point in front of you. It makes balancing much easier.
I can confirm that.
@@RobertMollers The hardest part of this is balancing .
In the end……falls over bench.
….still old buddy. 😂
48 years old is not considered old age.
Test this again in 17+ years! 😂
Bet in 17 years he can still do it - standing on his head, even.
Well I think it’s old 😅 my husband is 48 and I’m 32, but when I’m 48 I’m gonna be saying it’s Not old too 🤷🏻♀️

Good job Mr Jeff
Old men are too smart to tie his shoes that way.
There are many factors that play into this . At 46 I could do this easily . But now I’m 61 and had a knee replacement and need another one in my opposite leg . Balance and knee strength is everything in this exercise .

The best way to know if you are old... is when you start asking everyone to turn down the music!! 😂
Legend JEFF
As a skateboarder, who has to know how to push on the moving board while maintaining balance with one foot - yeah, it's easy peasy. But at the same time - I can totally understand why this is a challenge for a regular joe. Especially if you're older. It's a good balance exercise.
Yes, easy for us skaters…until the knees are shot and wobble loosely. Cherish your knees, kids. They are what allows for excitement.
Good that Jeff can do this. But this is mostly good balance and mobility, not really about being old. You can easily find 60-70-80+ year old yoga practicioners who can do this, but also you can find 18 year olds who can fail miserably at this, either for lack of balance, or mobility, or both. But statistically speaking, guess who has more years to live, that young guy who fails this "old man" test, or the 60-70+ yoga practicioner who nails it?
Don't let that old man walk into your life.
Hi Jeff, I have a topic I would like to request!
I am a long time subscriber and watch your videos at least 8 times a week.
I’ve heard you mention Peter Atia and so i assume you have read his book Outlive or he even speaks about minimalist shoes in his podcast, and the importance of balance.
As a physical therapist, what is your take on minimalist shoes and the importance of balance, for someone with flat feet? Ever since I read the book I bought myself some zero drop, wide toe box shoes and my toes have noticeably spread out and when can feel an arch in my foot when not pulled by the force of gravity.
Thanks Jeff & Jesse !! My digital gym buddies 🤝
Just turned 60. Still able to do this although I usually don't. Wisdom prevails over youth and enthusiasm.
Not sure I could’ve done this in my 20s and I was an athlete. This is more about balancing on one leg, than anything. Most 20 somethings would fail this test, so we’re all old men
I'm 46, 5'11" and 185...typical dad bod. I did this very easily. I think this is more coordination and balance over anything.
I’m 56, will be 57 next month. Just did it as well. I’m going to continue this for stability
I don't think I have ever tried doing all of that in one step in my life
the "im the boss" pose afterwards improved my abs gains today
Single legged dead lift would be an apt accessory exercise.
The ultimate old man test is for someone to watch your reaction when you fart. If you don't react at all - i.e. if you don't realise you've farted - then you're officially old
I did that no problem in my 20s. I can tie my shoe no problem now since I lost some weight.
My Grandpa was still able to do that into his early 90s. Then one day he said “why” and never put his socks and shoes on without sitting. He could climb trees and ladders with ease. At 100 yrs old he helped in reroof of his house. He also smoked and drank daily into his late 80s. And ate everything except corn and rice. Gone at 103. 😢
I'm soon to be 62, I' m pretty sure I'm in decent enough shape to do this! Will give it a go tommorow! Seems like a good test for your core!
This seems more like an "I spend most of my time making fitness videos" test.
Lowkey having a core workout just with this one.
Old man test keepin you big as hell
I used to do this when I was Jeff's age - can still do it 19 years later. Start young!
If you can't get off the couch without using your hands, it's time to revisit the squat rack after all those years
I’m 18 and can’t do this 😂. Being a distance runner gives you the most inflexible legs and hips in the world.
the ability to stand with stability on one leg after age 50 has very high predictive value for being alive and functional at age 80.
51 years old and do this every day! Truth
Come back after a decade and Jeff still rocking the same pants respect
As a person with a disability, stuff like this fascinates me.
I tie my shoes only once so they are not too tight but no too loose. And never ties them again. So I can put them on right from the go.
This is a balance test, not an old man test. My balance is better at age 65 than it was 20 years ago. Why? I got back into roller skating at age 55.
😂I do this everyday! It’s how I test my core/ balance… I fail some days I pass the test on others…50 is distant memory.. still fighting Father Time
At 48 years of age one should be capable of saying no to this, and put shoes on the normal way.
One of the simplest daily habits to engage in that promotes mobility, balance, and nural connectivity there is.
Sit on the ground cross legged, then stand with only your feet contacting the ground. The more assistance you need/use (e.g. hands, knees, elbows) the closer to the end of life you are...unless you change habits.
Not in my whole life have I been able to balance like that. Not even as a child.
Old man my ass, there are not many people who can do this. Jeff is a well trained therapist. 🍁🍁🍁
Since learning about how important stability is for longevity, this is actually how I do this every day lol it’s kinda neat seeing it as a challenge now
Being old is killing your gains
74 here, and apparently I've been an old man for at least the past 60 years. That said, I know the end is coming sooner rather than later, I know there is no flexion left in my back, no I cannot put on/take off socks without sitting, and my mind is as sharp as it has ever been. I'm living life to the fullest, splurging if the urge hits, traveling as often as I can, I see my kids and family all the time. Life may be short, but it is good while it lasts. And I fully expect to be that old guy being pushed in the wheel chair, oxygen tubes in my nose, as the cruise ship docks in Sri Lanka.
Old man test keeping you big as hell
I'm 55. I make sure I do that everyday. So far so good.
65 and still doing it.
I workout 5 days a week and I sit down when putting on my shoes. I know I am old, no need to do a silly test
I literally do this, and believe that it should be a standardized test for if an individual is physically impaired
Disagree. Not everyone has that good of balance at any age. I was in as good of shape as this man at 20 but wouldn't have been able to do that.
A more realistic test would be untying your shoes and removing your shoes and socks, without sitting down or holding on to anything.
Congratulations, you have graduated into a carer-free retirement.
Ha! I’m 55 and I sprained the shit out of my back cutting the lawn for the first time this year. My back is so sore I have to lay on the couch to put my socks and shoes on.
I'm 19 and I failed this so now I am officially an old man.
This is just a balancing test
I'm 87 years old, I did it...Not old at all!
I cant even put on my sock without falling off the edge of my bed. 😂😂
I like how he puts on the first show and virtually takes a walk around the room before lifting the other foot. Everyone I've seen do this immediately lifts the second foot. Old-ass man. 😂😂😂😂😂
I'm over 60, but I wouldn't have passed this at 20.
Whoa, wait!! 48 is old?!?! I'm 61!! And I'm struggling to get rid of my gut, because my metabolism has slowed down so much!! Just wait till you get to be my age and then you'll say, "What the heck happened to me!!" You get start to feel tired faster and maybe some naps later in the afternoon. 💤 Not fun guys!!
I'm 41 and in good shape but I could never do this even at 25.
As an overweight 51 year old it took me 4 attempts to succeed, but I do have to rest my elevated foot on the other knee to put the sock and shoe on....
Interviewer: "What skills do you have?" Me: does this.
its just a balance & coordination test this is so easy if you do martial arts or gymnastics.
My flexibility is fine. This is a balance test primarily
I couldn’t do that when I was 18, so whoever came up with this up yours!
