The “Dark Side” Of Ozempic (HEALTH PROFESSIONAL EXPLAINS)

  • If you or a loved one has thought about taking Ozempic or any other similar weight loss drugs, you are going to want to watch this video until the very end. Today, I am going to explain what Ozempic is, how it works for weight loss, and what you should consider if you are taking or thinking of taking semaglutide based drugs.
    Ozempic is the brand name for the drug semaglutide, falling under the GLP-1 drug class. Some of these drugs you might know by the name of Ozempic, Wegovy, and Trulicity. These drugs are used to control weight loss in users using a different method than previously applied drugs. Instead of using amphetamine based drugs that essentially “sped up” the calories-out portion of the calories-in-calories-out equation, they are used to control the calories-in portion.
    These new drugs, such as Ozempic, are now manipulating the calories-in half of the equation by controlling appetite at the neurological level as well as delaying gastric emptying to help you feel more full for longer periods of time, again helping to curb appetite.
    For those that need Ozempic medically, this drug has been an absolute game changer. While being able to combat the weight gain that is associated with type 2 diabetes, it is able to do so without the worrying side effects of other drugs.
    I find it common, sometimes even coming from myself, that people are quick to blame someone being overweight for their lack of dedication and effort to combat their severe weight issue. However, that is not always the case - they might be doing the same thing that everyone else is doing in their pursuit of weight loss. The problem is, they could be such a metabolic mess, that despite their best efforts, they just can’t achieve the same results as someone else.
    While the intended use of Ozempic is noble and helpful, the misuse of the drug is rampant. People are running to using semaglutide products such as Ozempic in a pursuit of losing 10 lbs for their upcoming vacation. This has resulted in issues for the people that actually need the drug, namely: a supply shortage along with the price of the drug skyrocketing making it less affordable to those that really need it.
    Now, this brings forward the issue of the unintended side effect of Ozempic and similar weight loss drugs; where is that weight coming from? is it all fat, or is it something more? You might not know this, but a significant amount of weight loss does not simply come from fat stores, but also from lean muscle tissue. This becomes a major problem for anyone taking these drugs and is something that they need to be made aware of.
    In any case of weight loss, there is going to be a portion of that weight that comes from body fat and a portion that comes from muscle as well. However, it is up to you to maximize fat loss while minimizing muscle loss. With drugs like Ozempic, the weight loss is rapid making it hard to control just how much muscle you are losing along with the fat being burned.
    Studies have shown that taking weight loss drugs like Ozempic resulted in a loss of muscle tissue being between 25-35%
    That’s not good.
    In my profession, if I were responsible for someone losing 25-35% of muscle mass, that would be cause for major concern. This would actually lead to the presence of a skinny-fat physique, which is something that is undesirable. Someone who is skinny fat does not have that is lower bodyweight, but does not carry any significant muscle mass.
    The problem with being skinny fat, especially at the end of a weight loss journey, is that there is a limited supply of metabolically active tissue. This means that if you were to resume eating the way you were before, you’d be packing on fat just quickly as you did before you started your path to losing weight.
    The trick? Start strength training.
    The benefit of strength training is that it gives you metabolic forgiveness; the more lean muscle you carry, the less effect food has on you metabolically. You can have that cheat meal without as much worry than if you were not training. If you focus on your efforts in the gym and rely less on drugs like Ozempic, you are helping yourself metabolically, aesthetically, and you are leaving more of the drug available to those that actually need it.
    Make sure to keep watching to the end to hear about how important your nutrition is in your pursuit of weight loss. It can't be overlooked even for a second.

    I'm a 35-year-old guy who started taking Ozempic a year ago because I was on the brink of diabetes. The improvement was immediate-it transformed my life, boosting my energy and self-esteem, which encouraged me to start exercising. This led to a weight loss of 60 pounds!
    Your channel then became my guide on how to exercise correctly, helping me build muscle. Honestly, I've never felt better. Although I still have a journey ahead, my body fat percentage is now 22%, a significant drop from 35% a year ago. My latest blood tests show everything is normal, my glucose levels are excellent, and I'm no longer considered pre-diabetic. So, I completely agree with you! For those who need this medication and are willing to improve their lifestyle, not just use it as a crutch for poor eating habits, it can be a game-changer. You just have to approach it the right way.

      I’m a surgeon and I can tell you that there is huge value to Ozempic and Mounjaro when used with exercise and dietary modification. Studies have shown that both medicines decrease the risk of adverse cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke. There are a number of second generation medicines currently in Phase II trails that are even better than the dynamic duo. Once you reach your desired weight, drop to a maintenance dose and stick with it for life!!!

    I've been on Ozempic for a while. I was prescribed it because my A1C was 8.3 and is now down to 5.0. With that being said, I made the mistake of basically starving myself because I was never hungry. I engage in weight training 5 days a week and while I lost a bunch of weight, I wasn't seeing any gains. Now I force myself to eat high protein meals to build muscles and I don't use the scale as a success indicator, I look at how my clothes fit and what I see in the mirror. If you are just starting to take the drug and do weight and cardio training, be sure to eat!!

    In the past year, I've rotated thru a bariatric clinic and endocrinology as an NP student. It's hard to get people to make lifestyle management changes when they are off the charts, like their Hg A1c is >10-13%, BMI is >50 or 60. I had a patient with a BMI of almost 70 last week, and the typical person at that stage unfortunately needs so much more help than just getting a dietician consult. Meds like semaglutide or tirzepatide can be very useful for these people.

    Thanks for the excellent explanation of these drugs. I am a 5'9", 54yr male that a year ago weighed 230lbs and had an A1C of 12.5. I have been Type2 diabetic for 10 years and was able to control my sugar with diet and taking Metformin. The last couple of years this stopped working. Last March my Dr had me start Mounjaro (similar class of drug to Ozempic). After 6 months, I was down to 175lbs and my A1C dropped to 4.9. Around this time is when I noticed I was not able to do the same physical activity as before. I had lost a lot of muscle mass as well as the fat. After talking with several people from work about "working out", they shared the 1gm of protein per lb of body weight to increase muscle with me. After doing a lot of Youtubing, I found your channel and started learning more about eating right as well as starting body weight exercises. After the last 4 months, I am now down to 165, 13.5% body fat, and gaining my strength back. I feel better than I have in years and could not have done it without the medication and the knowledge about what to eat and how to exercise.

My A1C is now 5.0 and my cholesterol is well within range for the first time that it has ever been checked (1st checked in 2018). It has been a process that I have worked extremely hard for. Your channel has been a part of that process by teaching me a lot about how to train and how to eat. Mounjaro has been a miracle drug for me but many don’t change their eating patterns and don’t do the work, they still eat the greasy foods only less of it and still see weight loss. Seeing this reminded me that there are some things some of us naturally struggle more with. I haven't been able to find any good videos on two subjects that would probably help loads more people than just me. The first would be a good video showing kids 11/12 years of age how to properly start working out. Things like what movements they absolutely should not do, and a good idea of exercises that will help them the most during development. The second is something for those of us with permanent and potentially degenerative damage (in my case, shoulders, back, knees) that will still allow us to be healthy while taking our injuries into account. I can't stand the times where one day in the gym, or even doing simple things around the house mean I'm in enough pain that activity for another couple of days is excessively painful. I'm not just talking about the normal physical therapy stuff that I've been through several times over, but something that is supposed to kill some fat (helpful to reduce weight on joints with issues) and build muscle. Thanks for the honest videos and good advice over the years.

      Do you sit a lot? In my case, I was obsessively pursuing a career that involved sitting at a computer ALL DAY. I forgot how to walk properly and stand properly. It’s still not perfect but the solution was to identify what needed to be loosened, what needed to be strengthened. I had to document it all and keep revising it. I narrowed it down a few stretches I do every day to stay pain free. And a few posture reminders.

    • @Cowboydan33
      @Cowboydan33 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hydrotherapy is a great way to engage in exercise while reducing the load on joints. Also consider finding a physiotherapist that doesn't use nocebic language, as often terms like degenerative damage can lead to fear avoidance issues which can lead to further disuse which will only compound your problems. In cases where the damage to joints is degenerative such a osteoarthritis, loading the joints is still important as the cartilage between joints receives its nutrients through mechanisms which are triggered by the joint being under load. Obviously being in pain for days after doing exercise isn't fun, so it's important to find exercises that are less aggravating, or to reduce the intensity of the ones you are already doing until your body adapts.

    Good video.
    When taking semaglutide people should also be aware that other possible side effects are medullary thyroid cancer, pancreatic cancer, acute pancreatitis, gallbladder stones, and gastroparesis (paralysis of the stomach that does not necessarily resolve after you stop taking the medication).
    These conditions can greatly diminish the ability to digest and absorb nutrients (acutely and/or chronically), as well as send you to the emergency room or worse.
    Semaglutide has been on the market for less than a decade. It has not been adequately researched in the myriad populations now taking it, so this is likely not an exhaustive list of potential side effects. We will know much more in 10 or 20 years when consumers discover them through use.

    I AM ONE OF THOSE DENIED ACCESS to Ozempic. I am a type II diabetic and my insurance no longer pays for a significant portion of it so my copay is affordable. So I am now unable to afford it and had to quit using it cold turkey. It frustrates me to no end that Hollywood and rich people can afford to use this and so big pharma is able to price gouge and those of us who cannot afford it can't get it even though it was prescribed for diabetes, not the latest weight loss fad! I'm currently on Mounjaro, which is very similar to Ozempic. In July 2023, I was 399.8 pounds at 6'2" and was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes with an H1C of 7.6. Additionally, all of my labs were trash. Things weren't looking good. I was aware of the weight-loss benefits of Mounjaro in that it could help curb hunger. But I wasn't delusional: I knew that I had to radically change what I ate if I was going to have any kind of meaningful results. Long story short, I didn't get to enjoy that side effect. Instead, I had to use brute force to fight the urge to eat, and I was constantly hungry all the time. I was eating lean beef, berries, and vegetables almost exclusively. I didn't go full keto (didn't want to), but I did go protein-heavy. During this time, I was also not really able to work out because my lower back would flare up from having to carry all of that extra weight. As of December 2023, my H1C was 5.2, and I am no longer diabetic, not even pre-diabetic. ALL of my labs are within normal range, and I lost 90 pounds. As of today, my weight is 279. 80 pounds to go!
    One of my goals was to be able to get back into the gym. Part of my plan was to track my body composition. What I can say is that with all of the weight I lost, I only lost 2% of lean mass. This isn't meant to be self-congratulating, but I think I am one of the few that used the drug as intended and got great results. My PCP said that I was the first patient that he's heard of that had my kind of results. Most people on these drugs lose about 20 pounds, plateau, and then stay on the drug forever. I'm trying to get to me goal weight as safe and as fast as possible so that I can get off this stuff. I think if more people had that mindset, then the drugs wouldn't be getting as much stigma as they are as some sort of miracle drug that will do the hard work for you. It won't

      Congratulations! So many people think Mounjaro is a magic pill, but all the instructions for the medication say it is an ADJUNCT to diet and exercise. That means it's not a SUBSTITUTE for the hard work of diet and exercise. As far as discontinuing the drug, that's a complex matter. If you have Type 2 diabetes, you may have to stay on the drug for quite a while. For obesity, you may need to stay on it long enough to reach your maintenance weight and stay with that weight for a year or so. Because, those who go off the drug say the hunger noise comes back with a vengeance.

    OK, I'm 70, diagnosed T2 diabetic 25 years ago. I have managed to stay off insulin with diet and various drugs. At 60 I was driving Uber and sitting on my butt all day. My A1c started climbing. I heard a commercial for CrossFit over 50 program, figured this should be a laugh, gave it 2 weeks (of a 6 week program). I did it for 5 years, A1c dropped to normal levels. Huzzah! Then Covid hit. Twice. I experienced what is known as Post Exertion Malaise (PEM). Essentially, physical exertion results being physically and mentally wasted for days. I thought I was being lazy. I was never diagnosed as it was unrecognized (as many of the Covid effects were, still are). After a ton of reading, I realized what had/was happening. And now that they have identified it, research is showing that Covid may have physically altered my musculature to the point that more physical activity (intense training) would exasperate my physical condition. As my A1c has resumed it's climb, my endocronologist has put me on Ozempic to help control the diabetes. I need to get back into the gym, but quite frankly I'm concerned about worsening my physical structure. Looks like I'm kinda between a rock and a hard place. Long walks for now . . .
    Jeff, excellent and extremely informative presentation. Keep up the good work, it is appreciated. MSD

But the diabetes became an issue due to my insurance not covering certain medications that actually worked. So my doctor prescribed Ozempic along with Jaurdience and continued the metphormine and glipizide daily. I was sticking to a 90% protein diet but couldn't lose anymore weight, I had plateaued. Try Berberine with policosanol it may help, but also ruthlessly root out sugar in your diet. HFC is terrible and it's in everything. They now label it "corn sugar". Maltodextrin is also likena sugar. Increase fat intake, healthy fats like in salmon or in avacado if you don't want too much animal fat and DO NOT snack.

    For people with significant amounts of weight to lose, type 2 diabetes, hypertension etc, this drug can be a lifesaver. It needs to be a part of the solution though, not all of it. Exercise and lifestyle changes are essential too. Remember all medications have side effects too, it’s a case of risk vs benefit. Think of it as a tool in the toolbox, not the only option

    • @BullShitThat
      @BullShitThat 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It ONLY needs to be a part of the solution if you have type 2 diabetes or you are obese! And your doctor will be the one to decide to put you on this drug if this is in fact the case; but for *everyone else* , this drug is a huge L! You'd have to be a moron to be taking this drug for any other reason

      I'm a nurse and my philosophy is medication should be a last resort. If your diabetes is out of control take your insulin regularly and consistently as recommended but no lie. That just delays the bad stuff type 2 diabetes is reversible but you have to watch what you eat. After that exercise and you'd be surprised after a few months to a year you might be stable enough to just take oral hyperglycemic medications rather than get a shot or 2 or 3 a day

      @VernCrisler 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@XblacklightZ Really, you're a nurse? Insulin is a medication done 2 or 3 times a DAY. These GLP-1 / GIP drugs do a better job than insulin, and lots of luck in reversing Type 2 diabetes. The injection is once a WEEK.

    I'm diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus T2 and my endocrinologist prescribed Ozempic but I just can't buy it anywhere legally.
    Nutritionist gave me a diet that I adhere to strictly and so far, combined with light weight and cardio exercises, I went from 320lbs to 280lbs in just over a month. My t-shirt size went from 20 to 16 and while I'm still fat as frak, I do look a bit leaner now.
    Considering that there are other DT2s that might need this drug more than me, now I'm not sure if I should be using it at all.

    Jeff, I am turning 50 in a few months, and I am on my weight loss journey. I recently bought a Weider 8530 home gym from a friend. It has bench, butterfly, lat pull down, leg lifts, squat, and what I call the jet pack for knee raises and leg raises. It also has a low row/pull for curls etc. Based on those exercises available, which I intend to do with regularity, and with the cardio I have already started doing including walking, and the thousands of steps I get at my customer service work, am I missing anything? I do have dumbbells here, if triceps or something are necessary, but I kind of think the lat pulldown would cover that?

    I appreciate you saying about the struggles. Due to meds for other reasons, even cutting junk out of my diet, eating so much better and doing cardio/weights. My weight just refuses to budge. Sucks, but my strength and stamina are improving. So they are the metrics I am holding on to and improving.
    I do want to say, these drugs are really good for those who are really obese and are struggling. It's better than doing surgery. It's not perfect. But it's the lessor evil between staying super obese or surgery. But they amount of people on it to lose 10 kilos or less is insane.

      Harsh. Would we say that to an alcoholic or a smoker?
      Some people will just not be able (or allowed) to consistently follow the good advice given here about strength training, cardio and diet. I have someone like this in the family: work and commute hours are long + kids to look after + severe eyesight problems preclude weight training + years of bad nutrition add up to over 120kg BW.
      Some diet cleaning up is already happening but the starting point is very poor.
      If he waits much longer to lose the fat, it may mean his retirement won't last long.
      If he goes for constant kcal deficit without drugs, I can't imagine the impact on mood and work.
      Taking medication to help control the appetite and help forget about bingeing makes a lot of sense. Rejecting "any amount of drugs" would reduce longevity and years in good/OK health.

    I am not a doctor, but I am an ICU Nurse who has extensive experience with rhabdomyolysis.
    Rhabdo is caused mostly by a build-up of proteins in the blood that damage the kidneys. Muscle is made of proteins (obviously), which are released into the bloodstream as the muscle breaks down.

    Good job, thanks for posting, important for people to know. I tried the stuff for a couple of months and couldn't stand it, just didn't feel right. Glad I quit! End of the day, no getting around putting in the gym work and eating more sensibly. By the way, thanks for your words on obesity. In my +50s now and having dealt with weight issues most of my life, I generally don't give a flying foxtrot anymore what people think, but people in the training and healthcare community really need to understand that for many of us, obesity is not a lifestyle choice, but a metabolic condition that can be challenging to deal with. - PS: Peter Attia discussed Ozempic fat to muscle loss ratio in one of his podcasts last year. His numbers are even higher, with a 1:1 ratio not uncommon.

    Jeff, here’s the answer. It’s called a combination treatment. Semaglutide and EmSculpt, the first and only technology FDA approved to cause hypertrophy and hyperplasia to the muscle. Please do another video explaining this, theres tons of peer reviewed and published clinical studies to help prove your point. I love this video, I love the information delivered to the people taking this drug, as well as aging, but they also NEED to hear the solutions. PLEASE Jeff 🙏🏼
