  • The best potato dumplings can be found on the island of Öland. They are called kroppkakor and have a spicy filling that reminds us of Christmas.

    As a Swede, I strongly disagree that these are seen as a delicacy. It's just normal husmanskost, which roughly translates to 'everyday food'. Food that's easy to cook and contain ingredients you mostly always have at home.
    It's a decent food, but also comes with the side-effect of you feeling very bloated afterwards.
    But a delicacy? No way, if anything it's seen as food for the poor/lazy.

      @@thes.a.s.s.1361 Depends on what you're after, smulpaj is pretty popular - a sort of crumble pie. Can be filled with a bunch of different stuff.
      Semla, a kind of sweet roll.
      Smörgåstårta is one of my favourites, essentially a big sandwich typically with shrimp or ham and cheese.
      As for savory dishes I'd recommend falukorv, it's a very versatile sausage that is delicious raw, stir fried, boiled or grilled.
      Korvstroganoff with rice is probably my favourite Swedish meal and has been ever since I was a little toddler :P And it's so easy to make!

    In Norway we call them kompe. Its alittle different from the swedish version, but it looks good the swedish version too . In norway we have butter and sugger on it. Sølandskompe is what i am used to have. We dont have unions in them, but salty meat. lettsaltet sideflesk we call it.

    Have you tried raw potato palt (no cooked potato) my mom came from upsalla and farmers made these when times were difficult. I'm a Swedish/American, 94 ys old. I use a lot of butter. Also oven pancake using the same batter as swedish pancake but have bacon pieces in the batter and cooked in the oven. Ken Felldin

      As someone who didn't like them as a kid: They're absolutely delicious. Just make sure you don't make them too dry and they're a lovely meal any day of the week.

      I would say central European. I had these dumplings in the Czech republic, but you will find similar one in Austria, Germany, Slovakia and possibly in Hungary and Poland

    • @nobodycares9494
      @nobodycares9494 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, very popular in Poland. We stuff them with meat filling, or cheese and fried onions, or just no filling inside but plenty of fried onions on top. Poles called them pyzy. We ate them for centuries.

      Kroppkakor is south east swedish: the counties of blekinge, öland, småland, gotland
      Palt is north swedish.

    • @livedandletdie
      @livedandletdie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dumplings themselves exist everywhere, it's just that potato dumplings is European, however the only Swedish Dumpling is Blodpalt, to even claim that Kroppkakor, which you can find elsewhere in Central Europe under the name Potato Dumplings, to be remotely Swedish is hilarious, sure they're extremely popular here, but that's all.

    I would definitely try them only if there were vegetarian versions - can you start making ones without any bacon?

    • @evilmiera
      @evilmiera 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely, the bacon or fish filling is to make them savory, it isn't required to make them stick or anything like that. Just supplement with something of a similar texture and savoriness, they are dumplings after all and could take almost any filling!

    • @Odqvist89
      @Odqvist89 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can fill them with onion and tart apple browned in butter instead of pork.
