- Throwing it back to when Canadian sprinter Donovan Bailey became the fastest man in the world, setting a world record in the men's 100-metre race at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, on July 27, 1996, in Atlanta, Georgia.

This has to be one of the greatest moments in Canadian sports history. I remember watching this vividly as an 8 year old. (Now 33) I still get goosebumps watching it.

@@pjaye3717 I have vivid memories of Donovan Bailey breaking the world record under 10 seconds here in Swanguard Stadium when I was like 9 or 10. Pretty crazy how that track is within walking distance from where I lived. He's inspired me to this day as someone who's action, no talk.

The man was in 2nd last place 30 metres into the race.
He overtook 4 guys in the last 50 metres.
Until I started sprinting, and getting formal coaching, I had no clue how difficult something like this really was. This is easily a top 5 of all time in the Olympics.

What a wonderful moment for Canada ! Today like Donnavan , Andrew De Grasse makes history by winning the the gold medal in men's 200 m. Even if it's not the 100m like Donnavan, it's wonderful for Andre and Canada. 🎖️🇨🇦

Donavan was boss that day! I remember working the night shift and driving to Oakville near Toronto from Scarboro to see him at the parade honoring him.
The was one of the better 100m performances I've ever witnessed. I, mean, he came from behind to not only win Olympic Gold, but setting a new WR, as well.

One of the few times I jumped out of my chair watching a sporting event. (The 4x100m win the week after, the 2002 and 2010 Olympic men's ice hockey gold medal game and the 2014 women's ice hockey Olympic gold medal game.
Textbook form by Bailey. Lead leg snapping down, driving through the track, arms pumping. Relaxed power. A beautiful thing to watch.
Slow start and then comes back to smash everyone. What a race that was.

I was always amazed at how Don Wittman could call any sport imaginable with tons of specific details & made it seem effortless.
That was an amazing race by Bailey and a great call by the commentators! Such redemption for Canada and Canadian Track and field after what happened with Ben Johnson in Seoul.
Bailey's weakness is his start, if he even had an average start he would of ran around 9.75
To this day, I still LOVE Donovan Bailey!! Such a great moment!!!!
You can say what you want, but this is the greatest accomplishment in Canadian sports history on the international stage.
A great win to be sure but it doesn't match up to Percy William's double victory at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics in the 100/200 m. sprints. I doubt if
a Canadian will ever win that double again.
I'll never forget this or the 2010 Golden Goal.

I don't 't know what happened in Canada, but what Donovan did made me happy although at the time I didn't know much about Canada. He was famous in Europe too. What a great athlete! Now I live in Canada, and I love all its athletes.

Don Wittman was best CFL NHL Olympic broadcaster of all time. We had it too good with Wittman and Bob Cole Chris Cuthbert on cbc sports for so long.

This is a great example of drafting in 100m sprints, Donovan matched the strides of the sprinters next to him and safely over strides to move up

Look at the ground Bailey made up, surely his straight line speed must be in the top 3 of all time. He is notoriously a bad starter, if he had a good start he would of clocked in the low 9.70's which would been out of this world then until Powell and Bolt arrived decade later.

You can literally see him switch into his next gear. Amazing technique towards the end, almost Cheetah like. His muscles are in full performance mode, his upper body is being used to propel him forward, longer strides, no flat feet. Very well done!

The false starts hurt his start. If you go back and watch all the false starts, Bailey had a good jump each time. Its like he picked it up once he knew the race was on.
Not necessarily. Every sprinter has an finite amount of energy. A better start and perhaps his finish isn't as good. What would be the difference in saying if Boldon had a better finish, he would have won?
@@RKRKRK78 Had Boldon had a better finish he probably would have won... i might suggest at the same time if he had a worse start than he did... he would have finished further back than he actually did.

He flinched right before the gun, attributing to his bad start. That finish though!
Bailey has always had a slow start though. It was always a matter of whether or not he could catch up.
That's why it's shocking to me that:
a. He once tied the world record for fastest 50m.
b. He beat Michael Johnson at the 75 mark in their 150m race. This was the race where the turn was at the *start* of the race and Johnson was considered the best turn runner at that point.
Bailey has given us great memories.
Wow I remember watching this as a little kid. He had the best top speed. Had he a decent start, feels like he could have taken off another tenth of a second.
Imagine what his time would’ve been if he hadn’t have gotten a bad start! Unbelievable comeback, great moment.
