    It's SUPER interesting going through these with y'all. I'm a professional illustrator and I love see how these compare to portfolios I've built and vetted. The biggest difference that I can tell is that your waving green flags are sometimes super neutral for me, but we agree on all the things that need fixing or another round of edits. Very cool!

    • @LearnUpstairs
      @LearnUpstairs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's a tough answer to give, I'm pretty sure this may vary a lot internationally. But maybe something that would help is if you can check other portfolios from students that went to the same school you're applying to.
      But to give you a rough guess, I'd probably aim for between 4 and 7. If you show a lot of drawings and images from a single project, maybe go for a lower number of total projects. But if you show just a handful of drawings, then you can talk about more projects.
      Hopefully that wasn't confusing haha
      Thanks a lot for the feedback, Namik! Cheers!

    I can't entirely agree when you say that it's just adding more pages to Avantika's portfolio...sometimes there's a size limit for submissions, so people tend to make it shorter, so I don't think this was the problem, the problem was the use of darker colors, and, of course, breathable spaces, which she could achieve reducing the size of some drawings...if it's digital, the size doesn't matter because you can zoom in. I would never make a portfolio to be only digital though.

    what size do you recommend for a digital portfolio?
    I initially did it in A3 so it could be printed but thinking it will be viewed digitally anyways so might as well use a digital format and avoid the black sides :)

    • @LearnUpstairs
      @LearnUpstairs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's no unique answer here. But thinking about filling the whole screen, you might want to choose a format that once it's opened as a spread, it occupies that 16:9 aspect ratio.
      Although this is also not guaranteed to happen on the employer screen, cause they may be using a different monitor.
      For example, I use an ultra-wide one, with an aspect ratio of 21:9. So the more horizontal ones fill my screen better.

    • @LearnUpstairs
      @LearnUpstairs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure! Any type of image or drawing should go in a portfolio if that’s your strength.
      However from my point of view it shouldn’t be the only type of drawing. Especially if you’re applying for a masters, you need to show that you’re a full fledged architect.
      But also as we mentioned on the video, there are various types of masters, so curating your portfolio towards that application process will increase your chances of getting approved. Maybe looking at portfolios from people who got in before you.
      I hope that gives you some clarity!

    I’m looking for ideas to go into a portfolio for a masters in architecture for students without an undergrad architecture degree. It’s a masters that’s a bit longer to get you caught up on design knowledges; therefore, I don’t have all these digital buildings under my belt like I see in all your samples. I’m going to the school hopefully to learn all that. I have a lot of art work and some floor plans. What do you suggest.

    • @LearnUpstairs
      @LearnUpstairs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The biggest advantage would be that Vray can be used in software like Sketchup. And Sketchup is much more "architecture friendly" than Blender. Meaning that you can actually design and preview volumes in Skp, whereas in a more technical software like Blender you're there only to visualize and that's it.

    Thanks! I have a question that has always confused me. If I am applying for a position do I send an ISSU link of my full complete portfolio? Or do I send a pdf of a 5page (approximately) sample portfolio? Or do I send a sample pdf portfolio (so admin can print it out) as well as an ISSU link to my full portfolio?
    I'd really appreciate thougths on this. A PDF is of course required to be less than 5mb right...so

    • @LearnUpstairs
      @LearnUpstairs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Jester, that will depend on the application prerequisites. Usually, the firm will say if they want something more specific.
      But if it just states "send cv + portfolio", that usually means your full portfolio.
      However, a full portfolio does not mean all of the work you've done your entire academic and professional career. This varies, but it's usually your best 4 to 7 projects on around 30 to 50 pages I'd say.
      And always compress your PDF file! It's best to be less than 25 MB so that it can be sent through email as an attachment. But this is usually also specified by the firm.
      Adding the portfolio to ISSUU is a good thing too.

      When you compress your portfolio the images/drawing will be shown in a lower quality? I’ve been using Illustrator for my portfolio and it was a big file with only 12 pages and when I compressed it the quality was terrible. I’m thinking about working with PS and InDesign, maybe it’s better?

      That's a really personal answer, there's not just one answer. But if I had to take a wild guess and try to aim for the average, I'd say around 20 to 25 hours total?
      Idk, this just depends on too many variables to be honest. Maybe other people can comment here with how many hours they took to redesign their portfolios.

    They always say put sketches or hobbies when applying to university (masters) but I don’t sketch buildings it’s more of fashion illustration would it be a wise decision to include it under hobbies and skills ?

      I believe when it comes to sketches or hobbies on a portfolio, it's always about showing a bit more of you and what you like.
      Extra skills, hobbies, or interests that add value to your portfolio. Any type of work really! From creative skills to more technical interests.

      I'm using a wired earbuds from AKG. But it's not that I chose it, it was laying around here. It has decent quality and fits somewhat alright.
      I tried some wireless ones, but they all have some slight delay that for me was perceptive when editing videos.

    Does every university require portfolio for enrollment in masters degree in architecture or or related facilties even we if have 5 years bachelor's degree in architecture and job experiences?

      No some university don’t require a portfolio but most do, instead they request for a 1500-2000 word personal statement. Western Australia does not require a portfolio for masters

    Why would any reasonable person go for m.arch. its useless. Its just your bachelors its no different.
    Try getting an msc. A master of science in energy in buildings or urban planning. Or construction engineering or structural engineering
    I suggest energy in buildings. It has nothing to do with architecture. Its all heat transfer and fluid mechanics. Your job opportunities will increase. Right now in my country building energy analysts are paid twice as much as an architect. Plus we get to work in government institutions. And the energy and petroleum sector. They employ us as consultants and solution makers and people that just calculate. In simple terms imagine mechanical engineering and enviromental engineering had a kid. It would be that. The world doesnt need more artists. It needs people that are good at math. Hard math. Fluid dynamics. Heat transfer... etc related to mechanical engineering.

    • @LearnUpstairs
      @LearnUpstairs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You certainly got a point! But maybe that's not the path everyone is willing to take. And also in some countries getting a master's is mandatory if you want to become a full-fledged architect, otherwise, you end up being an architectural assistant or architectural designer.

  • @jaycal1920
    @jaycal1920 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    OK, here is the problem. People only look at the aesthetics of a project. Do these Universities only teach the design and how it looks? is that it? Would an employer or company only hire someone from these portfolios because of the layout and font selection?
    If one of those is going to earn someone a PHD, a Doctorate, in architecture then I think it is a gimmick. I don't care if any of you get offended, it isn't meant to offend but the truth often offends.
    Architecture should encapsulate the geography and the materials and their sourcing and logistics and the efficiency of the structure and how it impacts the surrounding community and business.
    Not just some nice looking, often useless excuse for art, waste of time resources and funding for someone's ego to put their name into the world.
    I am glad I didn't waste my time at an educational facility and pay them to teach me to limit myself to produce anything like this.
    But yes some of them have a very nice and neat layout and are very well presented but if I was reviewing Architecture portfolios I would say these are all lacking a lot of information and details and more like a coffee table pass the time pretty pictures book.
    I would not take any of those seriously.

    • @Akifuzi
      @Akifuzi 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed. Architecture isn’t just art. It has to prioritize usability and structure. The artistic properties should lie within these two, not above them.

    Correction: there are no master's in achitecture because it cant be measured. So called masters are usually use in martial arts or painting because you can measure it.
