A little side note to the suicide of the imprisoned RAF members: Their cells were bugged. The chancelor and the head of the secret service supposedly listened live in on the prisoners preparing their suicide. Unfortunately it is not known what they said but we know what they did: nothing.
I found this channel because of Kraut's post. Amazing content, amazing editing. I would've expected this quality from someone like Lemmino. I really hope your channel gets the millions of views it deserves, I'll continue to watch your content

Came here from a Kraut post, gotta say I did not expect the quality of this video. It is a staple that even smaller channels can boast unparalleled quality that punches far above their weight compared to bigger channels. It is also a curious one about an incident that is probably not very known outside of Germany. In school it is also not very covered but something youd always hear about like the Gladbeck Kidnapping but were never really taught about it. My mother was probably more enlightening about the time when she was a university student at the time and we talked a lot about it. Especially that poster is a reminder of the times and how uneasy it felt on top of the Cold War, having a huge threat internationally and a lot of internal turmoil.
First video of yours I've seen. You're quality reminds me of Lemino videos. It's good, plus I love the analysis of the social effects at the end, gives way more depth than just talking about the heist

This video is incredibly engrossing and aesthetically absorbing. It reveals a story of a ghost, a ghost now forgotten, that engulfed Germany but also Europe, in a gelid atmosphere of terror and ideological clashes. Kudos to Imperial for another great one. (^-^)
I wrote a comment telling them that casualties is a combination of injured AND killed, and the diffferent killed vs injured numbers are usually given after the casualties number is. So in this case there were 10 casualties, 4 killed, 6 injured.
You did a crazy good job covering a topic that's incredibly sensitive. It's almost possible to even talk about it a little bit without "picking a side" so to speak. Good job!
@@Merluch I don’t understand what people even mean when they say “unbiased” in a context like this. Everyone has a perspective, and even if all information presented is completely factual, the choice of which facts to leave in and which to leave out reflects that perspective.
@@terdragontra8900 that is true. However i believe the sources used for this video were dubious because of such biases exaggerated several times throughout many layers of information to the point where factuality was lost completely. In the video itself you can notice it's laid down as a story, almost barebones and comically simplified to the point that there is no margin of interpretation or nuance. That's the issue.
@@Merluch you seem to have an issue with the medium itself, here. people have limited time and patience to sit through an exhaustive report of the facts of every notable event on earth, and the fact is presenting it as a story makes it stick better in the human mind, no matter how badly you’d wish humans to be more objective and data driven. and, well, there was no bias that screamed as “obvious” to me, no venom in his voice when describing things most in the audience would find egregious, for instance. Maybe the distortions are obvious to you because you are an expert on the topic…?
@@IMPERIALYT amazing work. Great stuff on this one and the others. Huge fan of your meticulous sourcing. Editing may seem simple enough to ppl but it’s really not. I’m gonna have a look at what you mentioned
Also this channel reminds me of a mix between Lemmino and Barely Sociable, with quality in my opinion surpassing both. Very well done, and I can't wait to see more.
What a great video! I’m a German myself and your nuanced work inspired me to add two minor things and additionally share two personal perspectives from the “German Autumn”. First the two points I would like to add content wise. The mission to free the hostages in Mogadishu was the first ever of the GSG-9 (Border Protection Group 9). Which itself was the first ever official elite police tactical unit of the German federal police. It got funded after the devastatingly failed mission by local German police to free 9 Israeli hostages during the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich, which resulted in the death of all hostages and a German policeman. That the mission in Mogadishu was a first for the GSG-9 must have added substantially to the tension in the decision making body of the German Government. The overwhelming success of this mission on the other hand and the secrecy surrounding the unit, establish a nearly mythic reputation of GSG-9 and helped the German public to regain some trust in the stability of the young state. Secondly I would like to add that the person you are quoting at 26:35, Jan Philipp Reemtsma, was not only a political writer. He knew firsthand what he was writing about as he was kidnapped for 33 days in 1997 and was released after his family paid a ransom of 30 million DM (at the time around 20 million dollars). However, I’m not sure if he wrote the used quote before or after his kidnapping. Now the two short anecdotes concerning the “German Autumn” which both illustrate the tension at the time and are coming from two different ends of the spectrum. I once met a woman who was the daughter of a German CEO (banking if I recall correctly) and she told me how it was growing up at that time. Her father was a public figure due to his job, but really not that well known and also not very important over all. That didn’t mean however, that there wasn’t concern for the security of him and his family. That resulted in bullet proof windows in the direction of the street in the family home as well as a state of the art alarm system. She (the daughter) was not allowed to walk alone to school and was not allowed to visit the home of new (and some older) friends. On school trips the bus was followed by a car with two undercover police officers and her dad had his own security detail that protected him during the day and sometimes as well at night. Remember, he was just a mildly important business man. She told me how hard it was as a young girl to live in this fraught environment. In contrast to this perspective there is my father. At the time he lived with around 12 friends in a former historic farm / mill in the middle of nowhere. They were young, left (not at all radical) and tried to establish a farm and restaurant. With the start of the terror of the RAF every left leaning community grew suspicious. The fear was they could provide refuge for the terrorists or store weapons, cars, money etc. for them. As tensions grew and the results of the law enforcement in containing the violence was rather limited, even my dad and his friends caught the attention of the police. So one day their little building complex and every road, forest path and other access point was surrounded by police and they were held by heavily armed police while the house and the surroundings were searched. That happened two times and of course on both occasions the police didn’t find a thing because there was nothing. Each search took several hours and they weren’t allowed to leave the room in which they were holding or call anyone, not even a lawyer, as there was fear that they could call reinforcements, warn someone or whatever. A practice that was illegal. Similar things happened to thousands of people all over the country. In raids and in countless police checkpoints. I don’t judge anyone, the example just shows how deeply uncertain and taut the situation was for both, the police and the population. Both anecdotes show the tension in Germany at the time and the deep impact on the public (even though these cases aren’t spectacular because nothing really happened).
Really appreciate what you've done with the visuals, especially the maps and geolocations of critical stops - helped get a firmer grasp on the timeline, but crucially, is far more engaging than a bog-standard globe/atlas approach would have been 👍

I have just been recommended this video and alongside it this channel, for the first time and I have to say that I am honestly amazed. I have been watching documentary style content on youtube for years, from Barely Sociable, Lemmino, disruptv and so on, down to more niche stuff, and I have to say that this channel, despite of its comparably small size, is more than on par with the more established channels that get 10 or 100 times the exposure. The visuals are amazing, from what it looks like the selection of topics covered on the channel is completely unique, but what takes the cake for me is the narration. As a german, I am sort of used to hearing any kind of international content butcher the fuck out of german cities, names and phrases, but I was surprised to learn that the opposite is the case here. At the same time, a flawless and almost accent free english voiceover, as well as nailing the german words in between, makes for an amazing experience watching the whole thing and shows that the creator(s) of the video went the extra mile for something only few would even notice. I certainly will check on this channel again every time I see new content coming out and I am convinced that it is only a matter of time until this channel blows up and reaches so many more people. Happy to have found this channel at the relative start of its journey. Keep doing what you are doing and thank you for the content

A little side note to the suicide of the imprisoned RAF members: Their cells were bugged. The chancelor and the head of the secret service supposedly listened live in on the prisoners preparing their suicide. Unfortunately it is not known what they said but we know what they did: nothing.
And that was good.

I found this channel because of Kraut's post. Amazing content, amazing editing. I would've expected this quality from someone like Lemmino.
I really hope your channel gets the millions of views it deserves, I'll continue to watch your content
Yeah the way this video's styling was made reminds me of LEMMiNO's style. I think it's fair to say that he got the inspiration from LEMMiNO and made this one great presentation....
@@DannyPlaysStuff yeah that's exactly what I thought! great video but I honestly find it annoying that he's copying him.
@@swoosh6947 i don't think this is considered copying. sure, the styles are very similar, but its clear that this channel put lots of effort into this video, with researching and the editing, and as far as i am aware there was no footage directly from LEMMINO. i think we should all just appreciate that we are getting more content, haha
@@swoosh6947 I don't think adapting a style is all that bad. LEMMiNO has never made a video on this topic, so I think it's completely fair game. If he were directly taking content ideas that's a different issue.

People like kraut, imperial, and etc. Have specifical agendas in all of their videos and use sources from think tanks. Beware.
First video of yours I've seen. You're quality reminds me of Lemino videos. It's good, plus I love the analysis of the social effects at the end, gives way more depth than just talking about the heist

I love how he has the sources and adding them to the video. A trustworthy channel.
This video is amazing as always, you seriously deserve way more subscribers
I watched legit the first 10 seconds and subscribed. I already know this is a channel that's going to go big. The visual effects done in this take a LONG time to do and seeing how it's 30 minutes long, this man must have put HOURS into this. I am excited to finish this video.

As a Canadian citizen of Somali background, i was really shocked that my country was involved in this hijacking but at the same time it was where it ended. Simply amazing work and a wonderful presentation, the graphics and they way you narrate it and everything else about this video is so awesome. A masterpiece im a subscriber and will definetely watch the rest of your videos. you honestly deserve at least a million subscribers. keep up the good work. Amazing video.
This video is incredibly engrossing and aesthetically absorbing. It reveals a story of a ghost, a ghost now forgotten, that engulfed Germany but also Europe, in a gelid atmosphere of terror and ideological clashes. Kudos to Imperial for another great one. (^-^)
You guys should probably collaborate on a video on the years of lead
I’m sick of people saying “but no casualties” immediately after listing a bunch of injuries. INJURIES ARE CASUALTIES, SAY FATALITIES!
Good job!
They did pick a side. In the video itself he admits to quoting biased historians and think tanks. There is an obvious negative bias.
What editing platform or software was used for this - in particular 20:19 ?
I'm using C4D!
I cannot articulate the surprise I had when I realized that this channel only has just over 10k subs with quality as good as this
Those animations are 20/20! They give such a calming atmosphere, keep it up guys!
When you find a video like this at 2 AM, your body needs sleep but your brain needs KNOWLEDGE
Wow, incredible video! Also a somewhat untold story outside of Germany, good to see someone making a high-quality video on it
Really appreciate what you've done with the visuals, especially the maps and geolocations of critical stops - helped get a firmer grasp on the timeline, but crucially, is far more engaging than a bog-standard globe/atlas approach would have been 👍
The production is insane on this video, finally someone to keep me entertained while lemmino is on breaks
IMPERIAL : ''They board an airbus 707''
Me, an Avgeek : Visible Confusion
this channel is so underrated goddamn, the production quality is just astonishing for a creator of your size

Any 7X7 series aircraft are Boeings.

The new lemmino has arrived! We really hope you continue with your work. Great job!
Lemmino is still out there...
Very cool video. As a (young) German I already knew parts of the story but this the fullest account I have ever seen in such a komprehensive form. Fun Fact : Ensslin actually studied at my school and the graves of the terrorists who committed suicide at Stammheim are near were I live and I have already visited them.
I don't usually comment on videos, but this is extremely well made. I've found a channel to binge watch for the next few days haha
This video deserves 1 million views. You did an amazing job.
Super underrated channel. One thing I did notice though is that you use Lemmino’s editing and fx style to a tee.
Your description of the societal impact was extremely good. It resonated with me as an American too since the t-word here and especially the date after 9/10 are very taboo subjects and we’ve gone through waves of the dilemma of fear and freedom vs security and control just like Germany.
Came here from the @Hoog community post, great channel and great videos. The story telling, graphics and visuals are some of the best I've come across so far.
Another brilliant documentary. Is this the first time you’ve used your face in a video? You look great!

The GsG9 were badass with the no friendly casualty operation on the plane.
It is still the essential counter plane hijacking example :D
Even more impressive considering that this was their first deployment, having been founded only 5 years prior

@@lonesome3958 True, that is the event that led to their creation. What I meant was more the claim to fame. They are still regarded as one of the top special operations groups in the world and that is largly thanks to Mogadishu.

I actually learned quite a lot about this topic in my school, but it‘s great hearing it all again chronologically and with more details.

Super arbeit man! Visuell und fachlich bemerkenswert inspiriert! Kanns kaum erwarten was als nächstes kommt
Wow. That is incredible quality and as German citizen I would love to seen something comparable in German language for students. Of course there are sources, chapters in books etc. but never found such a quality video with such a great script, animation and facts. Go on mate and greetings from cologne!
These things don't exist for German schools, because the point of a school education is not to give students a huge load of facts for them to learn.

I am nothing short of impressed by your video quality. Even if there were minor typos or mispronunciations, this video and the Italian cruise ship hijacking really got me glued to my chair and listening intently as if it was happening right now.
Loved the german pronunciation. You have to be German or maybe austrian or Swiss. But I would've never guessed by how good you speak english wow
another fantastic video that will eventually get the views it deserves when the channel takes off (pardon the pun). I really liked the gradient moving along paths like veins for example at 23:10.
Absolutely superb content as always. Also really cool to see some content about the RAF and the German autumn. In my opinion one of the most interesting, but internationally lesser known parts of German history.
I gradually start to see more channels like this everywhere, and I still feel amazed. This is amazing!
It's interesting that, as a German, I've not actually learned much, if anything, about this subject in school. To be fair, I've gone to school in a former Eastern German state, but still. It's also not a topic I've heard much about in society either. So thanks for this highly educational video ^^.
Btw, I really enjoy your pronunciation of German, it is excellent :)
Thank you! I am Swiss, but I mostly speak in Hochdeutsch, but sometimes I can make an error or two - glad you liked it though!
I'm from west Germany, and we also only toched on this once when we watched a documentary about it with a substitute teacher. I have to say tho, this video was half as long and much better made and informative than that documentary.
As the comment above me I'm from western Germany and have never heard anything about this in school whatsoever.
I made History Abitur in a west German state, and we also just sweeped above the topic in like a week, after the finals were written and nobody really cared anymore. It’s just not very present on the educational plan.
im from bavaria and i remember watching a similar video about this case, this one hereis no doubt better
Your style of editing reminds a LOT of Lemmino, love the work. Work like this deserves millions of views.
I think he popularized the 3d layouts of scenes to give a better and easier to see perspective on events and honestly I love it.
