What crazy is this guy doesn't sound like a pyscho like some other killers. He seems rational in his thinking which is almost scarier.
What is actually crazy is that a lot of people (like you) live in a different bubble from what reality actually is.
Just look at Mexico now, normal teenagers and young adults, rich or poor, become cartel sicarios who torture and kill like it's nothing.
I'd say most hitmen are rational. If they looked and acted crazy nobody would give them money

Murdering someone probably falls under the category of unstable and aggressive behaviour, but it doesn't presuppose that the murder wasn't thought out. I imagine there would be a lot fewer psychopaths on the loose if they constantly had a full-blown psychosis.

They very often say that. In most cases, this is probably right - stealing a massive amount from a cartel will have them want their goods and usually your life

It's also important to remember that there was a war on drugs in this country at that time. The police were not terribly interested in investigating murders of anyone involved with drugs.

I was expecting this guy to be super sophisticated and good at covering his tracks but he seems to have tragically just gotten lucky for a lot of these killings. Police found bodies in the bed of his truck and had a cigarette butt that they just neglected to test for years before he was caught.
The Hollywood sheen makes you think a contract killer would be an exceptional artist…but this guy made it look more like a side hustle.

The entire story reminds me of Mike Ehrmantraut from Breaking Bad. He got into the hitman business because of revenge for his son (family member) and he got caught because someone talked while he visited his granddaughter.

The book about this guy is fascinating. It's like he's horrible, but does have a conscience. He's definitely a psychopath, but different than a serial killer.

He can't be a psychopath and have a conscience. You need to pick one. The word psychopath is thrown around so much today when most of the time it's wrong. People can be evil or just do horrible things due to their circumstances etc. Not every murderer or criminal is one.

I think the only reason he admitted it was because if he didnt then the police wouldve charged his son in law instead. So he made sure there would be zero question who killed the guy.

@rosalind1635 it's very common amongst multiple murderers to admit to, in some cases, more murders than they actually commited because the state they live in has lethal injection. Odds are he made sure to admit to enough murders so he wouldn't have to rot in prison and get lethal injection instead. Either that or he thought if he had a bunch of other murders under his belt. There would be no question whether he killed the person his son in law was involved with. You've gotta think like a criminal to understand a criminal.
@rosalind1635 so not as much based on a hunch, but through understanding past circumstances similar to this. Mexican men are some of THE MOST family oriented people. There's no question whether he'd die to make sure his daughters husband stayed out of prison. Especially if he trusted him to keep his daughter safe.

@@sethstinson1341 Yep, this. I think he knew he'd likely end up in jail(or dead) because of his hitman work at some point, so letting his son-in-law take the fall would've just delayed the inevitable and put his daughter in a more vulnerable position.

This is a very high quality documentary, thank you for your work!
It's not that he was killing people without much power, he was killing drug dealers and cartel affiliates, that's why they got bumped to the bottom of the pile, that's why the cigarette butt wasn't a priority, they only have so many resources and they see drug dealers getting killed as a way lower priority than the husband who is carjacked and shot in the head in his garage while his family speeds away while the gunman fires at him which is a case that got national headlines for instance.

But only because I wrote it wrong, it should be 'so' and not 'and' afterwards as in

It's still written badly but not because of punctuation. The sentence is a comparison, "...so the a is not as valuable as the b".
It should have been written
"so they see drug dealers getting killed as a way lower priority than of a husband, who had just returned home from getting ice cream with his family, getting shot in the head and carjacked in his own garage while his family flee from more gunfire, that story made national headlines for instance."
You also can't cut off the last phrase of the last sentence into it's own sentence because saying for instance turns it into a subordinate phrase instead of an independent one.

@@wes4736 I think you took the point wrong, I believe he meant to convey that most of these “hit men” are not highly trained killers. They are usually just unfortunate people that are a product of their environment and/or choices who take this job out of desperation.
I was thinking the same thing but I suppose he was more of a 'contractor' for the cartel, not really a 'member/employee' so to speak. Since he was effective he kept getting jobs, but if he got caught the cartel could claim plausible deniability and avoid heat from law enforcement by being targeted for investigation into local operations (obv LE cant do anything if they're in Mexico)
6:32 I don't think it's that weird for Martinez to fly under the radar if he is listed in numerous murder investigations. That is assuming he committed them in different jurisdictions, because in the 70s and 80s they did not keep databases on everything. Doing what we would now consider due diligence must have been much more time-consuming back then, when you would have to make a phone call to ask someone to dig through a filing cabinet, or even travel there to do it yourself.

It's always interesting to hear how the family members of victims feel like "no one cared" but these are many times the same people that enjoyed whatever their now deceased loved ones illegal lifestyle garnered for them. This isn't always the case but it is the case many times. When a hard working good person is robbed and murdered, people feel anger and want action, strangers included. When people hear that a person that was selling poison to their loved ones was killed, they don't usually care as much. That's just being honest and real. Another big part of the problem is that you're dealing with a culture that usually refuses to work with the authorities. When it's not their loved one needing help, they don't want to get involved. It's very similar to how things were when the Mafia was openly powerful, people didn't cooperate with the police much and things were allowed to carry on for years.

The hitman element puts him in a grey area. Serial killers do it purely for personal reasons. There are tens of millions of military personnel around the world who are legally allowed to kill other people. It's one reason this case is not as disturbing.

It makes sense that the victims where no ones. Who takes money from drug cartel/ hideos or unknown people when you have friends or family who care for you?
But it's so interesting, that he got caught, because he killed someone with a personal reason. If the insult for his daughter wouldn't have triggered him so much, he probably could be still in business
Probably not considering California & Florida already were investigating him on his DNA being found in Florida. Might have bought him a few more months but they probably would have had him either way.

He had no clue if those people had killed his sister, they were just in the same building. Could have been the killer and his two random friends he invited over for poker, for all he knew

OP - I thought the same as you 👍 I got to 1:15 &, as soon as they called him "cold-blooded", my instant reaction was "nope, they killed his sister! That's not cold-blooded, that's vengeance!".
For those saying that the people in the house may or may not have been involved, remember that he dropped her off the night she went missing. He saw them and they made him uncomfortable, so he knew who they were and who he was targeting. Police will have needed descriptions from him because nobody came forward. Whether they killed her or not, they were involved because they didn't come forward, didn't help her, and did nothing to let the family know what was happening or look for her.
He knew the score at 16. It's difficult to knock him for that.
I don't know how many kills this guy has but when I was growing up, we had a guy around our neighborhood who they called "Meatball." He was a known hitman and is legendary around New Orleans to this very day. One thing that Meatball became legendary for was dressing up like an old lady to get close to a target. It's been said by NOPD that he has more than 70 kills. There's a video about him where some of his co-defendants were interviewed on a channel called Inside Source TV.

US police in general are very bad at catching murderers, the US have a nation wide closure rate for this type of crome of only 52.3%, Germany has a closure rate of 91,2 % down from the best it was in this decade with 95,1 % and even better 99,8 in the 90s.
