    Blows my mind that you can fly to the other side of the world in just one go! Brilliant report - a very entertaining and thorough review. The food on board looks absolutely delicious 😋 as well. I didn't think you could get menus with so much variety on a plane. Awesome!

    Great that Qantas told you to get there 4 hours in advance & that you were able to book in luggage & then go back to the hotel. My friend recently flew in from London via S'pore and the baggage queue was around 3 hours. Then it was a massive trot to get on the plane which was 1 hour late leaving. The Qantas flights in the '60s for Europe always stopped in Darwin for refuelling and I remember the getting out into the heat plus the wattle blossom decoration on the cabin walls. I can't wait to get back on a Qantas flight again!

      When the Russian KGB tried to force Mrs Petrov (wife of the Russian attache who was defecting to Australia - He was KGB), the flight had to land to refuel in Darwin. There was a huge kerfuffle on the tarmac, but they managed to get Mrs Petrov away from her handlers and she returned to Canberra to be with her husband. This was in the 1950s.

    just a small detail; QF 2 is the London to Sydney flight which normally stops in Singapore so in this case the Darwin stop was instead of Singapore not Perth. This is unusual & may have been in order to avoid a stop at Changi as a Covid precaution. QF 10 is the London to Perth flight which then continues to Melbourne. Resumption of QF 9/10 will have to wait until WA opens its borders. QF 2 normally utilises an A 380, QF 10 the B 787.

    Great film and really useful to see for my next planned trip over to see my folks. Please can you ditch the repetitive music though. It got on my nerves after a while. I haven’t flown with Qantas for years now as I need to fly into Brisbane. Compared to my flight with them on a jumbo it looks to have improved a great deal. Still not sure I would change from Singapore though. . . . One to think about. Thank you.

    • @beagle7622

      Why would you honestly for what you are saving in time . I was hoping to go back with Cathay this year but that looks more risky every day. One of the reason I have to stop somewhere so it might as well be as close to half way as possible . If for any reason like the person in front winding there seat all the way back for most of flight for the whole flight or a very dry cabin like the A380 I was in , your trip is going to be hell.
      When the MD markets these flights it for Business & Economy plus (wrong term for Qantas only ).

    A pastie is English from Cornwall. It started as food the miners took into the mines. Rick Steins says that in that time it was savoury on 1 end & sweet at the other.

    • @loungeindex
      @loungeindex  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, you obviously missed my irony. Yes, a pasty, a traditional variety of which is particularly associated with Cornwall, is certainly British. However, this was the Australian version, a pastie, which looks and tastes very different. Good too, but not British.
      Plus, if you listen to my surprise in my voice, I was reacting to it being an unusual item to serve on a plane!

    • @EarlJohn61
      @EarlJohn61 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of Cornish miners ended up in South Australia... And we have pretty much adopted the pasty... Other states not so much!

    • @kernowboy137
      @kernowboy137 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For those claiming a English dimension to the Cornish pasty it has Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) - in other words, it can only be called a Cornish pasty if it is made in Cornwall - moreover like the Scots, Welsh and Irish the Cornish people are recognised as a national minority in the UK. Unfortunately, relying on the Oxfordshire born Rick Stein for information on all things Cornish is akin to asking me to ruminate on the cultural significance of Yarmouth bloater.

    In 1967, tourist class London to Sydney by Qantas, then Ansett-ANA on to Adelaide took two days and cost just shy of a thousand pounds. And that was serious money in 1968. But planes were less crowded back then, airline food was better, and the stewardesses were angelic. Happy days.

    Great review and love the content, only comment would be is that I would invest in a DJI Osmo or something similar just to reduce the camera shake 😀 love the video otherwise

    Interesting trip report. Could care less about the wines, however. Never touch the stuff. Straight to Brandies and Cognacs for me.

      Alas none of the current aircraft in production can make the distance LHR to SYD with a full load of passengers and cargo. Qantas are working with Airbus on a special ultra-long range version of the A350-1000 which will also be fitted with an extra fuel tank in the hold, and may have the aircraft in the next 3 to 5 years. For now, the only option is a Darwin or Perth pit stop.

    I agree with your comments about Australian Citizens at the end there. I won't go into my situation but needless to say, I am not very happy about it. However, with regard to your trip report, well done.
