It’s hysterical how dramatic people are about these comparison videos. I’ve even seen people go as far to say skin tones look “dead” or “sick.” What?!? Both of these cameras genuinely look amazing. Are there differences? Of course, but the argument could be made that a lot of the differences come down to the glass. I have a Sony A7RII and have shot on an A7III and both cameras produce amazing images that I’ve never once been unhappy with. Amazing skin tones, highlight retention, color rendition... you name it! I feel like the Canon’s dynamic range was slightly less but still striking and not put beside another camera? You’d never know. Thanks for the comparison!

Aside from the background being more blown out on the 1.2, I'm not seeing a big difference here. The Canon seems to be a bit washed out/faded, while the Sony’s contrast seems to pop out more.

Is there more compression on the RF? Or the Sony lens seems wider? Comparing the model’s face is a lot of the portrait shots seems the facial jawline is wider on the Sony, even the side profile seems somewhat wider?

The EOS R has very cool colored JPEGs, some of the worst I have seen from Canon, they almost looked washed out to me. The RP has warmer looking JPEGs, one of the best I have seen from Canon. I am a JPEG shooter, so that was a big reason I chose the RP over the R. The RP has better JPEGs then either of these cameras. I sold my a7iii when I got the RP.

    • @chrisnaff1162
      @chrisnaff1162 ปีที่แล้ว

I think we all kinda know the answer this now with the R5 out. Canon RF glass crushes Sonys. Shoot, even sigma came out with an improvement over the Sony 85 GM. There is not a talking head on TH-cam who would recommend getting the Sony 85 GM in this video over the Sigma 85, 1.4 with the new mirrorless mount from Sigma. But the RF 85 1.2 from Canon destroys them both. Maybe one day Sony will stop relying on third-party manufacturers to outsource better glass. Until then, canon owns the market on glass, which is why they can command these ridiculous prices for their RF lenses. When you’re the best, you get to choose how much you cost.

    Hi, greetings from Europe.
The validity of both objectives is evident,
you notice the difference in depth of field between F1.2 vs F1.4, Sony's work with eye tracking is unsurpassed, but in this case Canon, it went very very well.
The colors, wow, in many shots, Sony gives a good and refined jpeg, indeed already ready, as it tends to saturate with the editing, plus Sony returns a good skin color, you notice in a shot where Sony gives a color of uniform skin, face and hands, while the same shot, Canon returns only a good color of the face, this could be due to the difference between F1.4 and F1.2.
In backlight, Sony wins in my opinion, just notice the color of the hair, which is more natural .....

Scratching my head as to how and why so many people like the Canon colours more than Sony. Each to their own I guess but I don't see how the tones or colours from the Canon are even close to as good as Sony's colours in these examples. The Canon files seem way too magenta, the colours are washed out and you can tell the dynamic range is not as deep as the Sony's. Perhaps editing to match both cameras output might give a better comparison but I find overall the colour science from Sony seems more film-like. The highlights appear to have more depth but that could be an exposure setting. The Rf 85mm seems to have a slightly tighter aspect.

Yes The Sony Colors here debunk the myth that Sony Colors stink…. On the other hand, the Canon is sharper and warmer with the skin tones and eyes. My very unprofessional opinion is the the Sony would be better for landscapes and more environmental portraits and images. But if you’re trying to maximize the portrait result, the Canon and the $1000 more RF 85 1.2 is marginally better. But do you have the $1000 extra to spend ? I guess it comes down to individual preference and budget…😊Also the flare is better controlled on the Sony, but more clinical. I guess I’d go with the Canon for my tastes and desires…Good comparison.

For image quality Canon is better but for Sony the skin tone is very easy to tune if shooting raw. And Consider the system and price , Sony is a good option.

While many say it’s easy to edit or doesn’t matter when shooting raw, that’s only the case when off color tones are equally present in the image like with incorrect white balance. But when skin suddenly has green tints or when certain skin color tones are incorrect or missing it’s very hard to just edit that back in a way that looks natural. At least it may take you hours on an image that could have looked great out of cam.

The Sony colours are way better, except for the skin tones on the face, where Canon wins out (mostly), but it's almost by an absence of colour, or at least an absence of adverse colour tints.

No clear winner as far as the lenses go. Sony's warmer and more detail in the shadows. Hard to justify the Canon F/1.2 price when you look at these images.

Oversaturated Sony colours. Sony has to do something about this. Next year Canon will have a whole new lineup of bodies and those combined with the RF lenses will kill the sales of Sony in the fullframe department.

@@KB-wb3xh A large aperture is more than just blur I would think. I have an Tamron 85mm F1.8. It's an amazing lens, I love it. It does everything well, but comparing it to the RF 85mm is like comparing a family car to a supercar. They both do exactly what is expected from them very well. Where I commend the RF lenses compared to their EF counterparts is that they are sharp at F1.2. Why pay for an F1.2 if you have to stop down to get usable sharpness.

The colour of Sony too yellow. The colour of Canon is noble. In the world of photoshop or photography the raw picture with a light colour is much easier to edit. If the raw file photo is a bit yellow it is still fucking yellow 🤣
