God commanded the sabbath for a reason. As a child, I was raised a Seventh Day Adventist and we always rested on Saturday. I think we should do more of that. You might try to cover the bed next time with a tarp.
I was raised on 7 acres. My parents had a glorious huge garden every year for close to 30 years. They tilled every year. We raised goats and barn clean out went on the garden and everything got tilled in. I only have raised beds and a back yard garden no farm land. Its your garden your choice. Im so happy to see you in the dirt again. Enjoy.
ARE YOU OKAY? Hi precious, I haven’t commented in some time (because I don’t have internet or cell service where I live now) but I’m SO concerned because I saw you fall at the end. Please let us know how you are!! Praying
Yikes Rachel! I hope you’re ok after the broad fork fall. That looked like it could of hurt. That soil is fabulous. Can’t wait to grow with you this coming year.
Your Sabbath year away from gardening was obviously meant to be since you had a lot of other unforeseen commitments to deal with during 2023. Todd is so very thoughtful and has put Rachel uppermost in many decisions. Good bargaining on the compost etc. neighbours have been trading this way for generations - it never gets old. Looking forward to gardening with you in 2024.
Rachel hope you didn’t hurt you back on the fall. Todd you really inspire me with your work ethic. I’m 68 and been serious about developing a self sufficient/ Homesteading attitude and I find it a great deal of work. It’s worth every sore muscle and something that has helped me get thru the death of my 40 yr old prodigal son. Our hearts have been broken and you both have been a great comfort in a hardship. So many things you have shared in so many ways, thank you for sharing your lives. Wish you were our neighbors but at least we’ll meet in heaven so day. Your a blessing. More fish videos please Todd😊😊
Definitely a lot of work. Sometimes I almost feel more sore if I just sit around vs. working and working. Doesn't seem like we meant to be still for long.
Your garden, your rules. My dad tilled his garden every year and we lived off everything he grew from year to year. Mama didn't have to buy much produce or meat when we were growing up. What we didn't eat fresh, we water bath canned ~ ❤ PS ~ hope you're ok after the fall ~ 🙏✝️
I til my garden every year in the spring. In the fall I add a years worth of horse manure and let it sit til April. Then we till it all in. I had one of the best years in the garden this year!
We have a 5 acre homestead with a horse, 3 goats, chickens, bees and soon to be rabbits. Our garden feeds 5 people with plenty of extras( our canning storage my husband built was shared in your comments on a fb post) and is around 1/2 to 3/4 of an acre. We till it every year due to the amount of clay in our soil even after 15 years of composting and amendments. Even with the tilling every year our garden is very bountiful as we till in our goat and chicken bedding and composted horse manure. Can't wait to see you get back into it next year!
Don't beat yourself up for tilling. Old timers tilled twice a year, threw on the manure, and never looked back, or worried about anything except rain. Maybe we need to do that sometimes, too.
This is fabulous. You'll be Glad you tilled. We've been tilling and building our soil for 7 years. Less bugs & less disease & less weeds. We started solarizing in the hottest part of summer to knock back bugs. We add homemade bokashi when we plant out our seedlings. We make leaf mold Compost, composted deep litter chicken run with leaves & worm vermiculture composter. The Bible talks a lot about tilling the soil. No til just doesn't make sense especially in clay or sandy soil. ❤❤❤
I don’t want to add too much because I love the sandy soil as it’s easy to work, but it cleans off the root crops, bulbs and tools easily. I see many adding loads of amendments, for me I don’t feel it’s necessary. Not all crops or flowers like rich soil. Hugelkulture is said to provide fertile soil for decades. I just use leaves, broken down wood chips and fertilize with bonemeal and blood meal at times depending on the crop. We have chickens again this year and that’s all I’m using. I have a couple different compost piles and one is just for old potting mix and sometimes I just bury scraps right in the rows. I believe doing everything in the garden on a dime. Bags of stuff is very costly on a larger scale. I have a couple RBs, but find it more beneficial in many ways to do wide long rows and just outline with reclaimed boards to hold wood chips in the path. To me money spent on shade cloth and bug netting is well spent. The severe drought pushed us to drip emitter irrigation. The cloths, irrigation and changing varieties that are best for my garden settled a long mystery about beets, carrots and radishes- I can grow all of them now and had state fair sized rutabagas. I never, nor could I not garden for a year. If you have bugs get some birds. I observed one of our roosters today digging and he uncovered a cut worm. He didn’t eat it right away until I asked if he planned on doing so. He clucked a couple times to his buddy as if he caught the catch of the day and then ate it.😂
Glad you are back in the garden! I applaud your obedience to doing the sabbath in a tough year. I know your time was filled with family so that is always a blessing.
Get a T-post puller, relatively inexpensive and it will be a game changer when relocating the trellis! (Helpful tip: use a 12” square 3/4” piece of scrape plywood if the ground is soft)
Hope your back is ok. I recently did something similar since it was a bed i dodnt garden in. I cant wait to see more gardening videos. But i got garlic planted. Need to do 2 more beds.
Wow! That Sabbath year went so fast! I’m missed watching you guys garden but it was definitely meant to be for you guys. I’m excited to watch you come back from a year off.
We till our garden each year. In the fall, I till it. We've learned to spread compost on it at the end of the season and will put our wood ashes on it over the winter. In the spring, it all gets tilled again and I get to planting. It is a successful, thriving growing space. Your tilled ground will be happy and I hope that you will be, too. Good to see you back in your garden.
Ya microbes figure it out, like for billions of years. 😊 A girls gotta do what a girls gotta do. I love your reset and looking forward to seeing your garden continue to produce.
Hope you didn’t damage your back when you fell Rachel ! I’ve done no dig for 4 years now and this autumn I turned all the soil to refresh everything as the soil was getting compacted deeper down , for healthy garden soil it definitely needs to be refreshed every so many years depending on how heavy you grow through out the seasons. Looking forward to seeing your plans for next spring and the coming seasons 😊
Rachel, we are all so happy to see you in the garden once again. Much respect for your sabbath year❤ While we prefer no dig as well, we’ve had to till from time to time. Your garden, your rules! Keep sharing. Your YT channel is one of the best and most positive ones out there.
Hard to believe a year has passed. Amazing work you've done to create that soil. I'm of the opinion that you should do what works for you. As mentioned, you can amend and inoculate and do all sorts of things to bring more life into that soil. We can't wait to see how everything turns out.
The best results I’ve had in my raised garden beds is from placing cardboard on top with the edges tucked down the sides. Rich black and loamy in the spring ‼️ This year I have planted white Dutch clover for fertilizer. I might still put cardboard on top because I may have waited too long to plant the clover…? I’ve used mown leaves and it worked fine. Cardboard was ideal❣️ The pressure is on for the tulip display in May😁🌷🌸🌷🌷🌷🌿🌷🌷🌷🌿🌷🌷🌸
Hope you're ok after the fall Rachel. Great to see the garden taking shape already and I agree with Todd on running the rotary hoe over the outside garden. :)
Woven ground cover from growerssolutions is GREAT!!!!! Living Traditions Homestead, Deep South Homestead and a few others use it also. I love ours. We have it covering the whole garden even under the raised beds. Keeps the weeds out of beds. No mulch or wood chips needed around the beds/in the rows. Wish it would stop raining and warm up alittle so I could finish putting mine to bed. Thanks for sharing. God bless and protect.
Do a bean growth test on the compost. It could have persistent herbicides from bagged grains fed to animals. If it passes. I might want to get some from them. You could use the front shovel to pull up the bed frames. Then till.
Hi I my tablet went boom on me and I had to wait to get a new one, so I miss some of the TH-camrs but you all are coming back slowly, so glad that you are back in the garden I love gardening god bless
I got so tired of battling weeds and I mean battles! I watch Living Traditions Homestead who happen to be in Missouri where I live as well, and they use a weed fabric on their garden beds. I tried it this year and OMG the difference! I even put it in my raised beds and just had a few weeds around the edges that were easily pulled. I’ll never go back to open beds again.
Gardening is hard, but so rewarding. You also know what's in your food and what isn't! Sending prayers your way for that nasty fall at the end. Your surely going to have a bruse from it. It's been a very busy year for you while your garden was at rest. Sending prayers for you and your family. Glad you could fit the trip to Alaska in also, as it was a much needed get away. Love from Western, N.Y.
In my garden I till every year my garden is not as big as yours I don't thin my carrots so no weeds .I come out every day for a hour and pick my weeds . When crops are finished I put my garden to sleep. First I dig and then rake put plenty of mulsh and leaves then I cover the beds in land scape fabric and pin it down just after taking up some fabric to set my garlic today. (9TH NOVEMBER) I will harvest July 2024 Will remove rest of fabric in March or APRIL 2024 to set first garden crop which is potatoes 🥔 looking forward to be following you for 2024 setting and harvesting love watching you in your second home A little slower this year had a knee replacement done in September and my second knee replacement in Fed 2024 I AM 70 PLUS YRS Margaret Lynch SOUTHERN IRELAND

Yayyy someone else who pulls weeds by the root! Broadfork, (sp?) I need one of those. Big hugs! Lucky you to have such a wonderful hubby to help you! Love the smell of my soil too. 😊
Now we till our garden every year and we add our own compost we make and stuff that a no till gardens do and we have a great harvest something do go one year and others don’t just like everyone else experiences . Nice looking soilTodd is tilling up. I’m going to take all my depleted pots and make them ready by getting all the plant life out of them and adding a hefty layer of leaves…maybe plant some garlic!
I’m so excited for you! Just your joy made me smile so big! I opened my freezer this morning and actually said, out loud, “Hey Rachel, would like 300 lbs of frozen tomatoes!” Lol We till our garden every year. It is an in ground garden (we have a tractor(s))and it’s almost an acre. This year we covered it with woven weave fabric. Best idea I’ve ever had! We did lift it and covered it with our compost, rabbit tea, and worm castings. I’ll cover with the fabric again! Like I said, the best thing I’ve ever done.
Surprised you didn't use cover crops to help your soil. Game changing and really no need to till using right crops, right season and cutting before seeding.
I till my garden every year at the end of the season. I then add my composted chicken manure and mulch over with shredded leaves from the property. I have a beautiful garden every year. Can’t complain.
This was my sabbath year too.. I needed a break and so did the ground.. we noticed ours needed a huge dose of nitrogen for this upcoming season.. so we bartered for non gmo wheat.. from the farmer up the road.. what we bartered a driveway to park his semi for 1 day and my hubby to drive it across the road and park it.. no worries he is a truck driver.. so we planted winter wheat.. and I got 2 bushels for making my own flour.. I know we got the better end of that barter.. but my hubby also helps when he can at their farm..
So glad your wait is over. We have one garden bed in rest this year. Next year will be two that we built the year after the first one. So we are kind of rotating as we expanded our garden each year for a while. Can't wait to see your abundance of produce (and canning of course) next year!
I wanted to tell you. I was thinking about you this morning!!! About you planting and growing next year!!! I am so dang excited!!! I just can't wait to see your Beautiful Garden!!! God Bless Us All!!!
Our fall garden is off to a good start. Mike planted and we should be harvesting up to mid December if we don't get a crazy freeze. We are doing a video this weekend. Mike cultivates now and then and yes tilling helps bring air into the soil. Blessing to you. Rochelle
I’m so happy that you guys going to do gardening 👩🏻🌾 next year? . Instead of throwing the compost on grass, you guys should’ve gotten a tarp, not waste any of it. And yes a good deal for honey
Turning sand into that, you did a wonderful job! And don't worry, you won't damage it that much by tilling it once. The weeds are going to feed the soil and the bug eggs are going to die by being brought to the surface. The amendments you will add are going to be wonderful for it too!
I am so excited to join you gardening in the spring! And maybe my channel will grow as I garden alongside you. (not this account, my business account.)
God commanded the sabbath for a reason. As a child, I was raised a Seventh Day Adventist and we always rested on Saturday. I think we should do more of that. You might try to cover the bed next time with a tarp.

I sometimes sit in one spot and just look at my garden for 30 minutes, then move to another place and look at it from that angle for 30 minutes.
You awoke the soil after her year of rest. What a beautiful thing 🌱

I'm a no dig gardener and my weed problems are minimal. I use very little compost but a lot of hay.
Wow! You have beautiful soil, I'm a little envious. I'm still at the sand stage so I think I'd better go binge from the beginning
So nice to see you in the garden again.
Excited for the new season
Your soil surely looks divine! I also love the smell of good dirt. Always refreshes me! haha
I’m so happy that you guys going to do gardening 👩🏻🌾 next year? . Instead of throwing the compost on grass, you guys should’ve gotten a tarp, not waste any of it. And yes a good deal for honey
Great looking soil .
I’m so excited to follow along after this sabbath year.
Turning sand into that, you did a wonderful job! And don't worry, you won't damage it that much by tilling it once. The weeds are going to feed the soil and the bug eggs are going to die by being brought to the surface. The amendments you will add are going to be wonderful for it too!
So glad to see you jn the garden again 👍❤️
I think it's great, I'm very looking forward to seeing how these experimental results turn out. It's probably going to turn out really great
I am so excited to join you gardening in the spring! And maybe my channel will grow as I garden alongside you. (not this account, my business account.)
