I ordered some Elderberry cuttings a few years ago. The directions that came with the cuttings said to put cuttings in water until they root. I did that and now I have five Elderberry bushes that are doing great. Good luck 🤞🏻
I used to get 10 gal+ per day out of one tree. Carry 2 empty pails with lids with you and just swap one when you check on them. When full, I pour ½ the sap off into the other empty pail, put lids on both. Makes it easier to carry back. I used to just store the sap outside. It’s plenty cold out yet. Maybe put them in the garage IF the days get warmer. You need to have that burner going whenever you are home and can monitor it. You can refrigerate the reduced sap until you can get to it.
Northern Michigan here. Hard to believe how early we are doing this. So far 40 gallons and more coming. Also I started doing my gooseberries a few years ago growing great. Love learning more on my property.
Gooseberries are ridiculously expensive, and so very tasty, so I think propogating those is amazing! Love elderberries too. Good luck with the farmstand! Will be very cool to see how it all turns out.
Exciting to hear you are planning a farm stand.....I have a little egg wagon for a couple years and this year I want to expand what I offer, as long as I got people stopping for eggs I figure I may as well add more things for sale. I feel encouraged knowing you are planning that too.
Beautiful snow. It was 72° here at 4am and now it's 36° at 1pm here in Southern Indiana. I would love one good snow before Spring 🌼🌱 Enjoy and stay safe
I enjoy watching your channel. I really loved seeing your two dogs at the beginning of the video. They are so cute! We recently just lost our 15 yr. Old dachshund.
That’s awesome, well you should look into Lead Farmer 73 he does a lot of this with trees air layer, propagate. Etc since you guys said yah wanted to learn . He has lots of videos . He used to be an RN, &recently retired from the post office. He’s also a Bee Guy ! 😊
I never hear anyone in North America talk about the magical things you can do with elderflowers. I live in Germany and elderflower cordial is super popular here.
I'm hoping to get in the local mountains when the elderberries are flowering and collect some stems for rooting as well as blossoms for cordials. Tried rooting cuttings a few years ago and they never grew roots, maybe our western blue elderberries are more difficult? I'll try again and hope to be successful this time. It will be fun seeing the progression of your farm stand!
Try a shorter pot for boiling sap, it'll help to boil off faster, or a mini reverse osmosis hehe I'll def try the elderberry propagation method you showed. THANKS!!
I love meeting people from the extra seedlings I start and sell. How long until your elderberry cutting will produce fruit? Wondering if I should take cuttings or buy some bushes. Thanks!!
Nice to see you doing something new for you 😊 I had great success propagating elderberry in summer, just by sticking them in compost in a pot and putting them warm. Rooting hormone powder didn't work for me, just compost did. For propagating hormone, you can also use willow water. Soak small willow pieces in water for 24h or so and use that. Willow has natural rooting hormone in it (it's why they grow so fast). 1 eye above the compost, 1-2 below of the cuttings works great for me. Good luck, hope you have a lot to sell!
I love propagating my plants. Elderberry are usually pretty good at taking. Currents are the easiest I think. Lavender is great to do this with too. Have you tried stool mounding your blueberries? Takes a year but minimal effort.
How exciting! I have always heard cuttings is the way to go with trees. But never took the time to dig into it more. Can’t wait to see how this works for you. Thanks for taking us along. Sure enjoy you both very much.
So sorry but when I rooted my elderberry I just put branches in a jar of water. They rooted and I put them in a pot with soil and they grew. And grew and grew. From Ontario Canada
You have inspired me to do the same with my gooseberries. Have you got a new microphone? I would live to see a video explaining all the recording equipment you use.
Thanks so much for sharing this propagation process! We have a very mature Lilac that I've been wanting to try to propagate. It sends up so many suckers each spring that always seem like such a waste to just compost. But it somehow never crossed my mind how much space (and soil) I could save by rooting a bunch in one pot and then only potting up the survivors.
I’m going to try that with my peach trees when I trim them. Those were pricey last year. It won’t be on a root stock, but oh well. My gooseberries grow like weeds, in one of the driest areas. I can’t get the blueberries to take off in the same area. I dug them up and redid the soil like you did last year - And, bought a new one. Seeds are out in the stores!! Walmart, Krogers, Meijers, Dollar Tree.
Willow Branch Tea also a good rooting stimulator and antifungal. I would definitely be interested in cuttings (could meet you at the Amish store on one of your cabin trips)!
My husband and I enjoy watching your videos. Out of curiosity do you have any snow or did you record your videos in the fall. We have a lot of snow here in Newfoundland, Canada 🇨🇦
QUESTION AND THANKS to you guys! After being inspired by you both, my sister and I tapped some trees for the first time!!! We have both black walnut trees and maples. My question is - do you find the walnut make less sap than maples? Are we doing something wrong?
Every year can be different. We're getting way more from most of our walnuts this year, than our maples. But we have one walnut that is barely giving anything.
I planted two elderberry trees last year and got a ton of berries in the summer. However, the berries are still in my freezer because I can't decide how to process them. Every recipe I find for elderberry syrup starts with dried berries but mine are frozen fresh. Should I use my steam juicer or boil them in water and strain like the recipes using dried call for? I can't decide! Would love to see you do a video on processing fresh (or frozen fresh) elderberries.
Air layering is another interesting method. You basically take the outer bark layer off a section of branch and encase it with a growing medium. The tree or bush will make roots. You cut below the air layer and plant in dirt. I successfully did this with some blue berries.@@1870s
Please let us know when they root I have only about 1/2 acre. My elderberry bush died. And I never had a gooseberry. Do you need two of them? Keep us informed. Thanks.

Good luck 🤞🏻
Very interested in your honey, plants. I'm only an hour away
You guys are blessed to be a blessing to others., thanks for sharing 2-28-2024👍🏽👍🏽❤️
Wow it's amazing how clear the sap is before cooking!
I didn't know it was so watery. interesting.😊
It really is! Like water

You guys are lucky to have found each other. My man is not interested in setting foot outdoors. sigh
😞
So many wonderful things happening on the homestead. Love seeing this.

Glad to see what's new with you guys. Love from Virginia ♥️
Yall are awesome. Thank yall for taking the time to share what you are learning!
Ooooo! I'll support your tree habit! Hope your plan works and one day I can have one of your babies in my yard!
Another rooting hormone is mint! I keep a big bag of dried around just for that
I am so excited about these new ideas, great job with all your research.
Yeah! Can't wait to purchase!
Very cool. This looks like such a neat way to develop plants
What a cool experiment. Excited to see how it goes.

I love everything you guys do together. You’re very lucky. I want to find someone who shared my interests
Wonderful!!!!! Crossing my fingers!
Cinnamon is also a good rooting hormone and prevents bacteria growth also!
I love how down your earth you guys are, I hope to add to this side of TH-cam with my channel🤍
FYI: White Willow Bark makes a great tincture for pain!
Nice to have found you! Maine woman homesteader here….I’m going to try to propagate elderberries, thanks so much for sharing your tips!
I’ll definitely buy some Gooseberry starts!
I enjoy watching your channel. I really loved seeing your two dogs at the beginning of the video. They are so cute! We recently just lost our 15 yr. Old dachshund.
I would definitely be interested in buying some plants specially Eldmary.
Love your dachshunds in the background ❤
Looks like a fun project. It’s always fun to learn new things.

Elderberry jelly is delicious!
Good info

I have done cutting for a family member..🌱

I'll def try the elderberry propagation method you showed. THANKS!!
We put our Elderberries straight in the ground and it works too.
I have tried to root elderberres in the ground and have not had one cutting root. Don't know what I am doing wrong
Can't wait to see the outcome ❤

TEN GALLONS of sap???!!! Wow!!!
in total, we've done around 75 gallons in total this year.
@@1870s what’s more: you can single handily make all the pancakes and waffles for that syrup and have a giant party.
I can't wait to see if they start growing, ❤
How exciting! I have always heard cuttings is the way to go with trees. But never took the time to dig into it more. Can’t wait to see how this works for you. Thanks for taking us along. Sure enjoy you both very much.
Elderberry jelly is premier! In great demand here in South Dakota !
Good luck ❤
Thanks for this idea. I'll have to ask around and see if anyone I know has elderberries.
So sorry but when I rooted my elderberry I just put branches in a jar of water. They rooted and I put them in a pot with soil and they grew. And grew and grew. From Ontario Canada
I tried a few times with different methods, I just haven't been successful so far. Wish you luck though hopefully you're better than me at this !
Elderberry wine! Got 14 bottles left from last year 😂
Your videos always sound great. What kind of mic do you use? And how far away does it work.
P.S. I need to find a GreenStalk shirt!!
I want to start a bush for my self. I want to look for some elderberry bushes in my area.
Great planning. Extra $$$ is handy. Do you have a deep artesian well? Free water.
Not artisan, but we have a hand dug well

you need to cut back the elderberry bushes far down after they have been in the ground for two years.
creative shot from behind !! i like the camera work!!
Thanks for sharing. Looking forward.

I wondered in your syrup making video…maybe I missed it, but how long do you boil the sap down and how do you know when it’s time to stop?
My husband and I enjoy watching your videos. Out of curiosity do you have any snow or did you record your videos in the fall. We have a lot of snow here in Newfoundland, Canada 🇨🇦

Did I spot a paratrooper T-shirt? 😊
Elderberry video throwback probably
Oh I hope this works and turns into a good side business. We all need multiple side projects in today’s economy.
Can you do the same thing with your mulberry tree?
i think so, but in the little research we did they are harder to get them to root.
@1870s ok thank you! 😊 Have a great day!
How much do you charge for the elderberry bushes?
I don't think we're going to sell online this year and ship them, but maybe. Have to see how things play out.
❤❤❤🕊️
have you looked into air-layering as a way to propagate plants/trees?
I might try that.
Not air, I've seen the one where you put rocks on the branches to hold them down to the ground.
Air layering is another interesting method. You basically take the outer bark layer off a section of branch and encase it with a growing medium. The tree or bush will make roots. You cut below the air layer and plant in dirt. I successfully did this with some blue berries.@@1870s
You can google it. Always looked interesting. Lilacs are another one I wanted to try to propagate. Number 500 something on the to-do list.
💖💖💖
So excited what ur gonna be selling I did get 2 sticks of gooseberries a 2 elderberry definitely would like to purchase more in future
🤗💗
Awesome. I made a pretty penny digging up roseofsharon and selling bateroot. I'm doing citronella and rosemary this year
Please let us know when they root I have only about 1/2 acre. My elderberry bush died. And I never had a gooseberry. Do you need two of them? Keep us informed. Thanks.
Intereated in buying your elderberry cuttings. I am an hour or so north of you all
What a great idea. Would you consider selling cuttings by mail? I've tried elderberry once and failed. Would love elder and goose on my property.
If we don't do it by mail this year, next year we probably will ♥ More info to come 😀
Nothing you 2 do is 100% Failure!!! I pray it works 100%!!! God Bless Us All!!!
