It always helps beginner guitarists if you relate the development of "licks" to chords, as they find scale patterns difficult to memorise. By playing licks/lead lines from "within" those chords they can more easily internalise them and also start to develop their own. You may, for example, relate your demonstrated licks to other chords than Em - eg Em7, G, Asus2 and maybe include reference to the most famous blues turnaround that uses Em>G>Asus2. Your demo of the lick extending up to frets 3, 4 & 5 could be cemented by telling them about the Em chord played as a Dm shape shifted up a couple of frets. If students can see the chords and then note which key notes are played as the licks/lead lines either within the chords or as extensions of them then they can progress in a more meaningful way than having to memorise scale patterns right off the bat, or imagining that there are a myriad of magical tricks to learn.
So simple and yet very musical and a great way to jam by yourself or when someone says: hey here’s a guitar, play something! Thank you for this lesson Tony 👍🎸
Even if this is basic stuff, I think Tony makes the difference by two outstanding qualities: 1. he really wants to communicate to everyone (total absence of high brow arrogance; very rare!) and 2. he manages to convey his love for music and the guitar in an absolutely natural way. Result: all of us feel welcome and happy to learn more.
