I don't have the blue caption button once I go to export. My ROLES window has the .mov "video track" and it says "embed CEA-608" with a drop down file where I can select a language. But there is no Captions button there. Is there a setting I have to turn on for that button to appear?
If I decided to do my captions in FCPX, and then put my movie up on Amazon Prime, will the captions be baked into the file, will people not be able to turn them off? Also would you know what format, SRT, or CEA, Amazon Prime will require for these captions? Thank you for your help!

I've always liked captions in films and videos. Dubbing always seems weird to me because I can see the difference between the mouth movements and the words that I hear. Not to mention the quality of the dubbing... which is often pretty poor. Captions seem more clear and straight forward to me. What I like the most is that I don't have to go somewhere else to add captions to the projects. Being able to do it in FCPX directly is a huge plus. A lot of people have bemoaned FCPX, but it's gotten progressively more & more useful. Captions is just the most recent bit.
I've got a question about file size Serge. Do you find the size of the movie with open captions is extremely large compared to the same movie with closed captions? In my case, the movie with CC is 200MB but the movie with OC is 1.9GB! Is that normal or did I miss something?
Hi Serge. I just watched your video again and saw when you selected the Apple ProRes 422 codec, the file size ballooned too. So, that explains what happened. I selected H.264 and it reduced the size down to 300 MB which I can live with. Love your tutorials, Serge. Thanks for making them.
I’m glad you solved your problem. What I do is export my videos in the pro Res format for my own archives, then compress them with handbrake for uploading online as a h264 format
I tend to use Open captions on the videos I make... maybe it is time to start considering Closed captions via srt files. Is it fundamentally wrong by the way to use Open (burnt in) captions guys?

There is another pretty convenient work around: if you share your project to vimeo, it gives you the option of burning in the closed captions on the video. This is accomplished with CEA-608 format.

I use closed captioning while watching TV or online videos when the audio quality is poor, the speakers have heavy accents, or the actors mumble their words. To answer your question about adding CC to videos, we (video producers) should at least know how to do this properly with both .srt and CEA-608 formats and which to use. I would say to always include them, at least English ones, for the reasons I stated above and for non-native English speakers so they can read along. All professional videos should have them.

Upload the video to TH-cam. 2. Get TH-cam to generate an automatically set of subtitles for your video’s dialogue. In my case this first set of subtitles was in Spanish. 3. Download the subtitles file in srt format from TH-cam. 4. Next you need to convert this srt file to a format that FCPX can read. I used the following web application to convert it to an fcpxml format file: resolver.tools/subsimple 5. Now you can import your captions as fcpxml file and these will be place in the timeline. 6. The captions automatically generated by TH-cam are far from perfect. You will need to adjust them to make sure the original language (Spanish) is correct and that the timing of the captions is suitable. 7. Once you are satisfied with your Spanish captions you can share them as an srt file, share them from FCPX to a folder in your computer. When you share, include the format and absolute timing of the subtitles. 8. Convert this srt file into an editable text file by simply changing the ending from srt to txt. 9. Next, generate an English language translation of my txt caption file. I used the translation function of google documents. It is not perfect but gives you a head start you can edit. 10. Once you finish your English subtitles, change the text file ending from txt to srt, and convert this format to the fcpxml format that FCPX can read, as in step 4 above. 11. Import your new captions fcpxml file into FCPX and edit your English subtitles. 12. When you are finished editing you can save the srt file and upload it unto youtube. Alternatively, you can save them as an srt file and keep it handy for use with your movie file. 13. Keep the absolute timing when you share your translated subtitles. You may want to also keep the formatting, except if you are uploading your subtitles to TH-cam, in which case the formatting needs to be omitted.

Thanks for that. The only thing I disagree on is converting from an SRT format. FCPX accepts SRT files now
