I am surprized that I watched the entire video despite being very familiar with Russian chain supermarkets. The reason the video was so compelling was your two personalities and speaking voices being so calm and pleasant. Most Brits I meet in Russia are sarcastic and belittling Russians. I am an American who has lived in St Petersburg 21 years and love it. For a large city is amazingly comfortable and friendly.I live in the historic city center so large supermarkets and modern construction do not disturb the classic architecture. Most of the food shops are small neighborhood specialty stores for various food items like a shop across the street that only has tea, hundreds of types, another has only farm-fresh dairy products like Smetana, a type of sour cream that is used in a lot of foods or as a condiment, others just have pet food or the 4 bakeries on one block. Since the US forced other countries to block trade with Russia, the food products from within Russia have become much better, and even if the sanctions were dropped I doubt anyone would bay the higher prices lower quality imports. Finland used to have a thriving dairy industry and St Petersburg alone consumed more than all Finland combined. When that was blocked in 2014, the Russian dairy, cheese, and beef rapidly developed such that instead of importing so much Russia is a net exporter of food and the world's largest now of wheat.. All the foodstuff/crops are non-GMO and are organic so the exports are finding good demand in other countries. If you ever get up to St Petersburg I would be pleased to show you around and the unlimited access to culture with live theater, ballet, opera, symphonies, museums, etc
I was in Russia visiting a friend about 2 years ago (June-July, 2019). Traveled to Ninny-Novgorad, St. Petersburg, and Moscow. I had previously (20-25 years ago) been in Moscow, Yekatrinburg, and Perm. I compared prices and wages while I was there 2 years ago and found them pretty comparable. My friend (a university teacher) could live fairly on a salary of $15,000 - $20,000 per year. She had a nice size 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment (over 1500 sqft) plus another apartment she owned that she could rent out. People were driving recent model cars and going out to eat. Anyone who thinks Russians are poor or don't live a decent lifestyle are mistaken.
Yes, $20,000/yr before taxes is absolutely OK in Russia (if you have no extended family dependent on you of course). It allows you to pay out mortgage, get a car and of course food and clothes, go abroad for vacation. But you are, like, financially tight: no room for maneuver. If you have got your apartment/home w/o mortgage (e.g. inherited from your granny) it is quite another story and you can make about 10-12,000/yr and be happy. The real socio-economical problem here is that the majority of the population earns less than that, and there is a lot of jobs paying ~$6,000/yr. Lot of people are not broke but definitely poor. The cheap electricity, cheap water, cheap heating and free medical services are the safety net here. However this class is stuck in their apartments, usually live with their parents, have no car (or a hideously unreliable one), do not eat healthy enough food, etc. If we solve this problem, _then_ Russia would be a truly great place to live.
@@smb2a587 What really kills living wages in America is not rent, it is car insurance and health insurance. And if you own a home, mortgage insurance. And these go up every year, sometimes astronomically. This is the real issue in America that needs to be solved. But the Republican party here refuses to nationalize health insurance or reign in the insurance industry robber barons. Otherwise, its a better system. Once comment that needs to be made is that you cannot compare the largest cities in Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg, etc) with Russian life out in the greater country, where much of it is dirt poor. Putin has subsidized Moscow as a "show piece", in much the way that North Korea creates its fake, empty cities ("Peace Village", etc) to create a false facade to outsiders with tour guides taken on a very strict path. I'm not saying Moscow isn't real of course, I'm just saying it does not represent the standard of living or the conditions for 90+% of the rest of Russia. So its a bit of a "show piece" where westerners travel to and are "impressed" by how modern and clean "Russia" is, not knowing that its a whole different story when you step outside the city limits.

I can safely say the same bottle of Jim Beam here in Texas is like $15.00. A half gallon or 2 liter of vodka can be anywhere from $16.00 to $40.00 .Prices for the most part average out close to the same . Nice to see such well stocked and modern stores..I want to visit Russia soon ..Peace from the U.S.A.
A quick google search of 2020 household annual income reveals that Russia averages close to $15k vs US $65k. Prices may be similar, but not in relation to income.

In 1993 I worked in Russia and Siberia! At that time their economy was in shambles, their stores were a sorry sight. To see that things have improved over the decades is a joy to my heart. Now their stores look like American stores. I set aside political ideologies when I talk of the Russian people. As people they are good people, when I lived there in the early 1990’s they were gracious hosts, looked out for me and steered me from potentially bad situations! If they liked and trusted you, they would give the shirt off their back and last food from their cupboard. The rest of my life I will remember Russias legendary hospitality. Fine people, to bad governments and political ideology get in the mix! Glad to see things are better than when I was there!
Putin said that the middle class is people who have an income of $200 a month. You saw the prices in the store and what you can buy for $100 a month, the other $100 you have to pay for water, gas, electricity. Why do you write such nonsense.

Seeing the dirty veg versus the clean reminds me of something. I was once volunteering to bag of veg for donations. The veg was fresh from the farm. This lady I was working with made a comment about how disgusting it was that we were giving people dirty veg. I tried explaining that it would make it more expensive to wash it and we wouldn’t be able to help as many people. She never really got it. 🤦♀️😂
Not washed veg can stay fresh longer,I always buy unwashed and store it in the fridge without washing the dirt off,also every time I buy unwashed carrots they always taste better,more flavour,dirt bacteria in veggies actually is where we get many vitamins from,our body gets the right amount of bacteria and produces vitamins such as B12 and other B vitamins you can't find anywhere else but in organic lightly rinsed veggies that still have dirt bacteria,for that reason western countries have extreme vitamin B deficiencies,our ancestors used to lightly rinse the veggies,eat potatoes or carrots with the skin. I don't understand ppls fear of microbes,3% of our weight is microbes,they are responsible for our health,they strengthen our immune system,ppl who fear them are doing the opposite of what they are thinking,they are weakening their own immune systems, strengthening the bad bacteria,destroying their gut flora,washed veggies sold also end up being the least of organic,they are the ones laced with chemicals. I used to buy fully washed veggies when I realized even if I leave them in damp area they will never mold or go bad,flies wouldn't touch them,idk what they are washing them with,all I know that simple things like garlic is sprayed with a chemical that stops it from sprouting,usually imported Chinese garlic never grows and can spread many diseases and pests to other plants.
This just proves not everyone washes their food...people have gotten so used to buying food in supermarket that they have stopped doing the basics and expect the stores will do this 🤔...why? People are just too trusting nowadays..doesn't hurt to wash your food again 😒

While researching Russia/Ukraine issues on you tube I ran across your channel. I have watched several of your videos and want to thank you sincerely. I am truly fascinated by the availability of products on the shelves in a Russian grocery store. Living in the center of the USA, I can honestly say the store you walked through had more diversity of products than any I have seen in the heart of Walmart country! Most prices were comparable, relative to the dollar. Great video!

My mind is blown! I remember all those old pictures of Russians waiting in bread lines and empty shelves in the stores. I was so impressed with the selections of foods and the prepared entrees and salads were fantastic.
During the time of Soviet Union "bread lines" wasn't because of bread deficit. Many people loved to buy a fresh baked bread, so they came to a bakery at specific time and was waiting for a warm bread. True deficit started with Perestroika and Gorbachev's reforms.
WOW what an interesting video! I had no idea that stores in Russia had such a huge variety of products, and prices seem very reasonable. I can still remember years ago when people there waited for hours in line for a loaf of bread. No wonder Putin keeps getting reelected, people must be pretty happy there. I had to laugh when the British guy held that bag of milk in his hand, because I thought it was only us Canadians who did that. Except our bags of milk are sold in 3s in a bigger plastic bag. The Americans would laugh at us Canadians for having our milk in the bags. The cost of our milk varies from region to region kind of like Russia. We also have milk that comes in a carton box in a quart or a 1/2 pint size. ( On a side note the bag of milk comes with a milk jug or picture where you put the bag of milk into before cutting a small rip to pour the milk out. ) Great video! 🇨🇦 😊👍

I was in Russia for 3 weeks during the 2018 football World Cup. Wonderful, diverse, people, with an immense culture. Overall they live pretty well. At least in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Sochi. Yes, it's relative. But that's the case here in the USA. Count your blessings if you can make a living where food, drink, medical care, and shelter is attainable with work.
Everyone has access to good education and college, medical care and housing plus great public transport and access to culture so it is a far more liable place than the current-day USA. I visited back home to California for the first time in 7 years in October and November 2021 and it shocked me how stressed everyone was then the extreme cost of living so everyone was one illness or loss of a job from being homeless. It was uncomfortable to be around so many people who were living with so much stress, and they were middle class.
Amazing! The contemporary Russian grocery store is far cry from the old USSR (at least the old common criticism). It's better than the grocery stores around me. The partially-cleaned produce is a great idea. Thanks for the eye-opening video.

I was born in NYC, my parents were immigrants from Croatia (Yugoslavia at the time). I've been to Europe many times over the years. When I first started traveling to Europe as a boy in the 70s I noticed how much poorer everything in Europe seemed to be compared to America, and now it's the reverse.

Everything's so much cheaper than here in Vancouver, Canada, and there are so many varieties! Our supermarkets have so many empty shelves these days, food prices gone up like 10% just compared to right before Christmas. I really enjoyed your shopping trip, reminded me of the good old days when we could still find stuff on the shelves in our stores lol.
I think what you see and don't see has a lot to do with the places you shop. Most of the stores I shop have the same products and in stock. I shop at a variety of markets.
Not only prices in Russia lower, but salary dramatically lower also. Average month salary after tax is about 500-600$. Half people in country have income 400$ or less (median average salary is 32 422 rubles for 2021, about 433$ US)
Does anyone else notice how neat and clean everything is? Next time you are in your local store think about that. Russian stores and restaurants tend to pay attention to things like presentation and cleanliness. The first time I went into McDonalds in Moscow I was blown away at how clean it was and how quick and courteous the staff were. It was like a showroom version of the dumps in America and the staff were so far above the apathetic, slovenly people in an American McDonalds.
Well stocked store. American grocery stores are running low on items and some items are sold out. Supply chain in America is broken for various reasons.
I love seeing this type of video and learning what other countries sell - this one really surprised me as the Supermarket was very similar to the supermarkets in the UK - both how it looked and what they sold - prices were similar too. It was a much more familiar environment than the USA ones are which did surprise me.
I live in eastern Washington state and the snow has a huge impact on goods here. Shelves have been empty. The freeway on the western side and in the state of Montana to our east was closed because of too much snow and avalanche’s. Winter is not going away anytime soon. 🌨❄️🌬☃️
It sounds a little funny here in Russia, if our stores were empty because of the snow))))), it would be quite rare and it's rather nonsense, only in the Far North, where there are no roads, on islands and peninsulas, where there is only air traffic, only there is such and such a rarity, because products are delivered there in advance and mostly on icebreakers and there are very few people.
I live in Siberia, the city of Krasnoyarsk. our snow is not a problem for logistics, it is cleaned very often. only traffic jams are due to a large amount of snow. There are no empty shelves in stores. hang in there guys.)) and all the stereotypes about hungry Russians and empty mvgazines are fairy tales.

Very nice video. I'm in Michigan, USA and our local grocery stores have inflated so much during Covid that for just a small beef roast is $70.00. Our gallons of milk went from $2.79 to almost 4.00. Our cheese is still a good price and to rent a place to live its almost $2,000 a month. I think housing went up real high when marijuana became legal. Most jobs here are now paying $15.00 a hour or more but everyone making good wages still live in poverty because of the inflation. Thank you for showing us around. Considering where Russia was a mere 20 years ago, they have every reason to feel proud how far they, I.e. the Russians, have come!! Just like the world over, things could be or could’ve been much, much better and there’re still problems; yet, Russia has made huge progress. What impresses me most is Russia’s penchant for import substitution and their strategic thinking of self-reliance and non-dependence on foreign goods! I hope they focus more on production of consumer goods, raising standard of living of Russians and not the distraction of pursuing arms race and geo-political nonsense going on now! This supermarket is located on the outskirts of Sochi, in the Adler district. 30 years ago, there was a poultry farm on the site of this supermarket. When I heard black black bread, I was surprised, I thought you didn't use the word black out of political correctness.
You are partically right, the word "black" has additional meaning "bad" in Russian. So the bread is more often named "dark bread", wheares Afro peaple are named "black-skinned" or just "negr" from the Spanish word "negro" meaning "black".

Great video as always guys! Just a quick note about the imported beer prices...for example, that Bud was most likely brewed in Russia so that's why the price isn't that different compared to Baltika. The only thing imported on a lot of those beers is the rights to use the brand. Happy New Year!
Real Budweiser, not the American stuff, is from Budweiss in the former Czechoslovakia. In order to sell the A-B product there, they have to call it "Bud".
The only beer imported besides some creft beer is Guinness which is why it is more expensive in the pubs. In my adopted city of S Petersburg, there are about 500 English-style pubs and all have a wide variety on tap. I never drank beer before moving to Russia and now enjoy many types particularly the unfiltered Wheat. I grew up in the wine region of California so from 5yo on I has a small glass of wine with dinner, it was cheaper than milk then. The major brands of European beer is brewed here in Russia. The only American brands I see are some craft beer but I doubt Russians or Europeans would drink what American brands have been. The Bud is not the US brand but a very old brand from the Czech Republic

Yes, I enjoyed the walk in the supermarket! I could live there and still eat good. I was looking for items that I buy here and I was surprised that some were about the same price that I would pay here. The American beer that I like here is even cheaper there! 🤔 I am one that would try the local brands, if I like I would buy again. That was a very nice clean store. Just have to decide when will I move there...

Why are you surprised that Russian people look sober? They are sober. We, in Russia, have not had drunks on the streets for a long time. For about fifteen years now. And in European countries, people drink more alcohol than Russians. What are these strange stereotypes about Russians? The only truth is that Russians are strict. Russians smile only if there is a reason or only to acquaintances. The smile of the Russians is sincere, not because it is necessary. We smile only when we want and to whom we want. We are the freest people. And it's very safe here. Come to Russia to learn more about our country.

That is how smiles were everywhere unil in the US in the last 1930s a few film stars were directed to have smales for no reason and i became common by the 1950s and by 1970 a waiter without a minless smile would not get tips and they lived on tips.The US is not a happy place some think because of smiles, they are required and someone can get fired if they do not have hat goofy insincere smile all the time. Overall however the US now is the angriest and most divided country I have seen in my travels to 91 countries from my native USA. Yes, this is true. This is how it looks like. I can say it looks like only for Moscow because I was there. But the small grocery stores 20 km from the center of the town had similar products. I found many types of Slovak and Czech beers there. I felt like at home. Great video, thanks.

The size of the store and amount of product in what looks like fully-stocked shelves is quite surprising! I was on tour in Russia back in mid-90s and went to a couple grocery markets like you would see on a farm- very small. Was sort of a general store with basic canned goods, jars, cloth packs of flour or staples and bread with no packaging on it. But that was a small town. There was an average-sized farmer's market also that was in a small city, but we saw nothing like this! It looks possibly larger than a Walmart in the US and has many varities of choices. I'm soooo glad you two made this video. I was under the impression that the typical stores in Russia having long lines, people fighting over couple loaves of bread and shelves mostly bare except for a few items. My problem with this video was that mostly Russians have the same food as we do in the United States except with more varieties from other countries. For example, yes they have the same foods as we do such as wine but they also have access to wines from other countries. In most grocery stores I have been too they only have American wines, for example. What scares me about this video is how easily it would be for me to adapt to Russian life and shopping. Tom Sisson
Looking at the mega version of Walmart in Russia. The store was well stocked with a lot of items. Here in the U.S. we've had some supply chain issues do to lack of staff. Russia is stocked well cause they don't have a ton of money to spend tho. Their low wages don't really adjust to inflation well. Their economy in general isnt doing to well; its why they have edgy tensions with Ukraine. In the US, I've noticed a lot of our stores stocked fine, really. Just increased prices only, thats about it. Only those 2 occurrences of boomers when they run out of toilet paper, some reason people love buying out TP... THe problem with the US, it has a lot of "CHEAP" food and "overpriced" organic buzzword type food. For russians in general, they are better off buying their own "home' brand foods as its a lot cheaper and fits with their wages ok, as imports are too expensive; and their fruits/veges are always extremely priced high(reminds me of alaska which is triple priced for all goods if not more lol cause of remote ice region, so like russia basically for vege/fruits.
Personaly i hate going shoping, even when it comes to grocerys. Theres just to many choices to choose from (nowa days ) that u cant resist, and i end up spending a lot more than i was planing to. Great video again guys.
The state of Wisconsin in USA sells milk in bags also and they give you a plastic pitcher that fits the bag in it for pouring. Wisconsin is known as America's dairyland. I love watching videos of everyday situations in other countries! Thank you😊

This store makes a local Kroger store in Irving, Texas (DFW area) look like a convenience store. And the shelves are AMPLY stocked in comparison to some empty shelves at Kroger.

1st thing I noticed is how clean and well organized the markets in the RU are compared to Mexico or the US, The 2nd thing I see is how well stocked they are! US stores began scaling back the variety of products a few years ago, inflation is sky high and the "supply chain" crisis is causing shortages. I do believe the "crisis" is manufactured though as we have 100's of ships anchored off the Westcoast waiting to be unloaded. I also don't like buying imported food or goods from Communist China.
Jami, I'm with you completely on not buy goods from Red China, I think part of the reason for the empty shelves in U.S. store is "withdrawal symptoms" from Chinese goods. There are other factors, to be sure, like the pandemic, but we've become overly dependent on crap from China and now we need to kick the habit.
The vast majority of Americans I know do not want to be enemies with Russia.

I am surprized that I watched the entire video despite being very familiar with Russian chain supermarkets. The reason the video was so compelling was your two personalities and speaking voices being so calm and pleasant. Most Brits I meet in Russia are sarcastic and belittling Russians. I am an American who has lived in St Petersburg 21 years and love it. For a large city is amazingly comfortable and friendly.I live in the historic city center so large supermarkets and modern construction do not disturb the classic architecture. Most of the food shops are small neighborhood specialty stores for various food items like a shop across the street that only has tea, hundreds of types, another has only farm-fresh dairy products like Smetana, a type of sour cream that is used in a lot of foods or as a condiment, others just have pet food or the 4 bakeries on one block. Since the US forced other countries to block trade with Russia, the food products from within Russia have become much better, and even if the sanctions were dropped I doubt anyone would bay the higher prices lower quality imports. Finland used to have a thriving dairy industry and St Petersburg alone consumed more than all Finland combined. When that was blocked in 2014, the Russian dairy, cheese, and beef rapidly developed such that instead of importing so much Russia is a net exporter of food and the world's largest now of wheat.. All the foodstuff/crops are non-GMO and are organic so the exports are finding good demand in other countries.

I was in Russia visiting a friend about 2 years ago (June-July, 2019). Traveled to Ninny-Novgorad, St. Petersburg, and Moscow. I had previously (20-25 years ago) been in Moscow, Yekatrinburg, and Perm. I compared prices and wages while I was there 2 years ago and found them pretty comparable. My friend (a university teacher) could live fairly on a salary of $15,000 - $20,000 per year. She had a nice size 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment (over 1500 sqft) plus another apartment she owned that she could rent out. People were driving recent model cars and going out to eat. Anyone who thinks Russians are poor or don't live a decent lifestyle are mistaken.
Yes, $20,000/yr before taxes is absolutely OK in Russia (if you have no extended family dependent on you of course). It allows you to pay out mortgage, get a car and of course food and clothes, go abroad for vacation. But you are, like, financially tight: no room for maneuver. If you have got your apartment/home w/o mortgage (e.g. inherited from your granny) it is quite another story and you can make about 10-12,000/yr and be happy.
The real socio-economical problem here is that the majority of the population earns less than that, and there is a lot of jobs paying ~$6,000/yr. Lot of people are not broke but definitely poor. The cheap electricity, cheap water, cheap heating and free medical services are the safety net here. However this class is stuck in their apartments, usually live with their parents, have no car (or a hideously unreliable one), do not eat healthy enough food, etc. If we solve this problem, _then_ Russia would be a truly great place to live.

@@smb2a587 What really kills living wages in America is not rent, it is car insurance and health insurance. And if you own a home, mortgage insurance. And these go up every year, sometimes astronomically. This is the real issue in America that needs to be solved. But the Republican party here refuses to nationalize health insurance or reign in the insurance industry robber barons. Otherwise, its a better system. Once comment that needs to be made is that you cannot compare the largest cities in Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg, etc) with Russian life out in the greater country, where much of it is dirt poor. Putin has subsidized Moscow as a "show piece", in much the way that North Korea creates its fake, empty cities ("Peace Village", etc) to create a false facade to outsiders with tour guides taken on a very strict path. I'm not saying Moscow isn't real of course, I'm just saying it does not represent the standard of living or the conditions for 90+% of the rest of Russia. So its a bit of a "show piece" where westerners travel to and are "impressed" by how modern and clean "Russia" is, not knowing that its a whole different story when you step outside the city limits.

A quick google search of 2020 household annual income reveals that Russia averages close to $15k vs US $65k. Prices may be similar, but not in relation to income.

Now their stores look like American stores. I set aside political ideologies when I talk of the Russian people. As people they are good people, when I lived there in the early 1990’s they were gracious hosts, looked out for me and steered me from potentially bad situations! If they liked and trusted you, they would give the shirt off their back and last food from their cupboard. The rest of my life I will remember Russias legendary hospitality. Fine people, to bad governments and political ideology get in the mix! Glad to see things are better than when I was there!

Seeing the dirty veg versus the clean reminds me of something. I was once volunteering to bag of veg for donations. The veg was fresh from the farm. This lady I was working with made a comment about how disgusting it was that we were giving people dirty veg. I tried explaining that it would make it more expensive to wash it and we wouldn’t be able to help as many people. She never really got it. 🤦♀️😂
Not washed veg can stay fresh longer,I always buy unwashed and store it in the fridge without washing the dirt off,also every time I buy unwashed carrots they always taste better,more flavour,dirt bacteria in veggies actually is where we get many vitamins from,our body gets the right amount of bacteria and produces vitamins such as B12 and other B vitamins you can't find anywhere else but in organic lightly rinsed veggies that still have dirt bacteria,for that reason western countries have extreme vitamin B deficiencies,our ancestors used to lightly rinse the veggies,eat potatoes or carrots with the skin. I don't understand ppls fear of microbes,3% of our weight is microbes,they are responsible for our health,they strengthen our immune system,ppl who fear them are doing the opposite of what they are thinking,they are weakening their own immune systems, strengthening the bad bacteria,destroying their gut flora,washed veggies sold also end up being the least of organic,they are the ones laced with chemicals. I used to buy fully washed veggies when I realized even if I leave them in damp area they will never mold or go bad,flies wouldn't touch them,idk what they are washing them with,all I know that simple things like garlic is sprayed with a chemical that stops it from sprouting,usually imported Chinese garlic never grows and can spread many diseases and pests to other plants.
This just proves not everyone washes their food...people have gotten so used to buying food in supermarket that they have stopped doing the basics and expect the stores will do this 🤔...why? People are just too trusting nowadays..doesn't hurt to wash your food again 😒

While researching Russia/Ukraine issues on you tube I ran across your channel. I have watched several of your videos and want to thank you sincerely. I am truly fascinated by the availability of products on the shelves in a Russian grocery store. Living in the center of the USA, I can honestly say the store you walked through had more diversity of products than any I have seen in the heart of Walmart country! Most prices were comparable, relative to the dollar. Great video!

My mind is blown! I remember all those old pictures of Russians waiting in bread lines and empty shelves in the stores. I was so impressed with the selections of foods and the prepared entrees and salads were fantastic.

During the time of Soviet Union "bread lines" wasn't because of bread deficit. Many people loved to buy a fresh baked bread, so they came to a bakery at specific time and was waiting for a warm bread. True deficit started with Perestroika and Gorbachev's reforms.

I had to laugh when the British guy held that bag of milk in his hand, because I thought it was only us Canadians who did that. Except our bags of milk are sold in 3s in a bigger plastic bag. The Americans would laugh at us Canadians for having our milk in the bags. The cost of our milk varies from region to region kind of like Russia. We also have milk that comes in a carton box in a quart or a 1/2 pint size. ( On a side note the bag of milk comes with a milk jug or picture where you put the bag of milk into before cutting a small rip to pour the milk out. ) Great video! 🇨🇦 😊👍

I was in Russia for 3 weeks during the 2018 football World Cup. Wonderful, diverse, people, with an immense culture. Overall they live pretty well. At least in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Sochi.
Yes, it's relative. But that's the case here in the USA. Count your blessings if you can make a living where food, drink, medical care, and shelter is attainable with work.
Everyone has access to good education and college, medical care and housing plus great public transport and access to culture so it is a far more liable place than the current-day USA. I visited back home to California for the first time in 7 years in October and November 2021 and it shocked me how stressed everyone was then the extreme cost of living so everyone was one illness or loss of a job from being homeless. It was uncomfortable to be around so many people who were living with so much stress, and they were middle class.
Amazing! The contemporary Russian grocery store is far cry from the old USSR (at least the old common criticism). It's better than the grocery stores around me. The partially-cleaned produce is a great idea. Thanks for the eye-opening video.

I was born in NYC, my parents were immigrants from Croatia (Yugoslavia at the time). I've been to Europe many times over the years. When I first started traveling to Europe as a boy in the 70s I noticed how much poorer everything in Europe seemed to be compared to America, and now it's the reverse.

Everything's so much cheaper than here in Vancouver, Canada, and there are so many varieties! Our supermarkets have so many empty shelves these days, food prices gone up like 10% just compared to right before Christmas. I really enjoyed your shopping trip, reminded me of the good old days when we could still find stuff on the shelves in our stores lol.

I think what you see and don't see has a lot to do with the places you shop. Most of the stores I shop have the same products and in stock. I shop at a variety of markets.

Not only prices in Russia lower, but salary dramatically lower also. Average month salary after tax is about 500-600$. Half people in country have income 400$ or less (median average salary is 32 422 rubles for 2021, about 433$ US)

Does anyone else notice how neat and clean everything is? Next time you are in your local store think about that. Russian stores and restaurants tend to pay attention to things like presentation and cleanliness. The first time I went into McDonalds in Moscow I was blown away at how clean it was and how quick and courteous the staff were. It was like a showroom version of the dumps in America and the staff were so far above the apathetic, slovenly people in an American McDonalds.
For any non-compliance with sanitary standards, Rospotrebnadzor, or Trade Inspection( Controlling organization)will issue a fine.

I love seeing this type of video and learning what other countries sell - this one really surprised me as the Supermarket was very similar to the supermarkets in the UK - both how it looked and what they sold - prices were similar too. It was a much more familiar environment than the USA ones are which did surprise me.

I live in eastern Washington state and the snow has a huge impact on goods here. Shelves have been empty. The freeway on the western side and in the state of Montana to our east was closed because of too much snow and avalanche’s. Winter is not going away anytime soon. 🌨❄️🌬☃️
It sounds a little funny here in Russia, if our stores were empty because of the snow))))), it would be quite rare and it's rather nonsense, only in the Far North, where there are no roads, on islands and peninsulas, where there is only air traffic, only there is such and such a rarity, because products are delivered there in advance and mostly on icebreakers and there are very few people.
I live in Siberia, the city of Krasnoyarsk. our snow is not a problem for logistics, it is cleaned very often. only traffic jams are due to a large amount of snow. There are no empty shelves in stores. hang in there guys.)) and all the stereotypes about hungry Russians and empty mvgazines are fairy tales.

Very nice video. I'm in Michigan, USA and our local grocery stores have inflated so much during Covid that for just a small beef roast is $70.00. Our gallons of milk went from $2.79 to almost 4.00. Our cheese is still a good price and to rent a place to live its almost $2,000 a month. I think housing went up real high when marijuana became legal. Most jobs here are now paying $15.00 a hour or more but everyone making good wages still live in poverty because of the inflation. Thank you for showing us around. Considering where Russia was a mere 20 years ago, they have every reason to feel proud how far they, I.e. the Russians, have come!! Just like the world over, things could be or could’ve been much, much better and there’re still problems; yet, Russia has made huge progress. What impresses me most is Russia’s penchant for import substitution and their strategic thinking of self-reliance and non-dependence on foreign goods! I hope they focus more on production of consumer goods, raising standard of living of Russians and not the distraction of pursuing arms race and geo-political nonsense going on now! Nice and very informative video, I must say!!

This supermarket is located on the outskirts of Sochi, in the Adler district. 30 years ago, there was a poultry farm on the site of this supermarket. Across the street from this supermarket is the Adler Arboretum, an ancient park with a lot of interesting exotic plants.

You are partically right, the word "black" has additional meaning "bad" in Russian. So the bread is more often named "dark bread", wheares Afro peaple are named "black-skinned" or just "negr" from the Spanish word "negro" meaning "black".

Great video as always guys! Just a quick note about the imported beer prices...for example, that Bud was most likely brewed in Russia so that's why the price isn't that different compared to Baltika. The only thing imported on a lot of those beers is the rights to use the brand. Happy New Year!

The only beer imported besides some creft beer is Guinness which is why it is more expensive in the pubs. In my adopted city of S Petersburg, there are about 500 English-style pubs and all have a wide variety on tap. I never drank beer before moving to Russia and now enjoy many types particularly the unfiltered Wheat. I grew up in the wine region of California so from 5yo on I has a small glass of wine with dinner, it was cheaper than milk then. The major brands of European beer is brewed here in Russia. The only American brands I see are some craft beer but I doubt Russians or Europeans would drink what American brands have been. The Bud is not the US brand but a very old brand from the Czech Republic
As a Canadian it made me feel very at home to see that bagged milk!

Yes, I enjoyed the walk in the supermarket! I could live there and still eat good. I was looking for items that I buy here and I was surprised that some were about the same price that I would pay here. The American beer that I like here is even cheaper there! 🤔 I am one that would try the local brands, if I like I would buy again. That was a very nice clean store. Just have to decide when will I move there...

And in European countries, people drink more alcohol than Russians. What are these strange stereotypes about Russians? The only truth is that Russians are strict. Russians smile only if there is a reason or only to acquaintances. The smile of the Russians is sincere, not because it is necessary. We smile only when we want and to whom we want. We are the freest people. And it's very safe here. Come to Russia to learn more about our country.

That is how smiles were everywhere unil in the US in the last 1930s a few film stars were directed to have smales for no reason and i became common by the 1950s and by 1970 a waiter without a minless smile would not get tips and they lived on tips.The US is not a happy place some think because of smiles, they are required and someone can get fired if they do not have hat goofy insincere smile all the time. Overall however the US now is the angriest and most divided country I have seen in my travels to 91 countries from my native USA. I moved to Russia, to beautiful highly cultured St Petersburg full time in 2000.ussia is a more polite respectful and well-manered country.

Yes, this is true. This is how it looks like. I can say it looks like only for Moscow because I was there. But the small grocery stores 20 km from the center of the town had similar products. I found many types of Slovak and Czech beers there. I felt like at home. Great video, thanks.

The size of the store and amount of product in what looks like fully-stocked shelves is quite surprising! I was on tour in Russia back in mid-90s and went to a couple grocery markets like you would see on a farm- very small. Was sort of a general store with basic canned goods, jars, cloth packs of flour or staples and bread with no packaging on it. But that was a small town. There was an average-sized farmer's market also that was in a small city, but we saw nothing like this! It looks possibly larger than a Walmart in the US and has many varities of choices. Interesting how things have changed. Thanks for the tour!

My problem with this video was that mostly Russians have the same food as we do in the United States except with more varieties from other countries. For example, yes they have the same foods as we do such as wine but they also have access to wines from other countries. In most grocery stores I have been too they only have American wines, for example. What scares me about this video is how easily it would be for me to adapt to Russian life and shopping.

There are much more food stores in the russian cities than in the USA. Not surprise if to find 5-6 ones in row or in 5 minutes from home.

Russia is stocked well cause they don't have a ton of money to spend tho. Their low wages don't really adjust to inflation well. Their economy in general isnt doing to well; its why they have edgy tensions with Ukraine.
In the US, I've noticed a lot of our stores stocked fine, really. Just increased prices only, thats about it. Only those 2 occurrences of boomers when they run out of toilet paper, some reason people love buying out TP... THe problem with the US, it has a lot of "CHEAP" food and "overpriced" organic buzzword type food. For russians in general, they are better off buying their own "home' brand foods as its a lot cheaper and fits with their wages ok, as imports are too expensive; and their fruits/veges are always extremely priced high(reminds me of alaska which is triple priced for all goods if not more lol cause of remote ice region, so like russia basically for vege/fruits.

The state of Wisconsin in USA sells milk in bags also and they give you a plastic pitcher that fits the bag in it for pouring. Wisconsin is known as America's dairyland. I love watching videos of everyday situations in other countries! Thank you😊

Great video, just one of the myriad reasons for loving the internet and most of all the tube, seeing things that you only could imagine a generation ago, looks to me like things are going pretty well in Russia, I feel anxious about our future in the US, incompetent leadership is taking a toll on everything.
This store makes a local Kroger store in Irving, Texas (DFW area) look like a convenience store. And the shelves are AMPLY stocked in comparison to some empty shelves at Kroger.

1st thing I noticed is how clean and well organized the markets in the RU are compared to Mexico or the US, The 2nd thing I see is how well stocked they are! US stores began scaling back the variety of products a few years ago, inflation is sky high and the "supply chain" crisis is causing shortages. I do believe the "crisis" is manufactured though as we have 100's of ships anchored off the Westcoast waiting to be unloaded. I also don't like buying imported food or goods from Communist China.

Jami, I'm with you completely on not buy goods from Red China, I think part of the reason for the empty shelves in U.S. store is "withdrawal symptoms" from Chinese goods. There are other factors, to be sure, like the pandemic, but we've become overly dependent on crap from China and now we need to kick the habit.
