      @@jacksprat418-ju5qo No Jack. Just a realist that knows free health care in the U.S. is so unlikely. They only got a watered down version of Obama care, you really think free care for everyone is a reality?

    Planet Claire is like a short scifi movie depicted almost entirely through music. India, your reaction when Fred sang loudly "BUT SHE ISN'T!" cracked me up! Claire really isn't from one of the seven stars that shine after 3:30 in the morning and we'd all do well to remember that, lol! God bless you and the B-52s!

    The B52s were a party band that brought all the camp from 60s bad Sci-Fi movies and 60s beach party bingo genre into a fun tacky schmaltz.
    The error people have with them is taking them too seriously. They never took themselves seriously, but they did create some fun funky music.

      @Joseph Nickell "get a life"? How about "Learn to read"... I don't recall saying I was doing drugs, I said doing lines was the predominate drug of choice in the 80s... I never even drank alcohol, I was serving in the USAF in the 80s... learn a little how the English language works before you set off on strangers on the internet from your high horse of self-righteousness! So glad to hear you preach when you don't even understand what people are saying.

    • @wolfshanze5980
      @wolfshanze5980 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Joseph Nickell lolz... wow, that's one hell of a great attitude you have there... kiss your mother with that mouth? Apparently you spent most of your life preaching to others about your greatness and telling others how to live while cussing them out... what a real character you are... and liking your own comments is pretty fucking lame pal... when you stop acting like a 12 year old on the internet and grow up into a big boy, let me know... they really need to stop letting children on the internet.

    I'll never forget the house party I attended back in 1983 where the parents of some kid's house went away and trusted their son to not have a party. Big mistake. There were holes in the ceiling and a bathroom sink on the floor by the end of the night due to songs like Planet Claire that we partied to back in those days. I always wondered what happened to that kid when his parents returned home on Sunday night? It actually was a Party Out of Bounds!

  • @colibri1
    @colibri1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The bass riff in this was cribbed from Henry Mancini's 1958 "Peter Gunn Theme." And yep, retro is right. This song was first performed in the late seventies, when the band was doing an early sixties revival sound, a trend among some underground bands of the time like the Revillos, mod revival bands, ska revival bands, etc. As you can see here, they even dressed in early sixties styles, like bouffant wigs etc. And the B52s were obsessed with, like, 1950s and 60s sci-fi films, hence the theme of this song. Other songs by them with a retro-sci-fi feel include "There's a Moon in the Sky (Called the Moon)", "53 Miles West of Venus", and "Trism".

      I also loved/love Gong and Steve Hillage.
      It's such a shame that some of these "reaction" Vloggers missed out on the 'actual' experience of hearing this stuff at the time it actually came out, set against the global events and local societal values that were around then... and without all the intervening stuff that owes so much to what came before.

    You should do rock lobster by the same band. That’s the biggest hit

      I'd have thought Love Shack would be their biggest hit.

      Rock Lobster is my favorite but I'm pretty sure Love Shack was their biggest hit. Love Shack, as good as it is, was played so often I got tired of hearing it.

      I don't disagree with you there, though I've always been partial to Roam.

    B-52's are a fun party band out of the creative and experimental music scene that was going on in Athens, Ga., at the time. 40 years ago in 1980.. Still bizarre and great after all these years..

    This is one great thing about the internet and youtube in particular. The younger generations are grooving on the music from my salad days- I know every generation says this but I say this with complete confidence- us Gen X'ers had the best pop music. We had a lot of crap, too but we had so much great stuff.

    There is so much about this band that I love... short list
    Ricky Wilson on that blue 4 string Mosrite guitar, pure genius as evidenced in songs like Private Idaho
    Cindy and Kate, when they sing together, now that is otherworldly
    Favorite songs... Roam and Dance this Mess Around

    The B-52's - Planet Claire - 1979
    It was originally recorded in 1978, then re-recorded and released in July 1979.
    This Band are in my Top 5 of all time.
    They are serious fun and the epitome of quirky.
    I first saw them in June 1980 in Sydney, at The Capitol Theatre, they played tracks from their 2nd album WILD PLANET.
    They played " ROCK LOBSTER " LIVE on COUNTDOWN, it was crazy when Fred crumpled to the floor when the lyrics said " Down, Down " and his hat went skewiff.
    This band bring joy into my heart n soul.
    The 2nd time I saw them was in 2004 at The Hordern Pavilion in Sydney.
    My highlight of that gig was " QUICHE LORRAINE "
    I recommend that people listen to " 53 Miles West of Venus " from WILD PLANET, it is a great Rock tune.
    RIP - Ricky Wilson

    This song, and many other's by the B52s, aren't meant to be serious, except for quality of the musicianship behind the quirky lyrical/visual content.

    So whe. I was little Make a Wish sent my family to Hawaii for my brother, who wanted to see a volcano. (My brother lived longer than expected, by a fair amount, but died last year before he could turn 29.)
    So the plaine lost our luggage, than we got lost in the middle of nowhere. (GPS was not really easily available than, not like today) so I was little, it was dark I was freaking out. My dad had had a b-52s tape in his carryon. Now that was what we were listening to. So while mom and dad tried to figure out where we were and where to go, my brother noticed that this song calmed me down. So he got it to be replayed over and over, by my dad, so I would stay calm.
    Miss you everyday big brother. Love you always.
    5o note I was strange as a child. My brother later in life informed me I would cry when "Walking on Sunshine" played. But get very happy when I heard "Bad Moon Rising" Go figure.
