According to Song Facts website: This has been rumored to be about a drug deal, but in an interview with New Musical Express, Frank Black said the song was about hobos traveling by train and dying in a big earthquake in California. He started writing it when he was about 15 and was inspired by small earthquakes experienced growing up in California. For me it's about waiting for your special, romantic someone. A soulmate.
Well the lyrics definitely speak about the dirty beards of homeless people by the outdoor fires waiting for a box car and after the chorus "the man" has come and he is on the box car when it starts shaking and a big stone falls and hits him on the head and then "the man" of the second chorus is clearly death so for me i dont think its all that subtle or difficult to decipher but everyone of course is entitled to their own interpretations when it comes to art :) great piece of songwriting whichever way you look at it!
You can tell they don't want to film the video. Not even trying to mime etc when 90s bands thought it was uncool to make a video for MTV 😂. It's like watching a dog have a bath.

Please please please do some reaction videos to my favorite country singer Reba McEntire and please please do the one by her called Fancy you will not be disappointed one of the most amazing songs one of my all-time favorite and I'll give you a little bit of what it's about it's a story about her singing about how her mama had to basically turn her into they don't come out and say it but basically a prostitute because the mother could no longer afford to take care of her or the newborn baby and she was mad at her mom at first but it talks about how and she charmed the king of congressman and occasional aristocrat and she got her a Georgia mansion and she'll never be a old townhouse right and she ain't went back I mean there's more to the song but that's the gist of it and it is a amazing song especially when the first few verses talk about hell you know she lived in a pitiful shack and her mama put dabbed a little perfume and put a red dress on her and and gave her a look at that said to thine on it self be true as she quivered as a roach caught a cross the top of her high heel shoe and then another part says just being nice to the gentleman fancy they'll be nice to you

Allegedly the group didn't want to make videos but they needed some for the music channels at the time. That's why they didn't put much effort into the videos.
The reason this video is odd is that the singer , Black Francis , didn't like the idea of videos , and refused to lip sync , period. So this is the best they could get out of the band. The refusal to lip sync is the reason for him and the bassist opening their mouths in big Os.
