    Are there steam shows/gatherings that award prizes in England? If so, this marvelous steam plant should win a first place.

      Rain Coast I’m hoping to have this out and about next year for people to see. It is absolutely amazing and I couldn’t of wished for anything better. Keith’s work is an absolute joy to behold.

    You could do a 100 part series and I'd watch them all. There is something about machinery working well and this series personifies this.
    Excellent build and series ;)

    I'll miss seeing the steam plant in the workshop too. Was a great series and looking forward to the next.

    That really is a thing of beauty, mesmerizing to watch. Can't imagine getting the same feeling of awe watching an electric motor go round

      Not unless its an electric motor powering a compressor, compressing air for a steam engine!

    It shows that you love working on these and your craftsmanship shows.
    Thanks for sharing with us.

    Just beautiful. By taking the time to do each part correctly is the reason it runs so smooth. Without these videos, most of us would never get the chance to see how these engines function and all the work that goes into building and maintaining them. Bravo!

One day I would love to do the same. Thanks Keith it's been a real treat watching all the videos. Kind regards John

    Beautiful work Mr. Appleton, when I was a young man I used to work on a steam yacht in Washington state. It had an 85HP Sisson compound steam plant and Scotch boiler. Best training i ever had for a career in the Coast Guard.

    I see each and every piece that you've worked on. I roll my eyes at the thought of how much that plank of wood is now valued at (and of course the V.A.T.). I'll never be able to own a set-up like that but I am most grateful for you allowing me to watch it here. Thank you so very much and give my best to Charlotte.

BTW I'm a time served traditional machinist who agrees with just about everything you say! I've never heard you use the expression 'Armchair Engineers', but I bet that you have been tempted...

  • @tsteague5891
    @tsteague5891 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Mr. Appleton, do you have a video on timing the valves of a duplex pump? possibly like the pump in the video or a southworth 6/8 inch or a 4 inch?

  • @royseifert3078
    @royseifert3078 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another beautiful piece of workmanship. I know nothing about steam engines or plants, but instead of having valves all over the place, would it be possible to build a control panel of sorts so all the valves would be in one place?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it's called a Steam Turret - like in this video: th-cam.com/video/TbuPlILp_J4/w-d-xo.html

  • @kotori87
    @kotori87 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So what exactly is the point of the condenser? You're not reclaiming the condensed exhaust, it just gets dumped overboard. So what does it do for you?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it stops the oily exhaust from gurgling up the chimney and generally helps the engine to run more smoothly.

  • @mlong5878
    @mlong5878 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just found your u tube channel and really enjoyed this build, intending to do a stuart plant myself, can you tell was thestuart gas tank used in the end on this build, and if so was it big enough for the job, can't see it in the video did I misswhere you decided not to use it?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the owner decided to us a larger gas canister - the small tanks are a waste of time . . .

  • @Lawnmowerman02346
    @Lawnmowerman02346 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Can the waste water from the condenser be filtered and returned to the water supply tank ?

  • @karlhrdylicka
    @karlhrdylicka 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hooray , finally the completed build . very nice assembly Keith but I have a sneaking feeling you have an electric motor hidden away running it as it's much to quiet for steam.( just joe king )

      Not really, I don't have the necessary measuring equipment.

  • @BillySugger1965
    @BillySugger1965 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for a delightful series Keith. As a novice, I’m keen to test out the new things I’ve learned from you. Does my ear sense the Twin Victoria is slightly out of beat? And is that a knock once per rev, louder at higher speed?

  • @andytroo
    @andytroo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    how much power would a little plant like this put out?

  • @robprupe
    @robprupe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just as a guess, what would you say the horse power is of this engine?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really have no idea, it is very dependent on the boiler pressure.

  • @gregmarchegiani6656
    @gregmarchegiani6656 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mr Keith, how can you know that the boiler is filled with "half a glass" of water? Have you measured the volume of the boiler counting glasses of water? Outstanding work, your videos are my medicine!

  • @PatFarrellKTM
    @PatFarrellKTM 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Really beautiful model. Three questions: (1) Did you get the £5 that I sent you? (2) if the condenser drain is open all the time, what keeps the steam from flowing out the drain? (3) I have no idea what prices are for models, I expect this one is pretty expensive since its so nice. Can you give a rough estimate? I'm thinking at least £1000, is this close?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, thanks Pat. Question #2: the end of the water drain pipe is submerged in the water and steam always takes the easy way out - up the chimney .... I can't really discuss prices on here - but you are getting nearer if you triple your estimate :-))))

    • @PatFarrellKTM
      @PatFarrellKTM 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      See, I know nothing about prices, I can easily see it being way higher than my uninformed guess. It is a beautiful piece of work. I love it.

  • @robertmatel8136
    @robertmatel8136 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi. Really like your videos; not only for the content but also for your humor and your voice. I could listen to you reading a dictionary.
    Please relate your reasoning for not wrapping the steam pipes just before the steam chests.
    On the video it looks like your finger is very close when you are adjusting the valve.
    Also, on the video it looks like there is a leak at the fitting on the steam chest.

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the "steam pipe" nearest the steam chest is actually the pipe union nipple. Yes, I fixed the leak. I don't video everything that I do ....

  • @sop2510
    @sop2510 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why is the steam supply line to the engine steam chests not lagged. Wouldn’t the reduced steam pressure after passing through the regulating valve drop its temperature and cause condensation?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It makes very little difference in a small model and the pipes are easier to clean without lagging. I only lag steam piping that is close to the operator to avoid burns to the hands.
