Compared the the change in the Hush movie, the change for the Long Halloween actually works. In Hush, by changing the identity of Hush to the Riddler, the intrigue given to Thomas Elliot was lost, while in the Long Halloween, changing Gilda's motivations gives more to her character compared just a woman who wanted to spend more time with a husband and start a family.

    • @joshuahermanson341
      @joshuahermanson341 2 ปีที่แล้ว +83

Indeed it does. I remember when this was announced, and after having seen the Hush adaptation I was worried because I hated it. I wondered if they were gonna even keep it as Gilda or not. In fact I was thinking they were gonna change it to Sofia Falcone. Killing her way to the top to prove her worth as a woman in the mafia, or something along those lines. But the way they went was infinitely better and even more human in its own way.

Except it doesn’t do that at all. At least Hush left Elliot with a friend-Bruce-never-made-enough-time-for-before-he-was-lost dynamic. All this does is gut out the mutual love Harvey and Gilda had for each other, which had motivated their shared actions as the Holiday Killer, and replace it with one-sided revenge where Gilda just used Harvey to secure her own ends.
It’s more obnoxiously foreshadowed ahead of time and makes for a much more one-note story. In the comic, Gilda and Harvey wanted to make a safer city for each other, but ultimately made Gotham worse by facilitating the transfer of crime from mobsters to themed supervillains. Here, that stuff is swept away in favor of a dull revenge subplot and some vague message of hope, and completely demeans the relationship Harvey and Gilda were supposed to have. And this is _after_ they spent so much time cutting out their happy moments together and leaving nothing but their bickering. This isn’t depth. This is just making it monotonous dour-for-the-sake-of-dour sludge.

What made this mystery work so brilliantly is that when you saw holiday and looked at the killer's eyes, you couldn't tell if it was male or female at times. That subtle trick made you wonder how much of this was done by Harvey and how much was done by Gilda. There were two holiday killers. I also like how they elevated her character to being a fully licensed attorney as opposed to just a wife that wanted to make her husband's life more easier with more time for starting a family. That made Gilda more of a force to be reckoned with and more of a competent mastermind. Someone who knew what she was doing.

@@FeedingFrenzy91 Harvey wasn't really "with Gordon", if you look at the Christmas scene again, both Gilda (first) and Harvey (seconds later) leave at the same time. To further add to Harvey killing Alberto, he has an argument with Gilda before it and she asks him "why can't you be more like him?", implying Alberto, which gets Dent mad.
And finally, a close up of Holiday's face in a mask is shown after Alberto's death and it's clearly a man.
My guess would be that Gilda started the killings (since they only included Falcone's men), then Harvey mimicked Holiday when he decided to kill Alberto. Then they both continued to kill, since from that point on not only Falcone's men were killed, but Maroni's as well, and Gilda had no reason to kill Maroni's father, which was definitely done by Dent as Holiday.
Then, obviously, Gilda's last killing as Holiday is Maroni, as a revenge for disfiguring her husband. Falcone is then taken care of by Two-Face and her revenge is complete

I figured Gilda was the cause of the killings with how much they were focusing on her and how she was the personification of depression, but I'm not a fan of how Holiday on screen looked completely different from her. They cheated a little there, making Holiday look more like a man like Harvey Dent. They should have completely shaded the face or make the image blurry around Holiday instead of straight up drawing completely different eyes.
I originally assumed she hired an assassin to do the killings, still technically making her the killer, but they didn't say that. And two...it wasn't up to Batman to decide whether she deserved to be punished or not. That decision rests with Harvey and Batman didn't want to make a choice without his input.

I can. Because the way she implies things, Falcone had her injured in a way that made sure she could never have children, with his son, or anyone else. Which in itself is a murder. He did something so irrefutably evil, that even Batman couldn't bring himself to bring her to justice; it had already been done, as long as she admitted she didn't plan on hurting anyone else.
This movie made me REALLY hate Falcone; he made himself part of a decision that wasn't his to make, he impeded on the life of a child that was away from his life, and ironically made his son a coward, his greatest fear. Notice he constantly talks about Alberto's weakness; a mirroring of his own moral failings. He could have just accepted his grandkid and be happy but no, can't have that. I think that is the real reason his wife left him; she knew what he had done and is absolutely disgusted by it.

But in the comic the killer was less obviously her, there were three suspects and the only thing linking her was the fact that she admitted it and that she was burning evidence because at most she could've only logically done like 3 of them. Most of the clues suggested Harvey or August if not both, but in this they have a whole montage telling you, yah it's her.

Look, I can’t begin to imagine the pain and horrific tragedy she went through after what the Falcones did to her. They deserved what they got, but she ended up using Harvey, put a target on his back, and allowed him to be framed as Holiday which resulted in Maroni attacking him because she killed Maroni’s father. Which doesn’t even make sense cause her beef is with the Falcones, but anyway her actions not only indirectly led to Harvey’s face being half melted but also his psyche literally being split in two. She talks about how Harvey left her to deal with her own demons but she pretty much caused his own demon to completely take over leaving Two-Face in his place. Now, she gets to walk away while Harvey has to live as a schizophrenic Batman villain for the rest of his life. I just feel like in that regard she got off too easy even if she feels bad for what happened to him.

What Gilda is keeping from Harvey is that the abortion basically wrecked her body and made impossible any future pregnancy. All Gilda ever wanted was to be a mother and that potential was forever ripped away from her because of Carmine Falcone and that’s why she goes on a vengeance streak against the Falcone family. The American Mafia, commonly referred to in North America as the Italian-American Mafia, the Mafia, or the Mob, is a highly organized Italian-American criminal society and organized crime group.
The organization is often referred to by its members as Cosa Nostra ("our thing" or “this thing of ours”) and by the American government as La Cosa Nostra (LCN).
The organization's name is derived from the original Mafia or Cosa nostra, the Sicilian Mafia, with "American Mafia" originally referring simply to Mafia (or Cosa nostra) groups from Sicily operating in the United States, as the organization initially emerged as an American offshoot of the Sicilian Mafia (known also as Cosa nostra by its members) formed by Italian immigrants to the United States.
However, the organization gradually evolved into a separate entity, partially independent of the original Mafia in Sicily, and it eventually encompassed or absorbed other Italian immigrant and Italian-American gangsters, and Italian-American crime groups (such as the American Camorra) active in the United States and Canada that were not of Sicilian origin.
In North America, it is often colloquially referred to as the Italian Mafia or Italian Mob, though these terms may also apply to the separate, yet related, Sicilian Mafia, or other organized crime groups in Italy, or ethnic Italian crime groups in other countries.

I have two theories as to possibly answer your question.
      (1) It is likely that Falcone would have found a way to escape justice. He is the most powerful crime lord in the city (The Godfather of Gotham) and would have likely found a way to escape justice and walk away free either by threats or bribes. It's also possible that Johnny (her nephew) would have had a hit put on his head and killed before having the chance to testify. Even though Falcone cares about family, I would not put it passed him to kill someone who threatened his whole operation; he did kill his own premature grandchild simply because it would have been born out of wedlock.
      (2) Gilda's thirst for vengeance was so great that she wanted Falcone dead and not just rotting in a cell. Her hatred is understandable considering what Falcone did to her and something so horrible would be extremely difficult to move past. Some people are just so govern by their hatred that they allow their bitterness to consume them and blindly govern their actions. They are not as strong as Batman who was able to overcome his personal demons and keep his darkness at bay. Similar situation happened in Batman Mask of the Phantasm.
Again these are just theories but I hope this answers your question.

Bruce is honoring the last bit of Harvey that remains which is the love for his wife even when Harvey figured it out he still took the blame for her caused he loved her.

While Batman doesn't agree with the methods of people like Gilda (murder) he agrees her victims deserved it. Justice isn't always legal. It can be argued that the very foundations of the law and the judicial system help criminals get away with murder and then some while innocent people suffer and is denied justice. While the law and judicial system is necessary to keep order it's not without its flaws, contradictions, and shortcomings. There are times when the law fails to bring about justice and people take the law into their own hands and seek retribution and they call that justice. And ironically enough the law and judicial system punish those people when they failed those people in the first place. Besides Batman understands that Gilda will never find peace she will always suffer regardless of where she is in prison or in the cold confines of her home. And Batman understands that Harvey took the fall for Gilda and he isn't gonna go against Harvey's sacrifice by bringing in Gilda. He feels guilty that he wasn't able to save his friend.

These versions of superheroes are just hard to stomach. We get it, the flaws they already had just keep getting rehashed but adding more flaws makes us scratch our heads and wonder who are these posers? The 2022 film, The Batman is another example as Batman continues to fail at solving The Riddler's clues until its too late. We get it again, it would be a boring set of movies to watch bruce train up to become Batman but seeing this armature version is just wasting money.

    • @seenyab4494

Not at all. Their failures are what makes them compelling and interesting. In The Batman the whole theme is how Bruce fights crime using fear, except he doesn't actually change anything. He states in the opening monologue that he knows this but he keeps fighting anyways to make himself feel better. Two whole years as the Batman and crime was at the same rate and his influence gave rise to a homicidal maniac that damn near destroyed the city. At the end Batman realizes that he can be more than fear when he saves the crowd of people at the end. He realizes he can be a symbol of hope to the people and maybe then things will change. This is why Riddler is so upset at the end, he wanted attention and tried to claim it by flooding the city. But Batman was the only thing talked about in the news because he heroically saved the mayor and many innocents. In the end, he beat the riddler in his own way by denying him the attention that he so desperately craved.

Its like the idiot people messing around with Pepsi, you mess around with a good product that doesn't need improving and you lose what you got. Of course it will appeal to some but the original earned its place in the market while other versions which are not improvements are just cashing in.
At the end of The Batman, its clear that they are attempting to make him more like Superman. A critical error in writing as Batman is about Vengeance which is why he is typically alone with Alfred keeping his sanity and humanity. Dick Greyson was basically the same person but from a different background which is why in comics he was argueably the best Robin and made the best successor to Bruce.

@@fstbr4 Batman has been shown to be a symbol of hope numerous times throughout his existence. His most famous storyline, The Dark Knight Returns, is all about that. He emboldened the people of Gotham to rise up and take back their city. Batman can still have the fear and vengeance, but you can't seriously expect the character to never grow or change. These latest Batman iterations HAVE been improvements. They take Batman back to his more vulnerable roots where he actually has to struggle instead of miraculously saving the day each and every time.

@@seenyab4494 Batman is a symbol of courage driven by vengeance and not a symbol of hope like Superman. Batman is not a symbol of hope as he is too busy doing the job that law enforcement cannot do with criminals that laugh and/or ignore the laws that govern society. Its was Superman that inspires Batman to hope for a better tomorrow which was the prominent and accepted storyline unless newer DC writers decided to mess around with it.
The latest iterations of Batman have been getting more flawed, vulnerable, and weaker. This latest version in The Batman is the youngest and most flawed of any making it hard to believe that he was not killed within 5 minutes of the movie. As for Dark Knight Rises, besides the stupid title the misguided theme, "Batman can be anyone" which is a ripped off theme from 'Zorro' is was lame. If that nonsense theme was true then Oliver Queen or Kal-El could have become Batman. Dick Grayson should have had no competition to succeed Bruce if that theme was true.

@@fstbr4 I didn't say "The Dark Knight Rises" I said "The Dark Knight Returns" The comic written by Frank Millar depicting an old Batman that is coming out of retirement after the death of jason Todd. In that story Batman turns a gang led by The Mutant into a force for good and has them help retake Gotham from Criminals. They also did an animated movie on that if you're interested, since you clearly aren't all that familiar with Batman and WHO he really is. Please stop projecting your image of Batman onto who Batman REALLY is. Again the new Batman is flawed and weaker but that makes their successes so much more enticing. I'd rather see Batman get his ass kicked and come back in the end than watch Batman nonchalantly take out a guy that can throw trucks with some bullshit, lazy writing that makes him somehow more powerful than a kryptonian. And if you think about it, anyone really could be your Batman, he is a regular human after all. It's easy to instill fear into everyone, but it is hard to help them see the light and goodness. I'm not saying that Batman is THE symbol of hope, but in the comics and most media he is A* symbol of hope, especially for Gotham. His Bat signal not only instills fear in the criminals but also tells the regular citizens that he is out there and that he will protect them the best he can.
