Decomposed granite with the stabilizer premixed doesn’t pack nearly as hard as adding stabilizer after you put down the dg. You will need to run a plate compactor over it after putting it down and then let it harden up.
Thanks for the info. I had DG put down with no stabilizer, but my dog is now starting to dig into it. Can I apply something on top of the DG to harden it while still allowing water to soak through it?
I have a small tiny home of the size of 8x16 on a four-axle trailer and looking for a base to pack down before I place the concrete blocks. Would unstablilized decomposed granite would work?
Can I use it directly on mud if there no grass growing? Basically, the edge of my yard is a mud pit because my dog runs the fence barking and people and then has super muddy paws. I’m trying to Lin my yard with something natural that won’t hurt him but that keeps the mud from being an issue. If this is a good option, when’s the best time to put it down? When the ground is damp?
What weed blocker did you use? We’re having issues with weeds and don’t want to use harmful chemicals or round up. The weeds are extremely short and small. Hard to even pull with fingers and we would be on our patio all day multiple times a year :/ recommendations for the weed blocker/ substance we could use to help that are safe and environmentally friendly? :)
Double layer of a good geotextile fabric. Don’t use the cheap plastic stuff. Small weeds are inevitable over time so just put on your headphones and get pickin!
We replaced an old uneven lawn that never did well with DG. But, I hate it. The top has loose rocks and they are constantly coming in the house. I did not realise that my kids would hate it also. They used to walk barefoot in the yard, and now will not go out there because the rocks are everywhere. Also, I was told that you can easily plug dymondia, or other plants in, but they do not do well in the DG. I think it would only work in very dry locations where you just want a basic walkway, otherwise, give me some pavers for a walkway, and some other ground cover. Now I am trying everything to replace it. But, low water groundcover is not working.
Hi there, We have done similar pathway. Breeze and concrete pavers on 1 feet distance with 4” metal edge on both sides. My landscaper has not stabilized it. It looks loose. Do I need to use liquid pathway stabilizer? Thanks
How thin a layer of decomposed granite over soil with lots of clay mixed in, SoCAL ( Long Beach)? I’d rather not put down more than necessary for the back yard.
if you were to put it around your house to keep dirt from blowing inside your home how many inches deep should it be and in what increments? Also would you recommend the stabilizer and where would you get it,lowes, home depot?
I’ve seen decomposed granite in neighborhood where plants were planted in the decomposed granite that now need to be removed. My question is, after removing plant can the hole in the decomposed granite be repaired?
This is what I was wondering too. I've seen potted plants sat on top of the DG. I don't know what to do at this point though. Claw and Hammer what do you recommend?
@Claw And Hammer I'm doing something similar now with the concrete pavers and DG borders. What did you use specifically for weed blocker and how did you apply it (since it sounded like the pavers were already installed when you switched to DG)? Thanks for sharing. Good stuff.
Great ideas! Have an area under a couple of apple trees that currently have flagstone pavers and have tried to grow several ground covers between them with no luck and the weeds are awful. Would you put DG between flagstone? If so, how would you compress DG without breaking stone? How deep should the decomposed granite be? FYI I'm located in So. Cal.
A landscaper made DC pathway bout 5 years ago with stabilizer, but now one area where there is a lot of foot traffic is loose. How do you recommend I reapply stabilizer and which product do you recommend. Thank you
I was just wondering what DG was and happened upon your channel. Not sure if it would be suitable in NW Georgia. We have high humidity and pop up storms 3 or 5 times a week. But I might by a little bit and try it out. Great job on the video. I feel like I learned everything I need to know to start me a walk way. Oh and I always like and sub everybody. I put a little on my channel from time to time. So far I've just been learning to use the recording parts.
I was thinking of using mountain rock and something more natural looking than mortar for a filler. I have plenty of flat rock I can use. As far as weeds go I just pull them like you said. I just mainly need to raise me a walk way to me and the wife's vehicles. When it comes a heavy rain, The yard gets about ankle deep in water.
Living in SoCal, and having just had a drought tolerant landscape plan approved by the SoCal water district, I am looking for a landscaper that can follow my plan in making a dry stream bed and landscape. Do you do work commercially, or can you recommend a landscaper that has a good eye towards how a natural stream bed should look like? Thanks for the clip. Good info.
I just had DG installed in my backyard pathways so that my daughter could drive her powered wheelchair on it. The problem is that her tires dig in when she turns. How can I fix that? I thought that it would hold her strong after they compacted it. Her wheelchair total weight is 435 lbs.
You have to be careful with it around cars as if it blows up onto the windshield and you use your wipers, it will trash your windshield. It also sticks to shoes and if you walk inside a house with wood floors, those floors will easily get trashed too. Something called the Mohs Scale that explains how abrasive it is. They will sometimes refer to it as quartz because it is the same as granite. The dust from it is very toxic silica and causes silicosis disease, so don't create any dust from it.
We just installed DG in our backyard and I worry we did something wrong. The top layer of it is loose. We DID rent a compacter and ran it over the DG many times. It seemed solid at first but, after walkin on it a bit the top layer has really loosened up and it's no longer hard under foot. We installed it with a 2 inch road base (compacted) and then 2 inch DG compacted.
@@clawandhammer4635 I'm not sure. We didn't add anything to the DG, so unless it came with it, then it doesn't have it. Would there be any way for me to tell if it's in there?

Can you mix Portland cement to Mimic concrete that doesn’t erode?
Ohhh this stuff. It’s often known as “ toppings” in Australia. I guess it’s pretty popular here for landscaping and bush tracks.
Thanks for sharing, about to embark on this project this weekend!
thank you for sharing this knowledge. i liked seeing it in different areas

If it does rain, will the granite track when you travel to other parts of the home?
It can also scratch the floor surface. Make sure you don't bring the same shoes inside the house 🙃
Great video, thanks!
Good luck on sand papering your hardwood floors (LVPs and laminate floors).

Hi. I just ran across this video. Is DG suitable to use in KY where we have rain and snow?
How did you do those stairs... Like the material vertically.
Does the treated dg need to be pre moist end

What color is your dg?
What happens with roundup? Guessing something not good
Major health concerns
Were there any situations in the vid where you did not have to use stabilizers?
Anywhere there will be no foot traffic is fine. Just remember it can blow around and into your home. Wood floors hate DG.

You can add stabilizer to the dg.
How many inches should you put down say around a fire pit?

no, but you should be putting it on a compact surface.
The weeds dont grow up through the weed barrier. It only grows and roots within the DG itself. Very easy to pull them out.

Once it has had some time to really compact the rain won't affect it. Grass and weeds will grow up through it though.

Ive never heard of this, cement has large aggregate in it so it would change the texture.

Dymondia, not Dymoondia. Dymondia needs a lot of water to establish in the first year.

Cement is the binding ingredient in concrete. Those are concrete pavers not cement pavers.... Just saying
Concrete, not "cement". Sand+cement+gravel+water=concrete

You need concrete or a paver patio. Or, not enough hardener was added to the DG.

We do!

can you give an idea how it cost?
Arcenio Chavez right around $50 a yard
